Sackin Metals hooked us up with two 1" Titanium plates that we bolted together. We shot 50 cals baddest rounds at it. We shot the SLAP, SLAP-T, Raufoss MK211, MK263 AP, and Israel's API.
We also shot all of these rounds out of a M2HB 50 Cal to get the max speed out of these rounds.

Iv shot those MK211s what makes them so strong is the RDX explosive inside of them ,but at 65 to 100 dollars a round depending on where you buy them , and contrary to popular belief they are not illegal to own but who can afford them

Yes I too have two 1 inch Titanium Plates, a modified M2 Browning, .50 BMG API, and 2 bullet resistant panels.
yes we also have enough money to buy 2 machined 1 inch plates of high quality titanium, 180 dollars worth of 50 bmg and a 50 cal on hand lying around under our beds

After recent events I’ll forever cringe when I see people shoot .50 SLAP rounds.
what happened?
An RN-50 had its threaded breech cap come off after firing an unknown number of SLAP rounds, seriously injuring the shooter. Because metal expands when heated, the threads would have to be machined loose enough to allow the breech cap to be removed by hand after firing for the loading procedure, indicating a flawed design
@@luislongoria6621 there’s a crimp on these slap rounds, there wasn’t on Scott’s. His were homemade by someone.
@@luislongoria6621 this is the only time a serbu rn50 has blown up. It was not a design flaw. That slap round Scott shot was about 160k psi, instead of a normal pressure round.
@@karolbomba6704 Kentucky ballistics had a slap round destroy his .50 caliber single shot gun explode and injure him during filming a video.
M2HB, chronograph, and all the exotic varieties of ammo. I don't think I could have asked for more in a 50 BMG penetration test.

Phantom camera
Two plates provide more stopping power because of iterative energy dissipation. Simply put, the energy it takes to penetrate the first layer is spread over an area much wider than the projectile and the point of impact on the second layer is much wider than the point of impact on the first layer. In a single layer of armor a punching shear profile develops with a smaller and more consistent area through the mass... ya, materials engineer. Sorry to nerd out on ya.

Pretty much the principle behind Whipple plating on spacecraft, the first layer absorbs the initial impact and spreads it out before it hits the second layer of plating which catches the much smaller and lighter peices.
Makes me wonder, if the second plate was "floating", i.e. loosened bolts to allow it to travel in the plane of the projectile, would it provide even better protection?
pretty sure the opposite is true. I have seen test done with steel and they found that 2 inches is better than 2 one inch plates but they did not say why. they found if there was a space between the 1 inch plates then the round would tumble after the first and hit the second sideways most times but together they were not as good as the 2 inch. again not sure why ....
I think quite the contrary. Penetrator has to move the material in front of it to the sides and front, when there is even a tiny bit of gap between plates, material can moved much easier - first the bulge on the back of the plate appears, then the penetrator goes through, moves the metal freely to the sides, then proceeds to do the same with the 2nd plate.
With 1 homogenous plate the metal is pushed into the metal, that has nowhere to go. Imagine your penetrator is 0,75 inch into the 2 inch plate. To create a bulge with the metal it pushes in front of it, it has to move 1,25" of titanium! That takes a lot more energy, so pretty much at this point, it pushes metal into metal. And only after it penetrates the whole plate, it can move some metal freely to the sides and front.
2:58 run your playback speed at .5x and look how that ricochet bounces off the dirt 5 feet from his left....

I am in disbelief how the Israeli round managed to bounce back after going that deep into titanium.
Also, how that round is in perfect condition is nuts.
If you saw this in movies you would be put off thinking thats just way too unrealistic
That's why is should be pointy. The shape of the missile has everything to do with the payload delivery.
Now we know. If perfectly shaped .50 cal rounds bounce off the chest of Superman. They are Israeli rounds.
Stronger than titanium?
@berkayxj8 TiAlV has a RHA equivalence of about 70%. ERA (and NERA and NxRA ) work by constantly shoving the flyer plates into the HEAT jet as they are bulging due to the explosion.
Calling bullshit on that round, it is not in the slightest deformed and if you know how energy transfer and bouncing work you do know, that if the round penetrated this far in, it sure as hell does not dig itself out and bounces back. All of this, mind you while being in perfect factory condition. If it did, you should be able to easily recreate the bounce and retrieve another one like that.
I wouldn’t say the M2 isn’t capable of a high level of accuracy. Carlos Hathcock took out a Vietcong soldier at 2,500 yards with one in 1967 with two rounds.

Was it with a SLAP? They are generally less accurate than the more conventional types of 50bmg (my guess it’s because the lack of a boat tail)
Yeah, out of a group of VC and he didn't hit the one he was aiming for. It's not exactly sub MOA, but for an MG that is a good thing. MGs aren't designed to be accurate as they are supposed to be suppressive/area denial which is easier without pinpoint accuracy.
@@grandadmiralthrawn8116 They are less accurate due to the sabot. The sub caliber projectile (or penetrator) isn't connected to the barrel rifling so they don't spin while in flight which makes them inherently inaccurate.

Nope. SLAP rounds weren’t invented until the late 1980’s. They were first used in Desert Storm.
The kind of setup you've created there is actually quite interesting. You can find similar protection on spacecrafts where there is two layer protection. The first layer is designed to shatter/destabilize the projectile and the other one catches it. Those are solid layers with a specific gap between them though. Your setup has one more variable in the stretching bolts, giving just enough flexibility to slow down and stop/return the round. I think it would have been interesting to see the first two rounds re-tested with the c clamp setup. I believe this time they would have made it through just like the last two rounds, since the plates would now stay in place.
Two years later but indeed, on spacecraft it's called a "Whipple shield" or "Whipple armor" if you will. It was invented by Dr. Fred Whipple, an American astronomer. Just some added fun facts
When shooting the m2, try not sitting on your foot, and put both feet on the cross bar holding the T&E, so you don't have to bend over to get low enough to look through the sights. Also sandbags on the tripod helps alot.

I'd strongly recommend getting something to cover his noggin and vitals. It could still come back through that crack. See if an armor company will sponsor you if nothing else guys.

@@thevalorousdong7675 with those rounds, they can come back at you even if the steel is at an angle. They make a cavity straight in and rebound back. Firsthand experience.
Eye protection isn't likely to slow down a bullet that penetrated 40mm of Titanium, is it ?
As an engineering student, I would say that maybe shooting through a solid piece would have to overcome shear movement in the center plane of the plate as the plate flexes while the bullet would overcome only the much more negligible surface contact between two plates. Also the plates are more likely to deflect a larger amount if there is two because of this lack of shear resistance and more deflection means more stress. These are just thoughts.
2:29 for the ISS nasa made tests shooting titanium balls out of a compressed gas canon that reached mach 10 (to simulate space debris, pretty cool) and they use space grade aluminum for armor, they tried 2 things, 1 several inches thick block, and 2 really spaced out fraction of an inch layers, which like a feet separation, they found out the big block got a buge ass hole, because all of the energy was distributed in it, both huge entrance and exit hole, but for the other one, they saw a big defomation on the external layer a big ball, but a small one almost caliber sized hole on the second one, and realized it was better for protection purposes to use size and separation to spend the energy of the proyectile, rather than bigger plates, so they used the second type, and filled the separation with kevlar and some sort of self sealing fluid, so that in the worst case scenario, you have a small hole that went through the station, but it did so like butter and you've got a dutch boy with the dam situation, and not a tank round sized hole in the hull, and in practice, the extra density of the fluid spends the energy more than the solid so it stops it like regular kevlar would do with a small calibre round. hvit.jsc.nasa.gov/shield-development/ here's the link.

SLAP rounds are just stupid fast.. almost 3k vs almost 4k fps, speed beats armor
If it's well made with the right metal, too brittle and the round will just shatter
Yes iv shot them "SLAP" SABOTED LIGHT ARMOR PIERCING " rounds also, but In most 50 cal rifles its a good idea to first remove the muzzle brake, also if the sabot comes off while traveling down the barrel it can ruin the barrel because slap rounds can wobble down the barrel

I think you would have had better results if the plates were clamped together better. Better grade of bolts, more or larger bolts, and or something like the c clamp. You may have to worry about bolts flying back at you though if you have bolts that don’t stretch.
The ma deuce is not a spray and prey weapon. Carlos Hathcock in Vietnam achieved a 2500 yrd kill with his rifle scope mounted on one
Well, the question is, how many rounds did he fire at far-away targets, before he scored that hit? I'm not talking about this specific case, but overal. Machineguns can be fairly accurate, but still at over 1000 yards the dispersion will be pretty severe.

@@IllidanSturmgrimmDeusVult I didn't mean that particular encounter, but overal - and basically he fired 1 shot, the previous one he used to sight-in the weapon, so it shouldn't be counted, if I got it right. Anyway, you can fire at people at long range for 2 weeks and finally score a hit. Does it mean your weapon is super accurate?
We don't know how many times he fired long range and how many of these shots landed. We know that in that particular encounter he landed the 1st shot he fired, but that's it, I'm certain marksmanship was spot on, but it doesn't tell us much about the weapon.

It's drives me nuts when yall both announce what round is next lol. Love the content.
Furthermore some one in the chat room "ruskitytan" has already pointed out, when there is a gap between plates it allows material to bulge with out infringement, allowing the round to push material out of the way to move to the next plate to do the same. Where as when you have one solid plate the "bulge" has no where to expand and pushes into more material at the back making the metal denser and denser as the round tries to move further into the plate. ( simple experiment, get a few of your friends, say 4 of them. Line them up one standing behind the other person say one foot apart. Now walk up and push the very first person. I guarantee you he will fall back bumping into his friend who will fall back bumping into the guy behind him and so on till they are all on the floor. Now repeat the experiment but this time have each person place his hands firmly on the shoulders of the friend in front of him, with 3 guys that are behind the first friend having their hands extended and placed on the shoulders of the person in front of them. Now push your first friend and see what happens. They won't fall. People here also confusing glass armor that has layers thinking its done cause it makes the window stronger. But glass behaves different than metal and not applicable to this scenario. Glass is layered cause you have hard brittle material, then soft elastic plastic between layers to prevent glass from fracturing and the break traveling the whole length of the glass window.

Using a slap round is like using a 5.56 NATO green tip rather than a 7.62 Soviet FMJ. More speed,narrowe tip (harder material),less overall diameter All things for better for penetration

Maybe a 220 swift round if they even make it in a AP round , I have a 220 swift and it's definitely a barrel burner at over 4000 fps , im in the process of trying to neck a 220 case down to a 17 caliber , but I have to turn my own custom barrel, also I'd probably have to turn my own solid bullets as well , I wanna say I chronoed mine at 4670 fps

Then it would not be a head on impact. A 1/4” could probably deflect a 50 and keep it from penetrating if angled.
The worse damage I seen in this video was how the shooter was sitting on his foot. It doesn’t hurt now because he is young. Stop now and when you are 40 you won’t have to have knee replacement. Ask me how I know.

Yeah, you'd think they got an M2, they would know to bring a cinder block or sandbag to sit on.
What's really weird is he had to lean forward while sitting on his foot so really he should have just sat in the dirt and had a more comfortable position.
After 53 years as an Aerospace Tool and Die Maker IMHO, the two one inch plates would be much stronger than a single two inch plate. The reason being each of the one inch plates has a super hard "Skin" of condensed Titanium on each side of EACH plate, meaning the round must puncture this skin 4 times instead of puncturing this skin twice on the 2" plate. After machining tons of Titanium during my career, once you cut through the "Skin" this inner virgin material machines more like Aluminum than Nickel Based Alloys like Inconel. As always, I love your content and we will see if the 50 Cal. is up to the task at hand! Earl Harrell

True but the Depleted uranium round is a restricted material round and Civilians can't get them , I know they are manufactured for the A10 s cannon and the Abrams battle tank Dart. Iv never seen them in 50 BMG rounds , iv always wondered why the United States military has never developed a bullet along the same principles of the RPG round with its hot jet of mold copper that burns through most other battle tanks even with reactive armor, i mean the mk 211 round is a good round but it can definitely be improved ,
setting those 2 plates like that is literally creating a high velocity trampoline
Fairly new to the channel so I may find that you've already done it. But it would be cool to see more vids with maybe thinner layers of metal. It was interesting to see what the bullets did and how they expanded as they were passing through. Anyways, great vids and thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the video guys! I keep hearing the same thing about the accuracy of the SLAP rounds. Mirrors my experience with saboted 30--06 way back when. I thought I could have a super duper varmint gun shooting 22 caliber bullets out of my 30-06. But the accuracy was truly awful.

Whether you should use one or 2 plates really depends on a multitude of factors.
The only thing the AP rounds may have benefitted from, was the stripping/elongation/deformation of the nuts and bolts, effectively leaving the plates more distance to stop the penetrator.
Heck... the large deformation, and hardly any deformation of the projectile, is likely the reason for the "throw-back", as the elastic deformation returns to whatever plastic deformation that has been done. I wish you had an ultra high speed camera for a comparative test!
I reckon the primary reason for having stacked armor, is for the first plate to deform/break/deflect the projectile, and let the following plates stop it/the fragments.
Given that the projectiles look more or less intact, i would rather have a solid plate, than 2 or more thinner plates of titanium. There is also a fairly large gap between the plates for the last SLAP round.
Anyways... Tungsten penetrators at high velocity is not easy to "catch"... if you wish to be alive afterwards.

Tip. When bolting target plates together. You should try schedule 8 bolts. They won’t stretch nearly as much, if any.
I think the bolts loosening will absorb a lot of the power.
