    Not bad for a video made for $400.00, it was filmed in Avi and Kevin's closet in their apartment. Won their first grammy with this gem. Kevin, the beatboxer---played piano age 4, cello age 6 and saxaphone age 10. Check out his version of the song "Down" on his page to see him be a freaking genius or Kevin's fifth which will blow you away. (Kevin Olusola) Kiss from a Rose Live is a must. Warning: the rabbit hole is not only deep but wide because they also have side projects. Also their evolution videos are a must: Music, Beyonce, Rhianna and Ariana Grande. Live performances should include PopSpring 2016 which consists of three originals and the evolution of Michael Jackson. I am going to stop right here before I write a book. (Whew)

      Also, Kevin dropped out of a premed program at Yale to join the group, and he speaks several languages. And I believe he has perfect pitch. They discovered him through his TH-cam videos where he was "cello boxing" - beatboxing and playing cello simultaneously

      @MarkAdolph-xz6or Kevin did not just drop out, he received his Doctorate. Then he flew to LA when Scott picking him up at LAX. Avi Kaplan was "a friend of a friend" who is the unofficial 6th member Ben Brum. Scott did convince Kirstie to leave college in Oklahoma, and Scott got Mitch to miss his High School Graduation Ceremony. Scott hates labels, hence no official leader--- but Scott is always working behind the scenes.

    Kevin Olusola (brother on percussions) & Avi Kaplan (white jesus on basss) got dubbed as "Meat & Potatoes" by Shawn Stockman from Boyz II Men who was one of the judges in the reality competition show where Pentatonix debuted, because they were basically the hearty meat & potatoes of the group. Scott, Kirsty, & Mich struck GOLD getting them to join the group as their percussion team for the Sing-Off...

    • @angiepen
      @angiepen หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      I agree. The three in the middle are absolutely awesome, but I think if Sing-Off had allowed The Trio to compete as a *trio* they wouldn't have made it past the first few weeks. Kevin and Avi give them the percussion they need, and fill up the musical space to make their songs sound rich and full. They won the lottery *twice* hooking up with Kevin and Avi right before the competition.

  • @declaneric
    @declaneric 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +29

    To clarify, Pentatonix does write original music. Their long-time producer, Ben Bram, has been with them since the beginning. He helps them come up with the arrangements, both for their original music and their covers. And their arrangements are written so they can perform these songs live - which is important to them, because their abilities are so sky high that they are accused of faking a lot of this stuff, that it's put in in post production. So they always want to be able to reproduce the songs on stage at their concerts. The arrangements account for that.

    • @oregonchick76
      @oregonchick76 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The Wall of Sound production led to some amazing music. If you haven't watched it, PBS ran a documentary series several years ago called Soundbreaking about the production behind rock's greatest music. It covers every era of rock and you hear producers and musicians talk about what went into creating the most memorable and timeless songs to ever make it to radio. It's a fun watch while still being really insightful and (dare I say it?) educational.

    PTX is just one of the finest vocal groups out there. They are 13 years together as a group with just one member change. Avi, the bass with the beard left in 2017, replaced by Matt Sallee.
    KO is an amazing musician, song writer and beatboxer.
    Everybody thinks the group keeps changing but it’s just their look they change. Kirstie and Mitch look different in just about every video.
    You really need to see them do this live. That Hollywood Bowl 2022 live video is the best. People think this song was made with lots of studio tricks. Watching them do it live will prove otherwise.

    They won their first Grammy for this. They also perform this live ( check out the Hollywood Bowl in 2022) The 2nd was for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy ( from the ballet Nutcracker, imagine a band with no instruments performs a song with no lyrics) and the 3rd was for Jolene ❤with Dolly Parton. They have 2 albums nominated as well in recent years that did not win. For Spring 2025 Scott Hoying is up for Grammy this year for his single “Rose Without Thorns” for the arrangement. He wrote and produced the song as well as bringing Saje and Tonality. Hollywood Walk of Fame Star 2023 as well.
    Before you get into too much of their solo work maybe Can’t Hold Us, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, and their evolution of Michael Jackson. For originals I like Sing, Love Again, Happy Now, Run To You.
    Their Pop Spring 2016 ( professionally recorded by MTV in Japan) has 3 originals and the Michael Jackson medley live.
    You both would like “Recording of Evergreen” which is an approx 16 minute look at the bts recording of their Christmas album Evergreen. They are genuinely nice people and have lots of bts videos. They won a TV show in 2011 and got a Sony contract, but Sony dumped them just after. Pentatonix took to social media and did their own videos, and Fifgen did the post production after this was indeed recorded in their apartment with a prop and other budget ( I believe they had 1 ring light) of approx $400. Anything they have done is amazing and they have had some fun guests on their songs ( mostly guests on Christmas songs)
    ❤❤❤❤❤

    "The brother" is Kevin Olusola. He is the beatboxer, a high tenor, classically trained cellist and Yale Graduate. His father is from Nigeria and his mother is from Grenada.
    Deep bass is Avi Kaplan. Yes he has a bear here. You should see that beard now.
    Avi is a classically/operatically trained Basso Profundo but has a fabulous range and can even sing whistle notes with his overtone singing.
    Avi is a prolific writer. He left PTX in 2017
    Here is a sample of his last release.

    I love seeing people discover pentatonix. They are so very talented, and everything they put out, they make a point of making sure that they can perform it live, so you won’t find anyone multitracked or instruments not shown on screen. They have used instruments in a few of their songs, but it is 99% all accapella. The bass in this video, Avi, has since gone on to do his own thing, but is still super friendly with them all, and they found a new bass that still manages to k!ll it. I look forward to seeing you go down this rabbit hole!

    Love this reaction! Daft Punk is so good live. They continue to perform it often since it is still so popular and was their first of 3 Grammy wins. There's another really nice mashup they performed years later after their bass, Avi, left and was replaced by Matt. He and Kevin are as good a team as Avi and Kevin were. It's a mashup of "New Rules/Are You That Somebody" which provides an acapella take of Timbaland's iconic beats. It doesn't get recommended nearly enough in my opinion. Another of my favorites is their cover of Kiiara's "Gold" which goes back to Avi era and is a live performance. It's such a little jewel of an arrangement! You can't go wrong with PTX from ANY era and we are ALWAYS here for it, lol.

  • @venus5019
    @venus5019 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Stated previously:
    I knew of Pentatonix from surfing TH-cam. I didn't know about "The Sing-Off".
    I was right after Thanksgiving. I was bored w/ holiday reruns/sports specials, so surfed through TV channels when I came upon The Sing-Off's show for that year. It was the first episode the year & watched entire season episodes to see that Home Free won. I've even watched reaction videos & compilation entire season episodes on TH-cam winning the Sing-Off.
    BTW Pentatonix was one of the ensembles that joined up weeks before the auditions only specifically for the reality show competition. 3 were HS friends (Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado). They sang together for a few years, then went off to different colleges.
    One joined a college a cappella group & found out last minute about the competition. Contacted his friends in various colleges, all agreed to compete. Ready to apply when told needed a beatboxer & bass to qualify literally last minute. They recruited Kevin Olusola (outstanding beatboxer alien similar to Adam of Home Free) & Avi Kaplan a bass who was an operatic singer.
    They are the oddity & miracle in that a matter of only a few days, developed a sound, auditioned & got accepted into the competition. Rest is history winning it w/ not only outstanding vocals, but great bass & beatbox. They had only worked together for less than a week's time before the show. While others had years of experience & some toured on "circuit's".
    Ironically, timing plays into this; Home Free had auditioned 2xs for this competition & were rejected year Pentatonix won. They changed members after 2nd audition. Tim & Austin joined the group prior to the last audition & got in. They were AFTER Pentatonix won the year earlier. Home Free may have been forced out had they competed the same year & not won.
    Sing-Off didn't gain the popularity as AGT although was on for several years not just the seasons Pentatonix & Home Free won. It had legit knowledgeable judges & good a capella groups.
    One of problems of the Sing-Off it was pre-taped which left out the audience participation. It was was done in the summer while geared for "seasonal" viewing pretending to be done at that time. Nearing the semi-finals some of the groups sang Christmas songs with the judges. There also was no consistent date it would air so no one would know when would air. Also they didn't limit size of groups so had full glee college groups & church choirs competing along with group sizes like Pentatonix, VoicePlay, Home Free & Philharmonics.
    I urge you to watch from The Sing-Off from the first episode to last of Home Free w/ Voiceplay & Pentatonix's competitions. Timing critical in that Pentatonix won year before & Home Free year after. The other years' winners & competitors didn't get the fame as them. Pentatonix have their unique style of sound & presentation as well as Home Free & Voice Play. Home Free can do serious, but more are like the Monkee's style while VoicePlay being former Disney & Universal entertainment singers do more theatrical using costumes & draw from The Hobbit music & even Encantato.
    Pentatonix were TH-cam channel favs. They're the first to do detailed videos. Currently has > 19 million subscribers & 5 billion views. The group's video tribute to Daft Punk had received > 355 million views as of November 20, 2021. Avi resigned after performing & helping to establish the group after few years. He's now making music on his own. He has his own media accounts & sings along with other groups.

    Avi Kaplan has been an independent artist away from Pentatonix. Nowadays, Avi, Costelluci (Voice Play) & Foust (Home Free) are doing side projects w/ each other groups or on their own. Home Free is categorized as country (although do jazz, R&B & rock). They did a version of Boyz II Men's 'End of The Road' as tribute to one of judges on the Sing Off (Shawn Stockman). Prior to Pentatonix, they've done country versions of songs w/ Oak Ridge Boys, Kenny Rogers & other well-known country artists.

    Great reaction, gentlemen! Re their interactivity with their TH-cam audience: they had won a record contract when they took The Sing-Off at the end of 2011 - and the company dropped them a month later because the corporation couldn't figure out what to do with them. Pentatonix took to TH-cam, producing and promoting their own videos. They also starting touring heavily (Ben Bram, their arranger and later also their recording producer, drove the bus for the first year or two). This 2014 video was planned to be recorded (sound and video) in a studio, but the arrangements fell through - so they went back to original techniques and recorded it themselves in one of their shared apartments, to let the (very good) post-production work start as scheduled. The Grammy was for arrangement, BTW, as was their subsequent Grammy for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. I'd make your own judgment about Matt Sallee's work on bass (after Avi's 2017 departure). Checkout the mashup New Rules x Are You That Somebody.
    ETA: re Kevin Olusola as percussion - he was discovered by the group beatboxing and _playing the cello_ at the same time in a viral TH-cam video. He was finishing up at Yale University at the time. As a teen, he played Carnegie Hall twice - once on cello, once on sax. You can see him play cello with Pentatonix on several songs - try Say Something and more recently, Kiss from a Rose.

    I never pass up an opportunity to watch first-time reactions to this masterpiece! BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if Pharrell Williams did sing that song you referred to. I think he was close with Nile Rogers. Happy to see you both going down this PTX rabbit hole. You should watch some live performances, it will affirm these are great musicians!

    The youtube algorithm gods brought me here! 🙌🏾
    I love Pentatonix! I found them by accident one day listening to Todrick Hall who was on American Idol and went viral for some flash mob videos. I happened to see him and Scott singing together. I was blown away by Scott's singing and was pleasantly surprised to find Pentatonx. Been a fan ever since. You should check out their Macklamore cover of Can't Hold us. It's crazy they did that song Acapella.

    When I hear things like this, having sung in a choir for 35 years, I always think, "When are they breathing?!" There are just no breaks in the music! They do amazing work. Back in the '80s we had the Manhattan Transfer, who did a bunch of jazz songs a cappella. Their version of "Birdland" is still among my favorites. You should react to that - but first react to Weather Report's original of it with instruments. That helps you appreciate the complexity of the song and imagine how difficult it would be to execute with voices alone. I've seen some sheet music for it, and was trying to get my choir director to let us do it in a small group for our patriotic concert, but we didn't have enough voices who could sing it to pull that off. Now that I've gotten old and am losing my singing voice, I suppose I'll never get to sing it!

    When Pentaonix did an acapella reality show before their debut. Ari (the bass) and Kevin (the beatboxer) were called "The meat and potatoes" of the group. They were a 5-person crew up against people with 20 or 30 singers. Bringing the house down every time. Scott (the blonde tenor) does most of their arrangements as far as I know.

    I loved Pentatonix since the first time I heard them; they hit the scene and were SO bold, so creative, so out there, so engaged with their fans, using TH-cam to its best advantage for engagement; they were so creative with their videos and everything. The brash enthusiasm of youth and "new-ness."
    I've kinda' lost track of them for a while, though. I feel that they started taking themselves more "seriously," and I haven't seen as many "fun" videos and the like from them in a while. I wish them all the best; I felt like I got to "know" the members (as much as a parasocial relationship goes) and I have a deep respect for Mitch, Scott, Kirstie, Kevin, Avi, (and even Matt, who was Avi's replacement, though I don't feel I got to "know" him as well). But they're all great human beings, and I wish the best for them, but I kinda' miss that young, enthusiastic group.
    Frankly, since Avi parted ways, they haven't felt the same. I've followed Avi's path; he's making some great music.
    I check in on their TH-cam page from time to time, to see if they've got anything new since I last visited, and I don't see as much as I wish I would. I have liked the original songs they've come out with; not just covers (which they do SO well!) but original songs, and they're beautiful. Now they're touring, performing, have busy lives, marriages, families, etc. I get it.
    All the best, Pentatonix members! Love to you, whatever you're up to.

    Pentatonix are great and their covers are of course fantastic from classics to new releases. They also have some great originals that, while still acapella, touch on different musical genres. Examples are "Love Again" which sits in the EDM category and "Can't Sleep Love" which has a nice mellow groove of Motown.

    I hope we have a new Pantaholic in the making here! I have not heard a single song from PTX that isn't just amazing! You should check out theit collaboration with Lindsey Stirling with their cover of Radioactive!! Lindsey Stirling is another TRULY amazing talent. "the bearded dude" is Avi Kaplan and he is a basso profundo. And Kevin is not only a super talented beat boxer but can also play cello while beat boxing and can also sing and is a multi instrumentalist.

    First...thank you so much for reacting to PTX!! I love watching you react to them (and other vids you've reacted to).
    Production Note: The video lip-sync doesn't line up with the audio. While it's ok-ish, maybe, for other types of performances, it's horrible for a cappella performances, because viewers are watching their lips for every sound. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying we'd appreciate some attention to this. Thanks so much...and thanks again for reacting to PTX!

    I caught Pentatonix on the tv show "The Sing-off" It wasn't usually my kind of show but it was interesting seeing them come up with another crazy performance week to week. Apparently they found the beatboxer Kevin on TH-cam kind of last minute before they competed on the show because they had no one to do percussion and ended up winning the show. When I saw them live Kevin had a part of the set where he beatboxed while playing the cello. It was a good show. Maybe a little too much talking but they can definitely perform.

    PTX made it thru promoting themselves on YT and their loyal fans and patrons and have not forgotten them! The record contract they won on the Sing Off contest was dropped after they all moved to LA. The Sony subsidiary prez declared them hard to market and ditched them. They want to YT and proved differently.
    Some of us have not forgotten that and are really happy Dimash has his own company. (hold a grudge? who, me?)
