I have a lot of thought about this. When I started wood working all I heard was how everyone hated sanding. Fast forward a few year and I completely get it. about a year ago I had a large flat surface to sand on both sides. When I was done my hands were done too. I had very uncomfortable numbness in my hands that lasted for two days. That's when I understood the value of a good (expensive) sander like the Festool or the new 3m. I have finally decided with all the sanding I do It is worth the cost. I'm leaning towards the Festool orbital but not sure if I should go 6' because of the availability of the paper, as mentioned. The idea of finishing sanding sooner makes me think it's worth the extra cost and the inconvenience of buying paper. I guess I should look into the paper and what's available Thanks for the video.

Fwiw there are a ton of 6” auto style sanders with the top paddle switch. They are pretty sweet and more of them are becoming electric which makes them accessible to woodworkers.

Thanks! Those top paddle switch do seem to be the best, and the air powered ones are in every non-home wood shop I have been in. I agree it is awesome they are becoming more available.

I like the abranet paper or Norton, Diablo is not bad but goes quicker. I have a big 5 inch Bosch that I love that has a very little vibration. Probably my favorite sander of all time. Have the cordless Makita it’s all right. It’s definitely not a use it all day sander

I have heard the Norton is really good. I have used Diable in the past but I agree it seems to wear out faster. Good to know on the Makita that it isn't an all day sander. I find as I get a little older that the less vibration matters more and more to me :)

The best out there is the 3M Cubitron also the new 3M Random Orbital sander seems to be the best out there as well. Light weight, powerful, variable speed, along with premium dust collection ability where it connects to the Festool Vacuum too with a purchase of the adapter.

Can you use a 5inch sandpaper on the 6inch sander?

Not really. It will fit with hook and loop, but the holes won't necessarily line up and then the on covered part of the pad will get destroyed.
