Barenboim is the BEST interpreter of the Beethoven sonatas I've ever heard. Never less than excellent, often downright superb. I particularly love THIS sonata, and he plays it wonderfully well. My only wish would be for a slightly faster tempo in the second movement. As with the first movement of Opus 27, #2 (Moonlight), the persistent triplet figurations cry out for a steady, relentless pulsing sensation that requires thinking of each group of three as ONE beat not THREE. I don't think Beethoven wanted "Largo lugubrioso" when he called for Adagio con molto espressione.

I see your point, but in the end isn’t it about the pianist’s interpretation? 9/8 is the rhythm for an aria so perhaps Barenboim felt that each grouping of three should be treated individually as three rather than one.
"Barenboim is the BEST interpreter of the Beethoven sonatas I have ever heard." Barenboim is a fine pianist, but you need to hear a lot more pianists, particularly of older generations, e.g., Horowitz, Solomon Cutner (the best, but only imo) Schnabel, Michelangeli, to name just a few.

@@pengyigu7164 It's really not..the 1st is a beast to play clearly and at speed though. The scherzo is a tough nut too, but the rondo is serene and the difficulties are almost all just musical.
Amazing performance. I love the 2nd movement especially, cause it sounds like a lullaby, don't you agree?

This fugue theme reminds me of some other theme I've heard or even played somewhere. Ahhh!! It's one of B's own theme and variations. The ones with the WOo (or however these super early works are arranged by) opus numbers I think

이거 보이싱이라고 하나요? 이 템포로 멜로디 중심에 다이나믹이 저정도로 세세하고 명확하게 표현할수있다는게 진짜 이게 장인이구나 라고 느껴지는것같네요. 지금 이곡 하고있는데 기본기 다지기에도 좋고 음악성 키우기도 정말 도움이 많이되는것같네요 ㅋㅋ 근데 템포 120을 못넘기겠어요 ㅠㅠ

That second movement is one of the best slow things beethoven wrote. Barenboim does need to move it along a little more
