Looks awesome Brent! Also, for the mantle, you should use an old beam from a barn and run a string of LED rope lights underneath it. That's what I did to mine a few years ago and my living room is the most modern space in my house.

Oooooo I like your thinking with the LED's and the barn wood. Would be a fun one to mix into the equation. Thanks so much for the suggestion and the continued support.

Looks great! Question, my fireplace has bumpy bricks that are not smoothe on the surface like yours. Do you just keep adding the feather mix until it is smoothe? (I would say some of the brick sticks out more than 1/2 inch in areas)

Great makeover! Would this be as "easy" to do on a stone fireplace? Also, for either brick/stone fireplace, is it possible to add a simple/clean-line mantle without damaging the finish?

Does the Ardex hold up well to normal house movement? I live in CA where we have little earthquakes now and then. Don't want cracks in the finish. Our fireplace had built-in bookcases right up against it. What is the best way to meld the ardex and wood bookcases? Caulk?

Cant really tell from the photo… but do the lines from the brick show up on your finished product? We did ours last night and we’re considering a second layer of ardex…
Ours looks like yours before you painted.. so we see the outlines of the brick.. but we dont want to see that in final product after painted.. should we prime before painting?

Perfect- that will work for an ugly brick fireplace my house had done in the 40’s. Unfortunately, the home originally had a tall wood mantle with antique tiles around the inside and a mirror built into it, but they took it all down and replaced with a brick monstrosity. Then we have our original marble fireplace mantle and surround salvaged from our 1886 home, but it’s not large enough to cover that thing we have now. The structural engineer said that removing some of the bricks in order to reduce in size might affect the integrity of the chimney which runs 3 stories. So, I think you provided me with the best alternative to cover that awful thing. Only difference is that I won’t be giving it a rustic look- not my style. I’ll just stick with a smooth finish. Anyway- thanks for the idea!

  • @Novia06

Great video! Interested in how this would work over tile. My fireplace in my century colonial home is covered in horrible 4 in tile, with inch-thick grout. I need an easier fix than pulling it all out, but just painting it seems like it only lessens the sins...and my, are those sins great!

    • @BYOTools
      @BYOTools  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks so much for watching and sharing belle. I’ve never tried it on tile but I bet it would still work. However if the tile is very smooth then I would suggest going over it with some 80 grit sand paper to abrade the surface. Thanks for watching and hope you subscribed.

Great video and narration. I have a question, in the beginning you talked about a super smooth texture but in the end it feels a bit rough and imperfect. Was that a limitation of the materials you were using or did you achieve the look you were going for with a bit more texture. If so could you have produced a smooth texture with a bit more finesse? Thanks for your time!

Excellent job I am scared though. My dated fireplace wraps around into our kitchen. My brick isn’t as bad as yours though. Everyone tells us to let it be. That it’s industrial.

    Why not just use stucco?

Why in the world would you remove a stunning feature to convert it to a plain wall...
You could have painted the bricks and mortar to update it while keeping the aesthetic, iv you wanted to go crazy you builfd the mortar and surface grind the face to seal. You could have done a whole manner of things.
Not to mention if his was the end result why not just direct stick some sheetrock for a quicker and cleaner finish.
    I don't get it.

Painting the inside seems sketchy to me. I would be afraid of a chemical smell when the fire is burning.

Look at all that beautiful brick that he covered.
You don't cover bricks. Never, ever, ever, and I mean ever, cover up bricks.
    Unless there cinder blocks.

Oooooo Saul. I knew there would be a few die hard brick lovers that would hate this one haha. I am actually a fan of brick, but mainly for exterior uses and this brick color really didn't go with the rest of the space. Something had to change. If brick is desired later on we can always install a thin brick over the top of this very easily. What do you think of the thin bricks that have been used for a while now? Might be using some in the near future on the exterior of the house. In any case thanks for watching and sorry to disappoint for you brick lovers.

Looks good but I would’ve personally painted the brick 🧱 removing the brick pattern makes it look plain and no character

@@AlDeB_ it also ruins the brick for any future owners. So many flipped houses sitting on the market for ungodly prices with completely ruined latex-painted fireplaces.

Thing is there was 0 need to ruin the brick here. Should have just built a surround and had the best of both worlds. Whatever you want up and not ruining original design elements of a home.
