    It reminds me of Saints Row 2's NPCs, they didn't have daily routines, but there were enough NPCs interacting with each other, or had unique models and behaviours (alcoholics, elderly people with walkers, gang members would be chilling on corners or in parks, there were people in swimsuits on/near the beach, cops were chasing criminals, and they made snide, complimentary, just basic remarks at the player character about events that had happened in the story) all of these we got over a decade ago, but somehow can't be achieved literally 10 years later

    Wish they gave stand out characters like police, maintenance folks and a couple of citizens in each area unique schedules. Would create a nice immersion illusion making you think there’s more under the hood of all npcs while keeping the majority as simple wandering AI

    Why the hell did they do all this. I already new about a lot of this stuff as I followed cp since the first teaser trailer, but after watching all your vids I feel so jaded with this game. They destroyed what this game could have been. It’s wasn’t even half done. For the love of god the entire rich portion of the city is missing except for 3 mansions. This game wasn’t crunched it was gutted.

    The NPCs that disappear or transform from a large man to a slender woman when the player looks away are distracting. The NPCs that are nailed to the floor are bad once you notice them. The NPCs that spout the same verbatim dialogue every time you enter an area are the real immersion killers.

      I believe there is mention in 1.3 patch notes they fixed re-rolling npc appearance after looking away. I wonder if it works with save-load operation.

      Weird for me the despawning NPCs who are often clones of each other are WAY more immersion breaking than the ones who stand in place or have repeating lines. The latter are just normal for games.

    The problem with the generated NPCs is they sometimes get loaded out the second you look away, or for some reason, their appearance gets re-rolled in the blink of an eye. Other times, they want the crowd so dense that they can't help but have the RNG roll up clones of the same people in close proximity. The system just isn't well tested for the scope they're aiming for and really... they would probably do well just to dial it back a bit and leave more meaningful or stable things behind. Sure we get a little less up front, but it's clear the scope they were aiming for was a bit out of reach to begin with. Just like those 2D cars they have spawn in the distance, those just need to be removed completely, they look awful!

      Its the exact solution I would use when there is a massive memory limit to make it run, while having to use much too detailed textures/models. Loading them in on the fly, and destroying them when out of view allows to have varied crowds, while keeping within the memory budgets. Thats also why you can see clones appearing, the engine just has no free resources to create more variations, and then just reuses the same combination several times.
      The alternative is to spawn much less NPCs in the city (what the newer console patches do).
      They just went with too high quality models for a game that has to still run on the old console generation. A big planning and team coordination error. The poor ai programmer then came up with this sub par solution.

      @@vast634 Yeah, it's clear that they advertised and built up the hype a bit too early. This game was just not made for previous gen consoles, and really we can't expect it to ever get to that point. The best they can do, is offer people that bought it on those systems a free upgrade when they get the new ones. That would be the decent thing for the devs to do.

    My only issue with this is that it was too short! You should try to find more npcs like this for a part 2! :-)

    I agree that there are remains of NPCs with a full day schedule because in the 48 minute gameplay demo they said that each NPC will have its own schedule and life they obviously cancled that but there is still some npcs with it as you showed in the video.

      Nowhere did they say that npcs would have their own schedule and life they said "all living their lives within a full day and night cycle" which is exactly what they do.

    Right off the bat I instantly thought of the 48 min gameplay video from 2018. “Thousands of NPCs living their daily lives and tasks” like that sounds insane. You’re telling me these NPCs aren’t just clones? And actually all have their own apartments and work places?
    I knew it was too good to be true and kinda feel dumb for believing a game could be that in depth
    This area of the map makes me feel a lot better knowing it is somewhat possible, just maybe not right now for a huge city game, especially only having 4 years of real dev time. I’m just happy this area shows they tried at some point lol...

    in this regard rdr2 npcs are mentioned- and for good reason; their interaction and reaction to the players behaviour, reputation, appearance are reflective of the top tier work put into creating them.
    *however* the most underappreciated are the npcs of kingdom come: deliverance.

    I don't think it was resource intensive as much as it became too time dependent. The developers were making the NPC schedules but it seems they stopped because they were running out of time and short simple route destinations are much faster, most likely these kinds of NPCs were developed first and scheduled NPCs being created until time ran out.

      Same, I was really skeptical when they said that npc has routine programmed in a city such as Night City. The city is basically a mess so I was confused how they could have coordinated every npcs pathing.

      They upgraded NPC logic (especially for the new zone, I believe) for the 2.0 update and massively increased the CPU requirements. Although time was an issue, as it always is, I think people underestimated the bottleneck that previous-gen consoles had on the game's development. The game barely ran on old consoles. They cut corners wherever they could (there is a reason Todd and Bethesda didn't want to release any more games for previous-gen)

    There are also 1 shot NPC's, that play a scene once when you first time see them, and never reapeat it.

      @@Yusuke_Denton There is for example dialog between NPCs in hospital when you enter for the first time. They ignore each other every other time.
      There are Tiger Claws guys that harass stand owner when you enter to one of those mega buildings. Never repeat as well, so if you miss it, you miss it.
      In early release there was also road block by some junks that could occur only once, but now it happens more often.

    Thats true, the NCPs in Cyberpunk have the same structure as The Witcher 3, they are there just to create an illusion the world is alive but in the end they are just animated objects in the environment. Problaby they put this in the game as a base to the NPCs system to build over it something better, but (how we know) the game was released unfinished so even using a programing they already has as a base, thus the base is incomplete.

    Pacifica is just a metaphor for the state of CP2077. Massive funding for a shiny new project that was intended to rake in boatloads of money, which was then abandoned when it failed, leaving us to explore the remnants.

    I like the implication of the children waiting for a bus that never comes; still adds some character to the world. Like the city outright abandoned some districts or areas for whatever reason and now kids who want to go back to school can't; or maybe that stop is broken and the pre-programmed buses can't find it because it no longer shows up on the route. Also says a lot about the kids' home life too, that they just want to leave the park.
    Of course we all know the real reason is just that CDPR hasn't/didn't/won't implement a simple scene that continues this or alters this, especially given the lackluster state the game is *still* in...

    This is one of most disappointing parts of the game for me. NPC AI seems to be one of main things that hasn't changed in gaming for the past decade. No dynamics, no interesting behaviors, just walk here, disappear and repeat.

      AFlakeOfDandruff ! Red dead 2 has the best “reaction” AI, it’s amazing seeing some people turn and look at your when walking into a saloon, or when riding a horse through a small town people turn and look or say hi.
      GTA SA has the best random AI I’ve seen to this day. The amount of systems in that old ass game and how much madness can actually happen if you just let the game run for a few hours it’s actually insane. So many random street fights and taxi’s getting robbed by ballas, policr chases it’s all so good for a 20 year old game.
      Look up “standing still in GTA games for 24 hours” on TH-cam it’s a really interesting video, GTA SA blows 4 and 5 out of the water it’s a shame.

    I think that because old gen consoles they dismiss the 1000 unique npc daily routines (still no excuse for no daily routine at all). Releasing this game for old gen consoles was the worst decision that CDPR made. They make millons of dollars but they ruin their reputation.

    Interesting analysis here. Cyberpunk was built with RedEngine 4 and without a doubt if cdpr spent more time on the release and shipped to PC only first they could have done some innovative things with NPCs. I'm not a game developer but I did stay at a holiday inn once on a Monday night. Also it looks like they spread themselves thin by supporting old gen consoles. They should have dropped support for old gen consoles, focused on PC then optimized for new gen consoles. Maybe better management and developers would have helped, they have time to try to make the game better. The game can be optimized for old gen but many features would need to be removed. Also I run the game with an EVGA 3090 and very fast NVMe M.2 drive and the game still needs lots of optimization. It is an innovative game in a subtle way, they just need to tighten more screws.

    Imho the best npcs go back to 2016 from Watch dogs 2. They may not have a daily schedule but they have names, jobs, they talk each other or on the phone, you can (basic) interact with them, there can be multiple not scripted scenes with cops, arrests, gang wars etc.
    Then of course there was rdr2 but still, these two games remains the best in that matter.

      People like to shit on ubisoft but that shows what they are actually capable of for sure. I also really liked the watch dogs 2 npc AI they would take they're dogs for walks and stuff like that which I've never seen in another game.

    Base consoles limited memory are the restriction. Sure you bring up red dead redemption 2, but that game is mostly empty and low density environments. Cyberpunk is way too ambitious for the base consoles and the consoles are notorious for restricting dev’s creativity. For example fallout new vegas strip are supposed to have no walls, it only added because the console having tough time rendering the strip at once!

You think there isn't car/character customization, crap AI, horrible bugs, huge chunks of missing content, etc, because of consoles? Nah man, that was CDPR's fault entirely, hell they barely got the minimap to work with 1.3. The game is unfinished, there is no question about it.

    3:57 your theory is wrong, it's not that resource intensive if you optimize the whole thing. ( i.e swarm of NPCs wandering on the street instead of having one agent with one schedule )

      The wandering disappearing NPCs are also horrible. CDPR could have at least added a door opening animation for them all to appear & disappear in inaccessible areas for craft services in this Potemkin village 2077.

    All I can do is pray that CDPR creates official modding tools that come with all the code for features they gutted before the end, so we can clean it up and make a proper bitchin cyberpunk world to get lost in!

    Patch is out and its even worse then before. When a turret kills your car you can just drive away with a burning destroyed car. NPCs are even dumber then before. Had 2 crashes in 10 minutes with a 3080 and a 3900x. GG fixes. They seem to be completely lost with their shit. Incompetence on Wargaming level.

    The game could have turned out to be something amazing but its just a total shit show. The best way I can describe CP77 is Look at "Pacifica" its an analogy for the state of CP77. Basically in pieces, half way destroyed everything broken and ultimately was left unfinished. Its basically stated in the main quest, was I the only one that drew this resemblance?

    Agree that this is Witcher 3 behavior. But to be fair, almost all RPGs are this way. Mass Effect games, I don't think they moved from their stations. Also this can't be fixed because CDPR in no way will let the PC version outdo the console versions. The game is made to suck. And stay sucked.

    Why the hell are you playing in 3rd person? Terribly immersion breaking. Play in 1st person as the developers intended.

      I wish I could give this comment a lot of likes. I'm really really tired of all the people demanding third-person view or even that the game is completely reprogrammed in third person only. It's so ridiculous. First person allows for much more immersion in the game world.
