      Thank you so much! I briefly touched upon what I wrote in my LOCI in this video. In my LOCI for new information, I talked about the summer internship I had obtained after applying to colleges and I highlighted some of the important votes and legislation that I helped to pass in my county-wide elected position. For the summer internship, I did not have this internship at the time of applying to colleges, so this was perfect to tell the colleges about. For the elected position, even though I had talked about it in my regular application, this was at the beginning of my term, so when it was April writing my LOCIs, my year-long term was almost over. I included this information so I could update the colleges on my experiences and what I had accomplished over the year. Definitely let me know if you have any other questions! Hope this helps!

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your kind words, it means a lot!! I think it depends on how you phrase the UCLA acceptance, so I would personally be on the side of not mentioning other colleges you were accepted into in your LOCI. If you said something like "I was accepted into UCLA, but Berkeley is my top choice" or like "I was accepted into UCLA, so you should accept me into Berkeley" - these do not come across well. Personally, since this is a LOCI for Berkeley, there is not really a reason to mention other colleges. You should be focused on showing Berkeley why you are a good candidate and why you want to attend Berkeley. Hope this helps!

    hi rachel! super helpful video omg! im currently writing mine for transfer waitlists and wanted to ask for your body paragraphs, how in depth did you go into for each thing you did? i started about 4-5 new things and am not sure if i should just focus on a few or all of them? any insight would be helpful!

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! Since you have 4-5 new things, if you have a 500 word limit, you may want to explain more in-depth 2-3 of them, and briefly explain the others. 500 words seems like a lot, but the limit creeps up so quickly haha! So maybe you pick the most important/influential activities you started and then connect/explain how these new activities relate to your interest in the specific college you're waitlisted for. And if there is a similar activity like this on the college campus, you can emphasize how you want to continue working/volunteering in the similar group in college. Hope this helps!

      @@su-tingtan2571 Yeah, you could introduce them at the beginning or end, like "since my previous application, I did x,y,z..." You could mention them again later but it depends how you would portray this. You probably don't have a lot of word count, so mentioning them once is probably good to get your point across!

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe I heard back in May from Berkeley, but I think this differ between colleges depending how long it takes for them to review applications and notify students of their updated decisions. See if your college allows you to send in supplemental materials. Some colleges may accept a LOCI, updated transcripts, and additional letters of recommendation. However, other colleges may only ask you to send a LOCI and nothing else, so follow whatever directions they give you! Hope this helps, good luck 🤗🤗

    Thank you so much for all of this helpful info! Are waitlist LOCI's reviewed by the regional admissions officer, or is admittance determined by a group of admissions officers in the university's admission committee?

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I think it would probably depend on your specific college, so you could call your specific college's admissions office to inquire! I would presume that the regional admissions officer and their team would review the LOCIs for their area, and then a larger admissions committee would commence where the team would discuss the regional officer's choices/compare the applicants across each location. So probably a mix of the two!

  • @natalieabigail6896

    Hi Rachel! For this application year, it looks like Berkeley has erased the option to submit the waitlist essay on their opt-in form. They didn't state explicitly that they aren't accepting any LOCIs, but is sending one going to benefit us in any way? If so, where do you suggest I submit my LOCI? They don't give out regional AOs email address, so I assume the general admissions office? Thanks in advance!

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it appears that Berkeley's LOCI policy changed this year. If you know your Regional Admissions Officer or High School Representative (your high school counselor might know this information), you could email the LOCI to them. If not, you could email the Dean of Admissions. Either way, the LOCI might not count for much in the admissions process, but it does not hurt to email!

  • @eleianamorris83

    What should I focus on in the LOCI if there haven’t been any updates in my grades or extracurriculars since? I’ve maintained good grades all year (resulting in a .3 GPA increase) but I don’t think this is significant enough to mention in the letter. Most clubs and sports have similarly been postponed due to COVID the past few months, and have only recently reopened. Volunteer opportunities have also been very limited as of recently. What should I do?

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eleiana! Do you mean a .3 or .03 increase? Personally, I would say a .3 GPA increase is a big deal (say if you went from a 3.4 to 3.7)! If the college allows you to submit an updated transcript, you can do so to highlight the good grades that you have maintained all year, despite the pandemic and transitioning to online classes. In your LOCI, you could write 1-2 sentences about how you have continued to take challenging courses while maintained a strong GPA which demonstrates that you are a hard worker (and you can mention other related qualities - basically to show the university what qualities you can bring to the college). If you do not have any updates on clubs/sports that you can write about in your LOCI, you could always focus your LOCI more on your personal values and characteristics and how they will prepare you/make you a good fit for the college you applied to. So you could mention some programs/classes/clubs the college offers that you would want to join because you are passionate about a certain topic. Additionally, if your college values students who are leaders, you could highlight your leadership activities and share what skills/values you have learned. Hope this helps!

    Hi Rachel! I just got waitlisted at Berkeley and I was wondering if choosing the FPF program as the pathway I'd choose if I got off the waitlist will give me a higher or lower chance at getting off the waitlist and accepted at Berkeley? Is FPF really competitive so it would make it harder for me to get in if I selected that option? Or do less students choose that option so it would give me a higher chance of getting off the waitlist? I want to do whatever I can to get off the wailist!! Thanks so much. :)

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you join the waitlist, does it ask you which pathway you would choose if accepted? (Like FPF, change maker...?) When I was waitlisted, we would just join the waitlist, and then once accepted to Berkeley, the acceptance letter then said we could choose our admission from a few different pathway options. Let me know and then I can better answer your question! ☺️🐻

      @rachel_lin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vishvamodi822 Hi Vishva! I couldn't find any explicit answer online to this question from Berkeley, but I am going to say yes it does affect your admissions chances. Since FPF is only open to College of Letters and Science incoming students, if you're L&S you would be eligible to be admitted off of the waitlist onto main campus or through an alternative pathway like the FPF program, so you would technically have two chances to get off the waitlist compared to just being admitted onto main campus. Good luck!

    Hi Rachel! My waitlist letter from northwestern was very cryptic in what to send and what not to send (at least to me). Can you help me decipher the line: “While we do not encourage the submission of additional materials, we do welcome any new academic information.” I know some kids who got off the waitlist last year that did send a LOR, LOCi, and updated academic info, so I plan on sending a loci and some academic info. Do you think this is how I should proceed?

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm that is tricky! I guess it depends on how the admissions office interprets what 'additional materials' and what 'academic information' mean. If they are accepting new academic information, is there a place to upload documents in your student portal? That could help indicate what kinds of documents they are looking for. They may interpret additional materials like not accepting additional long essays or letters of recommendation. For academic information, it could mean they just want updates on grades, but I also could see academic information encompassing updates on extracurricular activities. To double check though, you should try calling the admissions office to clarify what they mean by that phrase! I think better safe in clarifying rather than sending information that they will not accept.

    Hi Rachel thank you so much for making this helpful video. I am put on Berkeley's waiting list. And what a coincidence I’ve also applied for the major of legal studies. I have a question. Since Berkeley's opt-in form already requires us to submit an additional supplementary essay of 500 words, can I still send a Loci email to Berkeley? I plan to provide the links to documentaries I've created and a rewarded academic papers (I mentioned them in my original application, but the admissions officer didn't get a chance to see exactly what they look like). I have asked many people. Some say it is beneficial, while others think this would annoy the admissions officer and negatively affect my application. Now I'm really struggling. Can you give me some advice? Thank you again for sharing your experiences and advice with us.

    • @rachel_lin
      @rachel_lin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alina, thank you so much for watching! Congrats on your documentary and academic paper achievements! For Berkeley, the 500 word essay is synonymous with LOCI, so they are the same essay. Hmm with links, I do wonder how that would come across to an admissions officer reading your application - because if they receive your essay in a PDF form, they probably do not click on links or copy/paste your link into a browser to view. Thus, I am thinking these documentary video links and links to entire research papers may not get looked at. You should call the Berkeley Admissions Office to ask about your question and if/how you could include this material (admissions.berkeley.edu/contact-us). If they say they will not look at your documentary or research paper supplemental materials, you will have to try your best to describe these achievements in your LOCI. Hope this helps, let me know if you had any other questions!
