He’s just saying it’s almost funny how specialized this skill set is, which I can see how one would think that if they aren’t in the tradeworld. It does seem absurd to somehow become thing guy, welding scuba diver
Believe it or not, about five years ago i was working a very similar job as in the video. It was a part time job with a scuba team in Santa Monica, CA. We basically go under, and have a boat help drop steel piping to the ocean floor that was used for plumbing, then they would have the underwater welders come in and weld the 16ft pipes together. I'll never forget what happened the day as I went below at 160ft to remind one of the welders to check the levels on his oxygen tank... I saw a shark around 6ft long right next to the guy! Right beside him! I was terrified for a minute. It appeared that he wasnt hurt so I got a little closer only to notice that the shark was actually helping him weld! I could not believe my eyes. I am an inland commercial diver specialized in underwater bridge and waterfront inspections. I really enjoy being a commercial diver though.
I'm not trying to say it's the highest payed job in the world 😂 but i would think it's pretty obvious for something as important and extensive in training as commercial diving and welding is it can't really be compared to dropping out of highschool
For those wanting to know. He would use normal electrodes specific to the metal that he's welding. And then you would paint it in water resistant paint. there is special underwater welding electrodes but they just include boron so that the weld doesn't cool as fast causing the steel to harden nothing to do with the water surrounding it. that's what the paint is for

You have to run the welder opposite from topside so the positive is ground. That way the flow of current is moving away from you. Also you need to be wearing rubber gloves to help insulate your hands. Clamping the ground as close to the welding location as possible is also important.
@@Freehotdawgs ive been going to school for shielded metal arc welding and from what i understand, the air gap between the electrode and your work creats the high resistance needed to generate heat of 6°K-10°K F for welding. So if you are welding in water which has low resistance especially in salt water, how does that work??? Its probably not something you have to know but an explanation would be interesting
@@Freehotdawgs but air is an insulator where as water is a conductor. I believe the question is (even if I'm wrong it's my question also) how does the ground clamp and electrode holder not IMMEDIATELY make the short. Why I does it not conduct a current until the rod is in contact with the work piece?
John Pike because the path of least resistance is from the electrode through the tiny bit of water to the base metal and then to the grounding clamp compared to going through a shit ton of water the electricity chooses the path of least resistance going through the metal
Actually underwater welding is about as low risks as welding on land as far as electrocution goes. Electric shock from underwater welding is very rare. The key is to use DC only current.
