And if they where to send a raven for Ser Gregor Clegane, why not send a raven for an even better champion, the Queens own brother Ser Jaime Lannister? But that also has its issues, Tywin would never risk his eldest sons life in a trial by combat against Ser Barriston Selemy. The most likey option here is The Hound.
The mountain is just a brute. If the red viper can bring him down so will Selmy. Just Selmy isnt a idiot and would slay the mountain without the show boating.
Any man that fights likea knight will get mauled by Gregor. Barristan was not even remotely intellectually close to Oberyn in any realm. If he's fighting with a sword and an armor, he's dead. Plus no one is as agile and fast as Oberyn. Plus Barristan is old.

The most logical choice for Cersei and Joffrey to face Sir Barristan in a trial by combat would have been The Hound. Sandor was a member of Joffrey Kings Guard and an expert combatant. He regularly trained against multiple opponents and was as mean as his brother without the psychotic demeanor. Sandor would have been Cersei’s choice here

I was under the impression that trial by combat was a southern custom and was rarely practiced in the north. Particularly after the death of Rickard Stark.
If they were to name a champion which is absent such as Mountain, Ned would name Greatjon and we would read that how Greatjon absolutely clap the mountain.
It's sad cause Ned was ready to be killed for the truth initially. But then Varys told him to keep an open mind for his daughters, sp he decided to go confess. In his mind, there wss no option where he would die after that, since after calling himself a traitor, he'd be send to the nights watch. But he didn't know how much of a psycho and a non-obedient child Joffrey was. Trial of Combat was probably an option he never even would have thought he needed. And since he already confessed to being a traitor, tbat option was no longer left. Even if he yelled out in the last second no one would have heard him and Ilyn Payne would have still taken his head

Ser Barristan can definitely take Gregor, but would need to keep his distance a bit to prevent Gregor getting a hold on him. That would make the fight a bit more difficult for Barristan and frustrating for Gregor. But in the end, Barristan would need to be extremely careful against Gregor as any misstep could lead to his death. However, Ser Barristan is skilled to the extent that he could make light work and a public spectacle of Gregor. All he needs to do is wear him out like Oberyn did. Thank the gods he's not out for revenge for the rape and murder of his sister😂

Assuming Cersei accepts and assuming Ser Barristan does not step up Ned's best choice would be Syrio Forel. Cersei and many others would likely underestimate this choice and while it would not be a sure thing I think he would have a good chance of winning against any opponent.

At the Sept of Baelor sure he could pass for a commoner and no one would care but in the Red Keep? Has he been doing this for every court session or just happens to go there the day Ned asks for an audience? They're not just letting cloaked strangers walk in the front door. Also the Mountain is in the Riverlands fighting at this time.
