    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shockadellick Thanks! A good jig is probably the easiest way to build a bicycle frame, but yes, you can build a frame without one. When I was researching different type jigs and such, I came across a video from welding tips and tricks: th-cam.com/video/yT108iL-vMw/w-d-xo.html
      I thought it looked like it made sense and would be a good way to fabricate other things as well, so I built my own table and have built a couple frames on it so far.

      As someone who's welded a lot of thin stainless tube I'd recommend you get the biggest gas lens you can, and back purge the frame to stop oxidisation on the inside. Stainless should be silver or straw colour when you weld it.

      I went to a vo-tech school to learn how to weld and I've been a bike mechanic for 38 years, so between those two, I started with some basic stuff like welding new dropouts on bikes and just worked my way up to a complete frame. You can learn a lot from watching TH-cam videos. Pithy Bikes channel has a ton of beginner info, but the learning curve can be shortened drastically by learning to weld or braze at a vo-tech or an actual frame building school.

      @JoeyMesa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool. Glad you got it figured out. When I came up with the dimensions for this frame, I didn't copy anything straight from any other frame, but more or less the stack and reach from other frames that I felt "fit" my body really well, then added my ideal HT and ST angles. Nothing ground breaking, just what I felt would fit me the best. The actual tube lengths and angle cuts were just a result of what fit and how I wanted the bike to look. I think I'll do a video on effective ways to come up with frame designs that are functional fit wise, while getting the look you want, so thanks for the inspiration and your feedback!

      +Joey Mesa did you do any kind of analysis and testing for building this bike ? can you tell me how much it costed to build the frame ?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess as far as knowledge on frame building and such before I built this frame, I've worked in the bike industry for over 30 years, and seen firsthand what kinds of things can lead to frame failure, as well as where frames typically fail. I've been welding, mainly as a hobby, for 15 or so years and I always wanted to attempt to build a frame. I did a couple of modifications to some old steel frames (dropouts etc.), so I thought it was time to give it a go.
      As far as testing, it's still a test in progress! I'll probably build another or two for some friends to test soon as well. I got the tube set from Nova: www.cycle-frames.com/bicycle-frame-tubing/home.php
      I think the complete tube set with BB and dropouts was around $120 Most everything I used was pretty low budget. Probably the biggest investment for me was the tig welder. You could probably build one a lot less expensive by using lugs or fillet brazing with an oxy-acetylene set up, but I grew up in the old school BMX era and I really just like the look of a nice tig welded bike.

      @JoeyMesa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm actually a bicycle mechanic by trade, but I like to tinker with stuff.I think about the only nice piece of equipment I started with was my tig welder, but it allowed me to build a nice welding table, band saw stand, modify a cheap Harbor Freight tube notcher to fit in my drill press Etc.
      The bummer is that all my equipment and most of my tools are in storage back in Oklahoma. We moved to Colorado about 6 months ago, so I'm currently in an apartment. The plan is to be in place with some shop space in the near future. Hopefully in a couple years or so I'll have a little mill and lathe, then I can really start machining some stuff!

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've used gas pipe for various projects, but it's really too thick for a bicycle frame. Sometimes any kind of tubing is great to practice on or do other projects with, but for bicycles, if you're going to take the time to design it and notch the tubes and such, thin wall chromoly tubing is not that difficult to acquire, is strong, light, and will ride SO MUCH BETTER.
      The first time I tried something close to building a frame, I basically cut up and old frame that was damaged, rebuilt it with a new head tube and drop outs, and it gave me the confidence to try my first full frame build. I have a video of that bike, but it's mostly pictures: th-cam.com/video/5MSxW16J60Y/w-d-xo.html

    The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.

    Hey Joey. I suppose the tubes (including headtube) are all the same diameter such that did not have to make wood blocks in different sizes? Or did you account for that I the design of the blocks

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! The head tube (36mm), down tube (35mm), top tube (31.8), and the seat tube (28.6mm) are 4 different diameters. So, the wood blocks are paired in different sizes. The bottom bracket shell was very square and was 69mm wide. If you divide that in half (34.5mm) that gives you the centerline off the top of the welding table to center all the tubes. I just clamped a piece of angle iron on the platform of my drill press to account for the center of the drill bit holder to the bottom of the wood. From there I just swapped a hole saw corresponding to each tube diameter and it automatically made the wooden block the correct height. With all the tubes cut and mitered, I didn't even use any blocks for the head tube. I just used a large piece of angle and pushed it against the top and down tubes. Those held it in the correct location to tack it together.

      Probably not. I've done it before, but it requires shortening the front end length by 3/8 to 1/2", plus the cost of cutting the old 1" head tube off, mitering and re-welding the 1 1/8" head tube on would exceed the cost of a new frame and fork. I've seen guys who have used an adapter headset cup that allows a 1 1/8" fork to fit into a smaller head tube for a 1" fork, but that's for older US made Schwinns and BMX bikes that have a 32mm inside diameter on the head tube.

    where did you learn that? i really wanna make my own frame n maybe i can sell it...

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I learned how to tig weld at a vo-tech school. I've worked in the bike industry for a really long time, plus have raced and ridden bikes for over 40 years and that's where I learned about what kind frame geometry feels good to me for what I wanted. The rest was just doing research, practicing and making it up as I went along.

    Where do you purchase tubing and components from?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I purchased the frame tubing from Nova Cycles. I believe it was one of their 29'er tube kits. www.cycle-frames.com
      I work at a bike shop, so I just order parts from one of our suppliers. Most of the parts on this bike are old parts I have left over from older bikes.

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the tubes are double butted at .9mm on the ends, and .6mm in the centers. I think the top of the seat tube is 1.2mm. I purchased the tube set from nova cycles. They've restructured their website, but still sell all kinds of bicycle frame tubes and accessories - cycle-frames.com

    Do you need mechanical engineering degree to make frames

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Hambini might disagree, but some general knowledge of bicycle geometry, in the particular type of frame you're interested in building, in combination with some experience with metal fabrication would be extremely beneficial.
      The desire to learn and the willingness to practice is all you need.
      Thanks for the question!

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I want to build a bike frame from scrap metal but i have only another type of chromoly 4013 i think.Can i use that.

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much anything you can get your hands on is good to practice with. I used to cut up old frames that were destroyed and weld the pieces into T-joints, or weird angled joints to practice that type of junction that you do when building a bike frame. Welding thin wall chromoly takes a lot of practice. The first rideable bike frame I cobbled together was an old 60cm frame that had been wrecked and the head tube was bent inwards. I basically cut the damaged parts off, welded a 1 1/8" chromoly head tube and dropouts on it and made it into a 56cm track bike. Not sure what kind of tubing the frame was made of, but it was heavier than chromoly, and pretty easy to weld. I still ride it on occasion.
      Once you have the ability, and are ready to build a light, strong steel frame, chromoly is the only way to go, plus the tube kits are not that expensive.

      Steel doesn't really bend that easily, plus it's easy to bend back if it does. If it gets damaged beyond repair, I can detach it with my band saw and weld a new one back on.
