    I'm glad Mina mentioned that owning luxury is really signaling to others who you are or who you want to be so that you're treated a certain way. Funny enough, I would never buy a luxury work bag because I don't want my employer to think that they pay me enough if I can afford a designer bag.

      Everyday we wake up, we all change our verbal and non verbal communication (fashion in this conversation) to support the role we want to project depending on what social environment we are in. Actresses and actors get paid to do this as a career. I have the option to wear a more blue collar or more white collar version of my work uniform every day and because I interact with a very broad spectrum of people with different backgrounds in the world, I choose to wear the more blue collar version of my uniform to improve the perception of accessibility, connectedness, and the ability to relate to folks. I see the moments when certain folks, folks that tend to place a high value on luxury clothes, may not give my job role and my knowledge proper consideration because they judge how I am dressed, but that is their mistake and I will still out navigate them. Red flagging yourself by wearing some high end luxury brand does not guarantee respect.

    I’m wondering why nobody is talking in length about weight fluctuation and how that play into fashion consumerism. Most women I know have had major weight changes throughout their lives and with that comes the need for a wardrobe over haul. And of course we could just hold onto all the different sized clothing to be able to meet the ebb and flow of our body’s. But with that comes the shame and reminder that those clothes don’t fit anymore. That reminder can only add to the relationship body dysmorphia plays in a majority of women’s lives. It’s especially difficult for women in the professional world where your work attire is under scrutiny of upper management. Or for women who have recently had children and feel pressured to get back to there pre pregnancy weight. I’m not saying this is the only reason fast fashion has infiltrated to the degree it has. It’s just a huge factor and would like to hear added to the conversation about sustainability and the vast reach of consumerism.

      This is a good point, I do think there's some clothing that is designed with a changing body shape in mind. For example anything elastic or made to stretch. There's also lots of dresses and skirts that have ties at the waist to accommodate a changing shape. For my body type I've found my clothing will accommodate a 20lb weight range, but if I gain 30 it's time for new clothes... So clothing is made to change a bit with your shape, but unless your doing Lycra bodysuits, or putting tons of lacing on something it's not really feasible to make clothing that'll fit everyone at any size.

      This happened to me for the first time a couple weeks ago!!! It feels awful and I love so many of the clothes that I bought when I was a smaller size and they are sitting up in the attic "just in case" and they make me feel horrible about myself. This is such a great point!!

      @@ashassassin yeah it’s tough to go through a big weight change. I’ve done it dramatically a few times in my life and it’s hard to face your closet each morning. And it’s hard when gain a lot of weight in places with extreme seasonal changes because good winter coats are expensive even used. And if you lose to much weight(which I have done before because of kidney failure) your shoes don’t fit :( I hope you have someone in your life you tells you how beautiful you are at any size ❤️

    Would have loved to hear Mina Le’s opinions on accessibility vs consumerism. For instance, often times the only brands you can find in inclusive sizes are fast fashion brands. So for a large proportion of the population the only option sometimes is fast fashion.

    • @MissieK
      @MissieK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I think you will hardly find a fashion blogger talking about that. Even if they buy secondhand vintage like Mina, the sizes are usually smaller so they do not know the struggle to find bigger sizes in an ethical brand.

    • @thomasdegroat6039
      @thomasdegroat6039 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@MissieK yeah, I always feel left out when the major talking points of ethical shopping are “buy vintage or secondhand.” I’ve never once found something that could fit me in a vintage store and when I go to thrift shops, most of the plus sized clothes are like graphic tees or much uglier/grosser than the straight sizes.

    • @MissieK
      @MissieK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@thomasdegroat6039 agreed. Every time I look at ethical brands most of the sizes are small/ medium at best and 2-5 pieces only come in larger sizes. So you have to go to fast fashion to get something

      Agreed. I wear Vintage reproduction clothing and i have noticed the same issue there. OR my Personal pet peeve: "ethical bras"
      Which is really Just a bunch of Basic bralettes that do Not Help anyone past a c Cup. I would Love to buy sustainable bras, but im a DD and organic basics simply do Not offer wired bras, Or even decent nonwired bras, that actually do their Job.

    Ooh, thanks for reminding me! I just paused the video to go over to Etsy to write a five star review for the shop that made me a custom linen dress that turned out shockingly well-fitting. Custom tailoring makes even an odd body shape look good, and the drape and the silhouette look expensive.
    With sewing history in my family, I really appreciate well made clothes and return them if, say, the pattern isn’t matched at the collar/button placket/seams. My teenage daughter enjoys thrifting and modifying clothes, hallelujah, so we avoid a lot of the fast fashion. All the same, this video was helpful and great food for thought. 👍🏼⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

      I’m not sure if you’re talking about a personal designer or someone who can tailor clothes to your body, but the second one is very accessible!! I buy second hand, but because I have a small waist and larger thighs and hips, I often have to pay to have my pants and some dresses tailored. I typically spend $25 per pair of pants to have them professionally tailored by a local seamstress. It means I get better fitting clothes, and I’ve shopped second hand and small business all at the same time!

But as a 1x size woman, it’s becoming nearly impossible to find clothes that 1) look good, 2) are designed to fit women in double digits, 3) aren’t polyester or acrylic and 4) are made using non-exploitative labor practices. I would LOVE to pay decent money for decent clothing, but it seems like every year it’s harder than the last. with regards to the body trends and fashion, i'm liking the puffy oversized silhouettes coming more to the forefront as a counter movement to the body "ideal". Rejecting what should be "flattering" on your body feels like a rebellion when it's constantly policed for us as women. I'd rather be judged for the crazy piece i wore than the shape of my body as it naturally is.
    This isn't about hiding per say, since large pieces will take up more physical space which is often not allotted to us. I think this is seen in the sensation around the selkie puff dresses and other popular designers like SImone Rocha, Molly Goddard, Cecilie Bansen. They provide an extreme feminine silhouette that doesn't emphasize the female body which i enjoy a lot as I feel more and more confident to take up that space and accept that form of attention.

    This was such a great interview that sparked sooo many suggestions in my head for future videos. Is the comments section the appropriate place? I don’t know but here’s a random one - hearing the words “financially solvent” made me realize I would LOVE a collab with Not Just Bikes about financially solvent cities.

    I loved this video!
    I normally don't like summer dresses because of the current styles not being my type, but recently I bought a vintage summer/spring dress from the 80's that I adore! I can't wait for warmer weather to I can wear it to a picnic or just day to day. I am really lucky that the town I am living in for University has at least a dozen if not more thrift/vintage/antique malls. That makes buying second hand so much easier.

    I use the 3 day rule: I put something in my cart and leave it for 3 days. If I still want/need it, I buy it. Also, for me personally, having a subscription for Stitch Fix has helped me cut down on costs. I get a new box 4x a year (once every season) and there are at most, 5 items in that box. I pick items that I can wear across seasons and will complement what I already own.

      I tend to window shop online,add them to cart and then log out and clear. If I remember that I still want it in a week or two, then I will buy. Googling stitch fix, never heard of them

      Also, if u put things in your cart, on Etsy, u are often rewarded for waiting, since some sellers will send u coupons to incentivise u to buy.

    I'm a huge proponent of my semi capsule wardrobe. I have like 5 bottoms and 5 tops for my everyday office job that I rotate. They all match each other since they're some combination of green, beige, orange and brown.
    But i also have a few things for when I'm just at home or for going out that I don't incorporate into that core matching wardrobe.

    My accountant is my HERO. I've had just a couple of crazy years in paperwork and not to mention my business so it's not only just a great thing to feel better about, but he's made some really great recommendations about how to re-invest in myself and my future. +1 on the hiring an accountant/tax preparer if you can afford it!

    I've always wanted to develop my sewing skills better, but I never got around to it until the early pandemic. As a new mom, I had a really hard time replacing my pre-baby wardrobe with clothes that fit my personal style and my post-baby body. Tailoring suddenly felt like a necessity to get the clothes I wanted. Now with #2 on the way, I've been doing some maternity projects because of how frustratingly limited those options are. Tailoring is a skill I've fallen in love with, but it's definitely been a significant investment of time and money to learn.

    I only really last year/this year decided to really go in for not buying any fast fashion, I had been conscious of the problems before that, but because I was subscribed to e-mail lists/followed companies on instagram etc. it was just way too easy to be tempted, and especially bigger companies are so much cheaper, easier to find, to navigate, and to recieve packages from, everything is just easier about buying from them, in comparison to second hand or smaller businesses/single designers, and that all makes it really hard to step out of that cycle.
