I strongly dislike the way this video is presented, as if they did something magical to restore a part of his personality that was lost. People react positively to to the type of music they like. To anyone who has had an older family member to care for, this is "by the book" what you do to keep them happy and entertained. This guy was probably just really bored from sitting in a chair and doing absolutely nothing because his family was too busy with their own lives.
That is so true more than most will ever know. I hate to say it but bad things happen to good people. That is my experience...my personal experience. I’ve done everything the right way, worked hard, spent about 12 years at the university in engineering, been good to people, kind to everyone I meet, taken care of my family, given to others, and all I get is problems. Never ending problems. Poisoned by mold at my employer who happens to be the US Government, defense related, and it was swept under the rug and I’ve spent tens of thousands on medical care for what they did to me (they knew I was getting sick in the building i worked in), and they treat me like dirt, and constantly harass me because I cannot work at the level I did before I got sick. I still work, but I cannot multitask. If I went through the list of unfortunate things that have happened to me in just the past year you’d think I was making it up. So yeah, I’ve never harmed anyone and I’ve always made my own way, and all I get is, frankly, shit. Suffering and anguish. The worst part is when you’re fairly young and sick and nobody believes or understands it. This happened to me at age 35 about 13 years ago. It’s been misery ever since with multiple surgeries and constant pain. I still work. I have a family to take care of. The world is absolutely cruel. I know so many evil people who never have a problem, never a pain, and never face punishment for the evil doing and law breaking. They just skate through life.
J. Patterson hey man, I know I don't know your personal life like that but I know that the most wonderful things are known and experienced by good people. I know that because of your hard work, someone else who looks up to you or looks to you for guidance will hold everything you've ever done for them and for the sake of goodness in the deepest of their hearts and your legacy will live on forever through their lives and the integrity you exemplified. People who live by evil and wrongdoings never truly grasp the depths of love and gratitude, that's why they hurt other people and cause other people problems because they don't understand that level of integrity and trust and security. The only people who would live up to the legacy of evil and wrongdoing are people who will throw their soul away for their ego. Egos die with us, but your goodness will stretch for ages through the hearts of your children and their children, too. Keep your head up :)
Life is like a video game giving you challenges to overcome, maybe your challenge is that you need to stop being so nice, and good to people. Plus you need to sue your employer, sounds like a nice lawsuit if you get a lawyer. Sometimes bad things happen because we don't make the move our intuition told us we should have made. Good luck with everything though.
Respectfully, this man has it better than most. He's cared after in a decent-looking home, the staff seems to care, his daughter visits him, and now he can listen to music every day. Unless you've spent time as a senior caregiver, you don't know how bad it can be.
that's why I'd rather live fast and die young. Not because I want to live recklessly, but it's better to live a full life in the moment. And if you die too soon, fine. It's better than being 100 years old and constantly shitting yourself because you're too old to control when you want to shit. How can anyone be proud of that sort of existence?
lmao imagine in 2070 when there is a video about old man in nursing home too, ''hello grandpa, what song do you want us to play ?'' ''uhhh whip nae nae please''
When he started singing it brought a tear to my eye. Now he can live the rest of his years being able to get enjoyment from music. Instead of just sitting there with very limited stimuli like had the previous 10 years.
this is so amazing...I got so excited smiling ear to ear watching this precious man respond to his music...music is so powerful!! visit me In seventy years I'll b rocking pantera or something
LowSupport yes its beautiful that it makes him happy again but it's also sad that he can't dance to it or really enjoy it but makes you happy again that he enjoys it for what he has
Me and my brother ( im 15 he is 18) go to nursing homes and perform old songs and music to the elderly...it makes me glad to hear some of them singing along and wawing their hands to the music! It really makes my day!!
That’s sweet keep doing that most of them are completely alone and they might not say it but they appreciate it very much! Talking and engaging with them keeps them alive and healthy and happy thanks wish you could have gotten to my father :(
My nan died about two years ago after a stroke, and I remember walking into her hospital room that day and seeing her screaming for her husband (who'd died almost twenty years earlier). She was confused and terrified and it was absolutely heartbreaking, but I started playing her favourite music on my phone ("Hello Dolly" by Louis Armstrong), and almost immediately she stopped screaming, calmed down and began to dance and sing along to the music. It's honestly incredible what music can do to someone's mind and I'm forever thankful that in that moment, we were able to talk to her quietly because it brought back so much of what she'd lost.
It's because your white. I hear countless storys of old white people getting aggressive towards there family. I guess it runs more in white & black people.
@@Goomba_N64 uhhhh super weird take? Your anecdotes don’t count as data. Also very strange to come back to this four year old comment about my nan’s death to this kind of response, so maybe don’t make unnecessary comments on things you clearly don’t understand? She wasn’t aggressive to me or my family. She’d had a stroke and suffered brain damage. She was afraid and in distress. Music calmed her in her last moments.
Girly Girl Why, it's true. More humans have to die. It's not good when the house where old people are is crowded. In Germany i.e. only one sixth of the population is young.
HOW DARE YOU! I sexually identify as a intergalactic terrorist and music killed our whole species of glip glop in the planet squanch. And now I'm hunting down music to avenge my people.
I deserve to die new bone conducting technology will, ( unless the inner ear is damaged ) put the music through their jawbone. When we are old I don't think it will be a problem being deaf with all the tech that will be used on humans
This brought tears to my eyes. This man went from being a lonely old vegetable just waiting to die to a man who interacts, who speaks, & who still has a nice singing voice. I'm sorry it took 10 yrs for someone to realise what he needed. TY for posting this video.
well.. actually... they dont specifically say when the nurse noticed this... they only said that at the time of the recording.. Henry had lived at the care home for 10 years..
It was stunning to, not only see his animated reaction to the music that tapped into his youth....but the prolonged affect it had after the music was gone....of how it made him so coherent and responsive and alive. I suspect that at one point, when we are old....that there is a time in our youthfulness, that still lingers in our minds....and if music is the key to unlock a bit of that youthfulness.....I hope more seniors homes use this beautiful therapy.
Just goes to show you how we can remember so much throughout our lives, even if we temporarily forget it or can't quite make the connections to the events. They are stored in there somwhere, and watching him re-animate after listening was like a miracle. Almost like he plugged in a harddrive and had access to his past files all from the sense of music.
+Casey Grutz awesome ! sitting here reading the horrible comments from kids your post made me stop being angry & bust out laughing, real laughter not lol. I'm 70 & can't imagine getting rick rolled when Im ready for the big nap,the 1980's kids are screwed for sure, thanks for the laugh .
can you imagine this being done in 2077 and the old person putting on headphones and crying because they can finally listen to nicki minaj's anaconda again
kermit sewerside this is the funniest and saddest thing I’ve ever heard lol. Where’s grandma? Oh no she’s in the yard naked singing “ you came in like a wreaking baaaaaallll”
It is crazy how music works with the mind. Elderly individuals with dementia and Alzheimer's and little kids that barely know their names can remember and repeat song lyrics with ease. I think music therapy is something that could prove quite beneficial for the elderly with mental disorders and is worthy of greater investigation and attention.
The rhythm and harmonizing sounds is much easier to log in, as opposed to a conversation. You remember the beat, then the tune, then the first verse, then the second, and so on.
900bz They said in the beginning that it was too difficult for his wife to take care of him. I assure you he gets better care there than at his own house or even his childrens' houses, considering his condition.
Yes, it happens to millions of seniors. Many old folks are "dumped off" and never visited by their relatives. My wife works in one of these depressing places and she is a better friend to them than their family members. True story.
Here my grain of salt 😅. If I get to live long enough that taking care of myself becomes challenging, I will take myself to one of those places right away, without arguing with my relatives or feeling angry about it because by then I would have lived a long life and enjoyed each phase of it, I believe I will want my kids and relatives to live their lives fully too without having to worry about me, if they want to visit cool, if they do not is cool too. My kids will not owe me anything, because when one chooses to be a parent one does everything without expecting anything back, it is your own parenting life experience being "realized" thanks to those kids. So, I am saving for my retirement so I do not become a burden to nobody, I want my relatives to remember me in a positive way (hopefully) :).
I'm so terrified about ever getting that old, i think i would rather be dead than to be so frail and mentally gone i didn't even know who my family was- or myself, but it's even scarier to think of my parents ever reaching that state. it's heart breaking watching this.
Relax m'dear...you're not alone! Seeing this is heartbreaking but remember, should you reach such an age you will no longer have this fear! You will be at peace knowing you have lived a long and good life. I look at it in this way after my dear old grandad once told me, "If i died right now it wouldn't bother me too much as i've lived a long life and i've lived a good life and have had my time". I miss my grandad...i let him down to say the very fucking least.
You know what's the worst having your father slowly go downhill my dad used to be loving and would take me out to any place I wanted then he got a tumor maybe when I was 13 or 15 and he's been getting worse most days he doesn't know my name and he yells out all the time.
Gus Rawson Well, aren't you just a lil ray of sunshine?I think both of these ppl you responded to may need a lil reassurance or relating, at least. My mom used to say "if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all". I'll just say this to you, k? I'm sorry you have had a life that has led you to stop giving a fuck.
I used to sing classics and hymns at nursing homes with my mom. You can't know how much it means to some of these elderly to hear the music they grew up with. I remember singing at an Alzheimer's ward, and seeing some of those people start to sing along from what memory they had left was amazing.
most of these elderly people have given up and found that most people in the nursing home aren't anyone they could talk to (illness, etc) this is coming from my grandma's perspective, she is 98 and she cooperates perfectly and doesn't have any mental problems (apart from like the stuff we have rn tbh, like depression) and she tells me it's hard to talk to people, it's lonely. when she loses someone, it must be heartbreaking there because once you find someone in a place like that, you become attached. only you two understand each other. i think this man is finally alive again with a will, he has finally found his favourite thing in life, and something which he can enjoy and relate to. music is great because it doesn't need to be with someone else, you can have fun on your own
My great grandmother immigrated to the States from Italy and, in her late 90's had to go into a nursing home where she found that the woman in the room across the hall was someone with whom shed grown up and they hadn't seen each other in over 70 years.
isabella stump Just beautiful to me. Absolutely beautiful how music makes us feel, and what it can do for us. Especially a man like this. Severe dementia, suffering from chronic seizures... but after listening to HIS music.... So beautiful to see.
As someone who works with people with dementia, music is magic. I’ve seen some of my residents who never speak a word or who are always serious, light up and start singing when they hear a familiar song. It brings back memories of them being with their kids or dancing with their spouse or a place they’ve visited. Music has so much power. It’s a very emotional moment for me when I play music for my residents and they light up like this. ❤
At 4:50 -ish I burst into very emotional tears...Especially when this DEAR, sweet man began singing & talking about his enjoyment of music & feeling love...God Bless him & all the loving, responsible carers of the World who work so patiently & gently with our elderly...You have my deepest admiration & respect...
In his day.. Cab calloway was actually hated on by religion. He sang songs about sex and street life. In an odd way many looked upon him like the way they look down on some gangsta rap today.
Talented people like that shouldn't end up in places like that. My dad was the same way and just died in an institution a year ago and now I wish I could talk to him about so many things that I just couldn't bother when he was there. I start to understand him more now that he is gone - it's a shame.
I spent much of my chidhood years in such places. They're quite horrible. If you're not significant disabed upon arrival, they'll get you there pretty quickly.

We watched this clip in Adolescent and Adult development. My professor is very adamant on teaching us about the development of older adults, and how they adapt to life once they grow old. He showed us this in correlation with the practice of Music Therapy in older adults, specifically those with demetia (neuro-cognitive disorders), and how it can drastically change their cognitive processes for the better. It's such a wonderful thing

This is so wonderful! My mother had Lewy Body Dementia. She wouldn't be able to hold much of a conversation but could sing songs from her childhood. Music is very powerful and when you combine it with visuals of things they like it can open them right up.

Man the world's cruel to the nicest of people.
TigerStrike facts !
So damn beautiful, music is a precious thing that can (if only for a while) transcend time!

It's the way of life homeboy get used to it
that's why I'd rather live fast and die young.
Not because I want to live recklessly, but it's better to live a full life in the moment. And if you die too soon, fine.
It's better than being 100 years old and constantly shitting yourself because you're too old to control when you want to shit. How can anyone be proud of that sort of existence?

So very sorry for your loss. 🙏🏻♥️

You remember the beat, then the tune, then the first verse, then the second, and so on.
hunterspider51 I also find it fascinating that musicians who speak English as a second language seemingly lose their accent while singing.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Our elders hold the key to life.
All we have to do is be patient and listen to what they have to say.❤
10 years in that place?
What a waste of final years
It doesnt matter where he could go im just saying its a waste
900bz "it doesn't matter where he could go" lmao so basically everything is a waste
Jono Murphy You reach a point where you stop giving a fuck
You know what's the worst having your father slowly go downhill my dad used to be loving and would take me out to any place I wanted then he got a tumor maybe when I was 13 or 15 and he's been getting worse most days he doesn't know my name and he yells out all the time.

@Pierre M,
Shut up, reprobate!
I used to sing classics and hymns at nursing homes with my mom. You can't know how much it means to some of these elderly to hear the music they grew up with. I remember singing at an Alzheimer's ward, and seeing some of those people start to sing along from what memory they had left was amazing.
most of these elderly people have given up and found that most people in the nursing home aren't anyone they could talk to (illness, etc)
this is coming from my grandma's perspective, she is 98 and she cooperates perfectly and doesn't have any mental problems (apart from like the stuff we have rn tbh, like depression) and she tells me it's hard to talk to people, it's lonely. when she loses someone, it must be heartbreaking there because once you find someone in a place like that, you become attached. only you two understand each other.
i think this man is finally alive again with a will, he has finally found his favourite thing in life, and something which he can enjoy and relate to. music is great because it doesn't need to be with someone else, you can have fun on your own
oh and i forgot to say they also have problems like dementia which doesn't help lol
Ofcourse they give up. They’re sedated so they stay quiet and nobody has to over care for them. Sucks
louisa thank you for your comment,

right? I noticed that, too. It's still in him. ☺
