I have been around automotive repair my entire life. I'm a licensed mechanic with a lot of time. I had a job that allowed me to go to a lot of different shops throughout Canada. I've met and watched countless people manipulating metal. Never in my travels have I met anyone that even comes close to Karl. He truly is an absolute master at his trade. Reading through the comments, you never read anything negative about this man. I really hope you read some of these comments Karl. Everyone is astonished with your workmanship and your personality. Keep at it brother. You can only get better. Canada is very proud of you young man.

One of the best things about these videos from Karl is that he doesn't just explain what to do, but why it's done that way AND what happens to the metal. Anyone can be a panel beater but it takes real skill to know why you're doing things a certain way. I've learned more from these videos than from anywhere else. I still wouldn't say I'm a pro but at least I know WHY my panels sometimes look like an elephant has trod on them!!!!

Amazing Herculean amount of work and talent/skill to fabricate that fender patch...not a patch but a complete rebuild of the most complex part of the fender! Great walkthru of your process! Amazing to think that many years from now someone will strip the paint of that fender and discover your talented metal work underneath! Wowsers! Go Japhands, keep moving forward!

Working small pieces into place is by far the easiest way to make complex repairs. I did the front corners on both doors one piece at a time. Getting each piece to fit exactly, then moving on to the next piece, grinding and shaping as you go. I enjoy watching someone made repairs that fit perfectly. Karl, you're the man!

They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but at the age of 61 I can say you can. Watching your metal working video's has made working on my 67 Spitfire project seem way more doable. I started working on it back in 98 and had replaced floor pans and fixed a lot of rust over the years. Not actually having a shop to work in for most of those years made it very hard to take the time needed to first learn the skills I needed, and to gather good basic tools. Now I have the shop I have a bit more time and thanks to yours and a few others on TH-cam I'm learning the skills. Now I just have to rip out a bunch of the bad work I did over the years and make it right. Thanks for the teaching
    Cheers R...

A fascinating video. Way back in 1980 I had to do exactly this job to a 1959 Classic Capri I was restoring. I learnt a lot of sheet metal work during my apprenticeship so I went full on for an all metal restoration of the car. It took me 18 months of evenings and weekends to get it done. Every time I thought I was winning I would find more rust and bondo hiding a multitude of sins.

One of the things I've loved watching this is the extreme attention to detail and thorough explanation of the tiny pieces and why piecing together has worked so well in the final shape and fitment of the whole fender relative to the bucket. I've never seen so complete restructuring of an original fender. This has been a masterclass lesson for replacing gone metal with the necessary structure for a perfect match once done by drop-hammer manufacture done in mass production. It's been a pure joy to watch to fruition.

does cooling it so fast with the compressor, quench it a little bit making it less ductile than the surrounding metal? before hammering it might be worth re-heating the whole peice with a torch tempering it a bit? I guess, in most cases its not worth it. but something to think about?

Looks good Karl!!! Plenty of great tips!! I do have a question, and maybe there is not a great answer. So far as the hardness of the MIG weld vs the TIG weld I did a little internet search (and I do mean little) to satisfy the amateur blacksmith/bladesmith part of me that is fascinated by metallurgy and did not really find anything. I'm not trying to dispute the statement either just scientifically further my knowledge. Assuming ER70S-6 wire is used in both processes (granted both processes are different and ER70S-6 wire is 0.06-0.15 percent carbon and will harden) the only part of the process that should harden the weld is the blast of air. Because to harden most steel alloys (except air hardening varieties) the steel will need to be quenched (the quick blast of air may be enough). Just my thoughts, as I said I'm not disputing anyone, just curious. See you next time.
