I have my 7th Pekingese, always totally loved them from the first when I was a young child. They are worth the time, and if you brush them each day, that takes care of the matting hair. It takes about a good 10 minutes, nothing more. She always enjoys it, and always looks good after. They are perfect as a best friend, a watchdog, and give so much back. They love their walks, playtime, is at night for mine, also has a favourite toy. I love this dog, great hair, good black mask, a real keeper. I would never breed and don't as I only want mine solely as pets, and I could never sell a pup. They need the right Owner, not someone who is lazy like so many people can be. (PS. I never let anyone use anything but scissors on my Peke for her feet, too many groomers can cut the pads, and it causes an infection).
She is beautiful and good natured as well. I love her ears. I do like 'Pekes' but there is a lot of work involved in keeping them matt free etc. She will have gorgeous puppies.

I feel so sorry for dogs with such short noses. They can't breathe properly and suffer all their lives. Breeding them should be for the purposes of improving their health, not perpetuating the look.
We have a champaign colored Peke and he is the best dog ever, great disposition, very intuitive when it comes to our mood. We have our groomer take him down quite a bit. We love our butterbean..

(both also rescued from a local shelter.) One is a sweetheart and will allow you to groom her and cut her nails but her sister is horrible and won't hold still, screaming like she is being murdered! I have a grooming table with the body and neck holders but she still manages to wiggle around and won't stand up. Cutting her nails takes two people. I trimmed her coat last spring to where it was about 2-3 inches long and she loved it. I haven't done it again because it was a two-day process to brush her out, bath her, dry her, brush her again before trimming her and cutting her nails. All in all, I would not give them up for anything. They are great family dogs and have wonderful personalities.

That poor animal with all that fur, bred for humans not for the comfort of the animal. She should be shaved if the owner/breeder can't keep her fur brushed and free of mats. Having mats is painful for the dog and so is dematting.
