I'm with you, Paul. The lovely flavorful oil is too good to toss. I buy the King Oscar or Season sardines in olive oil. I make a nice plate of salad with olives and chunks of Provolone, pour out the oil from the can onto the salad, then add more olive oil as needed, splash some cider vinegar, add salt & Italian seasoning, throw on some grated Parmesan, top with the sardines. Dinner fit for a monarch!

One of my memories of hunting with my Dad is the snack we'd eat while in the woods was sardines on a cracker. I still love sardines and every time I eat them, I'm reminded of my Dad.
I love those memories with dad. Good fathers can’t be replaced and when they pass they leave a scar because you miss them so much and you remember their love and masculine strength. Many wise lessons were from my dad which I still implement today. And yes sardines on crackers are delicious 😋

I did it!! 58 and I have finally tried Sardines! I modified your first recipe just a little bit and tossed it with a gluten- free linguini. Gotta say it was pretty dang good. Thanks for helping me reach my goal of adding this little tastiness to my culinary repertoire.
Well, I'm 60 and haven't tried them yet, but I've bought them and they're here in my house. I've been dancing around them for two months. I'm not sure what the problem is because I actually love almost all kinds of fish. I'm looking for something crispy, I think.
I sauté the sardines with onions and garlic in oil olive and that’s my sauce … just add crushed pepper; Bones and skin included! My Italian parents both cooked them in a cast iron skillet until crunchy and put in crusty bread with a little aioli. Yum❣️
Tried the garlic and herb sardines using the WRITTEN recipe linked above. Turned out well (thanks) but it is different from the recipe on the video. The recipe on the video first instructs to broils the sardine with the butter garlic mixture -- WITHOUT the panko -- for several minutes -- and then, in step two , instructs to add the panko to the butter garlic mixture and pour it over the sardines, and return the dish to the boiler for another 2 minutes. In other words, in this version, the panko is only broiled for 2 minutes and so it does not burn. The written recipe, however, states that you should add the butter garlic mixture INCLUDING the panko to the sardines and then broil for 5 minutes. I followed the written recipe but smelled the panko burning after about 3 minutes -- and pulled the dish from the broiler in the nick of time. In short, this is an excellent recipe, but folks should follow the recipe on the video so that they do not burn the panko. Panko will begin burning after about 2 minutes under the broiler. Thanks.
I just eat sardines right out of the can. Got to taste and love them as a kid. My dad enjoyed them in a sandwich, with Mayo. I know this sounds gross, but having tried it, it is quite tasty. But, just out of the can is my fav. A can for lunch is filling and delicious.
Mine dad as well. We would buy sardines from the war surplus store in military green cans. We needed to pull the key off the lid and open them by rolling the lid off with the key. Sandwiches, soda crackers, cheese, or straight out of the can. Didn't matter. Still eat them to this day. But I must say, they don't seem to taste the the same as in those days. But I'm 71 years old, so most things don't taste the same or as well as they did when I had an appetite.
Growing up with an italian grandmother I got used to eating a lot of simple foods. My favorite was pizza. She would make a good homemade bread dough and put it into a baking pan. Then would come pasta sauce, anchovies, sardines, parmesan cheese. Bake till done. Then my favorite part, put it into the refrigerator until cold. Salty and delicious right out of the fridge. It's likely an acquired taste but to me it was far better than the hot store bought pizzas.
My son loves sardines, but has them on toast for breakfast or dinner, I will use them now in a pasta sauce. I cannot believe i did not realize that myself considering i put tuna in a tomato sauce. so thanks for the recipe. Super. Your grilled sardines reminds me of spending time with my grandmother in Portugal. Grilled Sardines & a hunk of bread is lunch.
When we start making Sardines gourmet, the demand goes up and so does the price. At a time lobsters was cheap and served to Prison inmates, now it's rich people's food.
I’ve loved sardines ever since I can remember. My go-to recipe is just olive oil, a little anchovy, garlic, sardines, pasta, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, Italian parsley, and a little lemon zest. Voila!!! It taste great!!! With fish being expensive as it is, I would prefer to eat sardines than the supposed “fresh fish” in the deli department at the local grocery stores.
Meh I see the sardines as a good source of protein, the amount of calcium and vitamin D you lose from the bones and skin are not a huge impact in my opinion.
I tend to eat the Baltic sardines (called sprats) straight from the tin, or on a piece of baguette, with a pretty sizeable glass of vodka. For puttanesca sauce, I use anchovies.
I just tried the first recipe, the sardine pasta, and it was sooooo good! I had everything but capers and olives so I used feta cheese instead to get that similar taste and it was somehow sweet but savory! Thank you for sharing ❤️
Ahh such a great idea and a very entertaining video to watch ! And the comments are full of good ideas too! Double the knowledge! I’m definitely trying these ideas ! Thanks so much 💖
My wedding catering service actually had a sardine pie on their menu. My husband turned up his nose when I decided it needed to be at the event. I make a hearty winter soup with sardines with little sardine taste. I use tinned sardines in tomato sauce. In a large bowl I cut them to bite size. To taste I add more flavored tomato sauce (marinara, heart healthy, herb laced, etc.). Unsweetened condensed milk container next. Diced onions raw or sauteed, fresh garlic chopped. Add other ingredients to taste. Slow simmer to meld ingredients. Unique flavor but not very "fishy".

Easy recipe w canned sardine in oil. Empty oil from Can into pan. Add dehydrated onions, garlic powder, paprika, hot chilli pepper, black pepper powder, fenugreek powder and salt. Just stir to mix all. Layer sardines from can into spice mix. Gently split open each sardine and turn over do both sides are coated nicely. Just brown it a bit. It can splutter so be careful. Add this spicy sardines w plain hot rice or on buttered toast or anything else. Amazing!

Yummy, cheap and easy too is: Spaghetti "The old Admiral" style. A german students recipe from the 1970s or so. Cook 500g spaghetti. In a pan add some olive oil, 2 tins of sardines, one minced onion, some minced garlic, as much chili as you like, stirr and squeeze well, until you get a kind of sauce. Add a good shot of white wine, salt and pepper, let it cook to reduce the liquid a little bit, then add fine chopped parsely and the cooked spaghetti. Mix well, add some more olive oil and, if wanted, some lemon juice, serve and enjoy :)

I love sardines… right out of the can.
Going to make this. I have Castelvetrano olives only. Not a fan of canned olives. I guess the Castelvetrano would work?

I am trying to get my kid to eat more fish with omega 3's. Do you think I could use more sardines in the pasta recipe without overwhelming the flavor? TIA
