I recently discovered your content and love it. I like this melodic exercise for range building. I was reminded of Harold Betters -- Pittsburgh's "Mr. Trombone" -- playing Funky Ballerina. Check it out on Spotify. When I was 10 years old in 1968 and trying to decide between the clarinet and the trombone, my dad and a friend who was good drummer, took me to see Betters at The Encore -- a smoky club in the Shadyside section of Pittsburgh. I was blown away. I picked the trombone, of course, and I play every day at age 63. Lisa keep up the great work.

Hey Colin! Obinna Nwakwue hit the nail on the head. 8va means to play one octave higher than written. I did this to avoid too many ledger lines! When it gets that high, so many ledger lines can be hard to read. Other options for this, are switching to tenor clef or even treble clef. All of those options come up in music, but I prefer 8va =)

I feel at home and grew up in the german tradition of "Posaunenchor", which is a traditional set of merely brass instruments following the purpose of accompanying christian services or worship. Last november I started a YT-channel "150drei", trying to make multi-channel recording of some songs which - I hope - can maybe used for accompyanying singing in services. Here I use only trombone and the same instrument (88H). So - have a good time in Japan and a "good embouchure" for your music. God bless you!

This is awesome, I have a question on something else? I have lots of fast pieces in some of my high register music phrases and I need some advice on how to do that. Even after replaying the same thing over and over trying new things, it’s so hard and I can’t ever do it. Any advice?
Hey Vincent, thanks for your comment. My advice to you would be to slow the phrases down! Do you use a metronome while you practice? I would slow the tempo down to half tempo, then speed it up gradually. I explain this process in this video if you want to check it out: th-cam.com/video/eZ615XCi5Lc/w-d-xo.html Also, practicing in the high register can be tiring. I suggest taking breaks in between repetitions and practicing the phrase down the octave. Playing the phrases down the octave helps get the pitches and the intervals in you head without wearing out your chops. I hope this helps! 😊
I'd not come across this idea before - although I had seen something similar - playing chromatic scales and each time starting half a step higher... This is more "interesting" though! Question - When you took your "break" after the A, how long did you break for, did you do any other exercises during that break (e.g. low notes or similar) to "loosen up" a bit before carrying on?
Hey, thanks for watching 😊 Yeah it’s a great way to improve your high range! (Or low range if you do it in the opposite direction). You can do any melody, scale, pattern, arpeggio etc. When I take breaks during exercises like this I usually just rest for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Not long, just enough time to get the blood flowing back to my chops. No, I do not do any other exercises during these breaks. I find playing low notes to loosen up counterproductive. I like to keep my embouchure “set” in the high range, if that makes sense.
I would say do it on whichever horn you perform on! If you perform on multiple horns, try it on all of them and notice the differences for yourself. Small bore horns take less effort to play in the higher register. Larger bore horns will take more effort.
Awesome sound and intonation, specially keeping the sound quality through the whole thing, even with the breaks there's the fatigue you have to fight. Impresive! Thanks for sharing!

I'm not nearly high enough it seems, or I have no idea how trombones work. Why would it be taxing on the performer to play higher notes? Is some kind of vocalization a part of playing the trombone? Don't you just make that blowing not-quite-a-whistle thing with your mouth like all the other wind instruments?
Tim - great question! To make a sound on the trombone (or any other brass instrument) you buzz your lips into the mouthpiece. I am not sure of the exact science behind why playing high notes is more taxing, but it has to do with the exact muscles used. When you play lower notes, you buzz your lips slower in a more loose fashion, using larger muscles and more muscle groups in your face and around your mouth. It actually feels quite relaxing! As you play higher, the muscle groups you use get smaller and the buzzing gets more precise. These smaller muscles, making more precise movements fatigue faster.

The whole business of blowing/buzzing with your mouth for expressivity is so weird to get your head around when you're used to anything else. I remain glad I never tried to pursue wind instruments. Synths are keyboards are more forgiving!

Much easier for trombonists who have read bass clef all their lives to just do the 8va. Unless you've had lessons pretty much from the beginning in both clefs, tenor clef can be a real challenge of breaking old habits. It's easy for people who are used to it but those of us who aren't it's like going from the US to England and trying to drive off in a car.

Hi Joseph! I believe in this video I was using a Bach 5GS. Sometimes I do get a mark on my lips from playing the trombone. I guess not in this video. It could have been the lighting? Actually, the Bach 5GS makes it harder for me to play in the higher register. I like to use it so I don’t loose the sound in the lower register. When I am just playing high, or lead trombone, I like to use a Bach 6 1/2AL

It is crazy isn't it? When you get really high you barely have to move the slide at all. You can play almost everything in 1st position 😂
