What was the mistake that SEGA and sonic team made?

sega genesis(megadrive) was amazing, I still have one. after that was shit, too fast and at the wrong times, but the dreamcast was very decent,
the probem with the dream cast was markting and exclusive games/competition with the new kid on the block, SONY. After playstation 2 came dreamcast died.

Honestly, I just play sonic because I love sonic games. I dont care about the fandom because its just a hideous stain out of all fandoms.
I just love to play sonic games and will never change, Hell I even make my own comics with sonic and characters ive made, like instead of shadow androids being multiple, I made him one evil mastermind out for power.
I wish more sonic fans were like that, just playing the games for enjoyment instead of making a shit-stain.

The fanbase is ultimately why I left the fandom. There was so much negativity in the community, and fans putting down games like Sonic Unleashed, calling it a 'Twilight Princess Ripoff', then saying "lol go back to the Genesis days lol". There were also the people saying that it should just go away and be replaced by another Sega franchise.
With each release the negativity got worse, and when Generations came out and people said that Sega should have scrapped the Modern Sonic stages entirely, that was pretty much it for me. I left the fanbase and after that pretty much fell out of playing any new Sonic releases like Lost World, mainly due to not owning a WiiU at the time (then there was the Sonic Boom mishap when I had one).
Sonic for me eventually got to the point where I saw him as something I had grown out of, like Barney, which was sad considering how important the games had been for me during a rough time with school and being abused. He could run away from situations like this, something I couldn't do, and through Sonic I found something that could give me comfort. If I felt bad after receiving verbal abuse, I could just run, even if I wasn't physically escaping my problems. As Sonic in City Escape, I could at least pretend I was running from my tormentors.
It's sad to see people claim they love Sonic but then be so quick to ridicule the series whenever it makes a mistake. I plan on playing Sonic 2017 when it comes out, if only because the original canon Sonic (modern and classic) will be back once more after 2-3 years of absence. Sonic is important to me, and it's only been recently that I've realized it's okay to still like something even when everyone else mocks it. People may say Sonic fans are all the same, but that's only because they see the negative side and come to the conclusion that anyone who likes Sonic has a mental problem (yes, someone did that). Like with any Disney film or other video game series, there are good fans with fond memories, and I think it would be best if people would keep this in mind before judging all Sonic fans.

Yeah, judgmental and narrow-minded people with their sheer prejudices I'd say are the bigger problems than those who still have a soft spot for franchises infamously known for the fanbases. It's just like racism: someone sees an ordinary black person going to college or work and immediately assumes that he's off to rob someone's house.
If I say I'm still fond for Sonic because it's a major staple of my childhood but a bunch of others still mock me over it, even though I clearly don't make retarded Mary Sue recolor OCs or bizarre fetish art or don't give a shit about reviews on Sonic titles no matter how critical; then it's the judgmental people who are the problems. Unless they can somehow totally justify their unconditional contempt and resent towards me solely based on different opinions and interests aside from the fact that a majority of others would do the same, unless having different opinions can get you fired, expelled, arrested, etc. they have absolutely no right to judge me.
It's near impossible to reason properly with those judgmental people also. Politely assert yourself in front of them with valid points and they'll just dismiss all that and stubbornly continue to claim the entire situation to be entirely your fault and that they're 100% justified. It's like trying to convince a lion not to eat you.

I feel like for classic sonic, after literally 4 hours after his adventures in sonic generations, classic sonic goes on his adventure in sonic forces. cuz you know, time travel logic, I guess lol
Honestly I'm just super easy to please and I keep my distance from the fanbase as best I can while also attempting to contribute goodness to it. I love many of the games, even if a great chunk of the fandom dislikes them.
I know this is going to sound very corny, but ... Well, I actually have clinical depression. I lack energy to do things and motivation to socialize. I often find myself in a very dark place where very little matters -- it's not necessarily sadness. Think of it as a tired hopelessness. I spent most of my hours sleeping and keeping away from the universe and the people that resided within it. But y'know something? I met someone, and they showed me Sonic. They might not be here with me any longer, but Sonic does something amazing for me. The fast gameplay, the energetic music, the pure footloose excitement, the fun and colourful characters of many shapes, variants, and sizes -- there seems to be something for everybody. When I play these games, I get thrilled! I get my enthusiasm back! It makes me start to want to network with old friends, and heck, it's really got me moving again!
Just last week my friends invited me over to play Generations, and we all had the greatest day ever just having a lot of fun and sharing the controller. Shadow is personally my favourite. I have a little plush of him that my friend bought for me on Christmas. I draw him a lot too.
I wouldn't call Sonic a coping mechanism ... It's more of an anti-depressant really. It does everything an anti-depressant does; it gives me energy, motivation, and it gives me a drive to move forward and socialize with others. It gives me a hobby, and it also creates a source of joy in my life.
I have a lot to thank Sonic for, honestly. Shadow too. Rouge, Omega, Espio, Mighty, Vector ... All of them.
Which is why I try to distance myself from the cynical fanbase. I'm sorry for them all. I wish I could share the part of me that finds the magic inside of each game. I want to share my joy with others.
It may ... heck, be the kid inside of me begging to have a blast. Like I said, I am very easily entertained by sonic. The Werehog concept, the introduction of Mephiles, the Wisps, the ARK, GUN ... Man, there's even more to that, isn't there? I'm entertained by it all. The comics are my favourite series to follow, but after all I've said so far, I know for certain that I'll be disliked by many of the fans. I appreciate SEGA's efforts to create games that everybody loves. I may not be everybody, but I'm a part of everybody, and I love them all very dearly.
Sonic, is good for me. He's there.

This fanbase needs more people like you.
I have a illness too, and I need people to transport me all over to do things. When my day is done at work, I put my stuff away and go relax by playing video games. When I got better at them, I started new stuff like Sonic, and he is way more fun to me than Mario and Luigi, and when I found the cartoons of Sonic X and Sonic Boom on TH-cam, that got me laughing so hard. (Sonic can be a dumb-butt in Sonic X, and Knuckles is a total moron on Sonic Boom).
While I cannot personally relate to clinical depression, the likes of Legend of Zelda, Sonic, and Undertale give me a certain passion that I otherwise don't exhibit.
The future is what you make of it, friends. A lot of this fanbase appears to be wallowing in doom and gloom on top of being drunk with nostalgia. The fanbase is beyond Sega's ability to save. Only by keeping our heads high and keeping the past behind us (without forgetting it) can we fix ourselves and become better for it.
Give yourselves a chance to be happy. Just... smile.
You're right. Try to only remember the good past though, because the bad past will hold you back, and it makes it hard to smile. Never look back, just keep moving forward.

Also the judgmental people who resent those who still have a soft spot for those franchises, even though they're willing to break their stereotype, then expect it to be entirely their fault and that them putting them down for being different is apparently totally justified via the narcissistic flip.

Okay, but here's the thing about the Shadow the Hedgehog part. People ASKED for a sonic character to have a gun. E-102 Gamma is an example, no one complained about that. Right? But once Shadow has one, everyone starts flipping their shit.
You can only blame the fans, not Sega themselves. Sega only did it because they were PRESSURED to.

I've seen many videos on the problems with the Sonic fandom, but this one goes into more detail as to why the fandom is as unstable as it is. If anything, Sega set up the problems to begin with given the decisions they made with the franchise in it's early days, and this led to a domino effect that led to the fandom's downfall.
Here's why it is the way it is. The Sonic fandom at least online anyways.. The internet is addictive like a drug. Spending enough time on it can actually rewire your brain. people after 5 minutes browsing the web who had never gone online before, had completely rewired brains after. The internet can destroy your imagination, it is a escape from reality, and life problems, it can impair your ability to tell the difference between things, and when I see things it can impair your ability to tell the difference between anything really. When spending enough time online your brain can eventually get to the point where you have to search the wed to make your brain think of something, rather than having you think for your brain, almost linking your brain up to the internet and it becomeing part of the internet. So fans likely after watching or reading something online, will have rewired thier brains. So, whatever the fandom says is what your mind is tricked to believe because of how the internet effects it. It can cause more problems, like causing sleep problems, since computers, tv, and iPads, and iPhones have a specific light called blue light, and it can actually reset your clock to make it so if you play it late at night, your body will actually start to make you wake up as if it is morning eventually after looking at the iPad, or whatever, and your body will think it should wake up and make you feel wide awake at night, and tired in the day. That, and being addicted, it can make you want to use the internet more, and more, until people use it excessively, and need more, and more time online, and play it all day. So, some people get to the point, where they not only play it all day, but all night as well. The destroys your memory, attention, and basically your mind. It also can lower your I.Q, literally, depending on how you use it, and can even cause depression, and people who are deprived of it, who are addicted, can actually experience temporary symptoms, like feeling withdrawn, anxious, and fatigued. Yup. People online are drugged. I am an addict, I'm not immune. The internet can cause you to have a lack of sympathy for others. It can cause problems with school. The internet is as addictive as cocane. It is seriously, quite literally a drug, comming with all the side effects a drug can have. So a lot of people online here are drugged, that's the problem. The Sonic fandom is one example. They got their brains programmed to think Sonic adventure has to be the best game and if anyone says it's not, they cannot tell the difference between fact and opinion anymore. I have stayed up till 8:00 AM now at latest ever since getting addicted to the internet. If everyone is up all night online, how can they be reasoned with when being so sleep deprived? And they could be typing comments on youtube, not only in the day after getting a real bad night of sleep, but they can type at 8:00 AM. So there. The internet is filled, likely, a lot of sleep deprived, depressed people, who have bad attention, and memory, problems, and get little excercise. The internet can destroy you grammar so. their imagination is likely not great due to it, and even their I.Q can be dropped due to excessive internet use. So that's why people likely are the way they are online. A lot of people on it, are likely sleep deprived, drugged people. They cannot put ot down, because they're addicted. That's likely one reason why the fanbase, and the internet is filled with crazy people.

Except it doesn't work like that. It's people's fault of destroying their own imagination because they want to be MATURE!1!! It's not LE EVAL INTERNET that makes people think Sonic Adventure is good and protect their opinion, it's called HUMAN BRAIN. Internet allows people to get friends.. People want to keep using the internet because they have a lot more chances finding someone who agrees with them and can understand them - cocaine, on the other hand, is a real drug. Internet is a reflection of all the real world - IT'S NOT THEIR "BRAIN PROGRAMMED AND REWIRED" - IT'S PEOPLE AGREEING OR DISAGREEING WITH OTHER OPINIONS. There are debates, opinion sharing, and many other things, and the ONLY reason you hear that much more in the internet is only because in the internet you have much more people to debate with and much more freedom. It's people's problems or serious mental issues if they can't tell a difference - internet only reflects that. And are there any researches or proofs on the whole "BLUE LIGHT" thing? Your whole comment only shows the truth - internet is a reflection. It's YOU having serious mental issues, not the internet changing you. I stay in the internet because I am talking with friends, sharing my opinions and writing reviews, and yes, I do have a good sleep.
I wish I can give Sonic a hug and fix his fanbase by gathering up all the Sonic fans that love him no matter what (like Amy) and over power the haters with the power of love, positivity, and an actual sense of understanding.

So Sonic remains alive because the kids still buy his games, and they still buy his games because he's one of the few quality kids games, and because he doesn't kiddify too much? Interesting.
So would that mean that Sonic would be more successful if it marketed more towards kids? And since the kids ironically want Sonic to be less kiddy, that this would require Sonic to be less kiddy to achieve this?
The point is that Sonic is one of the few family franchises that has a sense of actual maturity to it. not the illusion of maturity that you might see out of Deadpool with dicks and gore. Kind of like old Disney films. Sonic's best stories are as light as they are dark and are as cool as they are genuine like Unleashed or Rush. They don't try to hard to be cool. They actually show something you can call cool.
When playing Mario Galaxy, I was going in expecting that they were gonna take things more seriously and tell a genuine emotional story about saving one's love while grand or gentle orchestra plays out....then Space Junk Galaxy, a calm level about drifting though space, comes in and ruins the tone with blantant mario music. It started to feel like a legit kids game rather a family game that strives for more than mindless fun. (and gave me emotional whiplash)

Syogren well I don't appreciate it because it just feels like a bait and switch that whips your emotions hard. There has never been a time when a video game turns my calmness into near uncontrollable anger by doing little... and it just. won't. stop. throughout the game.
My problem is not the fact that it plays the music. My problem is that it was so discarding of one of its best elements so damn quickly in the same level. It would have been fine if one level was calm while the other one was Peppy. Sonic does that well with some levels being beautiful while others being peppy. It stays consistent.

Sonic has been around my whole life and always will. I just love Sonic for who he is and what his games have to offer. I understand that some recent Sonic games have not been so good, but I can see that SEGA is really trying to impress the fanbase with good quality Sonic games. Sonic is and will forever be my favorite video game franchise. 💯

No because I also like all the games. I only wished that they had scrapped Princess Elise kissing Sonic in the '06 Sonic game since its beastality and widely wrong. Other than that, I enjoy the Sonic games.
I've only ever owned the GBA Sonic the Hedgehog game (15th Anniversary Edition) and a little bit of Sonic Unleashed, but I do like seeing each game.

I call bullshit on the whole, only Nintendo's knows how to make good quality kids games. What about rash Bandicoot, Spyro, Sly, Little Big Planet, Child of Light, Orni & the blind Forest, Shantae, Shovel-Knight, Prof. Layton, Yokai-Watch, Ni No Kuni, Gravity Rush, Rayman, Kingdom Hearts and so many more?
I am really sick an tired of those Nintendo fans bashing all Thirdparty developers and only because they can not see outside the box.
+Erich Scheidle Its really more about general perception - when comes to it, Nintendo is the only main-stream publisher/developer that is generally perceived as making family friendly games. Lets look at the games you've listed.
Child of Light and Rayman are both Ubisoft games. Sure, both are family friendly. However, Child of Light is an digital only release that isn't necessarily well known and as for Rayman, in the past ten years Ubisoft has only made two Rayman games whereas they've made eight core Assassin's Creed games. And their biggest release recently was Watch-Dogs.
Prof. Layton, Yokai-Watch, and Ni no Kuni are all Level 5 games. Level 5 definitely regularly makes family friendly games, but they are a smaller, niche company compared to the bigger, more mainstream publishers.
Shovel Knight, Shantae, and Orni & the Blind Forest are all Indie games don't get anywhere near the marketing or hype that AAA games do. While Kingdom Hearts has received plenty of spin offs, the last numbered entry from the series KH2 was from over ten years ago and we're only just had KH3 announced recently. Sly and Little Big Planet are definitely family friendly but when most people think of the Playstation brand, they're far more likely to think of games like God of War, Last of Us, Bloodborne, etc.
So yeah, while it may not be strictly true, the general public perception is that Nintendo are the only ones who still do make family friendly games consistently and at high quality.

I'm pretty sure "the general public" and "The internet" aren't the same thing. If the general public really thought that, Nintendo would be getting a lot more sales with both their games and the WiiU. Since they barley buy them, there's no way to think they make quality titles, especially since most of the general public aren't as critical on games as most hardcore gamers would be.
John Kano That still doesn't change the fact that most of the family friendly titles you listed are considered niche. The only one of those that you listed that can be counted as AAA games, aside from Little Big Planet which really didn't catch on, is Kingdom Hearts and that one hasn't had a non-spinoff title in over ten years. Plus, a lot of people tend to view Prof. Layton and Yokai Watch as Nintendo games (even though Level-5 is third party) because they're DS/3DS exclusive.

Anyway, there's still the fact that nobody besides internet fans are saying most of Nintendo games are of quality because they are not buying them. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle & Sonic Heroes were great, I miss being able to play fully 3D Stages with characters from the series who aren't Sonic. I also liked the 4kids era, although Sonic Adventure 2 Battle will remain my favorite game in the series.

By the way, I like Mario better than Sonic except I don't like all Sonic games either. Other recent years, he went from just being near the bottom of the my favorite series like Mega Man to the top when I discovered the older games, like Mega Man. I create my own universe of Sonic about no mythological creatures, dead characters that we liked or loved were alive now, no darkness, and etc. Oh by the way Sonic 4 doesn't take place after Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Pocket adventure takes place before Sonic Adventure, Sonic 4 takes place after Sonic Unleashed after Sonic Rush Adventure after Sonic 06 after Sonic X Season 3 (Japanese).
I think the problem is that the majority of the Sonic fans are disrespectful, greedy, selfish, immature, impatient, ungrateful, spiteful people, but let's face the fact that every fanbase has their fair share of idiots!
I loved a good majority of the 3D titles like the adventure series, sonic generations, sonic unleashed, sonic and the secret rings, sonic and the black knight. As well as sonic colors. Even though sega had it's ok and some bad 3D games. They basically were able to learn from their mistakes and are trying their best and I respect that's and I was born after sonic 3 and knuckles. The classic sonic games were amazing and still are. I don't understand why people bash the legacy that the sonic series has? Ehh..I'd say the CoD Fanbase is a bit worse, as a former sonic fan, I kinda fell off once the good games stopped. The last, truly great sonic game, at least that I touched, was Sonic Adventure 2. I heard good things about Colors, but at present I lack the means to play it to find out.
Some...of the more.."Vocal Minority" fans can have some problems, but I dont feel that reflects on the whole of the community.

I saw an entire lab of chill computer graphics college students explode into arguing when I jokingly brought up a sonic game. I had a friend in middle school that'd debate with me about the archie comics (i had always liked how out there and interesting the plots were. My friend hated the writing), but that was nothing compared to actually seeing the brunt of the community argue. I still like the games and franchise. At this point, I'm kinda rooting for an underdog. Hope things turn out better in the future games, because the personality of the series is whats kept me coming back to it.

I haven't enjoyed a Sonic game since Sonic Generations, Sonic 06 seemed like the full stop for Sonic, as we all know they lost many fans. I'm not one of those who want SEGA to kill the franchise off, I still continue to have hope for the future games. It's really hard for SEGA to make a game that a good majority of us are waiting for, which sometimes makes me want to give up on waiting for that one game I'll enjoy.
The fanbase is all over the place and a lot of people can't agree on anything, it really makes it chaotic.

TL;DR warning
I'm one of those rare fans that is pretty open minded to anything Sonic related. I generally only dislike several things in the franchise; such as how broken it is, one game, and a few characters and some ships. But I wouldn't go all Hulk on anyone about it - at least not without warning others first or apologizing furiously afterwards. I know there are continuity errors in the franchise but to me, EVERYTHING is canon because of the multiverse theory - so anything goes. I think the canon thing has got people broken up in the first place but I could be wrong. This is pretty much one of the only things to upset me as a Sonic fan because I embrace it all - even the stuff that is considered bad. I've always hated the idea of canon at all. Like, it exists but you're pretty much saying "Nah, it's not part of the main series of the games, let's just throw it away." Um... excuse me? Do you realize just how much canon you are dismissing? You ignore the shows, the comics, and a ton of games. You end up with like what, 15 games altogether? I can't even understand what is considered canon and what isn't anymore. For example, before I heard about Team Dark's ending, I thought Heroes was not canon since like with 06, Labyrinth, Shuffle, Unleashed, and other games that they aren't well-liked. Apparently, that's canon but other stuff isn't? Like, why? If a game where you can have two Sonics could happen (not sure if it's considered canon even though people love it to death), why does everything else have to be excluded just because it's contradictory? The franchise has proven time and time again that literally ANYTHING can happen; even if it makes no sense. This is why I think that people take canon and games they love/hate too seriously. Just because 06 is glitchy and hated by so many doesn't mean it's not canon. Just like in the comics, the universe (at least the one in this particular setting) reset itself and life continued on. Simple as that. Unless it's stuff like sequels such as the Adventure games, there is no single timeline from game to game because each random and unique world is just that - a separate world. I mean, if we're going to get real here and say that even the most obscure games are canon, how else could Sonic and Mario compete in Olympics if nearly every game weren't its own separate universe? Even if the tinest details like character pasts and such are similar from world to world, it's still different. Basically, I'm saying I love it ALL. I can't get enough of everything! :D Sorry to get preachy with this but this is my own theory and I'm quite passionate about it (as if you couldn't tell). I couldn't hold back. My point is, I'm basically upset because the fanbase IS broken. Like, why? I mean, if it's gameplay oriented only I can understand - I can't play Classic games due to my poor eyesight - pixels/side-scrolling and me just don't mix. But due to this, the idea that people adore Classic (other than him being adorable af) confuses me and thus my perception is blinded (pun entirely intended). I don't hate the Classic era, I have to respect that it was Sonic's beginnings. But for me, Sonic's beginnings were with SA1 (as well as Adventures of StH and SatAm). I've only known 3D Sonic games and thusly 2D ones just... don't appeal to me. I'd never hate on them though; only the hype of them. Call me young-minded or whatever, I just prefer 3D. I never said 3D is best, however; just that I prefer it. I like all the shows (I have my preferences of course), I thoroughly enjoy the comics, and even though I haven't played all the games, there's only one game I am absolutely sure that I hate. And that is ShtH. I used to hate Shadow but now I'm indifferent of him. If anything, I hate seeing him everywhere - he's like the Frozen or Pokemon Go of the franchise. He's the second most popular character for crying out loud! Tails or Knuckles should be! UGH! Anyway, despite how interesting Shadow's past was, any hope of me becoming a "fan" was killed when I found out fans brought him back from the dead. Like, really? You couldn't let SA2 become heartfelt? You literally destroyed the atmosphere of the game, people. And while I love convoluted backstories to pick apart and learn about, Shadow is a freaking alien android thing now. :/ Why couldn't he just be in everyone's memories? And thus, they had to go and make an edgy out of place game whose multiple endings have no meaning in the end of it all. Just why. Screw the hate of 06 and its bugginess, plotholes, and other stuff, HOW DOES SHADOW'S GAME EVEN MAKE SENSE?! I won't go any further but that's really the only game that makes me filled with hate. Do I hate people who love this game? No. My best friend loves this game and she's like a sis to me. Shipping is a bit of a touchy subject to me only because I know it's what breaks the internet (besides VAs for some reason). I'm a Sonally fan and naturally and anti-sonamy... fan(?). I won't go too much into it but I used to be an AVID Amy hater (now I just greatly dislike her). I'm not one for homo ships because I see no actual evidence that ANY of the characters in any media could be anything other than straight. It's like having Sonic swear. Just... Ew (it even feels weird when Shadow does it!). I'm also against crack pairings; especially crossover crack pairings. If the pairing actually makes sense regardless of the who is involved or if it's a crossover pairing, I'll likely be okay with it or even support it (although, I'm not one to talk as I am a fan of one-sided pairings due to sympathy for the underdog). I'm also the type of fan that doesn't see Sonic and humans as bestiality since to me, humans and Mobians are the being just different races - not different species. Elise and a real life Hedgehog is bad but her and a Hedgehog that lives, breathes, and thinks? Explain to me again how this is bad? I'm also a supporter of unloved characters; especially since they are usually part of "non-canon" medias. I have my favorites, of course. I also have characters placed in the spectrum of this and am generally okay with most characters. The only characters I generally dislike are Amy and Rouge. But the one I hate isn't even considered canon (yet is very well-liked among those know him; in fact, he's probably the Shadow of non-canon characters [unless that's Sally...]). Who do I hate with every fiber of my being? Scourge. The reason is simple. He reflects real-life assholes who cheat on women (I was a victim of this in the past). I could go on and on about how much I hate him but you know what? I won't. Because I've gone on a tangent long enough. I won't brag but I think I'm one of the most sane and open-minded Sonic fans out there. Am I stubborn and opinionated? Yeah, every fan of anything is. Would I start WW3 on someone for shit? Hell no. I love what I love and I hate what I hate but people's opinions matter more to me than winning an argument. :) And most of all, Sonic means one thing - he is my friend who I can count on, someone who is likeable enough to make many friends but so hated that he has just as many enemies. He is the role model we should aspire to be. Thank you for those who actually read this xD

Excellent Sonic Theory video! I aren't bragging, but I was that regular fan when the Sonic series gotten revolutionized with Sonic Adventure onward. I never went all weird and too complainy about character directional changes. I remember thinking it was interesting, and upon playing SA1 for example, I was just having a ball of a time. I seen flaws, but they never heavily bumped my enjoyment. I can go on, but all I'm say is, I just want good gameplay Sonic again. Not more stiff or loose controls. Well, Sonic Lost World had great controls. No more bad physics, and super glitchiness. Good gameplay with a lot of content, and variety is what I'm asking for. Also good unlockables, and replay value. Can even bring back Chao Garden in a big way. Or Wisp space garden thing. xD

The ending almost made me cry.
The thing about Sonic games and other media, is they've varied quite a bit over the years, and different aspects appealed to different types of fans. From the earliest years it had a bit of an identiy crisis at least in the outside of the games. 2 (3 if we count Underground) Different cartoons with very different tones. People like me, very first game was Adventure 2, and it was later I came to enjoy the 2d games as well, but I understand alot of players don't care for the 2d stuff and some don't care for the 3d stuff either, even if I like both I can understand that.
I think when it comes to other characters, the biggest problem in the games is, we see other characters' play styles not being fleshed or that the split focus in the development of the game could have been better spent refining just one style IE Sonic 06. Something Mania and 3& K showed is that you can have other characters but those other characters played very similar to Sonic himself. Even Adventure 2 showed us multiple characters working fine.
Sonic fans complain about something minor. (cough* Shadow has a gun even though we’ve seen people using guns in earlier titles like SA1 cough*) (cough* princes kisses an animal even though most of us fans remember a princes kissing a frog cough*) (cough* we see The wherehog and we get triggered because we forgot puberty cough*) (cough* we see Sonic die even though main characters die like in dragon ball z cough*) no stereotyping in any kind of way, but i always thought when I was a kid that people who like Big were gay. (don’t ask why)

I prefer Sonic Universe Sally over Archie Sally because.
1. She's fully clothed, making her appropriate for children.
2. She and Sonic are longer in love with her, but rather, they are friends/partners. This is good, because boys (who Sonic was made for) find romance icky and have little to no understanding of it. Having a cool female chipmunk fight alongside Sonic would delight so much more.

While I did enjoy the childish style of AoStH and the Genesis games, what stuck to me more was SatAM and the Archie Comics and i still read them to this day. If I may offer an opinion and I know many may disagree, but I still feel that of all the voice actors of Doctor Robotnik/Eggman, Jim Cummings is my favorite. I understand where this "return to the roots" is one of the biggest mystery, because everyone has their own interpretation to this problem . For me, as an example, I would love for the roots to be a platformer like the original Genesis games with some storytelling elements of Archie Comics, and (this is just my own personal preference) having our villain's name be that of Dr. Julian Ivo Robotnik. To me it makes it sound like he would be intimidating. I am not saying to get rid of calling him "Dr. Eggman" I can completely understand and see Sonic and the supporting protagonists using that to insult him or make fun of him. My point to that silly rant was that as a ptotagonist I would take the villain serious if he told me that he was creating the Robotnik Empire, if he instead said to me that he was creating the Eggman Empire I would laugh to the point my sides hurt because I wouldn't take the villain seriously.
