Hi Rachel.. Nice video. What happens as a Freshman, I am not able to get any courses suppose to be completed lets say in Fall? I mean if we are suppose to complete three courses in Fall and we are not able to enroll in those, can we enroll in courses that fall in Winter? Does the order of courses matter? for eg. at 11:37th minute, you said we can enroll in course 102 before 101. But what if in order to complete 102, we should have knowledge of course 101?
Thank you! For what I talk about at 11:37, this is for Discussion Sections. So each discussion section might have a number associated with it, like 101 or 102, but these are just numbers to distinguish each section, not class codes. But for other classes that are supposed to be taken in a sequential order, then yes, you would need knowledge of the earlier class material in order to build upon those subjects in the higher up courses (usually for classes like this, they will list prerequisite courses that you should/or have to take before signing up for this class). If you aren't able to get some of the courses you want in the fall, you could enroll in them a different semester/quarter. Usually for classes/majors, it's not that they give you only 3 classes that you must take in the Fall, but they will give you a list that you have to take - so then you'd choose which classes you can take based on which ones you are able to sign up for. Hope this helps!
86 degrees in Phoenix this morning! Highs today 104 but check the end of our 10 day forecast! Highs by late weeks could dip to the 90s on consecutive days and this is unusual to say the least because our normal high is 106 but I better enjoy the cooler weather with chances of thunderstorms later this week!
Yeah I think they have multiple move in days now to spread out the amount of people around. There used to be one big move in day and then students who couldn’t make it could move in afterwards. 🧳
Hello Rachel! I am currently on the waitlist for Math 16A and enrolled in Math 1A. I was not sure which math class would be better for me so I signed up for both just in case. Do you recommend I attend the lecture for Math 16A in the first couple of weeks as well?
Yeah, you definitely could attend both classes the first few weeks of school! If you get off of the waitlist for Math 16A or if they open new discussion sections that you can switch into to get fully enrolled, then you have the option of which class you want to stay in. Depending on the exam schedule, you may have the first midterm in each of the classes before the Add/Drop deadline, so that could be a factor in your decision of which class to stay in - although studying for an entirely extra class would be a lot of work. You can also see the difficulty of each of the classes through the homework assignments and quizzes over the first few weeks of school! Math 1A is known to be harder than 16A, so it depends on how confident you are in your math skills to determine which class you want to stay in. It also depends on what your intended major is and if the major accepts both 16A and 1A to fulfill pre-reqs! This site has some information about choosing 16A or 1A - math.berkeley.edu/courses/choosing-courses.
Thanks for watching! Incoming students don't have a Phase 2 this enrollment, but every enrollment after, you will go back to the regular Phase 1 and Phase 2. Basically Phase 1 and Phase 2 have different enrollment limits, so regularly, you can only sign up for 13.5 units during Phase 1. Having two separate phases allows for some more equity in class registration, because the students who get better Phase 1 times can really only sign up for 3 classes rather than signing up for all of their classes first, leaving everyone else with no classes. I explain the differences between Phase 1 and 2 more in-depth in this video: th-cam.com/video/FhyBgDWIaEg/w-d-xo.html. This first enrollment is harder for transfer students because you are trying to get into classes that may already be full because the continuing students have already signed up. Since you are waitlisted for 2 classes, if you aren't high up on those waitlists or on the discussion section waitlists, then you should find some potential backup classes that are open right now to sign up for during the Adjustment Period. Hope this helps!
Hi! This video is a year old so I hope you see this, but I had a question about enrollment. So I got waitlisted for every class I wanted (chem 1a, chem 1al, math 32, etc.) My ques are like 72 and 79, so I have like zero hope. But my discussion sections are really packed like 15/15 waitlist, so I was wondering if I can enroll in these classes again with a diff section so I can move up faster? Or do I keep it as is?
Hi Christopher! Yeah, if you find any discussion sections that are not full 15/15, but maybe you could be like 3/15 or something, you may consider switching into those discussion waitlists. The class fills up based on the discussion section, so if you are 72 on the class waitlist, that number does not really mean anything because you need people in the discussion section you've signed up for to drop. So less popular discussion sections like 8 AM might have shorter waitlists, so your chances of getting into the class are higher if you only need 3 people to drop compared to a discussion section where you are 15/15. Hope this helps, good luck!
@@rachel_lin omg thank you so much I didn't know that! Also, I'm sorry for bothering you more, but say If I already enrolled in the classes and I'm currently waitlisted for them, can I just use class search and enroll again? So I can redo the discussion sections because it doesn't give me an option to alter the sections on view my classes.
@@christopherrocha7963 No problem, happy to help! On your Cal Central My Academics tab, where it shows your classes and Phase 1 area, you should have a SWAP feature. Swap should allow you to switch discussion sections while maintaining your 72 place on the class waitlist. Versus if you remove yourself from the class then re-enroll in a new discussion section, you would be last on the class waitlist, which doesn't necessarily matter since the class fills up by discussion, but say when you remove yourself all the discussion sections become full in the time it takes you to re-enroll, then you've lost your spot altogether, so swapping is safer.
@@rachel_lin Thank you so much for taking the time of your day to help me, I literally have no clue what I'm doing at times because I'm a first gen student and have like no knowledge of how anything works. so thanks!
hi! i know this video is talking about class waitlists at berkeley but i had a question about the transfer admission waitlist. emails went out today rejecting people who were in the transfer waitlist, but i received a different email saying that they were still considering people from the waitlist till mid august. it also said to opt in to potentially be offered spring admission for jan 2022. my question is do you think this means that i will be offered admission for the spring soon? or are my chances low because i'm technically still on the waitlist? if you know anything please let me know, thanks!
Hmm great question! I think they have this Jan 2022 waitlist as a way to fill seats depending on the number of students who graduate this fall or decide to take a gap semester in the spring etc. So I think gaining admission really depends on the number of students who do decide not to return to campus in the spring - whether through graduation or sometimes people take the semester off to do internships. From working in the hiring office for the Resident Assistants at Berkeley, I would say being invited to this second waitlist is a good sign as they probably estimate numbers year to year so they know how many seats typically open up between fall and spring and they like your application to invite you to this waitlist rather than releasing you from the waitlist! Although I have never worked in admissions, so I can't really give you an answer of 100% what they are thinking, but these are just my thoughts. Good luck!
@@rachel_lin thank you so much for your response. in the email it said that they will let me know in the next 2 weeks, so here’s to hoping i get accepted !!!!
Keep checking Cal Central daily! For those big intro classes, they may randomly open up entire new discussion sections. Then if you see that, sign up for the new discussion and that would enroll you in the class! For example, Math 1B just opened new discussion sections last Friday that weren’t on the website when Phase 1 happened. But if you keep checking through August when school starts and there are no open spaces, then you would have to wait until next semester to register!
Yes, you theoretically could attend the lectures of a class you aren't enrolled in if the lecture is a big one. Like a class with 1000 students in it, they wouldn't know, but smaller classes it might not work. You could also "audit" a class where you are "enrolled" in it, but you aren't taking the class for credit or a grade. That would be the more official way of attending classes you are interested in!
It depends! You would get into the class officially if a student in the discussion section you're on the waitlist for drops the class. So even though you are number 1 on the waitlist, technically the 4th person on the waitlist could get into the class before you if they picked a discussion section where a person drops from. If your class is just a lecture with no discussion, then you would just need someone to drop the main class then you would get in - a chronological waitlist. Hope that helps!
@@ヤイレニス I hope you can get into the class! There’s still 2 months until January so potentially someone could drop the class between now and the start of next semester! ☺️
There are so many issues with this education system. Why colleges dont have same system like High School where all classes are scheduled as per Majors selected..
Haha it would make things simpler if everything was set for you! But having the freedom to try new subjects/classes in college can help you discover your interests if there's some field offered in college that you've never heard of or your HS didn't offer classes in!
