    When I have small and large pieces like you have on your Hearth stone. I always try to put the small pieces to the back. Not only for looks but also integrity of what will be the most used spot of the area. Small pieces tend to break into pieces and or off quicker. Also useful for decks patios and rock work.

    I think the difference between you and us, you have that positive touch and determination. Most of US on the other side have the motivation and willingness but it’s the partners in the household that have the negative attitude with any project and once executed, the whole project crumbles. Great partnership and positive support, no matter how it turned out, all great energy. Loved it!

    was pretty hyped at first, when you showed it at the beginning of the video from far away. But when i saw you doing the tiles and grout on the tile inner edge.. well, you learn by your mistakes. if you are just a bit unlucky, your tiles will crack there. Also, better spend some more time on layout prep. Anyway, i like the DIY stuff you do.

      I did the same at my house but since I never used the fireplace, that is not an issue. To me fireplaces are decorative, makes no sense to use them when the house is centrally heated and in an even temperature.

      @@bosoares Not everyone has central heating. My house has heat and A/C through most of the house, but the living room was an addition and isn't tied in, so our fireplace is the only way to heat it. And even with central heat, there is just something so nice about cozying up next to the fire.

    Great work! Is there a reason why you usually refrain from alternating pieces? I’ve noticed that for the past few projects that all your tiles comes to 4 corners instead of alternating cuts. Most people I’ve talked to seem to think it’s taboo to have the 4 corners when tiling.

    Looks very late 90’s. I think mordern fireplaces reuse brick or use a lot more black, not a white marble style. Just my opinion. The room needs to be painted if you want that white marble to work.

    • @jw1731
      @jw1731 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good point; Marble or marble effect looks nice on its own but when we paint next to it the color choice can be tricky. Since most marble is more gray than white, painting the wall with a light color makes it look dark, but painting too dark will pale the tile and take attention off the tile. I’d think maybe using a paint that closely matches the marble color might work? It’d look more cohesive but with the part of the room with marble veining as the focal point.

    There was nothing hideous about that fireplace. When redesigning you must realize that what is trendy today may not be when you try to sell your home. Design it in a way that still improves the value of your home regardless of how trends come and go. That light colored marble may be appealing in the summer when it’s warm, but can exude a cold icy feel in the winter. Not what you want. A fireplace must exude a cozy warm feel about. Hard cold marble doesn’t do that. If you don’t like brick then go with stone.

    Nice job dude, another great video and the end result looks amazing! For the sake of others watching, I thought I’d share a couple things from when I used to set tile that may help out too: 1) try and match your thin set color and tile color as best you can. That way you don’t have to be as critical with the knife cleaning up before grouting. Also, if you use a natural marble stone instead of porcelain, the dark thin set can really darken the look of the marble, not ideal. Not a big deal if you use porcelain/ceramic though. 2) for corners, also consider making L cuts instead of two separate tiles. This will keep your uniform grout lines. 3) before tiling, think about the focal point and base your pattern off that, and tie it to both vertical and horizontal surfaces. For example, if you snap a line from the center of the fireplace to the top, then use a straight edge and continue that down under the fireplace, onto the bench, and onto the ground, it really brings things together and is more visually appealing. This is absolutely a nit picky thing that NO ONE would notice (unless they set tile), but if you do it, it really is more visually appealing. Your work speaks for itself and it’s still gorgeous - very cool to see you and your wife working on these great projects together too. You should be really proud!

  • @TomCGhost
    @TomCGhost 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Honest question; Why use the spacer pieces on the bottom, but then fore-go them on the upper trim? The whole time I was fixated on the small square tiles on the upper face, no spacer was used and I can see the "unsquared" tile the whole time. Grout helps, but one adjustment and it would look way more square. Is this a style preference? Do I have OCD? Am I wasting my time commenting about someone else house and if they enjoy it then that all that matters????

      As someone that works in the industry. There is not one job that is perfect, all that matters is the customer is satisfied. The customer sets his own expectations and is okay with it. This is a win win. This job wasn’t done for Tom L. Also the way trends go I wouldn’t be surprised if the white on white marble look goes away. Watch this be remade 5 to 10 years later, not for quality of install but customer preference or what is most popular at the time.

    Under $400 is crazy compared to having it done by a company which could cost around 5-10K. I have a similar ugly old brick fireplace and was quoted it would at least cost 5-8K for it to be redone especially having to do a gas insert in it as well
