I think it's brilliant that One Piece has two separate magic systems. One that's based on life energy and needs to train and develop, and one that gives you random superpower that you can obtain by searching, hunting, or finding them. Devil Fruits represent dreams, while Haki represents the willpower to chase those dreams.

Depending on what you consider to be a "system," One Piece has up to 9 power systems that're mostly disconnected which I don't consider to be a good thing:
      *Devil Fruits,*
      *Haki,*
      *6 powers,*
*Weapons & Tech,* (Nami and Usopp's poles, cyborgs like Franky and the Pacifistas, many of the early villains,)
      races,
*Magic* (Miss Goodenweek, Sharly, Hawkins, potentially the cult that trained Brooke during the timeskip and the sorcerer from the colosseum, and depending on how canon you consider Uta, Tot Musica),
*Genetic Modifications* (artificial devil fruits, Lunarian clones, and then you also have the Vinsmokes, animal hybrids, and other freaks from Punk Hazard which have their own powers with origins independent from everything else.)
*Non-Haki, Non-Devil-Fruit Martial Arts Abilities,* (Numerous of Zoro's powers that don't fit the descriptions of what haki can do at all, Sanji's original explanation for his fire powers as well as how they could apply to Red Hawk and other poorly explained fire abilities, King Punch which is not from a devil fruit and unlikely to be haki since it was blocked effortlessly by a devil fruit when devil fruits abilities are explained to be vulnerable to haki.)
*and as a bonus,* you also have homies, and how they can be controlled by anyone with Big Mom's vivre cards. That could open up an entire way for characters to get powers like how a single nen ability gives all the Hui Guo Rou family members their own powers, but that's obviously an extension of devil fruits so I wouldn't count it independently. I just think it's something worth pointing out.
I don't think stacking a ton of power systems onto each other with little relation is good writing especially when numerous of the powers become redundant. Like how a devil fruit, haki, and Six King Gun all allow shock wave generation. Sharly can see into the future with magic despite future sight also being a haki power. Manipulating "elements" like fire and electricity can all be done with all three devil fruit types thanks to mythical zoans being oversaturated since Wano, tech, genetic modifications, and Non-Haki techniques. That's 4 different ways Oda has written someone could have the same powers, and that's way more if you break it down by each devil fruit type, and so-on. It's like how people complain about how different editions of D&D and Pathfinder have numerous classes that all do the exact same thing just with different explanations. It's pointless, needlessly complicated, and plainly unthought out. It's just content being written on top of old content as if the writer(s) forgot the old content existed. That's also why I dislike Nen. 4/6 nen types can do the same things the other 3 can because there's effectively no difference between nen constructs and physical matter because the only difference is that nen constructions are invisible to non-nen users, effectively no one who's ever going to be in a nen conflict. Then Enhancement is the only type that's actually properly unique. Specialist is lazy and bad in it's own way because it defeats the purpose of having categories when one of the categories is simply "anything else." Paramecias do the same thing of course.

@@Hiiimy Yeah and Marvel and DC are also horrible clusterfucks with decades worth of retcons and contradictory ideas, yet One Piece managed to also do that with only a single series and a single lead writer. I know there's spin-off series, but I don't think they're canon, and the problems with One Piece would still exist without them anyway.

    • @FiendAnimations

6 powers is just one of the martial arts that exist in the OP verse that use superhuman capabilities, it's not in itself a power system cause saying that would also be saying people who use the different fighting styles we see in dresrosa have different power systems they follow when in reality thats the same way how martial arys work irl with different ones existing
Tech and weapons ain't a power system period, that's like saying if chakraless guns were to exist in Naruto then they're their own power system even though it would count as a technological advancement in society
Sharly just probably has the most broken observation Haki in the series, but valid for the miss golden week and brook's cult I cant remember if we ever saw them using any magic
Genetic alteration is apart of technological advancements, saying that's a separate power system is like saying Nomu's in MHA are in a class of new power system when really it's just technological advancement mixed with quirk studies
The non Haki stuff like Zoro and the king punch is again just being superhuman and Sanji and Luffy using fire can probably be chopped up to Mach speeds causing ignition or if you really wanna get into it, oda stated that some people can just do that and he gave us an example of such with the guy who used flame sword techniques in marine ford, no that was not a devil fruit ability.

I think the difference you pointed out between HxH and JJK (essentialist vs. existentialist type dichotomy) comes down to each story's main themes. HxH is about the voyage towards the unknown and (not) letting yourself be consumed by your goals as to realize that the path and detours along the way is what matters most. Meanwhile, JJK is a story about self-actualization and negative cycles, it's about harnessing/controlling the curse and use its power to actualize/unravel your potential and break free of (or embrace) the cycle that plagues you

In the magic system I made years ago for some different stuff I've written including TTRPG rules, the magic system was build on souls. Souls are 5th dimensional parts of a living creature's being. (Without souls, things are considered 4th dimensional due to time.) I was really obsessed with conspiracies and human sacrifices so that was an inspiration. Souls are burned as fuel when casting spells, but they naturally regenerate. The younger a person is, the stronger the fuel from their soul is. That's why children make better sacrifices. Undead characters no longer regenerate their soul naturally without stealing magic from others. The souls of other things such as animals or plants can also be burned. Ancient objects also generate souls over time. Different types of wizards focused on burning souls from different sources. People could of course burn their own souls to casts spells. Wizards can also force pieces of their souls into objects or other people to transfer powers or create magical objects.
Kineticism is separate from magic where instead of burning the soul for magical effects, someone pushes their soul into the primary dimensions to manifest it physical to do things like super physicality, telekinetic movement (including across dimensions for what is essentially teleportation), generating energy, or hardening external objects including air to do things like run on air.
There was also psionics that didn't involve the soul and was entirely based on manifesting imagination into reality, linking minds together, and putting physical things into someone's mindspace. There was a mind, body, and soul theme if it wasn't obvious.
There was this whole additional thing where when someone trains their soul to be strong enough, it'll passively leak across space, and tiny fractions of them will be reincarnated into others. Gods of different religions were all just really powerful wizards that had their souls grow into different people. Being a spiritual descendant of a particular person can also change the implications of whatever powers a character excels at. All people eventually go back to being spiritual descendants of a single, monotheistic god.

Magic and power system are basically the same, the terms just stem from different origins.
Magic from the (medieval) fantasy genre more or less established by the Lord of the ring.
Power was used as an all encompassing term for the various abilities used in battle shonen at that time, most notably dragon ball & the big three.
The in the video mentioned minor difference come from the primary roles the supernatural had to fulfil in their medium:
    - In Fantasy books an imaginative world alien, yet familiar to us
    - In battle shonen mangas a visual manifestation & extension of the characters and to spice up combat

This is the first time I've ever seen ANYONE actually talk about what happens in Kagurabachi, cuz all its fans ever do is just say over and over that it's peak and everything about it is perfect without ever going into specifics. They turned so quickly into exactly what people memed on before the first chapter came out.

    • @Authorwithanimeicon
      @Authorwithanimeicon  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Honestly while you can find videos online and discussions on Reddit and whatnot, I do generally agree that broadly there is not as much discussion about Kagurabachi’s specific story triumphs and maybe even missteps as I’d like. It makes sense why the fan base developed as it did, the meme essentially convinced everyone the manga was going to be axed early on, and would never have a chance to grow into something worthwhile. The people that stuck around after chapter 1 for lack of a better way to describe it, sorta had to play into the bit and gas it up lots to ensure its survival. Not to suggest that’s why the manga is still around, though. Things like fan efforts to use VPN’s to vote on weekly chapters and rallying around importing volumes is arguably what did the most for Kagurabachi’s early success. I say because even I imported a copy of Volume 1 when it first released in Japan, as I truly believed in where the series was at that point and where it could go. I think now that the manga has had enough time to stretch its legs and really cement itself, it’s worthwhile being a bit more critical about it, since a form of excessive positivity isn’t necessary to present the idea that it’s worth keeping around. I do think Kagurabachi is a really fun manga to follow weekly, and I really like a lot of the ideas it presents. Its main narrative specifically hinging on the death of a parental figure speaks to me a lot as someone who lost his father at age 13. That said, while I don’t go out of my way to look for content analyzing Kagurabachi’s specific story beats and content, I have generally picked up on a vacuum of people doing that. It seems to be mostly about covering the manga week to week, not to shade those who do that mind you. It’s just interesting to notice. Especially as far as like, a lack of people navigating and presenting those ideas to a broader audience. Like one of the few people I have seen make videos along those lines is a pretty defined figure in the fan base. Even with their interests in other manga and anime stuff actively being presented, it makes me wonder just how much reach it actually has.

Haki IS based on Vital Energy. There is a common misconception among fans that willpower = just haki. It is not. You can have excellent willpower and not have haki, just ask the Supernovas when they met Rayleigh. Willpower is the manifestation of ‘being aware and ready’. Rayleigh describes it as a form of life energy that all living beings have. Even with the newest arc, the idea that Haki can be ‘stored’ would make it a form of energy, not tied to willpower anymore.
Here are some examples. Observation Haki allows the user to see the ‘auras’ of the person they are trying to find. Conquerors Haki allows the user to ‘project’ their own Willpower and knock out those not dedicated to their goals and aspirations.
Finally, another example is that Observation Haki allows the user to sense the life force of someone else, and if they die, they ‘feel’ it. Almost like the Force and this has never happened on a major way except with Ace (whos fading life was sensed before he died on cameras.)

To my understanding, before I watch this analysis video, is that Life Power Sytems comes in 3 factors Will, Emotions, and Life Energy, which in other terminologies are Life Essences (Spirits, Souls, Ideals, etc. are part of that category).
But they all share the same limits, and that is Cost.
What you get will, in turn, take what you have.
The best examples are when a character deals a significantly massive blow to a highly levelled armoured character, and in turn, that aggressor will feel numbness, fatigue, tiresome, and pass out.
Another best example is risking your own life for power. "I will sacrifice everything, even my life, for that power." That Trope
That is for the longest time how I understand every life power system I saw in fiction and fantasy. With simplicity of "No Cost to Great"

Like spamming the Tri-Beam and it's upgrade, with no downsides to the user despite having a clear cost to it.
Make them feel the cost, Joint pain, visible aging, weakened immune system, or just actually have a indicator of how much 'Life Force' still inside the person, or have a character comment on the fact that something is missing and to what extent.

Eg, they're more proficient because they grew up using Nen, BUT their youth caused them to be potentially short-sighted in how they define their abilities.
