That engine was also used in Cadillacs and I seen it apart and looked like a over complicated mess,a lady at work had it and it managed to jump timing and pistons hit some valves.

My 2010 Traverse had an early 3.6 that was known for wearing out timing chains. When I found this out I changed the oil every 5,000 miles, used Dexos-approved oil even though it wasn't called for in 2010, and checked the oil religiously. Managed to hold off the timing chain issues for 170,000 miles before the check engine light and the dreaded cam position error codes popped up. The whole car had been plagued with electrical problems, A/C leaks, and that was the last straw.

the 3.6 in this traverse is not the same 3.6 in all gm vehicles. the 3.6 in this traverse is the LLT. (2008-2011 Cadillac CTS, 2008-2011 Cadillac STS, 2009-2017 Buick Enclave, 2009-2017 Chevrolet Traverse, 2009-2016 GMC Acadia, 2009 Saturn Outlook, 2009-2011 Daewoo Veritas, 2009-2011 Holden VE Commodore SV6, 2009-2011 Holden WM Statesman/Caprice, 2010-2011 Buick LaCrosse CXS, 2010-2011 Chevrolet Camaro) the LLT was the version with timing chain issues. it is a problem with the pcv system starving the timing chain of oil. the LFX, which debuted in 2012,(2012-2016 Buick LaCrosse, 2013-2015 Cadillac ATS, 2012-2014 Cadillac CTS, 2012-2016 Cadillac SRX, 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, 2012-2015 Chevrolet Camaro, 2012-2017 Chevrolet Caprice, 2015-2016 Chevrolet Colorado, 2013-2017 Chevrolet Equinox, 2012-2016 Chevrolet Impala/Impala Limited, 2014-2020 Chevrolet Impala, 2013-2017 GMC Terrain, 2011-2015 Holden Caprice, 2011-2013 Holden Commodore VE II, 2013-201 Holden Commodore VF) is an enhanced and updated version of the LLT. the LFX has different heads, injectors, intake valves, variable valve timing and can run e85. the LFX has an updated pcv system also and doesnt have the timing chain issues like the LLT. the 3.6 LFX in my impala is great. good smooth power. i do my oil changes every 5000 miles and it doesnt consume oil in between changes.

The 3800 was a great engine for sure.

I own a 2014 enclave purchased used in 2016 with low miles. Fortunately, I have been taking good care of this SUV (engine and transmission) replacing the engine oil at or under 5K miles, I removed and cleaned all the gunk and carbon built up on the rear valve cover when I replaced the PCV valve and still running great like new. I have to agree it's not good as muy 07 pontiac grand prix 3800 V6 but if you are mechanic inclined person and replaced oil sooner not following the engine computer oil change life monitoring system you are on the right track to make this last 200K + miles.
DO NOT BUY A USED HIGHT MILES CAR WITH THIS ENGINE UNLESS YOU KNOW 200% THE MAINTENANCE HISTORY OF IT !!!

I have 2 2012 Impalas with 3.6l Direct injection cars(wife and daughter have matching cars). They are at 171K and 218k. No engine problems at all.

If you take care of these engine they will take care of you, but unfortunately many are neglected

Living on barrowed time have a meaning...trust me, that chain is fully stretched and when it jumps the engine is toast.

the 3.6 in the impalas are the enhanced 3.6 LFX. the 3.6 in the traverse is the LLT. the LLT and LY7 are the versions with known timing chain issues. the 3.6 LFX has redesigned cylinder heads, updated injectors and intake valves, and the LFX also added variable valve timing. the LFX version also has the updated pcv system and is not known for timing chain failures.

I have a 2012 traverse with this engine with 160K. It has been a good engine with no problems but I can see how people get into trouble with it. It has used oil at the rate of about 1-2 quarts every 5000 miles since new. So if you miss an oil change and don't check the oil you will blow this engine up. It requires constant oil checking and adding. Unlike my Toyota Sienna that has 220K on it and doesn't burn a drop of oil. I can change the oil in my Toyota and forget about it for 10000 miles until the next oil change. I don't do that but I could.

I always felt the LX5 aka shortstar was the true successor to the 3800

All engines built currently are designed like motorcycle engines. They have to be totally disassembled to repair or you are going to cost yourself and your customer. If anything blocks the oil pickup screen its done. Even a restricted oil system is destroying the engine.

Sorry but these direct injection engines are 100k mile wonders. I call them throw always. I don't care how much you "maintain" them, they are going to bust....one of the reasons that these cars are so cheap on the used car market. Used to sell these and the back room was busy....the mechanics used to say that they are job guarantee #1.....3800 multi port are cheaper to buy and will last longer than the rust buckets they are installed in. Under powered for sure, and would have been perfect if it has the 6 speed in it, but my 2005 lesabre is going strong, get 31 on freeway flat ground 70 mph burns no oil and like the ever-ready bunny...keeps going. And I will drive it into the ground. But it will be the last GM machine I will ever buy ....the rest are junkyard dogs.

The 6t70e is junk as well. The 4t65e is much less problematic

The 3500 v6 they put in the impalas were absolutely garbage too, notorious for development of rod knock

The 3800s were great, but had issues with manifolds cracking.
