VW timing

  • How to check and set the timing on your aircooled VW. If you've installed a new distributor, built a new engine or you feel like it isn't running quite right you'll need to run through this procedure.
    I recently installed a new pertronix flamethrower distributor so the engine had to be re-timed, the standard timing for these distributors is 32 degrees before tdc @ 3000 RPM.

    To be honest....maybe im just lucky but...i put my pully to TDC and also put my distributor pointing to the line and my engine runs like an absolute boss...never used a timing light..did run across this figured id check it out its basically what i do with my engine but with the headache lol

      It really is, knowing the RPM makes things much easier.

    Is taking the vacuum hose off and plugging it correct

    Shouldn't you be moving the distributor once you're at 3000 to get the correct degree? Looks like it would take 3 hands to do this. Or do you rev up and check, then let off, move distributor, and rev up again?

      It was actually about 10 times better than most on here
