@@TheMiniseany As soon as possible, I would put my hand in his bowl starting when he was a puppy. He would bark or try to get the food. I would say No! And he would know over time not to guard his food. Eventually, he realized that food was always there and it didn't matter went near his bowl. It took time and patience. I would train him at random times to entrain him not to focus on the food bowl.

That’s a very important one. I also worked on food guarding with my dog when she was a puppy. I would sometimes feed her by hand or put my hand in her bowl while she ate. I would also pet her and go behind her. Then I would also take some food from the bowl, when there was no reaction we just called her a good girl, and praised her vocally. I’m so glad we did this because one day my friend brought her puppy over to my house and my dog was eating. Her dog went straight to her bowl and started to take some, we obviously removed the puppy cause either way she shouldn’t do that, but my dog had no reaction, just looked at her like “ummmm, this is my food”

I was living in London at the time and very deliberately socialised my puppy to be comfortable with trains and buses. I was a bit too successful and it backfired months later, when she was off leash in a park and saw a red bus out of the corner of her eye. Ran hundreds of metres out of the park and tried to get on the moving bus! Luckily it was a quiet suburban street and there was no harm done, but she was back on her leash for another month until her recall was more perfect...

I’m living in a dorm ish situation (have my own room but shared bathroom, kitchen and living room) the girl that lives in the room across from me have a Chihuahua. When I first got my puppy she attacked him twice in a week. Once when we tried to introduce them and again when the girl left her door open and I was taking my puppy out to go potty. I was super scared we wouldn’t meet other dogs soon enough and he’d become reactive. Luckily though, on my way back from class a little later my university was hosting a Service and therapy dogs of campus event where they’d be off duty and play with each other and students. I told the host about my puppy and what had happened and told me to go get him bring him to the event. It was perfect!! some dogs played with him, and some just acknowledged him with a sniff and carried on but made me so happy have the opportunity to surround him with almost 30 other dogs of all kinds of breeds and sizes that were all highly trained and super friendly. He has absolutely no problem with other dogs now, he just sits and watches them and if they approach he’ll sniffs them and if they initiate play he’s happy to play but if they walk away he just walks back to me :) I always check with the owners and ask if their dog is friendly or not though, and if they say no I pick him up and put some distance between us and them because a friendly dog that’s been attacked enough times becomes a reactive dog eventually no matter the age.

The biggest reason to stay away from dog parks is that your puppy will start to pick up bad habits from the ill trained dogs that go there. Both with dogs and in general. You have to establish yourself first otherwise they’d rather learn from the things that look and act like them. Obedience training can become 10X more difficult if you let them have bad influences early on

I feel dog parks in the Netherlands are different from American ones. A lot of people do bring their puppy here but keep them close to them so they can actually socialize with other dogs and the other dogs can still go wild.
Besides that we also have parks where dogs are allowed but always have to be on leash unless they're in a little surrounded area. This is a great way for pups to socialize with both dogs and humans.

    • @mystichawk1612
      @mystichawk1612 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You are correct dog parks here are a mixed bag. Some are okay and some are not it really depends on the owners. I currently live where you have to pay a yearly fee and people act like someone else is going to pick up after their dog. I live in an apartment so need the fenced in area to let him stretch his legs. I go when it is the least busy and have no problem leaving when a poorly trained dog shows up.

Crate training was something that completely went over our heads with my childhood black lab (we didn’t understand it was a lifelong thing u kept up with after puppyhood) but we were introduced to it properly with my second dog (yellow lab) and it’s an actual miracle, for both us and him. Don’t get me wrong my current dog still has his chewing issues (although I think he does it to be spiteful, cuz he’ll go after specific people’s things depending on who’s wronged him most recently lol) but because he has his own designated space where he can go and be left alone for a bit, compared to my childhood dog he’s way better behaved and easier to manage. 1,000,000/10 would recommend, especially if u have small children, elderly, or a dog that just likes to have some space to themselves sometimes!

If your little puppy is uncontrollable chewing everything and eating every small thing it can find in the house, then buy a chromed metal playpen of around 3 x 3 feet or if your living room area is big, a 6x6 feet playpen. Lay some old newspapers on the floor and top it up with some clean newsprint. Once setup, your puppy has a sufficiently large area in your living room to move and play around without chewing on your furniture or swallowing some unknown stuff in its mouth. When it pees or poops in the playpen just remove the affected portion of the paper on the floor and replaced with a new one. Also buy a large metal cage to put your puppy in while you are cleaning his playpen. For exercise, take him out for a daily walk outside the house in the neighborhood using a leash to prevent the puppy from running itself into a moving car.

Well I’m doing something right then even though the puppy biting is by far the hardest to control. in 1 week of ownership of Storm the 10 week old Cane Corso I have managed to teach her
    1. To go toilet out in the yard
    2. Crate trained for overnight and during the day whilst left alone
    3. Sit on command but we’re working on the stay.
    4. I can pick her up and carry her upside down like a baby with no squirming at all.
    5. Well socialised and will continue to do that
    6. I tried your method of dropping her metal water bowl behind her without her knowing, I don’t do it often or neither did I train her to be tough but she spins around to see what the noise was but she’s not running for the hills 💪🏻
But she’s a bit of a land shark at the moment so I’m now working on mental stimulation to keep her busy and tire her out mentally.
Huge thanks for the help so far

I don’t know if you have tried already, but what I have found that works well is when the dog is biting, to place your finger on the middle-ish of the top of their tongue and gently push it down, to the bottom of their mouth. Feel free to hold and increase pressure very slightly if necessary. They will typically not enjoy this method (obviously lol) and it has worked many times for me in the past, I’m pretty quick fashion. Good luck and let me know how it’s going! 🤙

I taught my dog (treeing walker coonhound) many tricks and I tried to prepare him for hunting and one of the best methods to tire him out was when I had him do search which is to hide objects and treats in different places and I would have him search for it and that stimulates their brain, drains their energy, and the best of all he would be very helpful whenever I had to look for something. He helped my neighbor find her Parakeet

A good alternative I've found to dog parks is actually finding puppy groups near you or socializing with the dogs of friends especially if you know the dogs. My buddy has a husky and Great Dane/Cane Corso mix they are extremely friendly dogs both were rescues they were brought in to a home with an elderly dog and several cats there has not been an incident yet. Sadly the elderly dog has since passed away the rescues actually got depressed for a while. Back to what I was saying it's better to socialize with dogs that are in the same puppy age group or with dogs you know and trust.

1st 3 things when you bring your puppy home. Take your puppy outside and show it where you want it to go potty. Very very very 1st thing when you wake up in the morning take your puppy to the potty place, After each meal, Last thing before you go to sleep at night, And at intervals in between. Number 2. Do not let your puppy in other peoples yards, houses, Or cars Until your puppy has had 3 sets of
Puppy shots. The Parvo virus Can live for around a year where a sick puppy was once before. Number 3. Begin socializing your dog with other animals and people. Never hit your dog, Have fun with your best friend❤

I don’t like crate training, there’s always an alternative. You wouldn’t put your 2yr old son in a cage so why do it to your dog. “What ab taking it to the vet” get the mf a harness and seat belt
And in the house, if they know where their bed is, you can train them to stay there until you say otherwise, there’s no need to physically prevent them from moving.
    Just my opinion but ye

Anytime they start nipping or biting, grab a toy and redirect their mouthing to the toy. When they accept the toy and divert their mouthing to that, praise enthusiastically within 1 second of them redirecting their mouthing to the toy. Be consistent with this and they will eventually learn that biting toys is okay and biting people is not.

Tap them on the muzzle and say "no". In my experience, they do grow out of puppy biting. My 1 year old would bite and not let go when I got her at 8 weeks old. After a couple of weeks she wasn't nipping me, but loved to chew.
She still likes to chew now, but it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be. My only problem is that she chews when I leave the house and it's difficult to train out of her, so in the crate she goes whenever I'm not around. I also crate my 6 month old puppy for a few reasons. I got him at 4.5 months and he's left alone 5 days a week whilst I go to work, but if I'm in the house, he HAS to be with me at all times. He will scratch at doors, bark, whine and more than likely try to chew things, so he goes in the crate pretty frequently if I need to do some cleaning upstairs or go for a shower because I can't have him diving around all over and trying to destroy everything just to get to me.

I guess it depends on the dog park I was fortunate enough I knew some of the people already that went there when I brought my American Bully after he finished his puppy shots. I guess I was lucky with no bad experiences and he turned out to be a very social dog with other dogs and confident. Now he's unaltered so now that he's fully grown he's a little more rambunctious with newer dogs so I had to take him to the park when it's less crowded since he is dominant or two other males. But that's knowing your dog I think the big problem with dog parks people either can't control their dogs or they don't know who their dogs temperament but I have had dogs run up on him in the street and he's done nothing he's been very patient and especially with little dogs so I do think there is some benefit to socializing your dog with other dogs so they're not fearful

All of the above. Too many people take their poorly trained and under socialized dogs there. Dog fights are way too common at dog parks for this exact reason. Not everyone gets their dogs fully vaccinated either, so your own dog or puppy can be at risk of getting sick. In some cases it can be deadly.

It kinda both almost every day there is a dog fight and some owners don’t care which is selfish plus it’s dirty and nasty dogs can die from diseases there I don’t recommend it it’s better to just socialize with dogs you know I heard about someone who lost a dog there and they have never been the same since that traumatizing experience

    • @joeschmoe2697
      @joeschmoe2697 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I’d say both. It’s an uncontrolled environment which means you don’t know if a dog that’s too aggressive or even just too playful is gonna show up. And with a puppy that is in early stages of development a bad interaction can be significant long term. It’s best to find dogs that you know are well behaved to introduce to your puppy, and watch a video on the do’s and don’ts of introducing dogs (like location matters and other stuff).
Also, I’d never take a dog to a smaller dog park that’s fenced because every dog just does their business in a concentrated space where the play happens, but I take my dog to a dog park that’s a bit bigger (like 5-7 acres) and it’s fine in my opinion, but I would say it definitely doesn’t hurt to keep your eyes open and watch for trouble dogs.

They are a herding dog which means they have high energy and drive. They can nip at and herd kids if you don't curb it early. They thrive with mental and physical stimulation, and if you don't meet those needs, you'll likely end up with a nipping, destructive dog.

My sister hated that i crated my dogs. But she didnt understand that unless I make the crate feel like a punishment, crates are ok. My dogs were well behaved, they eventually didnt get crated much but I kept crates open in their spaces at all times so they had their personal space. They would go in there on and off on thwir own to sleep, hide their toys from each other. Crates are the "bedrooms" of the dogs.
