Steppenwolf is one of the most under rated rock bands of all time
ROCK HALL OF LAME NEEDS TO GET OFF ITS ASS AND RECOGNISE
#fact
Absolutely, they are. I was fortunate to see them live.
@@samsmith4216 I stopped thinking of the RNR HOF a long time ago. They're a joke.
@@samsmith4216 AMEN!!! Really unexcusable.
That’s a real old John Kay... the 1968 version with Kay in sunglasses and black leather is classic ...and BORN TO BE WILD
Jay Edwards that's what I said. That's when he is older
He sounds pretty darn good here though.
good guitar solo
Agreed....love John Kay, but 1968 version is way better
@@chelley855 This was with the newer version of Steppenwolf since Goldie passed away. This was when they were called John Kay's Steppenwolf in the 1980's.
They played at our county fair. Our Harley club was asked to be security. When they played “Born to be Wild” we all went a little crazy with excitement.
You got to play the original song from 1968, it has a totally different vibe.
I agree Jeffery Davis the original is a different vibe! Its the one i allways heard and remember... its one of a kind. Thanks for pointing that out!!!
Is it better than this version? If so, I'll try to find it.
@@jessiem276 in my opinion yes it is
@@lorynpacheco5352 I found one which was Live, in 68. They were totally stoned, especially a guy, with blonde hair, and...it looked like he was wearing a dress 😂 It sounds and looks like the "hippie" days. Yeah, it sounds totally different. I don't know what show they were on, but..the host was talking to the singer, and ..he said, they didn't want to play their music on the radio...said he didn't think "housewives" liked their music...haha
Completely different vibe..coming from a man who heard it when it came out (on his AM pocket radio on 77 WABC..New York City). I'll take the original vinyl version any day... I'm lucky enough to have been exposed to many genres of music in my youth. Not only have I "heard" every type of rock band...I like most ..I've been told I am a living, breathing juke box...it's true .. I just wish there was a "name that tune" show on TV...I can name most in 2 notes, some in 1 ... I'd be dirty rich ! ... LOL
Excellent choice!. Also love "Born To Be Wild".
RIP August 1, 2017, He was known as Goldy McJohn, a Canadian keyboard player best known as the original keyboardist for rock group Steppenwolf. Originally a classically trained pianist, he was a pioneer in the early use of the electronic organ (Hammond B3) in heavy metal.
Their LP that had this and Born to be Wild almost cost me a divorce.
That's Michael Wilk on this video not Goldie.
In his day, John Kay was the coolest frontman in rock music. Steppenwolf had so many great songs in the late 60's - early 70's. There is no one like them. Bluesy, political, and a sound all their own. Still one of m y favorite bands... Their music never gets old. Check out "Don't Step on the Grass, Sam" or "Hippo Stomp"for some social commentary that's still relevant today.
I saw Steppenwolf live in the 70s. One of the best bands I have ever seen in live concert. The music was so loud that it made you levitate right out of your seat! John Kay stage presence was very impressive. Still listen to them, still love the music in 2019!!
Most people dont recall that this was one of two Steppenwolf songs (along with Rock Me Baby) that appears in the 60's movie CANDY starring several famous people including Ringo Starr & Richard Burton. It was based on the first mainstream erotic/porn novel that made the rounds through the country ..I ran across a seriously dog-eared copy while in Jr High. The lyrics of both song reflect the movie/book contents.
***JOHN KAY still rockin at 74 years old*** .. this was a hit when i was in elementary school in 1967 .... This was the first 45 record I ever bought, still have it too! ... GOOD STUFF
I have been saying for years that nursing homes were going to have to replace square dancing every 3rd Sunday with Heavy Metal Sunday and roll the Marshalls out.
Yeah I was in elementary school too but i still remember this song. And still love it.
@@armadillotoe Can you see us in our old age going to a nursing home jammim" to classic rock, groups like Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, Boston, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Styx...etc....drag racing in the hallways in our wheelchairs, just having fun....then someone pulls out some joints! Now the fun will really begin lol!
They did the big hit "Born To Be Wild." It's believed that the term "heavy metal" comes from that song because of the lyrics "heavy metal thunder."
It IS the first time the term heavy Metal was used in music.
"heavy" was born long before this
This is true!!! 🐧🐧
that is how the phrase heavy metal got on our vocabularies
I listened & danced to this song with my aunt when I was little. I always thought then that I can't wait to go on my own Magic Carpet Ride! I did. It's called life and....Life is beautiful! 🦋🎶🥰
I want to thank you for doing what you do. I am fighting a serious illness and your videos help take my mind off it when I am feeling low, God bless you!
Yeah Susan !!! Great pick. I never heard the long version before. This group, pronounced step in wolf, was hitting the charts with this song. I'm in the 6th grade at the time. To this day I still listen to it. " well you don't know what we can see, " ... " tell your dreams to me, the fantasy will set you free."
Ok here is my Steppenwolf story.....back in the 70's a few friends had I had just finished surfing at Huntington Beach...we were driving home down Pacific Coast Highway when we saw the marquee on a place called The Golden Bear, right across the street from HB pier..it said, Steppenwolf Tonight....we pulled in and bought tickets....now this was nothing more than a glorified bar with seats around the stage like a strip bar....there was a sign on the seats that said reserved so we took the sign off and sat down...a dude came over and said :"Hey these seats are reserved" my friend said, "Yea we reserved them last week" the guy looked at us and walked away...Steppenwolf came out and played not 3 feet from us....John Kay even gave us a high five at the end of the show.
"The Golden Bear"! 💖
LOL - Saw Steppenwolf twice in concert (late 70s/early 80s). Loved this song...it always made me want to dance on tables whenever I heard it.
Go for it lol!!!!!
This music brings me back to my childhood. Or pre teen years. Great memories go with this kind of music
Had the LP when I was in high school. Drove my parents nuts with it playing sky high. That's when they invested in a pair of headphones for me.
How is your hearing today?
@@ussling Considering I will be 57 in June, my hearing is great! No problems with hearing at all. By the way, I now blast the music from computer through ear buds, turned all the way up! You just can't listen to rock with a turned down volume!
@@lauracosby7382 Well happy birthday a bit early. Me, 56 in June. Growing old is mandatory, but I refuse to grow up.
I remember 1983 driving down a road in Charleston SC one day, where I was stationed, blasting "Candy-O" by the Cars on the stereo. Yes, some rock is meant to be set at volume level 10.
I'm paying for that now, what with loud rock and two years on the flightline as an aircraft crew chief during my time there. Those jets can be loud.
Not too bad, though, just a very slight loss of some midrange hearing.
My computer with iTunes is in the shop, but I can plug my iPod or CDs into a tabletop stereo.
iPod and CDs. Am I dating myself?
@@ussling And a happy early birthday to you as well! I would think, it was the two years on the flightline that caused a problem with your hearing. Not at all aging yourself, just remember, age is just a number....and all the good wine is aged as well! At least that what I tell myself. ha!
@@lauracosby7382 true.
Rock me baby..rock me baby...awwwl night long ! The guitar cord is one that a lot of instructors like to teach their students to keep interest ..it's fun and kind of easy to learn.
Just gotta point out, John Kay (The lead singer) escaped from East Germany so he could rock!
That's crazy. I had no idea. Thanks for sharing that.
His experiences escapining the East was reflected in Steppenwolf's song RENEGADE
@Viking They escaped in a truck not a train, listen to "Renegade" and it says "well the truck came by and put us in the back" and Kay states it in interviews. And I never heard that his mother had to "put out" for it, they paid just like the rest of the people who escaped did, where did you hear that part of it?
There was no East or West Germany when he escaped. His family was fleeing the imminent Russian invasion near the end of WWII.
@@HawklordLI That's interesting...because back in the day he either spread that legend, or allowed it to be spread in his behalf. I remember that being a well known "fact" about him in the 1970's when I became old enough to know who he was.
Great song by Steppenwolf. That was a good live performance of that song. Saw these guys live they opened up for Grand Funk Railroad.
Broke my heart when Steppenwolf played their farewell gig this past fall. I have followed them since I was a kid, own all their releases, and am a huge fan. If you don't know the story of John Kay's life, it's incredible and worth seeking out to read. His autobiography is also called Magic Carpet Ride. Michael Wilk on keyboards, Danny Johnson on guitar, and Ron Hurst on drums in this video kept the Wolf legend alive for the past 30 years. The earlier lineups of the band were also killer and their recordings have stood the test of time oh so well. Original keyboardist Goldy McJohn (RIP) was also a powerhouse and a hard act to follow. Michael Wilk more than filled his shoes.
Similar band is Iron Butterfly, "Inna Gadda Da Vita" will blow you away, organ, guitar, and drum solos that set a trend for some later bands.
Yes, you should do In-a-gadda-da-vita. But you must do either the 17 minute album version or the 17 minute official video version. I haven’t found anything else that had the drum solo correct in it. As JR above said you get great organ, guitar, and drums in all of it.
@@garyr8739, check out my other Olias of Sunhillow channel (with the black cat), I have a slightly modified version from the Manhunter soundtrack! It is almost eight and a half minutes long! It is a great alternative version for not having time to listen to the original!
The line was supposed to be "in the garden of Eden" but he was drunk and that's what he said so they kept it.
I am so sorry, but, Iron Butter Fly is not similar!!
Not bad for a man that's legally blind and never driven a car.
I' m a Trucker, when I break free Hammer Down on the InterState this is the first song on my Highway mp3 folder.
I actually had no idea how good they were live. Wow. Excellent.
They were awesome live.
Listen to some of their live stuff from the late 60's and early 70's, that's when they were at their best. Even their stuff from Don Kirschner's rock concert from 1974 and 1975 kicks ass too as well as the early 80's incarnation of the band with the Palmer brothers!
I was learning how to play this song on the drums when i was 14 in the garage.Brings back memories.I'm 63 now.
I was disappointed this was a live song, but they impressed me. Proved me wrong. Very clean and very much the same quality as the album version. Could have some louder guitars but that's the only thing I can think of. Nice.
I just LOOOOOOOOOVE your channel! I love the way you listen and your reactions. I've been watching for 2 hours already......Love the fact that you're a Stevie Ray Vaughn fan, also. That guy was heaven-sent..........
With my little gang of misfit delinquent friends, at the river, just us, swimming dancing & having the best time of our lives..even then it was an "old tune" lol..great memories, thanks
The Hammond B3 (piped through Leslie speakers) was the official organ of rock & roll for a couple of decades - nothing else sounds like it.
I'm with you there... always loved the sound of a Hammond, whether stock or worked over like this one. When Suzuki bought the rights to the Hammond name, everyone thought the organ they would produce would be a joke, a Hammond organ in name only... they were WRONG. They had over a dozen Hammond organs shipped over, everything from bone stock to highly modified ones like you just heard. And, they flew musicians over to play them, too. Top name blues artists, gospel artists, and rock artists. There is literally no difference in the sounds of an original Hammond organ and Suzuki's Hammond. Amazing considering the Suzuki is all digital while the original Hammond wasn't actually an electronic organ at all... but rather a mechanical organ electronically amplified. It had a START switch you had to use to get the shaft containing all of the tone wheel generators to start spinning, and a run switch to keep it going. Even more amazing is ALL of the Hammond tones are in it... from bone stock all the way up to the full on modified rock jobs. And yet, the Suzuki one guy can carry. The Hammond B3 took four men and a small boy as the saying goes. If you want to hear a Suzuki Hammond really doing its stuff, check out "Robert Cray Cookin' in Mobile 2010" on TH-cam. The song at the 37 minute mark has an organ solo that does just that... it's cookin'. And, he steps it up from stock sound through two notches of the 'blues' modified sounds. Actually, if you like blues the whole concert is really good, but on that one, the organ really wails. When he kicks it up the last time you can really heard the difference... man that thing really rips it. Why I learned guitar instead of keyboards is beyond me. And now, with Arthritic pain in my index and middle fingers on my left hand... so much for playing the guitar :(
We have been trying to get Steppenwolf in RocknRoll Hall Of Fame They were on ballet one year got 100 k votes but didn’t make the cut I heard this on radio Steppenwolf 1st Album I think had Born To Be Wild on it but there is a song called Desperation that wound up being in a video game I heard
I've listened to this since 1968 when I was 8 years old. NEVER saw it played live before. THANK you , TH-cam and ModernRenaissanceMan.
Thanks MRM!! Happy you got / built a new computer!!!! Thats awesome!!! You the man! God bless you too!!!!!
Nice pick Susan! Haven't heard this in a long time!
My older brother listened to Steppenwolf and since we shared the same bedroom I listened to them as well. I was ten years old in '69 and thanks to my two older brothers I got to listen to and enjoy some great music. Magic Carpet Ride is one of those songs I heard so many times I got sick of hearing it. This live version was killer though. I really enjoyed it. Everything I ever read about John Kay said that he was against drug use/abuse and even kicked a couple of guys out of the band for using drugs. The Pusher is a song worth listening to.
My older brother listened to them too. Steppenwolf Live. I would hear thru the wall that separated our rooms. Still loud enough to hear everything. I stole the album when he joined the army....not sorry.
Awesome choice he's older here but he still got pipes. I recently found out he has always been legally blind. Also that beautiful woman in the 60's video is his wife. You learn something new everyday!
Saw Steppenwolf in 1970. Great time period for me and concerts
When my mom and dad went to their concert in the 80's. They told my grandma about the band and she said: "What? Step on your wolf?" (Acutal quote from her).
This song reminds me of my older brother working on is '67 red Mustang when I was but 6 or 7 years old....he played Steppenwolf's 8-track with MAGIC CARPET RIDE all the time while he was juicing up his mustang with all the things that made those muscle cars back then go faster. In short, the song reminds me of oily smells and Summertime as a kid.
BORN TO BE WILD. best song ever. written by jerry's brother dennis (mars bonfire) edmonton
I've admired John Kay since I first heard 'Snowblind friend' way back in 1972. Not many people know it but he's legally blind. Having only limited eyesight myself, I have the greatest respect for someone who can do as much as he did - not only his music, he was once active in politics as well.
of every rock song says it is rock ,this one says it the loudest ,the number one rock song of all the ages,
Steppenwolf has a huge collection of commercially successful music.
John Kay was a refugee from East Germany. Got out just before the Soviets closed things down.
John Kay`s Voice has aged gracefully. Sounds as good as when I heard it as a boy 51 years ago.
Ironically, I found his voice to be less gravelly here and smoother than back in the day. It was a good grit to his voice on the original, but here was good as well.
One of the best rock bands ever! Loved their music
Thanks for that song, brings me way back to when I was little. Happy thoughts. Bless you and your family Ty. You make us smile everyday.
In my opinion, the studio version of this song is among the greatest songs of all time...
Anther one I grew up with. One memory of this one is more recent though. I was on my way to the beach to spend a weekend with friends and went through the car was on my way down there and right as the "ride" inside the car wash started this song came on my radio. It was kind of cool, I'm already looking forward to spending time on the beach and my trip starts off with a multi-colored soap and light show through the car wash. (Yeah, I'm easily amused)
You made such a good point... who could make an organ sound that cool! There is such an absence of these types of instrumentals in today's music....
I remember my older sister having this album and turning up the old console stereo. Good times!
That was a good version, of their classic. I've heard they were great live.
Yes, they were!
When this song was a hit, I was A LITTLE GIRL and I recall singing it (with made up words I'm sure!), waaaaay back then. MS. SUSAN, thank you for bringing this to the table! Steppenwolf had another ummm, pretty big hit "Born To Be Wild"...yeah...I sang that as a mere infink too (once again, with made up words, I'm sure)! Okay Mr. Ty, I've perused your block and am a subscriber. May the Lord Our God Bless YOU and YOURS and those who are TRULY 'Good" to you...in Jesus' name, AMEN!
one of the great songs that were high on organ playing in them.
Crazy the talent coming out of Canada late 60s early 70s , Steppenwolf, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, The Guess Who, BTO, April Wine, The Stampeters, and more.
I don't care how old they are they still sound good!!!!!!!
Steppenwolf was the group when I was in high school in the late 60s early 70s.
"Magic carpet ride" and" Born to be wild "were two of my favorites.
As a young teen (in the 80s) I loved many of the bands that were from the same era, but, I was not a Steppenwolf fan. My cousins bought me a cassette tape of Steppenwolf's greatest hits. When I opened it, I was thinking "gee thanks.". But, as time went on I did end up listening to it more.
Steppenwolf is a Canadian-American rock band, prominent from 1968 to 1972. The group was formed in late 1967 in Los Angeles by lead singer John Kay, keyboardist Goldy McJohn, and drummer Jerry Edmonton
I love your reactions, sometimes you crack me up. Another great song from the 1900's.
@@Teresia12 from the 1900's was the best music ever imo and for younger people they tend to assume I'm talking 1900 to 1920 and I find it humorous. Sorry Teresia Diane ....
The organists name in this incarnation of Steppenwolf is Michael Wilk, & yes, he is very talented. However, I recommend you check out the studio & live versions from when the original organist was with the band. His name was Goldy McJohn. His talent is awesome.
They have always been an awesome band live. They made their mark live and just happened to be get a recording deal.
Standard of the Vietnam War. They officially retired the band October 24,2018. Steppenwolf is the German name for the wolf of the steppe. Specifically, John Kay got the band’s from Hermann Hesse’s novel “Der Steppenwolf “
John Kay was born in Nazi Germany as Joachim Fritz Krauledat. His father was killed on the Eastern Front before he was born. His mother fled west with him ahead of the Soviet advance, but the division of Germany placed them in Communist East Germany. His mother fled with him again to the British Zone of Germany. Later they emigrated to Canada. Fascinating life.
So nice to see someone create the same sound both in and OUT of the studio. True Musicians. :D
John Kay lead singer Steppenwolf
His name is goldy mcjohn, I do not know if he has any solos. I listen to that and it brings me back to a different time, puts a huge smile on my face
He had a couple of solos before he passed in 2017. One was rat in the city.
@@cindykaetzel6322 He had more than that, they are New Visions, Fugue in D, Goldy McJohn & Friendz, Rat City in Blue, Set the World on Fire and Osmosis. Goldy isn't in this incarnation of Steppenwolf, Michael Wilk has been the organist since the 80's.
@@alyssaartifex450 exactly... I had seen the list...I just forget all the different ones..getting older sucks at times, darn memory..lol

I need a magic carpet ride
One of my all-time favorite songs and young or old John still rocks it ! 😎 The song hits you hard from the start & doesn't let go ! !
Yes!!! Love Steppenwolf!
I took a helicopter tour in Maui in the late 80s and they took us low across the treetops and over ridges where we caught the updrafts. When they gave us the video of our tour this was playing in the background
Love that Hammond Organ .Nothing compares.Just has a tone and Ommph live nothing else.
One of the great driving songs. I would drive home on leave, windows down, this was one of the songs that would blast from the 4-track.
GBY too. Vivat Iesu.
I love the beat of this song and the song as a whole, but the rythem section really stands out
thank you for this....i love this song and i was kind of shocked you picked my favorite live performance of it! that was awesome! but if you want to hear an organ player you should listen to the Doors. Ray Manzarek...may he rest in peace....thats the organ player you want to listen to.....
Check out Steppenwolf on TH-cam "Born To Be Wild" a 1969 classic video with all the original band members, it also was a song from the classic movie, Easy Rider, which helped make the band a world wide success.
1973..took a hit of window pane. Stayed up all night listening to Steppenwolf. Memories.
John Kay named the band after a book that he liked. The story as to why his mother brought him to Canada is fairly interesting - let's just say that he was born during dangerous times. Kay speaks fluent German. Other than stories about magic carpets and the kaleidoscope feel to this song that reminds me of the Hilarious House of Frightenstein - though I don't think they actually covered that one.
They had Canadian content rules for radio back then so heard a lot of his songs.
You've got to do Steppenwolf's Snowblind Friend ...
Actually Gabriel Mekler suggested the name because he was reading the Herman Hesse novel at the time and the band thought "why not?"
and english is his second language. he learned it by listening to Hoyt Axton mostly. and country music from america
Oh yeah! Great jam!
I believe this was a song in the movie easy rider with dennis hopper. if not this one, it was born to be wild from steppinwolf.
The Steppenwolf songs used in "Easy Rider" were, in order of appearance, "The Pusher" and "Born to Be Wild". First 2 songs used in the film.
I seen them in 80's at a Bikers Bar in seeding part of town of Pittsburgh, Pa. One of favorite song is Pusher Man awesome song- lyrics will blow you away! Relevant even today
Everyone knew "The Pusher", but it received NO airplay because of the main lyrics including "G@d Damn, the Pusher". Two years later, they included it in the 'Easy Rider' soundtrack. Born to Be Wild was their Top 40 song, but real fans knew the whole album.
Give it another Listen and this time listen to the bass work on the bass guitar. The bass guitar on the first 2 albums in 1968 was light year's ahead of anything else from that era.
Rushton Moreve and he was great, I wish he had stayed in the band longer!!
Great Song and group. Actually had the chance to see them perform live twice. Once at a small outdoor venue in the mid 70's outside of New Kensington, PA. Then I saw them at Ft. Bragg, NC when I was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division in 1978. Great time both times. Born to Be Wild and the Pusher are two more favorites of mine by them.
one of my top fav song of all time ,to be honest ,in my book ,i think this is the number one rock song of all time,my first date ,this was played and i hit the floor and tore the floor up ,always rocked me to the core. how awesome was my teen years and this was always on my playlist.
Back in the 70's we would listen to this and we were a little high. Ok, we got stoned listening to this and other great stuff back then. THAT'S WHY WE CALL IT "CLASSIC ROCK".
Factoid: The Hit single; had a fade out, as so many songs [sadly] did, back then.
so, they had to invent an ending, for their live performances.
My dad saw them in the Atlanta Airport in the late 60's and he said he could smell them before he saw them. I don't think that was really true but that was my dad just being my dad.
To my dad everybody with long hair was a " God damn hippy"....
To my dad everybody with long hair was a " God damn hippy"....
He might have been referring to the smell of pot on them. The concert I went to in the 70s you could get a contact high very easily!
@@donnlowe9129 ... Ya, and back then the weed was kinda "skunky"! 😁
Great choice Susan!!!
Yes!! Grew up listening to this one!! :-)
I saw these guys 3 years ago in Santa Barbara....(Ojai). Omg. White beards but actually performed well....mix of old and young. Crazy....
A great keyboard always gets my attention. Brings me back to a road trip with my older brother. Riding on the back of his Electraglide , heading to the U.P. of Michigan. I must admit that the trip across the bridge freaked me out a little.
I've watched a lot of your videos, and I haven't been paying attention. I finally noticed that one of your basses is a Peavey Grind 5. I have two of their 6-string models. One of them is older and has the cutout on the lower horn, like yours. The other is a bit newer.
I just found this channel while drunk and I love it. Good music good reactions rock on
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, haven’t heard it in a long time.
One of my favorite bands.....I have seen them Live twice....And I was not disappointed!!!!
One of my favorite songs ever and I was born in 1996. Sometimes I wish I could have been alive in the 60s and 70s to really experience all the amazing musicians in that era
The studio version is a lot more psychedelic!! This had to be a least30 years after it came out.
You Need To Watch Movies Easy Riders Back In The 70s
Another great oldies song that gets me movin.
I was in grade school when this came out, it was my favorite song for a very long time. Listen to the live video in 68, of course, his voice was very different back then.
