      Jon Boat Fishing Adventures Thank you so much for that wonderful compliment. When we started Spot On Fishing, 4 or 5 years ago, our main goal was education about the great fishing opportunities around Chicagoland and how to properly fish them so that all anglers can be successful. I’ve always said, it’s fun to just go fishing but it’s even more fun when you catch fish. That was our mission from day one, was to help more anglers be successful on the water. Sincerely, thank you for the compliment and thank you so much for watching our shows.

    Thanks for all the useful info! Can't wait to get out there this year! Can you specify the how long this run lasts? Also, from your experience, what hours are best? Morning, evenings?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      fedeuma Thank you so much! We are very happy to hear you enjoyed it. It’s hard to say how long the run will last. We started seeing Kings around the new moon phase the last weekend of Aug. this year. The full moon is this coming weekend, Sep 14 I believe. So within that week after the full moon all the Kings we will see in this run should be in. We may have 1 more week after that where they’ll still hit Spoons and Crankbaits, but having spawn by then will really help to keep you catching fish. It will transition into a spawn bite shortly after that. So there isn’t too much time to get in on the action. As far as time of day, as we said in this show, the moon phase will tell you the best times. Those peak activity windows are the best times. Early mornings and the evening into the dark will also be a good time. But definitely watch the moon phase and see what time that peak window is in! Even if it’s 2:30 in the afternoon, you’ll catch em’! Good luck and let us know how you do.

    Hey Tony, thank you for the super informative video! Just doing some research to get ready to get back out there this year, when do you think the season will "start" this year? As of today (8/4/2020) the water temp is at 66 around Chicago. Do you think theres a chance of hooking into a King or Coho around now? Cheers and tight lines!

    Another awesome video Tony. Also had a question, when throwing these spoons how fast are you retrieving them? I went the other day for the first time ever salmon fishing. I was watching those around me to see how others were reeling and it seemed some were reeling fast and others slow. I seen one of your other videos talking about doing the count and reeling back.

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D Mc Thanks for the compliment! Very happy to hear you enjoyed the show. The correct answer on how fast we reel can honestly vary from day to day or even hour to hour. Counting the spoon down to various levels in the water column as well as the speed of the retrieve depends on the day. Unfortunately there’s no general rule of thumb as far as the level or speed to start at. It’s a lot of on the water trial and error. Also sometimes we do a stop and go retrieve, letting the spoon settle for a few seconds before starting to crank again. A good rule of thumb is starting low and slow and then working you way up in the water column while trying different speeds. In general, slow to a moderate retrieve will usually score some hits from the Kings. It isn’t often we catch them moving fast. But there has been occasions where it’s worked. Thanks so much for watching. Hope that helps you out. Wish I could give you a definite answer. It’s just an answer that only the Kings can give you on that particular time you’re on the water.

    Good video lot of info, I do have a question tho, a 7 footer St. Croix Mojo Inshore Spinning Rod heavy with a fast action would be okay?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gio c it’s not ideal because the tip is too stiff. You’d almost be better off with a 7’ Bass Spinning MH rod. Salmon rods are very unique. A softer tip with a good amount of backbone. Because of the mouth structure of the Salmon, we need the shock absorption of that tip to keep our hooks from ripping out when the Kings run, twist and jump. Those rods also have the backbone to turn those fish away from snags, piers and to the net.

    I want to catch my first salmon this month! What’s the best Chicago harbor and what bait/lures do you recommended for a beginner?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, hopefully we’ll see more Coho’s come close to shore this month. It is only April 11th as of this writing, so we should see better water temps before the month is over. Currently in Chicago water temps rage from 44 to 46 degrees. Some anglers are getting one here and one there on the Powerlines. Once water temps hit 50-53 degrees it gets going really good. Spoons like the KO Wobbler, Little Cleo and Krocodile all work well. Blue/Silver, Green/Silver and Gold/Orange all produce in the 3/4oz size. Crankbaits, we throw Storm Wiggle Warts and Hot N’ Tots, Rapala Jointed Shad Raps and Berkeley Flicker Shads. Reds, firetiger, and blue/silver are great color choices. You can also float some shrimp about 3 - 4 feet down. Often we’ll have a float out with a shrimp as we are casting Spoons and Crankbaits with our other rod. By far, our favorite harbor is Diversey. Hopefully in the next week or two things will get going down town. Good luck! Thanks for watching!

    Could i run straight braid? Am i only using leader for abbrasion resistance because of the teeth on chinooks? I prefer the slow sink rate when fishing inside the harbor so would rather not use leader if i can get away with it.

    Is the Adler planetarium good in June because I want to know if it is worth my time to fish there for kings or go somewhere else

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruce Nemecek Well...currently water temps are between 58 and 60 degrees in the city. If we should get some west winds in and drop that water temp a bit, that would be a good area. There is a chance before sunrise they may push some alewives up and feed...but so many factors have to happen for that. 55 degrees is a better suited water temp to see that happen, with the way this weather has been lately, who knows, we might get a shot. I remember about 7 or 8 years ago we had a lot of west winds in June and there were a lot of Kings caught by the Planetarium.

    Nice video! I bass fish a lot so I'm currently using a 7'3 Lews mach 2 baitcasting combo. Reel gear ratio is 7:5:1. I know I should probably get a salmon rod but is this still good enough though because at the moment distance and hooking is not a problem because I can't ever seem to get a strike. Currently I'm using 3/4 little cleo spoons and strike king fire tiger lipless crankbaits with no luck.

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      torment The Reel is way too fast of a gear ratio. Slow is the way to go for Kings. That’s why we run spinning reels for them or if we do use a salmon baitcast rod and reel, the reel is a 5.1:1 or a 4.7:1. With those high speed reels, aside from picking up line to fast they do not have the power for fighting big kings. The high speed reels have smaller gears so that they turn quickly but under any torque will slip. The low speed reels have deep cut gears, allowing for slower rotation and no slippage, which gives you more power. Definitely try throwing some 3/4oz KO Wobblers and the Storm Mag Wart. Something about those two baits, they seem to produce when nothing else will. Thanks so much for watching! Give those baits a try with a lower gear ratio reel. You’ll be in good shape then for a King. Fighting them is like fighting a Mac Truck! You’ll be glad you got a different set up for fighting them.

    • @torment6369
      @torment6369 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spot on Fishing Thank you for the help and replying. I started salmon fishing recently so I really have no idea what I'm doing. I've always thought fast was the way to go so they wouldn't get a good look at your bait and realize that it was a fake. Yikes, I got to get me a slower ratio reel then. Won't be able to get a slower reel too soon so I guess I'll try slowing my retrieve until then since that's all I got.

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      torment You’re welcome. Always happy to help. With the Kings, they aren’t there to eat, they’re up to spawn and die afterwards. Most times moving slower and keeping it in their faces longer helps to trigger those aggression strikes from them. That’s all we are trying to do with the Kings is aggravate them into striking since they are not feeding. Good luck fishing! The salmon run should get pretty good by next week.

    i just got a new reel for salmon but i don't have enough money for a salmon rod will i be ok if use my 6ft 8in bass rod? I live north side Chicago and I want to get into Salmon fishing. I can literally bike ride to Montrose harbor and im just about to get one of those extra long fishing nets.

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dev odden if that’s all you have, it’s worth a shot as long as the rod can handle throwing a 3/4oz bait. If the rod is not rated to throw that heavy of a bait, you can break the rod casting it. The salmon rods are designed to handle those types of baits and have a softer tip to help keep the fish hooked but also the backbone to turn the fish when we need to. If you have a 7 or a 7’6 MH bass rod that would be better then the 6’8. Keep an eye out on Facebook Market Place or eBay and Amazon, sometimes you’ll see a used rod come up at a great price. Good luck and maybe we’ll see you this Fall fishing for Kings!

      Jeff Farnsworth We keep them alive. If we were bouncing around more in a river setting, like the Root River in WI, we would bleed them out. In the lake we’ve had no issues with leaving them in the water as is. We’ve had no issues where the meet was tainted. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!

    • @robertstreams4362
      @robertstreams4362 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spot on Fishing your welcome and I haven't been out yet myself but I've heard of some being caught off the piers here (Olcott) in the past couple weeks....Looking forward to getting out myself asap....Just a comment towards snagging which is not legal at all in NY some people (including myself at times) do what is referred to as tightlining...Bascilly and egg sac or roe hooked to a single hook with a slip weight and a treble hook tied up the line a bit...salmon swim with thier mouths open and the line gets caught in thier mouth and slides up to the treble hook and into the corner of thier mouth....Its not as exciting as a king nailing a spoon but effective....I don't keep any salmon from lake Ontario as its advised not to eat them...

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Streams That is a great call out on the spawn. Thanks for sharing! We are hoping to get back out for some Kings tomorrow. We have some major storms that are supposed to hit this evening and over night. We’ll see, the weathermen haven’t been the best around here lately, LOL. So do they say not to eat the Salmon out of Ontario due to a mercury level issue? For Lake Michigan they advise not too eat too much or too many meals of the Kings too close together. The Lake Trout is where it could get a little more dicey on Lake Michigan, especially the older and bigger Lakers.

    • @robertstreams4362
      @robertstreams4362 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spot on Fishing yeah they say I do believe not to eat them at all...a lot of people still do of course...I have myself but prefer steelhead/rainbow to eat....The salmon are usually not all that tasteful by the time they stage or come up the tributaries....Much better when caught deeper and still nice and silver....We have cold fronts coming in as well and should bring them in closer....Piers will be crowded soon enough....Lol

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Streams I do agree, early on in the run when they first come up lake side and are still chrome is when they taste the best. Or if caught on a charter during the spring and summer. Once they turn bronze, I have a couple of buddies who smoke them and they don’t seem to mind it. I love eating Steelhead too. Although my favorite is the Coho. Do you think a 7’5 medium heavy rod is good?

    • @MichiganPowersports
      @MichiganPowersports 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on where you are fishing from. Pier or bank? Get a 10ft. On a boat 7.5ft is manageable.

      JAMES RASHID it’s fairly decent there early on in the run. It may not be the most consistent area, but early on in the run (right now) when we’ve had west winds for a couple of days it is well worth spending and hour or two around there.

    What big fish can I catch this July?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there, sorry for the late reply.
      July on Lake Michigan from shore is all about the Smallmouth Bass. Tube jigs, drop shot rig and the ned rig will catch them. Also there are some MONSTER carp in the harbors all summer long. A size 2 or 4 octopus hook with a split shot about 2 feet from the hook, is the rig and we use whole kernel sweet corn for bait. Throw a couple handfuls of the corn out where you’ll be fishing as a chum for the Carp and keep your rig in the chum line, on the bottom and just wait.
      Sadly the big Kings, Lake Trout and Steelhead are all back out in the deep water, miles and miles off shore. Late August/Early September, the 4 year old Kings will return.
      Thanks so much for watching!

    Any chance of Trading a fishing trip to Florida fishing for Snook, red, and trout and Tarpon for a week of fishing for Kings in Chicago? My wife's parents live about 10 minutes from Midway so I have lodging there in the city. I just need to hook up with somebody who can help fast-track me to some Kings

    What size reel do you use for king salmon?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anthony schofield with Daiwa or Shimano a 4000 size spinning reel is perfect. For a Pflueger or Abu Garcia it would be a size 40 spinning reel.

    Hey tony I’ve been fishing montrose harbor every weekend on the inlet from 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM and I always see people around me catching salmon but I can’t seem to get one it’s also been slowing down there every weekend any tips?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Archie Points Fish those other Harbors mentioned in this show. Try some other spots at Montrose as well, that we talk about in this show. With the various weather systems we’ve had the fishing is going to vary. Especially when we’ve had the east winds. Like we talk about in this show, water temps, moon phase and wind direction are huge factors. Don’t give up, the best is yet to come. Thanks so much for watching! We appreciate it!

      What place do u recommend for this Saturday in the morning.... where would you go?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Archie Points Northeast winds at 15-25mph forecasted for Saturday. It’ll be very tough. Water will be churned up and those east winds push the warm water back in. Probably stay at Montrose and float spawn inside the harbor or head to Diversey and float Spawn inside there. Lake side will be pretty crazy with the winds on Saturday if they come to be true. It would be pointless and impossible to try Fishing lakeside under those conditions.

      Where in the harbor do you recommend I fish spawn? I’ve seen a lot of people last week fishing right near the bait shop in the back of the harbor also I’m using a lamiglass x-11 lx86ms rod which is a float/spinner/drift rod 8’6 fast action rod with a pfleuger president 40b reel and 20 pound power pro braided line will this work for spawn fishing or do I need to change something such as the leader like you mentioned in the video?

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Archie Points At 26:02 we break down the harbors in this show and where the best spots to fish inside (as well as outside) are, at Montrose, Diversey and Burnham. This way you can see our best recommendations on location at these spots. For spawn we always run mono. 8lb is fine. If the water was gin clear at times we may have to run 6lb cause they will get line shy. However I would only drop down to 6lb if you had a traditional spawn rod. It wouldn’t work well with standard salmon rods. You could try the braid with an 8lb mono leader tied in for the spawn. Fluorocarbon will tend to weigh the spawn down and we won’t get a natural drift. I’d be nervous though with Braid and Spawn. With the smaller single hook and no stretch to the braid it makes it a lot easier to accidentally pull that hook out while fighting the King.

      John Norman Thanks so much for the offer. I wish I had more time to be at the harbors more often. Between filming Spot On Fishing, running Muskie Attacker Tackle Co. and fishing tournaments it doesn’t leave much free time. Here is a couple other shows that will help you out that we’ve filmed over the years. Our first Salmon Show, from our first season, six years ago (wow 6 years? Time flys) th-cam.com/video/_VvL89EE2gk/w-d-xo.html This Show really breaks down using a lot of the things we talked about in the show you saw here. Another good one that we produced a few years back is Spoon Fed Kings th-cam.com/video/bwf5SAFMhfo/w-d-xo.html in this one we show how important a spoon fished properly is in our arsenal of salmon baits. Good luck to you this Fall. If you ever have questions, don’t hesitate to ask, we’re always happy to help. I’m sure you’ll see us down at the lake front soon! Thanks for watching!

      Steven I’d spent more time looking at water temps and making sure your gear is in order. Moon phases and fall Salmon fishing is much to do about nothing. Get cold water in the harbors and you will catch fish regardless what the moon is doing. Besides the last 7 days we were absolutely killing them in Kenosha and Racine since the last week of August

    • @tonysspotonfishing
      @tonysspotonfishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frankie J Over the boarder is a much different (and so much easier) scenario. Our schedule just hasn’t allowed us to get up to Racine this year. That place is golden man. Up there I never even pay attention to the moon phases. We’d usually launch around 9:30pm and any night of the week that window would open around 10:30 and go all night long. So many half awake drives home at 6am LOL. I’ve never fished Racine in the daylight though. Chicago, here on the far south end of the lake is always warmer water temps later into the year. More eastern wind flows churning up the water and pushing warmer water in. We have found in the day light hours, the bulk of the Kings we catch coincidences with the lunar charts. We have the lake front curfew in Chicago. So over night fishing is kind of lost on us for the city. Once in awhile I’ve had a Chicago PD officer come by as he’s making a sweep at Burnham Harbor and has told me don’t worry about packing up. Fish as long as you want. If you need me I’ll be in my car on the street. Don’t get me wrong I’ve caught Kings in the city outside of major or minor activity windows, but the numbers caught in it, mid afternoon is hard to argue. We’re hoping to get up to Racine next week. Thanks for weighing in man. Good stuff!
