Can we just take a moment and applaud the production value of this documentary? It's amazing how accurate and to the point the acting and representation of the incident is.

I love how the guy they’re interviewing talks about how ‘crafty’ and ‘knowledgeable in the ways of the street’ the inmates are. Completely playing down the STUNNING incompetence of the guards. Just, wow.

Hind sight is ALWAYS 20/20, and I'm SURE that the guards wanted to convey "how smart" the inmates were, so that it made themselves appear to be much less idiotic.

My ex-fatherinlaw was a guard at max security prison, and when they took over that prison, they took him and 2 other guards, put them in a cell,and put other convicts, to protect them, because they said in all the years you have been here, you treated us with respect, and decent, so nothing happened to them,but other guards were hurt really bad,my wife was crying of course, but her father told he was scared, but it payed off treating them with common respect and decency,

I'm absolutely STUNNED by how many "Breaches of Protocol" happened at this place!!! If inmates saw THIS many mistakes being CONSTANTLY made, then it was just a matter of time before there was an escape!!!
The prisoner's actions initiated the mistakes. The mistakes didn't exist before.
I was saying the same thing. So many security protocols were violated.
Yea US prisons like to adopt the 'learn from ur mistakes' systems back in the day. They create what they thought was a great prison but find out inmates have nothing but time to scheme, find weaknesses & CO vulnerabilities to use against the system. After escapes the prisons fix the weaknesses that were exploited previously and when building new prisons they use the past to form once again the new 'escape proof' prison, only to find someone else is actually smarter than they are.
Funny part is a tiny magnet from earbud headphones can open most of these electric prison doors....

They actually tricked the prison staff into providing a motor vehicle they could use in fleeing. This has to be the greatest escape of all time. Not only did the mastermind outsmart the entire engineering design of the place he also outsmarted the way it was operated. Unreal.
Zaquan, You should watch the documentary about the guys who escaped a Virginia prison. Did you see the story about the guy in Texas escaping. It's unbelievable how he escaped!! Now a whole family is dead!! I hope the family sues Texas. I sued Oklahoma and won. They are responsible for my baby's death!! He was only 4 years old. 😢😭😢😭

As a now retired, career correctional officer, and yes, working in the Max, I am simply amazed at the repeat lax actions of the staff.
Basic needs are all these criminals deserve. Prison is more like a supervised holiday resort. Disgusting!!! University degrees, conjugal visits, and other privileges...really??? On our tax dollars? I know that we have DNA testing that needs to be done much more quickly so that those that are not guilty can be released. Keeping people imprisoned for ten, twenty, or more years is a waste of time and money... build individual runs for daily exercise. I cannot afford to join a gym or higher education, yet my tax dollars are paying for multiple degrees for these degenerates. They hide behind :finding God". Can we be that daft to fall for that???

These guys got out because the guards got sloppy. There are double checks in place that they failed to use often enough that the prisoners knew exactly who to compromise for this escape. If the procedures had been followed, these individuals would never have had the chance to even try to escape.
Death Row inmates don't want to die but they failed to understand that their victims did not want to die either. 👍

@IDK I don't think they should be free but certainly taken off death row they obviously don't want to kill anyone, because is they did want to kill who better than the men in control of keeping them locked up until certain execution.

The fact a gun was found in the cell of someone on death row after all this happened clearly shows that not nearly enough changes were made. I am certain the pay must be increased for the guards and training increased by a factor of a 1000 at least
I have watched hundreds of documentaries re: prison escapes and prison life etc. and this is by far the most elaborate & it’s insane to me that it actually worked… the guards let their guard down immensely & those Inmates took lots of time to collaborate this.. wow.

The acting 🎭 and production 🎥🎬 was purely amazing with the creation of this documentary. I’m a film student and plan on starting my own company creating short film/movies true crime stories particularly survival stories. This documentary and so many others really inspire me. I am thankful all of the inmates was caught. That had to be such a scary time for the community residents. And so many props to everyone who worked effortlessly to assist in their capture.

Not gonna lie that escape was on point. Granted they hurt people and it's horrible. The way they went about it was flawless in their time.
They could’ve hurt a lot more people though let’s be honest I haven’t got to the end yet but so far A few of them have actually stopped anything from happening that could be bad. You can’t really blame them for trying when they’re on death row can you how can it get any worse? I feel sorry for the guy that stayed behind and has the appeal because I can’t imagine that went very well

@@warriormanmaxx8991 no it’s funny because I have to jump in on this one because somebody really reacted to me saying that on a totally different blog, not going to lie is a very common phrase over here it doesn’t mean much to do with lying it’s just a colloquial phrase to say let’s be honest. For example I might say let’s not lie salt and vinegar crisps are better than ready salted. It’s rly just a common little phrase certainly in the uk. An American had a real freak out with me once when I used it, and accuse me of calling him a liar it was crazy.

I’m from VA(reside in Richmond). This escape essentially had the entire state on lockdown. I remember not using the outer gas pumps at gas stations because of this 🥺.

If that’s me, I’m eating trees grass and bushes lol. The story is though that he was freezing cold and called his Mother’s. And she convinced him to turn himself in. Canada doesn’t extradite people on death row, by the way. So he really was as close as it gets there, to full on escaping death row 💯% even if caught.

That place was built in the 70s, and it didnt cost no dam 80 million 😂😂😂😂, pre fab buildings. They build the jails the same way now.
The manhunt over 3 weeks to recapture 6 killers, probably cost more than the facility.
It might have been cheaper to up the guards salaries by a couple of bucks each!
No, the facility was designed incorrectly- as the many electronically controlled doors and checkpoints needs staffing around the clock, which consumed 1/3rd of the available staff at those positions alone.
Additionally, the administration felt that due to recent court victories in lawsuits, that the "ACLU was running Mecklenburg". In particular, they bristled at being required to give death row inmates 8 hours pod time (out of their cells) per day.

@@maryosgambler1 yeah, it's also much more expensive to execute people, very difficult for the families of their victims as it is very uncertain whether they will be executed or not, and when it will happen - and lastly, people are often unjustly condemned
It was nice to see that even amid savagery, some of the inmates recognized the nurse's humanity and did not allow the others to have their way with her.

My Uncle Ernie Fimiano was in that prison when it happened.. He was a Cintas account rep who delivered floor mats and replacement linens… After the incident Cintas offered to take the prison off his route.. He told them no way… it was the most exciting night he’s had in 27 years .. R.I.P. Uncle Bootsy

He also was a prison locksmith and said that he had made a key to every cell he had ever had and was smart enough to make and hide weapons in almost any place including the gun found in his cell after he was executed . They said he had fashioned a weapon from the metal scrapings that had fallen away from the toilet lets not be ignorant ourselves okay he had no sense @ the time of the murder but a stupid man he WAS NOT !!!

US prisons can be decidedly redirective places. Scholastic no-hopers can end up mastering trigonometry and calculus. In those restrictive environments they innately go for focus, they seek out the project, however innocuous and incontingent it may initially be.
imagine participating in a fairly well organized prison break that goes off without a hitch, just to get lost and get arrested at a laundromat less than a block away from the prison

Gerratano was actually released. In 2000 they ran a more accurate DNA test and his DNA didn’t match the crime scene. They forced him to make a false confession.

Yes, although I imagine that the inmate was probably motivated less by his conscience and more by the fact that an assault on the nurse (or murder of a guard) would have a major negative impact on his pending appeal.
Yep, I imagine that was to lessen the punishment after the great chances of getting re-captured.
Everyone has their moral boundaries. Most of even convicted multiple killers for example wouldnt hurt women or children. Child abusers and rapists get killed in prisons by inmates who believe its crossed their moral code.

I was born in and have lived in Richmond, Virginia all of my life. I, vividly, remember the "Briley Brothers" brutal killing spree...all three brothers were ruthless, deranged, cold hearted killers! I graduated from high school in June of 1978 and their reign of terror began in March of 1979. Our city did not sleep until they were arrested in Oct./Nov of 1979. During their 8 months of terror on our city they murdered 10 people...probably more but held responsible for 10. They showed no preference as they murdered men, women and children...young and old. The brothers made an 82 year old man watch as they took turns brutally raping his 79 year old wife and then they killed them both. They made a 5 year old child and his father watch as they took turns raping the 28 year old mother and wife who was 8 months pregnant and then they murdered the mother and father as the 5 year old watched and waited his turn. They raped and robbed a 23 year old woman as well as a 62 and 83 year old woman and her husband. They killed a well known and liked radio disc jockey as he took a smoke break outside one of our local bars. They did all this killing sometimes within days and weeks of each other. Two of the brothers received the death penalty and were executed by the electric chair one year apart and the third remains incarcerated to this day. The "Briley Brothers" forever changed our city and those of us that lived through it.

I think things would have been better if when the police had originally arrested them they didn't take them to the precinct, but took them out somewhere and set them on fire.

When I was a kid, I used to think all criminals were dumb people; people who were too dumb to follow laws. When I reached my teen years, I learned just how smart some actually are. Especially people who've committed elaborate crimes and those who outsmarted prison complexes. The prisoners in this doc. here made literal history when they escaped. Let this be a lesson to us all that we should never underestimate certain people. These people waltzed right out of a super-max prison front door without killing anyone, then leading police on a wild goose chase when everyone realized what happened. Talk about unbelievable...

As Salaam Alaikum. I used2 think everyone in jail or prison were bad guilty people. Innocent people don't go to jail, only guilty bad people. I have since learned better. Lots of Innocent people go to jail. There goes me by the grace of God. 🙏

The inmates were pretty clever, and the prison system seriously lacked security protocols. One thing they could’ve done is set up codes to use in conversations with other corrections officers to let them know that they were being held hostage.

I dont understand how death row inmates are allowed to congregate together like that.
Daily life for a prison guard is very boring. After a while they become complacent and lose the feel to follow protocol to the letter. To the custody officers following protocol is something they are aware of and really seems not all that necessary. This is what prisoners watch and wait for.

I think he just wanted to know if his plan would work, or just wanted some glory for himself that he outwitted an entire system just like the Pizza bomber incident. That gun he made before the execution and note "Smile" is a message. Though nobody knows what it really meant.

Here's a good idea - how about paying people a proper wage to have to deal with these prisoners. Was that part of the recommendations or did that get lost in the situation? You demand the procedures be adhered to but your not willing to pay people to actually instill those procedures.

Broke police makes it easier to get things into prison. One prison I was at near Detroit, most of the guards and other staff were from Detroit. You could get anything into that prison. You would order it like Amazon with next day delivery. No home made tattoo guns, we had real tattoo guns and real tattoo ink. People bought lotto tickets, every drug, some female cops were prostitutes and you could get some if you had the money.

It's actually sad that they were so institutionalised that they didn't know how to cope on the outside. They had to be very intelligent to come up with a plan like that. I can respect them for not hurting the staff and for not resisting arrest. Not many have escaped death row.
By the main guy staying behind, they executed a crafty plan to then just run like chickens with their heads cut off. Had the man chosen to flee along with them, he could've made it, while the gang distracted the police in a wild goose chase
People get out and realised that the world changed, they need to pay rent, and don't get their 3 meals a day.
This is why we Americans won't give up our guns. Things like Death Row inmates escaping into the local area never happen........until they do.

Willie Turner HAD an appeal pending..... staying behind to guard the hostages probably didn't win him any points in the appeals process. Despite a well thought out escape plan, you have to wonder about the intelligence of some of these guys.

Willie Turner did not have much formal education, having grown up in great poverty in Tidewater, Virginia. However, he did develop very unique gifts while incarcerated. Turner could fashion a dummy key for his cell lock just by hearing how the lock turned with a key inserted in it. He also designed and *patented* a new type of scissor blade called a "de-ending shear", doing all the technical drawings using what materials he had available on death row.
The patent number is 4,428,119 issued on January 31, 1984.
Turner also made a flare gun using a match and the cardboard backing of a yellow legal notepad in an abortive 1986 escape attempt.
I suspect he didn't want to go with the Brileys escape when he determined they were likely to engage in more bloodshed once they got outside the prison walls.

My brother is an inmate. He says it's easy to be a big fish in a small pond but not easy to be a small fish in a big pond. Meaning he had cred and a reputation in prison but in the real world he's no one. Sadly I doubt he will ever change.

The Mecklenburg six... similar to the infamous Texas seven... one of the most daring jailbreaks ever. I remember this episode like it was yesterday. Had they been housed at the ADX Florence, such an escape would be impossible.

I just read that the Briley brothers had another brother who was also a criminal and one of the Briley brothers had a son who is also incarcerated. What a f upped family. Their own father was afraid of them and locked his door at night. Wow!

Linwood Briley's son, Norman Laquan Ampy served time in prison. He became wheelchair bound and tried to hold up a bank while in his wheelchair. He died in April, 2015.

@Thao Brewster the break out plan was brilliant, considering 1980s policies, practices and technology. The post break out plan was not well thought out, but communications options (cell phones , internet) didn't exist then, so the getaway understandably not complex. Also, keep in mind that these cons were fully vetted regarding friends, associates, family, etc so usual sources of assistance were not viable and as a death row break out there was national coverage making it hard to hide.

I live in Virginia (close to Mecklenburg county) and was in elementary school when this happened. My grandmother was horrified, and wouldn’t allow my cousins and I to go outside and play. I was afraid too. Every time I went outside-with adult supervision of course-I felt like those guys were in the woods watching me.
