Great to see these events being offered by the park. Wish more parks offered these types of experiences....Didn't know the horses used to go back and forth, would be awesome to see that feature return at some point. 👍
Derby racer is hands down my favourite ride at Pleasure Beach. I remember when the horses used to go forward and backwards and loved that. We were told years ago that they stopped them moving because the had a couple of accidents where people tried to hop between horses while it was at full speed and fell off. It’s a shame if that’s the reason as it spoiled the effect for everyone else who ride properly. Great video 😊
Hello Shawn and Charlotte how are you fantastic vidio very interested and very good thanks for taking me behind the scenes of the derby racer I have always wanted to see that best wishes take care stay safe xx ❤😊
amazing to see thank you, wonder if they will be back the forwards and backwards movement on the ride, think can remember it , used to give the impression of each set of horses competing with each other!
I vaguely remember this amazing Derby 🐎racer ride back in the 90’s on my Blackpool family vacation, I can’t believe it’s still going after all these years it definitely brings back my childhood memories, wow 🤩 that’s awesome you both got to go on a tour around the mechanical world of Derby 🐎 that’s one impressive ride Thank you so much for sharing Shawn I’m so pleased you and Charlotte got to have a few amazing first hand experiences of these iconic rides really makes us appreciate the amount of time effort work that goes into these rides great vlog both of you.
Nope... still can't hear Andy on the mic during that intro aha so cool to see how the ride worked and just how intricate and insanely complicated it all is!
Its really interesting to see rides behind the scenes, i can imagine the smell down there of the workings, im looking forward to seeing behind the scenes of Wallace and Gromit tommorow, great video!
As an engineer myself this is my view on how i think the horses used to move and why i think they dont anymore. I think the mechanism to make the horses race back and forth would have possibly been made up of a separate main cog wheel to the main platform and a series of pullys and cables running independently to it just underneath it. As the main platform turned...the separate pulleys and cables rotated left to right or in a forwards and backwards direction...and the horses would have been pulled back and forth. At 13:10 there is a good view of what I think are said pulleys and smaller cable. You can tell the difference to the other pulleys as they are lay flat under the platform. I think the forward and backwards motion may have been controlled by these pulleys and cables with some kind of clutch to engage and disengage the cables. I do remember riding this ride with the racing working when i was younger and the speed of the forward and backwards motion always was in time with the rotation of the main platform. I'm guessing by it's sheer complicated arrangement within the ride it either became prone to failures and/or a maintenance nightmare to keep it in service. Again...just my guess...I could be totally wrong 😊
I remember seeing an old behind the scenes video like this one (its on youtube somewhere) it was a mechanism failure issue as to why it doesn't run the gallop motion anymore. Health and Safety and stuff lol people used to work down there while the ride was running, crazy. th-cam.com/video/OdjVBAd10vo/w-d-xo.html (found it)
You are correct in identifying the pulleys and ropes. The first view of the underside shows a motor and gear mechanism attached to the underside of the moving platform. This is the control for the motivation or racing system. will very unlikely ever return again, the engineers were unhappy with the safety of it as there potential failures in the system.
@@colettemikaelson160 brilliant thanks for the link. Yeah so what the engineer says kinda rings true to how I can picture it being in my mind. Brilliant. Thanks for that it's a great video too.
@@atmosphericfunfairs1371 omg yes how did I not notice the other motor. Of course it would have ran independently as I thought but actually didn't cross my mind how if would be powered. Great spot. What an absolute feet of engineering to even keep that running for as long as they did.
Someone I knew who worked Valravn also worked at Cedar Downs back in 2021. Feel the ride type is slightly underrated. Each “row” of horses having different tracks, kinda of also shows the ride was fixed anyway lol
wow man all my time ive been going to my favourite local park to me and going on derby racer over the years like others ive never realised what is underneath such a great fun ride and to see the shear scale of it is incredible to see all of the machinery and the mechanisms is just wow 🙈 fair play to who ever built this amazing machine back in the day and its great to see there keeping going such a brilliant fun ride 😍👏
Very fascinating stuff, hope they do more of these behind the scenes tours for the other rides, would love it if they did one for Valhalla in the future once it's up and running again, or even the ghost train, amazing video as always
Don’t know how they do it, I’m definitely not clever enough to build something like that, absolutely fascinating to see it’s workings. Great video, guys!
Really good & interesting video, enjoyed 100% and love historical rides, attractions. Question, now we have seen the behind the scenes aswell the horses on tracks, would you class it as a flat ride or a coaster? Because after seeing the tracks underneath, I maybe consider it a coaster? Or a flat ride? Especially as it does have up & down sections all around the circuit? So, what do you think? Coaster credit? Or flat ride credit? But either way, interesting attraction, loved the virtual tour and can't wait for the next one in future Wallace & Gromit. Cheers for filming, uploading and sharing, again really enjoyed and look forward to seeing more vlogs, behind the scenes videos like this in the future. 😀👍
When I did a tour of the Derby Racer a few years ago they said the 'racing' mechanism was disconnected due to safety concerns. I'm not sure if there was an incident of a riders clothing getting pulled into the mechanism or it was just a scenario raised due to incidents at other parks. They said it was extremely unlikely that it would return in the future! I've ridden the other two Derby Racer rides at Rye Playland and Cedar Point (don't remember that one racing but apparently it does) and the Blackpool one was better!
@@ThemeParkWorldwide No problem mate. Reason i say this is because other channels will simply just film it not say much. But you both put a good deal of detail into the verbal part of it as well you notice and describe things that others don’t see. A little investigation if you would
