- Just in time for the Superbowl! This Tim Tebow produced Christian Football movie might just be exactly what we've been looking for over the last 5 years. Join Say Goodnight Kevin as we take a look at All-star athlete Zach Truett finds glory on the high school football field -- working to earn a college scholarship and a ticket out of town. When a devastating knee injury forces Zach to the sidelines, his brother laces up his cleats to compete in track and field. Like with a lot of people who watch TH-cam reviewers, I tend to gravitate towards the more negative reviews because it's always fun watching someone tear a movie or TV show apart. However, in your case, it's nice to hear you talk about the positives for a movie such as this, because you still manage to be entertaining throughout the thing. Good job!

Ugghhhh I am so tired of being told (directly or indirectly) to just leave my questions at the door and JUST BELIEVE. Christians like to give lip service and say that God can handle your questions, while simultaneously skirting around them.
Kevin I appreciate you being honest about your faith journey because in some ways I can relate. You're more relatable than any character of these movies I've seen.
Another sports film? Should we start pool for what percentage of this movie will be about the actual sport versus personal first-world problems (FWP)? I'll bet 20% football, 50% FWP, 30% morality lecture. The review will be 40% thoughtful analysis, 40% great humor, and 20% thought-provoking insight. Seriously, love your reviews!

I don't like that the family kind of slammed down his genuine questions. I like that you brought up that faith is a slow journey--everyone I feel wrestles with a doubt of some kind and it's that wrestling with doubt and intently searching Scripture and History for understanding. I'm a Christian and I'm always asking questions--and I'm dissatisfied when I hear things like "you just know" or "you already know this, so-and-so said it in Sunday school!" Or simple answers that at first makes sense but isn't supported by Scripture or History. I think my least favorite thing is when a Christian with questions is told that "good Christians don't ask questions because they have faith" is absolute nonsense--the men and women of the Bible asked God things all the time, even argued with Him at some point. Theologians challenged everything that was established to deepen their faith. Questions are necessary.

At least there’s actually football in this movie, unlike Catching Faith. This movie does make more sense which has restored a bit of my faith. A tiny...little...bit.
28:02 You might already know this, but in screenwriting "&" means that the two names were in a partnership for the film, while the word "and" means that it was a separate writer that had finished an earlier/different draft. So in this case, my guess would be that Chris Dowling probably did one or two earlier drafts, and then the cowriters Jake McEntire and Jason Baumgardner took over to really solidify the screenplay into what it is.
EDIT: Woops, just discovered someone earlier in the comments *already pointed this out* . Bummer.
HiSilas Wrong order but ultimately no matter what version Chris wrote, final draft approval was ultimately given to the writer that was the producer.
So one could say, “there was a better draft of this script”, however no one could be sure since it was ultimately shelved for another.
But there was a better draft one could say, and does.
I would venture to guess one is probably correct.

This is probably the best movie Kevin’s had to review on this channel, but honestly that isn’t saying much. 🤷🏽
I liked how they are high school students & minors with no parents, but school is just a football outlet. No mention they ever go to class. They have jobs where they apparently open & close the store, too and have no guardian. Then, God kills the one brother to make the other better at sports.

I don't even like football but I love your reviews. As a Christian I wish we were actually creative. This may be off topic but I would love if a team of Christians made a good animated kids show a'la ATLA, She-Ra (2018), Steven Universe etc. these shows are so good and I feel like if a team of good Christian artists built on the style/genre/messaging of these shows, the genre as a whole could become even better. But yeah that's a random thought of mine. 😅
We CAN be creative (Andrew Peterson and Dallas Jenkins say hi), but the problem is we're too afraid of offending the overly fragile Christian moms who don't want their little Johnnys and Susies' faith to be challenged to make something that would be interesting to non-Christians.

This movie really couldn't pick a plotline. There were some good elements in it, but the storyline was all over the map.
Best Christian film was "Sleeper Agent" by Kingdom Studios. I was surprised its was even a Christian movie.

The superintendent speaks at your school because he has a penchant for inspirational speaking? He shows you the Death Crawl scene from Facing the Giants.
You're at Spanish class? You see the Snake King scene from Courageous.
I didn't mind much, because I thought they were good (or at least kinda funny) scenes, but at the same time, it does kinda trick you into thinking the rest of the movie's good. "Wow, this football coach sure is inspirational. I wonder what other kind of lessons this movie has."

30:33 Yeah, I've noticed this a lot with some Christian movies. They'll have non-believers ask what the deal is with God and stuff, it gets brushed aside, and then they become a Christian. It would be neat if there was a movie where questions were asked, they'd talk about it a little, and even if you disagreed with their points, it wouldn't come off as dismissive or unsatisfying.

The acting seems pretty high quality. And as for the music, I am always wary of when films use music with words in it, it always feels shoehorned and forced unless under very specific thematic circumstances.
Football in Space would definitely make it better.

I think it’s super predatory that the adult woman is entertaining a relationship with a high schooler. She has already finished college and begun her career, while he hasn’t even started adulthood. The family dinner scene was so disgusting when her family tested his mettle as a responsible, Christian man worthy of marrying their adult daughter. 🤢 OF COURSE HE ISNT HE’S PROBABLY A MINOR. Even though he pursues her, the blame definitely goes to the adult who knows better and should shut that down immediately. >:(
U know a problem I have with Christian movies that have their Characters ask questions like why good things happen to bad people. And why bad things happen to good people. And the Christians they ask these questions too just stare at them blankly like their bad for asking the question. Instead of acknowledging the fact that heroes in the Bible asked the same questions

You should review The Way Back. It's a faith based film. I think you'd like it for that reason. Sometimes you come off like an athiest trying to debunk Christianity & I find this channel overly negative. I've noticed you;re attracting non-Christian viewers lamenting Christianity. It might be helpful if ppl realized you're a Christian doing this for accountability. I know it's in your about section but non-believers don't know that's a thing in Christianity. Either way I'm glad someone else besides me on here doing reviews of Christians movies including the dvd releases.

Your recap at the end hit me with a thought about the purpose of a Christian film. We do not have the power to bring people to God or make them become Christians; the Bible makes that abundantly clear. So instead of making movies that are about convincing people that God is real or that the Gospel events really happened, what if we instead made movies that promote the exploration of tricky questions regarding faith and humanity? A movie that asks a question is compelling; a movie that answers it for you is not.
Is nobody going to mention how irresponsible it is for either the school or his brother to allow a boy suffering from grand mal seizures to apply for, let alone join, a school track team?
Considering they could be sued for discrimination if they don't? I don't think it's too unbelievable. He probably had to sign a waiver or something.
There's not much difference in having a seizure on the track than on the floor surrounded by desks and chairs.
@@aadams1006 Sure, they could be sued if he was born with epilepsy, but something tells me the conversation about getting hit in the head didn't indicate that.
Regardless of whether or not your state would preclude him from engaging in an activity that involves frequent sprints and praying he doesn't keel over (falls are already VERY bad in track, now imagine them when you can't control your body to stop it), it's still irresponsible to encourage it so much. To put it in perspective, this kid was what, two weeks from literally dying from seizure induction?
To wrap this up, track isn't "safer" than contact sports with regards to epilepsy. They both present risks. If this movie is getting at what I think it's getting at, he wasn't capable of playing football but it's somehow okay for him to bullet sprint down a hard-laced track for several hours a day at full breakneck speed?
People hit hard, yeah. But this is (I think) high school football. The ground hits harder than high schoolers playing football. And the ground doesn't require you to wear a helmet.

But it's not like schools in general care what contact football might be doing to kids brains in general. I think the whole scenario is kind of f'd up. They can get literal brain damage/back and spine damage at an early age. But it's ok because it's a "sport."

4:45 I get being patriotic, especially for those who served in the Army, but really??? That's flag overkill.
I think one of the most obnoxious things about Christian movies is how much they peddle easy answers. Aside from the totally legitimate questions about why bad things happen to good people, the deadbeat dad needing forgiveness really sticks in my craw. How often were these minors left to pay bills on their own? How often was their godmother? How often did they go without because dad was feeling sorry for himself? And it's not enough that they did better and made the best of a bad situation, they ALSO have to forgive their piece-of-shit dad! And he doesn't have to show he's reliable or even willing to do better, they just have to forgive him (which opens so many doors to potential abuse I'm better of not thinking about it.)
It's easy! Just don't think! Don't feel, either! You're worthy of God's love but not your dad's, ha ha!
