    If you could build your own bike, what would it be? Let us know in the comments 👇
    Parts two and three are following very shortly, please be patient as this is a thing of beauty and well worth the wait.
    GCN's resident tech man is Ex-Professional Cyclist Simon Richardson takes a trip to The Bicycle Academy (gcn.eu/TBA) to see what is required to build his own bike frame.
    It's not as simple as just welding, or brazing, some tubes together. There are geometries to consider to ensure that the handling is spot on as Simon is going for a full custom frame.
    There is also the selection of which tubeset. Simon is buidling his frame from the renowned Italian tubing manufacturer Columbus, who have had their tubing ridden to glory by cycling greats such as Eddy Merckx, Greg LeMond, Fausto Coppi and many more. It is possible to simply select a full model of tubeset, but here is the fun in that? There's hundreds of different possibilities and it is also possible to combine different types of tubing together. Ideal if you have specific needs.
    A huge thanks to everyone at The Bicycle Academy for their time, take a look at their website here to see what they offer: gcn.eu/TBA

      I'd build myself a comfy retro-looking touring bike for sure, and I know it's not GMBN but I'd also very much like a steel hardtail trail bike.

      Yeah, and the UK is only 2 hours away with plane. The problem isnt with learning this, its more about the availability of the tubes. I can weld, program a CNC etc. so its not about doing it, its more the parts and the tech which is only useful for frame building :D

    Can we look forward to seeing Si ride around on his hand built bike in future videos (maybe not always but occasionally) or is it going to continue to be bikes from a major manufacturer? It'd be a shame for him to put in his love and work and not get to show it off to all us internet people.

    that was a nice introduction ! For those interested in the subject, there’s a great channel called Pithy Bikes where a guy build his own TIG-welded frame. It goes a lot more in detail in the process, and a lot of it involves jigs of all kinds to properly set up a working environment. The guy is a beginner and does not hide his mistakes at all, which makes it all the more great because sometimes things aren’t as easy as they seem :) But it’s still nice to see GCN just scratching the surface on this very interesting topic :)

    • @britinbrazil7912
      @britinbrazil7912 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Scratching the surface gets the interest going, then Pithy Bikes will be getting a lot more visits from those wanting to know more. Great way to spread knowledge and who knows maybe someone else will build their own bike :)

    Looking at the costs to build seems a bit pricey. For the same amount of money Brits could fly to Vancouver, drive to UFV and take a 2 week course from Paul Brodie (legendary bike builder) do some evening biking on some legendary trails, get in a weekend ride at Whistler (or ski depending time of year). Guess that's the bonus of killer exchange rate lol

    Have you guys heard of the Human Powered Vehicle Challenge? It's put on every year by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as a student design competition. Teams from university's around the globe design, manufacture, test, and compete a vehicle which is judged on design, innovation, speed, and endurance. There tends to be some pretty unique designs. This year my school's team did a 3-wheeled (tadpole) prone vehicle. We had some drive train issues we are still working on fixing but it's still a pretty cool vehicle.
