A tremendous task indeed. I remember from the summit presentation that they had to keep most of the scales as part of the ''low-poly'' (low-poly in quotes because the model turned out around half a million polygons if I remember correctly) , so they can deform properly during animation, which might not be possible if they're purely part of the displacement map.

Actually watched it yesterday, and I remember thinking something along the lines of "I wish scenarists and film directors were as skilled as visual artists" because the movie just felt like a pretext to throw millions of dollars worth of high quality visuals at your face but otherwise was boring and lacking everything else. I actually already nearly forgot what the story was exactly about. Am I alone to feel like people forgot how to make great movies nowadays? I mean yeah the visuals are nuts, and as a character artist, I can appreciate the quality and effort that went into the visuals. But is this enough?

Question, how do they take this billion faced sculpture and animate it? I have never understood that, do they use some kind of cage or do they have a low res model and subdivide it and shrinkwrap it around the high res model. Do they bake out displacement maps and displace the surface on a low res model. Most programs can't handle that many faces, only zbrush does it well.

Basicly what happens is they retopo the sculpt since 55 million polligons are not riggable or animatable or even viewable with 10 rtx 3090 But when you retopo the mesh does not have the same detail as the original. So what they do is bake the details into a texture and apply the texture to the low ply version which is then rigged animated and finally composited

@@dyfx9788 So the low res mesh is still millions of faces then? So high res that the fine detail can just be displaced with a height map. Because when I attempt to render sculptures in blender I've had to subdivide the mesh and wrap it around the sculpture to get as close to the original sculpture as possible. Or maybe even a 10k model meant for animation only has to be subdivided and given a height map to be displaced.

@@DanIel-fl1vc yes what happens in they have about 10 different versions of the model. the obviously highest detail non retopo one (which is unusable) then there is the one with as much detail as possible (probably 10 million verts)then there are the ones with less detail and less and less. the ones for close up shots people needs to be individually sculpted. but the one for wide shots can just be replaced with a height map or a normal map i think.

Did anyone else notice that Kong had two copies of identical eyes? They were in several close ups and I found it incredibly jarring. Seems strange that they'd make such a amateur mistake.
