  • This week on Tony's Top 5, in addition to Tony's Top 5 Salmon Crank Baits, you get a look behind the curtain to what we call failed shows. There are literally hours of video taken that sometimes never even make it onto a computer for editing. On 9.5.17 The Spot on Fishing crew attempted to capture a Salmon episode, and failed. We used SOME of the footage from that day to background this Top 5 List. We also included a highlight from our Spoon Fed Episode from a few years back. Enjoy, and let us know how I did choosing the Top 5. Here is the link to the Spoon Fed Salmon episode.

    None of my reef runners work right… they don’t dive and keep going off to one side

    Tony, Trying to get my kids excited about fishing. I've been out on the lake with no success. Any suggestions close to Chicago?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fernando Garcia If you are looking for Salmon, Burnham Harbor and Diversey are both loaded with Kings right now.
      Other good opportunities for the kids would be some of the forest preserve lakes of Cook Co. Busee, Tampier, even Wolf Lake would give them a good shot at panfish under a slip bobber. Bass fishing can be tough some days at those lakes but it can be awesome some days too. 3/16oz skirted jig with tiny paca chunk trailer would be a good option for the bass. Also straight Texas rig craw with 1/8oz tungsten bullet weigh will get the job done too. If you prefer to throw more moving baits for bass, its tough to beat a Chatterbait right now.
      Hope that helps you out a bit. Good luck fishing. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!

    I have used and had success on every crank mentioned except for reef runner. What is most common size used in reef runner?

    Thanks Tony, do you leave the treble hooks the lures come in? Or change it to single hook and if so which hooks would you recommend l. Thanks

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      With the crankbaits, we always leave the trebles on. The only ones we tend to switch for a better quality hook is on the Reef Runner. Gamakatsu treble hooks work well. The spoons is where some guys prefer a single hook instead of a treble hook. We’ve never noticed an issue with it though and we run the treble hooks that come on the spoons. Thanks for watching and thanks for writing in!

    Where they usually bites? Near shore or farther? Which of those 5 lures fly better?aerodynamics

      Evaldas Blauzdys I've caught Kings at all points of the retrieve. They can be anywhere. The J-13 and the Hot n Tot are the most susceptible to being caught in the breeze. All the others throw very well.

    When do you decide to go away from the spoons and put in a crank bait or do you switch between them until you find the bite ?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      michael Janas That is a great question! I won’t pick up a crankbait till later in the Fall run. When those fish are first coming in, a spoon is all you need when fishing from shore. Once those fish have been up shallow for a few days or even longer and have not yet entered the harbors or are first going in the harbors, that’s when I like to throw a crankbait. You may still catch one here and there on a spoon but the cranks give us that extra vibration and noise to trigger a reaction strike from a King in the Fall. Thanks so much for watching and thanks for writing in!

    Would this work in a river say about 30 feet deep at max?

    Ive never fished Lake Michigan, looks like a blast! Are most of the salmon still in deep? When is the salmon run typically at its peak?Is there parking near the harbor?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Omar Florian Salmon fishing is an absolute blast. They fight hard, long power runs, some jumps...nothing like it! The 4 year old Kings are coming in to spawn now. After spawning they will die. Short life cycle. Usually the first full moon in the first part of Sep will usually get some kings to start coming in. If the full moon is late Aug and the water temps are cool enough we will see them up shallow then. The peak of the run will be coming up. I'd say no later then the end end Sep. After that we switch over to fishing spawn to catch the Kings. Montrose, Belmont, Diversey, Burnham and Jackson Park all have good parking at those harbors.

      Can you please tell me if I can get my power wheelchair to any of these locations to try fishing these beauties? Thanks!

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bobfishnut There are ramps lake side at Diversey Harbor. Directly behind where we set up to film when we are there is the ramps. At Burnham it would be easier access inside the harbor. Montrose also does offer a ramp lake side if I remember correctly. The best bites have been at Diversey and Burnham harbor though. Good luck and let us know how you do!

      Spot on Fishing Thank you! Looking for a 8' pole and a few baits you recommended and I'm set for this weekend. Colder temps coming might help the bite! I bet these last few days were brutal on the bite. Going to try Diversey maybe Thursday and another Friday or Saturday. Will post how I do. I'll probably lose a lure because I have no help yet to net. It'll still be fun! :)

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bobfishnut You are very right. The warm temps and the east and southeast winds we had really shut the bite down. With some west and northwest winds in the forcast and the cooler temps we should see the action pick back up. Good luck out there and please let us know how you do. Thanks and good luck!

    I've never gone fishing for salmon at lake Michigan, do I need to get a trout stamp of some sort to fish for salmon?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ed Estrella Yes, to fish for any salmon or trout in Lake MI, you will need the Great Lakes Stamp added to your fishing license.

    If anyone comes across a J-13 in the clown color, grab it. No idea why Rapala discontinued it, but it was one of my best producers.

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shaun Vergara Oh man! You’re right, Rapala isn’t making the J-13 in Clown. They’re not making it in any of the jointed sizes! That’s crazy! Clown has always been a very popular color too. I’m shocked they discontinued it. Great call out. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching.

    Nothing beats Racine at night. Let us know next time you go, would love to say hello and cast a few. Enjoy your vids, brother. Take care.

      Sir Bass Thumb LOVE Racine! That is a BLAST! One night in Racine can make it tough to fish Chicago! It is amazing how much bigger the kings are up there too! Sometimes the 2 plus hour ride for me can make it hard to fish Racine as much as I'd like too. Usually the city can scratch my king itch...but man, Racine is something else!

    Great video. Sorry about losing that king.
    Never been salmon fishing but I am heading up to Sturgeon bay this weekend to give it a try. Really appreciate you sharing these top 5 lists, I will definitely be using some of them this weekend.

      61fishing Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! Unfortunately you can't land them all. Losing that fish is a good reminder to always check your line for frays or nicks. Kings will take advantage of that every time. Good luck fishing up North. Let us know how you do.
