The fabrication is so high quality. I used to work for an aerospace company that built hydraulic components for fixed wing and rotary aircraft using CNC machining. Your work is on a par with theirs and they used massive CNC machines. Great bit of fun but I think you could have offset the weight by making it an e-bike. As you had to have a power supply for the pump you could have used the same source to drive the bike motor. Great looking project.
I can see this ACTUALLY being useful for a custom bike maker. a customer could come in & ride this, dial it into their exact preference and then the maker can measure & make exactly what they wanted.
No way you could set the hydraulics to precise measurements. A similar design using All-Thread, or Heim'd tubing sections that can adjust would be far simpler, lighter, and cheaper to make as a frame sizing tool.

Furze the best part of this entire video was the build montage with the music, so awesome! I think you should make a multi musical instrument sometime in the future that plays multiple instruments by one person, like an entire horn or string section.
There's actually a legitimate real world use for this thing, sizing someone up for a bicycle i.e. determining the bicycle fit for best different riders (since everyone's bodies have unique shapes and lengths).
Does anybody make custom sized bikes, though? Otherwise it'd be easier to just go over a few standard sizes, there aren't that many as far as I'm aware
I was actually thinking the same thing - it's basically a shop fit bike that you could actually (kind of) ride. There are plenty of places that will do a full workup on a fit bike, and then use a database to find you the closest commercial frame and size to what is your ideal geometry. Something like this could be ridden to confirm that the ergos are right before you sign on the line.... if it wasn't 116 lbs and floppier than a drunk daschund.

Actual serious use: test how energy expenditure and efficiency varies by riding pose. Give test subjects a co2 monitoring face mask and instrument the bike for measuring resistance and speed

@@andreashabeck1155 yeah but only really due to modern materials such as CF, extra suspension components, and electrification, and the only bikes with massively out of the norm geometry are high-end ones (competitive road/Velo and Downhill), and even then take a protractor to a £15 Peugeot of the 90s and a flash new £5499 Scott ADDICT 10 none of the angles are more than a few degrees out

I like it that a bendy bicycle is the only thing that colin has said he doesnt feels safe doing tricks on. 90mph go carts without a helmet, homemade hoverbikes and wearable flamethrowers are all fine though

there is me spending 3 hours on a cross threaded bolt the other day and felt like "level passed" when i sorted it, colin builds a bike from scratch with the ease we would make a sarnie.
You need some electronics on that thing to control the valves. That way you could have different shape "presets" and a way to safeguard against unsafe or unusable configurations.
For Colin's next challenge - he shall create a bicycle that follows you around and repeatedly rams into you until it has decided you've gotten your daily exercise, either by riding it or by running AWAY from it.
You just gave me an idea to utilize those creepy robo-dogs DARPA makes. We'll call it free excercise and let government run it and make it mandatory. Every tuesday and thursday a robo-dog hunts you for an hour. If it catches you it humps you for the remainder of the hour. Also we'll give it distributed AI so if you try any clever stuff it'll learn and tell the other robo-dogs
