I just got a TLM 103 and loving putting it through its paces. I don't have an Austrian Audio OC818 to compare it to but I am a very happy Neumann customer right now.
103 sounds more intimate. Bit more colored in a good way. OC818 sounds more like how I would expect you to sound. Honestly, unless you are looking in specifically changing the pickup patterns, either would be equally fine to me.
For the price tag, both are great mics....TLM has a little more head room in the lows and OC has a little "highs" presence.... TLM, OC and AKG 414 XLII are almost similar.... you can do your job with no problems at all... I own the 414s for many years... it's a Swiss knife for all circumstances... and I think, for the "flexibility" of OC818, it's a better option for all recording circumstances.... for the price, all are great... no need to spend more money for the mic (I own Neumann 149 tube too, 4.800 euros mic)... invest the rest of money to a real good pre-amplifier and compressor ;-) .... Finally, the ex AKG engineers in Austrian Audio made great job.... Cudos!!
OC818 is the at the Moment the King of versital Microphones. The Comparison is a classics since Microphone History its the Austrian C12 Capsule Desing vs. M7 Germann Capsule Design. There is a saying in Sounndengineer industtry. There is always one best mic for one thing but the second best is always a 414 since 3 Years its the OC818.
on top of that if we put into perspective that the masterminds behind the austrain audio are the old eng. from akg we can agree that again is neumann germany vs akg austria .....
The austrian can take some dialing in to match the punch of the 103 and then after it'll give you the versatility that comes with it...That tlm is simply pure mic that you pay for...without the frills and the unmixed sound attest to that. I'd just have the two of them!! lol...continue pushing you'll be approaching 100k subs soon!! Happy to see it happening!!
TLM has better noise rejection, and captured more of the dry vocal rather than the space that you were in, which resulted in a cleaner sounding mixed vocal.
Cool comparison, TLM sounds better on your voice when processed. I would like to know how did you eq your voice with the OC818? Do both mics use the same eq and compression? OC818 sounds brighter and I would reduce the high frequencies for the mix. Just my personal preference 👍
As someone pointed out, that's the wrong polar pattern response graph for the 103, it has 4-5dB of lift in the top end starting right around the vocal presence range so can sound quite brittle on the top end with certain instruments and sibilant voices but more importantly you made no mention of the versatility of the 818 in terms of its two diaphragms, customisable polar pattern and the ability to play with the polar response AFTER recording by selecting the pickup shape in five preset bands across the spectrum. This alone makes it better value than the Neumann. Also Bluetooth dongle connectivity for pattern changing remotely. No competition if you ask me. Which you didn't.
The tlm 103 does get a bit brittle ,,, but so will the 818 due to its warmth in the low end, warm mics typically cause a shrill sound in the high mids, at4050s are like that too, and well same as the Aston spirit, the tlm 103 would of been a really great mic if they some how corrected the highs
Great vid as always Ed! I want to ask something. What fps do you shoot/export at? It seems like 30 or even below that, this way the vids feel kinda "laggy" and choppy, maybe if you could shoot in 50 or 60fps, it would be much more smoother, thus making the videos themselves more enjoyable. :D
Hey nice job! Not to be critical but the frequency response graph you showed was not for the TLM103, as it has a more pronounced presence boost. You showed the response for a KM184, one Neumanns small diaphragm condensers.
Great singing full of feeling and i like the song too. :) Thnks for these videos, helping me out a lot. I’m kind of thinking of a wa251 but I’d like omething with a bit more of a Neumann sound in the future
Can you compare the Focusrite Scarlett Solo vs. the Universal Audio Apollo Twin Audio Interface using specifically the Neumann TLM 103 microphone? Your videos are the only comparison videos I prefer to watch. It would help out SO much!
@@ThisHandleIsInteresting really? Is it a drastic difference? Because I want to get the 103 but I won’t yet if it’ll only be better with a more expensive interface.
@@shakibavideos I’m sure you’ve done whatever you’ve done and this is no longer relevant a year later, but even still, I want to address it… There will always be better. Once you have a Focusrite, Apollo will be better. Once you have an Apollo, you’ll need stand-alone preamps. Then standalone compressors. Then your preamps need an upgrade. Don’t wait to buy a good mic until you have a Neve console; buy a good mic when the mic is the limiting factor, and then make some music. That’s all you can do. Better is relative to where you are and only matters when what you have is holding you back
@@andrewnibbi Hi, thank you for replying. Since my comment, I’ve been posting still (with my Focusrite) and I appreciate the advice. I think I needed to hear it :)
Holy cow I almost feel the OC818 beats the Neumann’s top end in terms of smoothness.. am I crazy anybody else hearing more smoothness on the top end and a more controlled body, too? Also, dynamics & transients seems to be handled better through the 818 (granted it’s a ceramic capsule)..
Why did you do 2 drastically different mixes on the mics? Different processing, makes super hard to tell how it sounds. Your processing on the 818 had more saturation for some reason almost sounded harsh, and was a lot wetter too… I can’t judge this

Austrian Audio OC818 for me. Just sounds way above its price.

Austrian have it soul. Good mickrophone!!!
103 definitely gives that warmth

Cant beat the Neumann TLM 103! Been here since 7k subs, and the quality of your vids keep improving!
Thank you so much for watching!! 🙏🏻
Austrian sounds polished!

the 103 had more focused bass density on your voice and preamp and convertor, the 87 would be great on you
oc818 is much much better, your voice is alive, but tlm 103 sounds dead. thank you for your comparision video.

You may be thinking of shutter speed. Movies are filmed at 24fps
For this track and vocalist the 818 sounds better, cleaner, more modern
I have both. I prefer the OC818.
TLM103 sounded better little warmer but still very detailed. The voice had more authority.
Advance congratulations for 53k subs
Thank you!

Yea lol def not the right graph that presence boost aint bad but its not the bold boost tlm 103 has

hello Edward, would you rather use 540s or oc818 for vocals in terms of detail, warmth and ease on mixing?
Both are really good. For me the detail of the OC818 is on another level compared to the 540s. Both are warm sounding though.

Hi there Viva South Africa !! Question what preamp would you recommend with the TLM 103 / or Apollo unison is enough ?

The TLM doesn’t sound as bright as the 818 and it sounds plosive. 💯
103 for the win here!
Did you just plug it directly in your focusrite?
sometimes I see a vid like this and wonder if the algorithm is listening to my dreams

Thank god you played the RAW versions.
Yeah totally. Way more delay and reverb, what is the point of the comparison?!
Oc 818 ❤
2:12 this is not the plot of the TLM103, but the KM184!
tlm 103 no doubts
I’d trade my tlm to get my OC back😭
Second to Like 😊😊.❤️❤️❤️🇳🇬🇳🇬
still hoping my Idol.. to have a gift from you , for my Covers thank you ❤️
Maybe next time you can ask a singer to join in for the test?
103 sounds lumpy.
Best description of a microphone of all time.
Never, never sing, dude
i think he has nice voice
He just shake his head and yodel I don’t know who told him to sing lol
@@ripdocholiday9650he doesn’t yodel, he just sings in cursive 😬
He sings better now (video is two years)
What are you talking about he sings on pitch and with modulation and feeling.
Hi fidelity recording of a thumbs down vocalist
You seem nice
