Christina Costa: How gratitude rewires your brain | TED

  • When a psychologist who studies well-being ends up with a brain tumor, what happens when she puts her own research into practice? Christina Costa goes beyond the "fight" narrative of cancer -- or any formidable personal journey -- to highlight the brain benefits of an empowering alternative to fostering resilience in the face of unexpected challenges: gratitude.

I am being treated for my 4th cancer since 2011. I always thank the receptionists, the weigh-in nurse, the HaemOnc nurses, the techs, and the doctors who are just as Christina describes them: smart, caring, competent, humorous. I am not religious, but these folks are my angels. They have my undying trust, thanks, and GRATITUDE.

I grew up loving nature and eventually considered myself an environmentalist - it got exhausting when everyone around me always framed everything as a fight. Eventually I stopped putting myself around people like that and found those who framed things as solutions and challenges. They’re usually pretty quiet, and busy, literally finding solutions and implementing them! Thank you for sharing this view point - more people need to hear about it!

I taught high school and every Friday the first 15 minutes of class were spent on gratitude. In their notebooks they had a section for gratitude and they would write five things that occurred that week or that they felt that week, for which they were grateful. Then we went around the room and everyone shared one. I asked them to save their gratitude lists put them in their sock drawers and look at them again in 10 years. I hope that they did it.

I giggled a little when she said she was grateful for nurses who got the IVs in first try, I love how she managed to connect us with her experience and not only that recognize the lightness in those moments as well. Showing that she’s living and prospering not waiting to do so. So powerful and beautiful she even regarded all sides of feelings during moments like this or huge feelings. Totally a work of art :)

This is why it is so important to have empathetic health professionals, it is hard to feel gratitude when you feel like things are being done to you rather than feeling you are being cared for.

After some bad things happened in my life, I also had to teach myself gratitude in order to be able to move on, it's one of my main goals now to always see thee good in order to support myself. This should be applied everyday in every case, maybe also taught in school? I want a world full of this king of people!

"If your life is more simple, then you are able to experience it more fully and more happily. If your mind is not constantly caught up in striving after things or chasing romance or trying to acquire wealth and advantage, you can begin to experience gratitude.
    ...
This is a whole different way of being with life. It is being with life. Instead of racing through life trying to fulfill your wish list, you are now being with life."
A quote from *Joy and Gratitude* - a teaching from *The New Message from God*

Gratitude is a powerful force! I have spent the last several years focusing on all the great things going on in my life. (Daily) gratitude and thanksgiving has changed my life. I have spend at least 20 years of my life on depression medication. I no longer take these kinds of drugs. Life is precious and God is so faithful to help us move forward to a new and compelling future.

Thank you for a amazing positive teaching. I was healed by my Father in heaven after colon cancer st3.
What I can relate to is a positive attitude. Chemo was not easy but it was a process I had to go through and thinking about it now, it never felt part of me. I always went for chemo with a smile, enjoying the wonderful company of medical staff. I know it is not that I was in control but Jesus, my Healer was. All praise to Him. I will definitely start blowing a kiss to my brain, dayly❤

Thank you for sharing your journey to awareness and current practices of gratitude, Christina, and everyone commenting here.
I've been instilling more gratitude practices from the book The Magic by Rhonda Byrne in my days and nights as well. I'd like to share two from the book, especially for channeling the magic of gratitude to physical well-being: Heart Magic and Magical Health. Feel grateful deeply like it's radiating from every beat of your heart. Give thanks for every organ and body part for its function and what each and everyone of them allows you to do.
Thank you for another beautiful, healthy day! :)

A beautiful message. Thank you. I have personally expunged religion from my life, however, so as not to throw the baby out with the bath water, I regularly practice one exercise that has, over several decades now, become indispensable to me. I regularly meditate upon gratitude. Like in the lyrics of an old Crowded House song, which a dearly departed friend of mine introduced me to many years ago, I remind myself often that I will love this life, even though I may never know why. And I will -as best as I can hope to be able- try to be sure that my very last thought, upon my very last breath, before I leave this mystery I’ve no memory of having ever requested in the first place, is the simple essence of gratitude. Because the way I see it, if there truly is another realm beyond this mortal world wherein I should hope to meet a divine and benevolent creator who might yet allow me a second life hereafter, it seems only naturally incumbent upon me to have already expressed by then my sincerest gratitude for the first one. -Phill, Las Vegas
