Dropping my recommendation for a movie: Redline. Some of the most stunningly beautiful animation you will ever see with a plot and characters that feel like they came right out of some kind of alternate universe, sci-fi version of JoJo
If you’re looking for anime movies, I highly recommend anything directed by Satoshi Kon, a legendary filmmaker who was truly ahead of his time but tragically passed away too soon. Here are a few of his masterpieces: 1. Paprika (2006): A visually stunning, mind-bending journey where dreams and reality collide. 2. Perfect Blue (1997): A gripping psychological thriller about a former pop idol facing an identity crisis, an obsessive fan, and a murder mystery. Intense and unforgettable. 3. Tokyo Godfathers (2003): A heartwarming and funny holiday tale about three homeless strangers who find a baby on Christmas Eve and embark on a touching journey through Tokyo. You can’t go wrong with any of these-they’re all brilliant!
I came to suggest Satoshi Kon too but yeah, you definitely should include Millennium Actress. I personally think it's one of the best movies of all time and rate it higher than Paprika (and I love Paprika).

Season 1 is a lot of setup and fun, but Season 2 is an emotional juggernaught and one of the best coming of age stories I've ever experienced.

With Jojo's Part 7, why not encourage more people to read manga? Manga is great! And more people are reading it. Remember back in the day when watching anime wasn't mainstream? I'm hoping we can push for manga to be similarly more accepted and commonplace.

I’ve been putting off on Dragonball Daima, waiting to eventually binge it. If you’re going to watch it, I might as well do the same. I remember Gavin also loved Witch Hat Atelier. I would love for you to check more of Ascendance of a Bookworm. The anime has three seasons and a new one is coming soon. It's a great fantasy story and the best isekai by far.
Made in abyss is probably the most emotional show you would ever watch. The world is haunting in its beauty and is the best world building out of any show.
I know next to nothing about Steel Ball Run other than people putting it close to or on the same level as The Golden Age from Berserk. Like Akira, somehow, just completely locked in and made one of the greatest manga arcs ever. Cannot wait to finally start reading it with you.
you HAVE to do a review for the p7 manga because its just that much of a step up in quality from everything before it. it really is just that much better (not that the previous parts are bad or anything).
I do hope you make at least a short vid on Daima. Pacing may be a bit slow but really enjoying the world building and almost One Piece-esque style of adventure. And it's a very pretty series, beautifully animated as well.
Anime Movie Suggestions: Colorful (2010) The Boy and the Best (2015) Millennium Actress (2001) Paprika (2006) Any Ghibli Movie you havnt seen The Girl who lept through Time (2006) 5 Centimeters per second (2007) Tekkonkinkreet (2006)
It’s kinda sad that you are not going to make a video about Goodbye Eri or Look Back, I was expecting those, but oh well. Do try to watch Look Back some day! It is a wonderful adaptation. By the way, I’m assuming you are planning to change the focus of your channel to anime more than manga? I understand your point to wait for anime adaptations of Jojo part 7 or Witch Hat to release to post videos about it, but I thought the focus of the channel was manga, not anime.
I do both. I'm basically doing similar to what I did with AoT where I enjoy the story on both mediums, but my content itself is far more focused around the manga than the anime. Though there are some series where I pretty much exclusively do one or the other, like I've been enjoying Jojos anime only (though I'm going to start reading manga now) and I do OP pretty much manga only.
Sounds like a good line up! Please make a DB Diama review, love to hear your thoughts on it! Movie recommendations: Wolf Children, Garden of Words, & Ride your wave. Not a movie, but a mini series you might like is VAMPIRE IN THE GARDEN.
i’m excited to see your DB Daima videos! i saw in a previous video you said you were gonna watch FLCL but i couldn’t find a video about it. which video do you talk about FLCL?
i am SO glad youre reading steel ball run!! its literally my favorite part its SO GOOD. but im so sad you wont do a video :( i want to hear your opinion on it right now sooo bad.
If you're anything like me, I doubt you'll be able to read Jojo part 7 slowly. I planned to read it slowly and like savor it, but at a certain point in the manga I just could not put it down 😂 I hope you decide to do a review for it when you read it! I know recent news is pointing to an anime adaptation coming out sometime, but a significant portion of the fanbase have read part 7 and I think would enjoy hearing your review while it's still fresh (including me :D)
I'm really glad you're enjoying Witch Hat Atelier. I remember quite a while ago you asked for manga recommendations on a video and i commented with that series because it seemed like a perfect match
I really want to recommend the movie "Pompoko" to you because I know how much you loved Yokais and the folklore around them. It's not a masterpiece like "Chihiro" but it's still a fun and sweet movie many tends to forget.
Maquia is definitely a movie that should be up your alley Merphy…It’s one of my favourite and all the qualities in movies you stated you gravitate towards are all in this so if you see this definitely give it a shot
The animatioj of Violet Evergarden (13 eps and one movie) is as beautiful as Your Name and Suzume, but it will make you cry your tears quota for the next 3 to 7 years. So proceed with caution
Merphy, question for you now that you've had a few years experience with manga/anime, that may even warrant a video. What lessons do you think books, particularly fantasy novels, could learn from manga? Or vise versa? I've been of the opinion that more fantasy novels should try adapting their stories to animation first before attempting to do live action.
So excited for witch hat atelier videos once the anime comes out more than anything, the art and story being so next level. Apparently, other mangaka have said that it's scary how fast the author can draw too
I know you want to be inclusive with Steel Ball Run and wait til the anime is out and over, but that is so long and I've been dying for your opinions on it since you started part 1. Please consider doing a video based on the manga with proper spoiler warnings. Thank you!
RUNNING to the comments to recommend The boy and the beast by Mamoru Hosoda, Wolf Children also by him, Tokyo Godfathers by Satoshi Kon and Millennium Actress by him also! Oh, and legend of Hei / Luo XiaoHei!
For the movie suggestion. Origonal Ghost in the Shell. While very heavy sci-fi, it brings in rather philosophical questions about the self and what is a soul, and the art style is stunning for the time period. It's not heavily "plot" based but it's more about conversations of the state of things than plot. The Plot that is there does lean into detective story but again, it doesn't follow the typical formula of that.
Steel Ball Run is Araki’s magnum opus, genuinely one of my favorite stories of all time. Also the anime for it is almost guaranteed to be revealed at a Jojo event in April based off of leaks and past reveals, so it looks like the wait won’t be long!
I really recommend reading "Land of The Lustrous". I guarantee that you will not regret it, and you will experience something unforgettable. Same with "The Horizon", one of the best manhwa ever made. For movies, I recommend anything made by Satoshi Kon. I also recommend "Sing a Bit of Harmony", It's an anime musical and pretty fun.
I'm so happy to hear you'll be watching Daima! I've been eager to see you cover more DB things, and Daima has been a ton of fun so far. Thankfully they chose to make it a followup to the original manga rather than to Super or any of the modern movies, so you're all set to watch it already. I hope you enjoy it! Though since you're doing more anime movies, I'd love it if you found a chance to check out the first modern DB film, Battle of Gods. As much fun as Super and Daima have been, BoG is to this day my favorite thing to come out of the new stuff. (I say "new," but BoG is over a decade old now. Yeesh, what even is time?)
for movies i'd recommend basically everything " Satoshi Kon has made", For Ghibli I recommend Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, Wolf Children is something i highly recommend as well. If you love Dragon ball Z then i'd recommend watching the Future Trunks movie. OH PLEASE watch One Piece Fan Letter if you havent yet!
i saw a few ppl mention it, but satoshi kon’s movies are amazing, specifically perfect blue. i would say they’re not the type of movie that you said you were drawn to, but it’s 100% worth it. it’s a psychological thriller i would say and makes you question what’s real and what’s not
After reading DanDaDan i feel like it is made for this channel. Amazing themes and characters with an awesome balance of romantic comedy with action and a bit of horror. The new anime is as good as the manga is!
the movie Tokyo Godfathers from Satoshi Kon is so beautiful and emotional, at the same time, it is so much fun. Perfect for christmas season as well. It's about a group of three homeless finding an abandoned baby and taking it upon themselves to find the parents before christmas. Satoshi Kon loves to make psychological films, great Director. I think this is the best introduction to his work!
its a shame that there wont be massive videos on SBR and i rly hope youd change your mind on it. the best part about part 7 is the switch from Weekly shonen to Monthly Ultra Jump. the amount of depth that Araki is able to give jojo after the swap is INSANE and so worth it to look at it closely
Witch Hat is so wonderful. It's an absolute masterclass in tone management, it's a very difficult thing to make visceral nastiness and creepiness coexist comfortably with pure joy and tenderness, but Witch Hat Atelier does both so deftly. Nothing ever feels crassly exploitative or like cruelty for the sake of cruelty or overly saccharine. It positively radiates with care about both the characters and the ideas being explored through them. The next English language volume comes out in January and I'm incredibly excited to get my hands on it.
You are in for a real treat with Steel Ball Run. That manga is Araki's unrestrained creativity.
I'm so excited for it!

So what happened with FLCL?
As for stand alone movies, one so obvious that people probably think you have already seen it: Akira.
I do hope you make at least a short vid on Daima. Pacing may be a bit slow but really enjoying the world building and almost One Piece-esque style of adventure. And it's a very pretty series, beautifully animated as well.
Anime Movie Suggestions:
Colorful (2010)
The Boy and the Best (2015)
Millennium Actress (2001)
Paprika (2006)
Any Ghibli Movie you havnt seen
The Girl who lept through Time (2006)
5 Centimeters per second (2007)
Tekkonkinkreet (2006)
For movie suggestions, I would suggest Liz and the Blue Bird, and Maquia. Both are incredibly emotional and beautifully animated!
+1 on the dragon ball daima video interest counter, i'm loving the show right now
Sounds like a good line up! Please make a DB Diama review, love to hear your thoughts on it!
Movie recommendations: Wolf Children, Garden of Words, & Ride your wave.
Not a movie, but a mini series you might like is VAMPIRE IN THE GARDEN.
i’m excited to see your DB Daima videos!
i saw in a previous video you said you were gonna watch FLCL but i couldn’t find a video about it. which video do you talk about FLCL?
hearing you talk so positively about witch hat atelier makes me so happy!!! i knew you’d love it!
Movie recommendation: The girl who leapt through time, if you've not already seen it :)
i am SO glad youre reading steel ball run!! its literally my favorite part its SO GOOD. but im so sad you wont do a video :( i want to hear your opinion on it right now sooo bad.
If you're anything like me, I doubt you'll be able to read Jojo part 7 slowly. I planned to read it slowly and like savor it, but at a certain point in the manga I just could not put it down 😂
I hope you decide to do a review for it when you read it!
I would recommend wolf children as a movie to watch. It's a beautiful movie about motherhood with some prominent supernatural elements
Apparently, other mangaka have said that it's scary how fast the author can draw too
I really suggest watching Maquia: When the promised flowers blooms
For movies, I recommend "Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms". It's one of my favorite movies of all time.
Recommendation for a movie: A Silent Voice. Really emotional, beautifully animated film.
I know you want to be inclusive with Steel Ball Run and wait til the anime is out and over, but that is so long and I've been dying for your opinions on it since you started part 1. Please consider doing a video based on the manga with proper spoiler warnings.
Thank you!
Perfect Blue and Paprika are two of my favorite all time movies. Very psychedelic.
RUNNING to the comments to recommend The boy and the beast by Mamoru Hosoda, Wolf Children also by him, Tokyo Godfathers by Satoshi Kon and Millennium Actress by him also!
Oh, and legend of Hei / Luo XiaoHei!
A visually stunning movie (but in a different way) is The Night is Short, Walk on Girl. It’s crazy good
For the movie suggestion. Origonal Ghost in the Shell. While very heavy sci-fi, it brings in rather philosophical questions about the self and what is a soul, and the art style is stunning for the time period. It's not heavily "plot" based but it's more about conversations of the state of things than plot. The Plot that is there does lean into detective story but again, it doesn't follow the typical formula of that.
assassination classrom was not a name i was expecting to hear, but I'm glad i did. great stuff
Part 7 is one of my favorite stories period. Look forward to your review and the (very far away) up coming anime adaptation
Kingdom
Steel Ball Run is Araki’s magnum opus, genuinely one of my favorite stories of all time. Also the anime for it is almost guaranteed to be revealed at a Jojo event in April based off of leaks and past reveals, so it looks like the wait won’t be long!
Merph, I'll be waiting for u in the land of Kingdom *queue luffy wano meme*
Ooooh Witch Hat Atelier is so great. I love it! can't wait for you to discuss it!
Highly recommend getting into March comes in like a lion it's so good
I'm so happy to hear you'll be watching Daima!
OH PLEASE watch One Piece Fan Letter if you havent yet!
i saw a few ppl mention it, but satoshi kon’s movies are amazing, specifically perfect blue. i would say they’re not the type of movie that you said you were drawn to, but it’s 100% worth it. it’s a psychological thriller i would say and makes you question what’s real and what’s not
You should definetly watch Wolf Children. It's a beautiful movie about motherhood, I think you would quite enjoy it
Witch hat atelier??? 🥳🥳🥳 also you should try dandadan
After reading DanDaDan i feel like it is made for this channel. Amazing themes and characters with an awesome balance of romantic comedy with action and a bit of horror. The new anime is as good as the manga is!
Radman Aot's retrospective is really good and on point
the movie Tokyo Godfathers from Satoshi Kon is so beautiful and emotional, at the same time, it is so much fun.
If you liked Witch hat atelier, read Dungeon meshi
She already made a short on Dungeon Meshi.
Small dragon ball Daima video would be cool. Thanks for all you do!
