  • My old VW distributor was in questionable condition, so I decided to replace it with a new Pertronix and coil. Here's my adventure with that!

Pertronix are tough and reliable. I installed a brakerless ignition kit on my distributor and a Flamethrower ignition coil on my ‘89 mitsubishi pajero(Montero in the U.S.A.) Till now it keeps on firing without a miss for almost 20years. Almost no maintenance, except for distributor cap oxidation on the internal 4 terminals and the rotor tip because of the normal high voltage arcing. And sometimes checking the lubrication on the advancer mechanism of the distributor. Those are not regular preventive maintenance only when I feel like doing it.🙂

Unfortunately like everything else, what you bought 20 years ago isn't necessarily what you're getting now.

remote start switch, and a can or two of starter fluid. Saves your battery and sanity

You really shouldn’t use starter fluid or brake cleaner to start an engine except for an emergency, they wash the oil off from cylinder walls and can cause scoring and damage. Use 2cycle fuel (with a little oil in it) much easier on your engine!

I hope you have better luck than I did. I went back to the tried and true points system. I carry an extra set of point, condenser and rotor and cap just in case. That old distributor has a dual vacuum cannister. I don't think that's the right vacuum cannister for a beetle.

So how's the pertronix holding up? @guillette77

With the Pertronix kits the original timing mark can't be used anymore, you have to time it by ear and lock it down and leave it there. Annoying, but many people have had this problem after installing the Pertronix kits, it has to do with the pickup module in the kit I think.

Time it with all mechanical advance in @ 3500 rpm vacuum hoses disconnected. 28-30 degrees BTDC. Let idle timing fall will it may.

Maybe your carb needs a little tuning or the auto choke is not in tip-top shape. That classic bug is surely in for nice treat with those new set of ignition system.

Yeah, I need to do a little research on how to properly tune it. I’ve been busy lately ( deer season is open!) but I’ll be back to it soon! Thanks for watching!

@@bobsbarnworkshop Make sure your choke is just screwed on tight thats usually the problem and pump your peddle twice not once before you start it, mine is a sure fire every time in my 70 Beetle.

Looks like you should use the old finger over the old #1 spark plug hole to get back to tdc power stroke

I can tell by the distributor rotor and the pulley timing marks when It’s on cylinder 1 TDC. The rotor points towards cylinder 1 when the timing marks line up, if it was on the exhaust stroke the rotor would point back towards the driver side taillight.

Did you block off the second vacuum hose ?.

I think so! I checked all over the manifold and carb for any unused ports and capped them!
