Thank you so much. First time homeowner and I am still a single gal. A handy man quoted me over $700 to replace these. Nope! I knew it couldn’t possibly be that expensive, but I assumed he would have to take the doors off. Wow. I am smarter thanks to you, and I am capable of doing this myself now that I am smarter 🥰🥰🥰
The weather stripping on my doors have all dry rotted on both the sides and the bottom. My late husband passed away 5 years ago and unfortunately I have no one who even seems to know anything about how to replace them. In my mind it didn't seem like a very difficult task but I didn't know where to start or what to do. I was too hesitant to rip off what was left hanging on them without knowing how to replace them. I have been looking at the sunlight coming in through the crack, feeling the cold air from winter blowing through and now feeling the warm air coming through and my AC going out. I decided that I was going to figure out how to do this myself so I found your video and could kick myself for waiting on someone else to do this for me! I can't thank you enough for taking the time to make this step by step video. Thanks to you not only are my doors secure now but I have confidence in myself that I can do anything I set my mind to do. I just needed the guidance that this video gave me! I'm so very thankful that I was lead here, my late husband never leaves my side ❤ Thank you again for helping me ❤
I am glad you did it! My philosophy Is, I can do it mess it up and learn, do it again cheaper than hiring someone. Sorry for your loss, I meet a lot of widows in our plumbing business that have to learn the things the husband took care of. It's great that you are doing it! Ross
THANK YOU for posting this! I’ve been sitting on this project for over a year- not sure why, as it only took me 5 minutes to get it done! Our door is lock-tight now!
Me as well! here it is almost spring time and have had the supplies way before winter! Sad not every1 wants to lend a helping hand not even the man of the house🤣🤯🤦♀️🤷♀️ js..just luckily I'm a self sufficient woman and grew up.arpund my dad and brother working on everything! #ripbrother14yrsgonetosoon
Thank you for this video. Maintenance came to check my door and said "that's just how the door sits and there's nothing we can do". It felt like a wrong answer but I didn't know the right one. Found your video and now know the door seal needs to be replaced. You made it look so easy now I feel like they lied to me and just didn't want to do the work that needed to be done.
Thanks so much for the video and all the details! Yes, it's simple, but now I know what to get, how to get it on the door, when to stop my pre-drilled holes, when to stop drilling in the screws (before dimpling) and how to trim the edge for the correct fit. I would have been guessing at all those factors, or just plain doing it wrong, so while it is a simple fix, you've prepared me to do it correctly! This is so appreciated... especially from this 65 yr old female! (No disrespect to older folks or females!) Thank you so much for sharing this video! Your explanations were extremely helpful! BTW, I have three other exit doors that also need the seals replaced. They're all steel doors, just more narrow. Will the same seal be fine for them as well, or do I need something different from a "front door seal"? Thank you again!
I'm glad you went for it! As far as the seal it should work, I would read in the description on the package. If you got it off amazon you are able to ask the seller of the product questions and they should let you know. Thank you for watching!
thanks for the visual help .. didn't think it was complicated but always appreciate a person with knowledge n experience DEMONSTRATING as you did. thanks
Thank you for a great video, my handyman said there's no hope for my back door, That I need a new door but I'm not financially able at this time, because I had new living room and kitchen floors install in today and that hit me pretty heavy. So I'm going to still try to install the new door seal on the bottom of my door like you did hoping it will keep the water from coming in. 🙏
I put off replacing my front door seal because I thought I could find an exact replacement. After almost 30 years, I convinced myself, they probably don’t make exact replacements after so many years. Thanks for sharing the video!!
Good easy job. Only one thing i would change, and that would be using a small block of wood when tapping the new piece in. Causing no damage to material. Nice easy fix..Look forward to your next project..
Very good video. Can you link the HD weatherstrip? I think when I replace mine, I will fit it to see how much needs to be trimmed, mark it, and cut it in my miter saw then slide it in
You got me thinking I could do this myself 🤔 mine has been broken for almost a year and right now flies are driving me crazy. I’m making a trip to Home Depot today.
I had water intrusion after Hurricane Ian. This is exactly the info I needed to DIY a fix as handimen will not be available for quite some time. Thank you!
Hello. I just saw this video and want to thank you. Mine has been in place for at least twenty years and I realized that the poor condition it's in is probably how spiders have gotten in. My questions to you is, can I install it without screwing it in place, and just calk the outside and inside? I have a metal door and an inadequate cordless screwdriver. Thank you!
Thanks! Great video! I have the same issue on my side entry door to my garage. I have been putting off the repair because I couldn’t envision exactly how to fix it. Now I can do it! Thank you!
Thank you very much for showing us how to do this. Today I tried sealing my door after seeing water from the rain ... inside the threshold of my home. Don’t like the look one bit, so this week I will have To go to my L.wes orHD and get me one of those door sweep. I appreciate this a lot. Thank you.
I think they have the stick on type on front door to avoid the lip and screw look. I was kind of wanting to go with that again. Hard to find. But thanks for the tip how to remove old stuck on.
Thanks for showing how it’s done. I would have put the screw a in and then cut off the excess because with the screws holding it in place I think it would be easier to cut then chancing knocking down off the door
Single gal here. I bought the type that does not need screws, and water still comes in the corners. It is my second one I buy cause I didn't do it right the first time, but I guess I didn't do it right second time either. 😭 Is there a sealant I can buy to plug in the ends??!
The original seal gasket that fits into the grooves on the bottom of the door are readily available at Lowes and Home Depot. You have to take the door off the hinges, but I think it's a far better seal than the vinyl EZ U-seals.
That is the one I got today but to be honest after watching this video, I would rather get one of those. I really don't want to take the door off. The door is wood though, so would have to find one different than white.
You should always put the screw in the lowest part of the channel because then later on as it wears you can lower that thing down on the bottom of the door
@@swissmiss221 The "channel" he's referring to is the slot the screw goes in. Instead of having a little round hole for the screw, there is a slot, so you are able to make slight adjustments up or down without drilling a new hole. I guess if somebody did not leave enough room to adjust it down, they could also use a drill bit or Dremel to lengthen the slot a little.
So I just installed my new seal, but when I go to open the door, it is very tight and difficult to open. Does the bottom of the seal just need to break in a little bit? Any suggestions on a fix?
I hate that an exact match can’t be found. I had the same one you removed. Don’t like that white one where you have to drill holes in the door. Hope I can just find some rubber under door gaskets. The job looks easy enough but it still ends up to be harder than it should as I’m not handy w/cutting & working what I consider to be intricate projects with my hands.

$700??? Seriously?
I'm glad you DIY. What an idiot trying to take advantage. I understand as well being a single woman.

If you have a wood door make sure you silicone caulk the outside so that rainwater does not just seep in and sits on the door promoting rot.
That is GREAT advice - thank you!
How would you go about that? I’ve caulked the bottom of a shower and around a sink but not sure how to do it here. Thank you in advance.
Its a channel door sweep, I don't understand where you would be adding the caulking? Along the top edge of the sweep?
@@chef329 it’s a “U” shaped piece. Water will run down the door and into the “U”. Caulk all along where the top of the “U” piece contacts the door.
You can use pca glue to coat it I guess

I've purchased those sweep seals before from Lowes. They last about 2 years in high traffic areas of the house, then the rubber strips break off.

What size screws did you use?
I'm not sure, they came with the seal.
I would caulk the exterior joint to keep moisture away from the bottom of the door.
That's a good idea!
How about measuring the door before you start?!!!! Good interesting video anyway, thank you!
