    I love this vid
I ended up getting into TH-cam arguments about sa and csa in horror with a couple people who were like wahh wahhh cry about it to CSA SURVIVORS LIKE MYSELF IN THE COMMENTS like that shit was wild to me and I decided to shut it down and calmly explain why pointless shit like that can trigger people. But they doubled down, so I think that it's probably immature children finding urbanspook and thinking it's the pinnacle of horror.
I feel like sa/csa can be in horror as long as it’s treated with the thought and care it deserves, I feel like the kid and the camera is a good example, it’s so fucking scary and didn’t trigger my trauma I was just extremely on edge throughout the whole story, same with the children under the house. Both are good series with similar elements to Urbanspook’s stuff. Guess what? Neither triggered my trauma and neither messed me up for days because the thing was being portrayed.
Horror writers, especially ones who have never met any csa/sa survivors please consult some for how to portray this shit in horror respectfully.
Don’t just add it in for shock, we already know the killer is terrible they’re killing people.
My favorite part in any of ‘the painter' before I stopped watching was the 911 call, (in the episode family) it didn't have sa in it and it was miles better than any other point in the series.
I was much, much younger than Cory when my trauma happened (I was four) and all I can feel is disgust and emptiness for this story and this episode specifically
at this point spook's work feels more and more like a twisted power fantasy rather than a horror series and that makes me worried for him and the people around him.
I feel like part of it is that we never get time to appreciate and grow with the victims, they get so little screentime that you become desensitized quickly. Like everything being 'oOoOoOo look how brutal the killers are and how nobody can catch them' is just really boring. Everyone barely getting close to solving the mystery and then immediately dieing also makes it a bjt frustrating to watch.
(Sorry for the nonsensical rant I just have many thoughts and can’t summarize them all, also spook using autism as an insult just really put me off, it’s essentially just the ‘illiot vs Idiot’ of the R slur at this point. I’m autistic, you are talking about real disabled people :/ granted this is probably a lesser evil to the power fantasy sa stuff)

@@AlvinFlang69420 I’m assuming it’s because less people witness a murder, especially a gruesome one and actively engage in horror content where violent murder is extremely common.
I’m a bigger fan of existential and cosmic horror though so I watch a lot of analog horror because that stuff is common in this genre. I’m also not trying to imply that I wasn’t upset by the people dieing, maybe I’m just desensitized from seeing so much murder or violent/painful death in horror. I do actually prefer it if people make it out alive in a piece of horror content though.
But Sa/csa isn’t that common or something I expect in a piece of horror media so if it isn’t handled well it can lead to me spiraling into awful, awful memories.
I do agree with u tho some deaths are very much to far/not plausible for a character based on real killers, like it began to feel supernatural. And by the second vid that’s were I was expecting it to go, but not it just made me remember something awful that happened to me.
Hope this made sense, I mean violent deaths are pretty common in every horror genre so I guess nobody bats an eye. A lot of deaths could probably be written better.

As an actual child sex abuse victim, I’m disappointed but not surprised. Our stories are consistently used as content for shitty shock horror, for people to go “god, that’s awful! Imagine if that was real!” And then they log off, safe and comfortable. Completely ignoring that this is quite literally our daily reality. @@alexcat6685 I believe the names of the kids are also purposefully named after real child r@pe and murder victims though (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong)
From actions outside of his TH-cam like his Twitter it’s also clear he doesn’t care about s*xual assault victims like myself (I was four) and veiws it as just another scary thing to put in his series, it would have been equally as scary if it wasn’t sa or involved children. Like the way it was presented felt like ‘also the violent murderer also violently defiled these children just because I thought it would be *shocking* to put in tehe 🤭, don’t get mad that I’m making money off of people buying the art that’s meant to depict a fictional csa victim’ if that makes sense.
Also autistic people (also like myself) are also more likely to get s* assaulted, so it’s gross that he’s essentially used it as a replacement for the r-slur in his Twitter meltdowns. Coupled with the fact that he can’t take criticism, even light criticism, makes him kind-of seem like a hypocrite.
Yes you can have csa in horror but it has to be handled with tact and intent. Think about if it has any overall impact on the story you are telling, if it’s really that necessary. If you’re presenting it as accurate/realistic read accounts of real victims/talk to csa survivors, he’ll ask them for tips on how to handle it in your story I bet it would be a lot better and more praised if you did so because it would improve the overall project. You gotta remember murder victims usually don’t survive and have to live with the abuse they suffered for their whole lives, sa is a completely different type of pain than getting almost killed is. Especially in cases where the victim didn’t get justice (like me, my assaulter barely got charged because he was 12 and I was four. Which to an extent I agree with, but to this day he’s not a better person and he did much worse things to his sister than he did to me. He never went to juvy, or got court mandated counseling, he just got kicked off of the bus we both rode for nine months. He still ignores his restraining order and comes up my road.)
I’m not going into to much detail about what actually Happened because this is a TH-cam comment section and I don’t really want to mention what having stuff like that happen for several weeks straight while being pressured not to tell anyone felt like. Hell I can’t even remember a lot of it other than emotions. (your brain can block out memories if they’re extremely traumatic)
In the long term it effected me by making me extremely weary of men I don’t know/do know and know for a fact I’m safe around especially if alone in an enclosed space like a car or room with said person. I had to switch my driving instructor because of it.
I’ve also had to chase the guy off of my road with actual weapons several times, like once I had a hatchet. Extremely stressful to deal with the guy I freeze up a bit, but there are kids on my road and I don’t want him around them considering his track record and he has legitimately no busies or right to be on our road especially near my home considering the actual restraining order.
(Sorry for how little punctuation is here I’m very tired, just wanted to give my experience and context for why I feel the way that I do)

This doesn't even seem like a documentary on a real killer because the killer just seems like Mengele cranked up to 100, which don't make the murders realistic but really cartoonish and dumb. Before I get called soft, Urbanspook didn't even unnerve me because it's just shock value with no substance, and series like MM and Mandela Catalogue did because their stories are genuinely unnerving.

The main problem I have with the sa, cp, and zoo parts is that it focuses way too much on the details to the point of desensitization for edginess value. It's not out of character for horrible murders/serial killers in real life to not only do some of the same stuff, but exponentially worse than the Painter series. There is just too much focus on how each victim is killed, rather than the horror of the two main killers themselves. The sa, cp, and zoo segments should be a _lot_ more vague. Plus overall the entire story could be a little more vague with all the victims fates in general. What makes the horror sub genre with scary and unrealistic monsters is the less that is explained about them, that way it is left to the reader's/viewer's imagination of how horrifying the monster is. And the human mind is capable of making things seems scarier then they actually are.

I hate so fucking much how Urbanspook used csa for his horror, because csa and that kind of topic has been used in other media but in a much more better way. In my opinion, Lacey's Flash Games described explored csa trauma in the most horrific and sad way. Urbanspooks csa horror is more shocking, with nothing else to add.

    • @alexcat6685

Well sad and horrific is also what urban does, its just that lacey does a better job showing the meaning behind those tragedies resulting in you realiting to it, you see it from her perpective and just how bad it really is.
Thats makes it work, as it doesn't silently act like it doesn't exist while being accurate, as the truth i would persume if the best that kind of survivor would want.
Urban didn't really say anything with it, so it was nasty and gross with nothing to it.
I had an idea of having it represent how terrible expections parents can have on kids as the painter refering to his victim as a "crybaby" would be a refernce to himself. As his dreams were treated as Nothing but baby talk.
So he'd project his own thoughs on the poor child by forcing him to "grow up".
That would actually using the horrific juxtipotision of the artist's action with what he thinks, being more horrifying as he becomes more real.
Lacey is horrifying due to that realness, that the world does have some herrodus shit ontop of the good shit.
      It's amazing as depecting that.

The main issue I have with “the painter” is how it overly focuses on the victims themselves being the horror rather than the killer(s) themselves being the real horror of the story. You’ll notice often even in the most gore infested movies that even though the victims are brutally killed the main horror is still the actual killer doing those acts. They still some-what manage to make you focus on the fact that the real horror here is them.
With the way “the painter” is formatted and written it has a lack of you viewing the killer(s) as the real issue because of how much it focuses on the victims and their deceased bodies in graphic detail. That’s exactly why shit hit the fan with Cory, because it focuses so much on the graphic detail of the victims being the horror. It is completely insensitive when you begin to mingle with extremely serious topics with the way it is written, it makes it look like it’s just that Cory himself is the horror you should be screaming at and not the actual perpetrator(s) and their actions. Yes it’s terrifying, but Cory should not be what’s so scary about it.

I feel like sex-related horror CAN be done right. I mean, the Outlast series, stated to be one of the scariest horror game series ever, is FULL of it. One of the main villains of the whistleblower dlc is literally a r*pist trying to mutilate your genitalia. If you can do it right it can be terrifying, if done wrong it just feels like it's done by a twelve year old wannabe edgelord. It's difficult to find that balance between doing it so that it actually causes fear but too much to the point of being offensive in order to just shock the audience and doing it so little that it just feels out of place and random, but it's possible. It draws from a fear that every person has: a loss of control over your own body.

    • @kitsunemusicisfire

I wanted to come back to this because like a week or two ago I played a game called "my eyes deceive", which is a great example of making a good horror game relating to sex, even relating to p*dophilia. SPOILERS: In the game, you are in a post apocalyptic future where you're a young girl who has to stay in her basement because the world is filled with monsters and some kind of highly infectious virus. In order to stave off the infection, your father makes you take pills every day, which happen to make you tired. He also brings you food every day and tells stories of what's going on outside. After he disappears for a few days, you get to decide whether or not you take the pills, and if you choose not to, you end up not being sleepy and it is revealed that the pills were actually sleeping meds, and your father wasn't actually trying to protect you, he was making you take them so he can... Ahem... "Please himself with your body" while you're asleep. The police take him away and you wonder what's going on so you go upstairs and see the sun for the first time, as well as the entire planet, which wasn't actually an apocalypse at all. He lied about everything. It's a disturbing, scary, and tense game, full of strange but creepy nightmare sequences every night, and the twist at the end knocks you off your feet immediately. Yet it is a great game, because the execution was done amazingly. As a victim of r*pe, I found it relatable and especially terrifying. It's a game that explores the perspective of a grooming victim, and does it well enough that it feels like it's spreading awareness rather than just using it for shock value. It even feels kinda personal in a way, as if the creator is pulling some of it out of personal experience. Pretending to sleep while hearing your father unbuckle his belt and talking about "getting to it" before he has to run upstairs to talk to the was a terrifying experience, a tense scene that even when it's over, and you're safe, still leaves you quiet, like someone punched you in the stomach so hard it took the air out of your body. It'll always hold a special place in my heart, it's a game that can only be experienced once, but perfectly encapsulates what it's like being preyed on as a child. It's short, and simple, and lacks a lot of the things most other horror games have, like gore and monsters and chase scenes and whatnot, but the fear comes from the cold reality that it isn't just a story, it's a personification of a real threat many children face everyday.

Another absolutely fantastic video man, beautiful closing statement.
I can't stress enough about how the art clearly shows soo much talent, and I think that's ultimately what drives me so nuts with the series.
There's clearly raw talent being displayed with the art, and even the sound at points, but everything else is so contrived, and just boring.
I've seen a lot of people bring up the art was made long before the series, and it shows. The whole thing feels rushed around this art, rather thing using that talent to also build a clean, entertaining, and cohesive project.
The newest entry's ending seems to be pointing towards fixing some of this, but it's still in an episode that feels like the other slop that's been pushed out. It's really hard to say what'll happen in the future, if he'll keep doubling down to further alienate himself from the scene, or if he's genuinely taking a step back, and reevaluating it all.
Just sucks seeing someone with arguably a natural talent to create convincing horror pieces, squander it all away devaluing his series after every upload, because people on twitter weren't nice to him.

Cory's whole thing made me tear up and especially the fact that he was called fvckt0y cory in the painting makes my skin crawl, everything in this series makes me feel sick to my stomach, i find the paintings cool? (They look good but the names are not good). Sexual assault and sexual violence (both child and adult) shouldnt be used as a way to shock the viewer. when people who've actually dealt with this haven't survived it, I'm someone who is a survivor of it, i couldnt watch this fully even with someone reacting to it due to the sexual assault and child murder. I felt like my heart dropped while i watched this (hell even you explaining it i felt sick to my stomach), i feel like this wouldve been better without the whole child sexual assault thing (sorry for the rant and your explanation is good and i was able to watch this fully when you were talking about it)

I actually like Faces a lot and think the rest of the series never really lives up to it. It sets out to give you a police log with weird droning anxiety music, bouncing you between crime scenes & paintings, giving you a view of "reality" then one of whatever unhinged shit the killers thought up, then it eventually just leaves you with a ton of paintings offering no explanations. When it was supposed to be a one-off I think it worked well, but later videos took steam out of it by revealing the fates of the victims in really unsatisfying ways
That being said I am still following this series because it has some good components. The audio's great (I even think PIGS' audio conceptually works, but the episode has problems you mentioned) and all the tiny details/clues scattered in frames in the videos remind me of ARGs from the early 2010s, so I'm engaged, but I wish he let go of this need to put the most extreme content in possible when it rarely adds anything just so he can upset twitter people who don't even watch the series. I think it's at the point where it's become more goofy at points, like I just can't take the Mae Ford painting seriously lmfao

Something that gets me about this series is the needless sexually themed gore and the large amount of violence towards children.
I watched Wendigoon react to some of these and he said something along the lines of "if the story can, not, use it then don't use it". Also something along the lines of "the writing needs to earn the privilege to use obscene themes or visuals" Etc.
I think a good example comes from Vita Carnis ( highly recommend if you haven't seen it, *SPOILER ALERT* ), the series is about "meat creatures" near the beginning you learn about a creature called "the harvester" which is a large bulb shaped mass that has a large network of tendrils spreading out from it underground for several hundred ft.
These tendrils are lined with spikes, on one side they inject a nerve agent that paralyzes you, on the other an anti coagulant. If you step over one of these they spring out of the ground like a bear trap from hell, bite down, and thrash violently.
This act paralyzes you and stops the blood from clotting so all the wounds opened by the thrashing won't stop bleeding.
After you die a second set of smaller tendrils rise up to "drink" the blood then wrap around your corpse and drag it underground to "eat" everything else leaving the bones behind.
A pretty fucked up way to die, but also really cool in concept.
Anyways this is told to us near the beginning and is payed off much later when we "see" (more so hear) it happen to a child.
What you see on screen is a sort of wax doll facsimile of the child underground melting into a skeleton while the blood chilling screams of the child explode through your speakers.
You're hearing the beginning of the process while seeing the end of the process and it's so fucking visceral.
The same thing later happens to the mother who comes running towards the screams.
This is an example of the writing earning the right to do something like this.
They set it up early, pay it off later, and don't rub it in too hard or grossly explain it in needless detail. Though I'm sure Vita Carnis also gets a pass for just being well made in general etc.

I think the vita carnis scene you're referring to is a good example of why "if you can not, then don't" doesn't work and just seems more like an empty criticism. The entire scene could absolutely have been told without involving a child, and it absolutely could have been told without a 2 minute long visceral child screaming sound. It was a good scene obviously, but I don't see how it's a good example of what you're trying to describe - you could have told the same story with just adults, or no humans at all and used an animal instead. It could definitely have been told without the realistic agonising scream sounds.
Point is, "if you can not, then don't" is just an empty criticism. You realise that if you take it seriously you have to cut out most scenes in horror.

I'll be honest, I _like_ shock horror, but I don't really like the way Urbanspok handles it. Sure, shock horror for the mere sake of, well, shocking the viewer does exist, it doesn't always have anything to add to the story, and while I'm not really a fan of that, I don't really mind, but my problem is: there is literally nothing that could prepare you to witness it in The Painter. The videos always begin with a warning like "The following video may be disturbing" and all that jazz, it wouldn't take more than one extra textbox to specify that "This video may contain CSA/Animal violence/Sexual crimes", and this wouldn't even break the immersion since all the videos already have a warning. Honestly, the only thing I like about the series itself is art and how it evolves. For an example, the latest episode, "MEAT" had an actual animated bit. "FAMILY" had voice acting. The quality increases, with the phone call in Family being genuinely terrifying and the animation in Meat being unnerving enough to keep you on edge (at least in my opinion). The writing of the series isn't good, and some points are just absurd (487 stab wounds? Really?), so I gotta agree that Urbanspook isn't a good writer. And he doesn't know how to take criticism either. So really, I only like the art, and this is the only reason I am still interested in the series and how it'll go forward. I can just hope though that Urban will learn to take criticism and improve his writing, because I do believe he has potential.

Honestly I agree that Urban Spook should do more then just white text on a screen becuase it is decent but it could be even better. However, personally I like the over the top shock horror. For me it's hard to get scared with big scary monsters or grisley stuff happening on screen, but when you add sa or cp into the mix it's a whole new level of horrific. It probably says alot that it takes the most disgusting acts done in the most grisly of ways to bother me, but I think that's the length horror needs to go for me to be disturbed, becuase that's about as evil as you could possibly be, to the point that if it didn't bother me would be inhuman. All around though good video. I really only thought postively about Urban spook's videos untill I watched this and it's good to see another opinion. Lastely I just wanna say my top three favorite videos of his are pigs as my most favorite, family as my second, and in the walls as my third. Have a goodnight.

For Terrifier 2, I’d just be safe with saying something is “a borderline snuff film”. As you said, its very gorey and shocking for the sake of it, but a snuff film depicts a real murder. Terrifier 1 and 2 clearly show off deaths that are all fake and made with practical effects, if it was borderline snuff it’d show something more real but just lacked a real death. From what I know everyone behind the movies, especially one of the girls who got a brutal death, had a fun time filming it despite what happens to her character

Secondly, even though this is a very gorey movie I’m certain they just faked it like with the rest of the kills. If they had actually brought in a real possum corpse into a school and had actors playing with its real insides I don’t think that’d fly or go under the radar.

I think the worst thing about UrbanSpook is that it's not scary.
It relies so much on the creepy imagery and disturbing content because there is NOTHING else. No characters to latch onto, no ongoing narrative.
Every video is just "We found more bodies. Here's the fucked up shit the killers did and the painting we found. Oh and also the officer who was investigating died."
The Mandela Catalogue HAD a story, it had characters, it actually felt like I was delving into a mystery via various VHS tapes.
UrbanSpook is like watching an edgy mid 2000s PowerPoint video, the only thing that's missing is Linkin Park.
I'm okay with SA/CSA occurring in media, the problem that so many UrbanSpook bootlickers just cannot understand is that it should fucking MEAN something. If it's just done to shock people, then it's immensely disrespectful and just really gross.

I work with victims of abuse and was abused as a child myself. Seeing these subjects being handled the correct way can actually help some people who have suffered from these ateocities, but you need to be extremely careful to even broach the subject. Instead he just shotgun blasts you with these topics and themes which is not the correct way to handle these themes. Ultimately what really got me to write off the series and creator was his handling of the merch. That was outright gross and uncalled for. The flak he got for that was 100% deserved and anyone who wears it also deserves to be clowned on.

An example of a horror story that includes CSA as something other than shock value is The Library Policeman by Stephen King. The main character is a survivor of CSA, and the story's villain, an entity that feeds off of fear, uses that past trauma to instill as much fear as possible in the protagonist. In my opinion that's one of the few ways a story can incorporate CSA without it coming across as shock value. UrbanSPOOK is probably one of those edgy horror aficionados who considers King "too tame," though.
