Hi Sun, For everyday online banking activities such as PayPal or a checking account, would a designated Multi-Account Container in a hardened Firefox, w/ 2FA be sufficiently secure, in your opinion? Or would you recommend going further & using Tor? OTP Auth? or maybe even Mullvad VPN for added security?
Hey, Multi-Account on hardened Firefox is a great start. What protocol are you using for 2FA (email and SMS should be avoided when possible)? No need for Tor or a VPN as these would not add much security unless you are on a network you don't trust. Have you watched th-cam.com/video/Smbd17quDhw/w-d-xo.html
@@sunknudsen For 2FA, most institutions I've dealt with use a one-time code sent via email or phone after the password is entered. (Sorry, I'm not well-versed yet in the tech acronyms.) In your experience, have you found that the OTP Auth 2FA app (or Signal) is compatible with online banking ? (Hope my question makes sense!)
Most banks I have experienced only offer email or SMS 2FA which is ironic as it isn't very secure. Using OTP Auth would be better but isn't always an option. Signal being used for secure messaging cannot help in the context of 2FA. Hope this helps!
@@sunknudsen Yes thanks, that helps bring clarity to the online equation. We know where institutional improvements are needed vs. the individual security steps which are currently available.
Consider using a browser extension like uMatrix or uBlock Origin to disable unnecessary third-party (i.e. tracking) scripts from these websites, because most of them don't have enough defenses in place to prevent malicious JavaScript injected in their pages from stealing your data. And even if they do, they usually whitelist tracking domains so your data could get stolen anyway if one of these tracking domains is compromised. If you want to learn more about this subject, look into "XSS", "Content Security Policy" and test websites with observatory.mozilla.org/ (disclaimer: you will discover that, sadly, most websites have a very low score such as F and therefore have very bad clientside security)
You express real satisfaction when you remove Safari, but you never mention why. Perhaps you have another episode for this but can you give a short version of why are you do not like Safari? I’m a Mac user in Safari is all I use. But I use firefox on rare necessary occasions.
I just stumbled on your channel and I am hooked already subscribed and binge watching your videos. I've been using Firefox as a second to Safari (bc of some sites compatibility) for years and never knew most of this. I just made the switch and its now my default browser in all my devices.
LibreWolf beats Brave at privacy and ads. I use to only use firefox until they went political along with several others, even Reddit came out saying some crazy stuff. So crazy how so many open platforms are starting to silence people. Driving normal people to go darker in Open Source products. I don't want the company's tracking how I live so they can figure out how to convince me to buy their products. I struggle with my will power on Amazon already.
The fact that the founder of Firefox and creator of JavaScript left Firefox to build a better privacy-preserving browser Brave indicates that while Firefox may be better than Chrome, it in no way protects user privacy as well as Brave. Firefox was flawed and that’s how Brave came to be
Yes if you want low ram consummation and Brave if you have a lot of ram resources, want no ads without downloading a ad blocker (ad blocker extensions makes you use more ram), a fast browser and a browser that can use the Chrome web store.
Firefox is a privacy nightmare. The settings you check in the menu to ensure said privacy don't actually do what they're supposed to. Take fingerprinting for example even if you check strict tracking protection on the desktop version go to about:config and look for privacy.resistfingerprint it will be set to false...soooooo......... As of 8/27/20 they have eliminated the about:config for the mobile version which basically eliminates privacy and being non monetized. Other privacy issues such as indicating in the settings you don't want autocomplete/search suggestions as you type is ignored (turn it off and try typing amaz it will auto complete to amazon.com), the push for you to add everything to top sites or home page and to sync your tabs all while burying addons under several layers of menus. And it's ugly. They've turned private browsing to the same purple as TOR to try to mislead users into associating it with TOR, among a whole host of other d!@k moves. Make no mistake they are out to monetize you, your privacy is the last thing on their list.
Feel you... but what better options do we have? Mitigating browser security vulnerabilities requires a huge amount of resources. Btw, Firefox on iOS is essentially WebKit... so I would avoid it for privacy. Actually, I would avoid smartphones in general for privacy. See th-cam.com/video/TAPYn6FC5t8/w-d-xo.html.
Depends how you define privacy. If you are not a target, a hardened Mac can work. If you need additional privacy/security, I would recommend using Linux/Ubuntu. If you need event more privacy/security, I would recommend a used ThinkPad X1 Carbon (see www.qubes-os.org/hcl/) running Qubes OS. If you need ultimate privacy/security, I would recommend looking into specialized hardware such as Purism.
Hey, great question... I personally don't use uBlock Origin (I don't block ads). That being said, the project has a great reputation and its JavaScript blocking feature is very powerful when used properly (although very inconvenient). I haven't tried Decentraleyes, but the project is intriguing. Will report back on the privacy guides once I have time to dig into the project.
Is it advisable to add all google based apps in a separate container as well? As google also tracks other cookies using its apps right? Also how can one enable such privacy measures on a smartphone ?
I'm a little older then most of your viewers. Is it possible for me to try and follow along in the program you are explain? I can't write quick enough to keep up. Thanks for your work.
what about safari, brave and opera browsers? are you going to do any follow-up videos with security in regards to Big Sur Os? Btw in the newer version of Firefox DNS is automatically checked! What about Ublock Origin? I hate ads especially on youtube and other sites
Personally, I don't bother with deleting history/cookies because it also disconnects me from several websites I use on a regular basis. For example, every time I close my browser and re-open it to check my Gmail account, I have to open my password manager, put in the credentials of said account, go and grab my phone, input the SMS code I just received (2-step verification), and then I can log in. I have to do this through different websites, every time history/cookies are deleted. I'm used to closing my browser on a regular basis (because sometimes I'm gaming and I want minimal stuff in the background hogging resources) and this can become a veritable pain in the rear to do all the time. So if you're like me, leave these two options alone unless you're in an unsafe location or need to share your device with someone else.
Curious: how does the Containers extension compare to just using the built-in preferences > security > cross-site tracking cookies & social media trackers options? (btw: thanks for your helpful videos!)
Hey Jason, containers are significantly better at compartmentalization. In the context of a given container, all (first and third-party) cookies and data only apply to the container.
I was thinking to make the switch from Chrome to Firefox for a long time. This video gave me the final push... 2 weeks on Firefox and not missing Chrome at all. Thank you! Keep up the great work
There are quite many web applications (e.g. twitter) that I login with my google account. Should I put them inside the container that we created for google?
07:05 Do Not Track can ironically be used as a datapoint for browser fingerprinting, lowering privacy. Some argue that the fact websites can choose to ignore this header + the fingerprinting datapoint mean DNT is actually more harmful to your privacy than beneficial.

See th-cam.com/video/EiDtomF41qY/w-d-xo.html. That being said mobile is not the best for privacy. Have you watched th-cam.com/video/nK76EKvburA/w-d-xo.html
Welcome back to Firefox. 🤓
Yeah, that's nice but we're all going to throw it in the toilet now.
Wait why what happened?
I followed to the end. One question, setting up Gmail. Do you put it in a container too? Also, how do you set Firefox to use Google maps?
Firefox 💪🏼
Wow...... That's a long video but it's worth it. Got everything needed to keep privacy mode on. Thank u....
Pleasure! Lots to cover... and the privacy guides series has 39 other episodes now... welcome to the rabbit hole!
Well this hasn't aged well.
Right!!
Thanks. Stumbled across your channel and am enjoying the security centric content. Keep it coming. 😊
The fact that the founder of Firefox and creator of JavaScript left Firefox to build a better privacy-preserving browser Brave indicates that while Firefox may be better than Chrome, it in no way protects user privacy as well as Brave. Firefox was flawed and that’s how Brave came to be
I agree the story is intriguing. Have to look into Brave again.
Hey what about Edge and Brave? It would be nice a versus between these theee (Edge, Brave and Firefox)
how about brave browser? please compare and bring the review on that.
Thanks for the suggestion. I confirm Brave in on my research backlog. 🤓
Brave isn't as powerful as Firefox
Thanks for all the tips! How do you think Brave stacks up against Firefox? Both in terms of privacy and usability.
Haven’t looked into Brave in a while. Will report back once I have a change to try it again.
Yes, please do report back on Brave, Sun!
welp not anymore!
Hi, do you recommend Firefox over Brave Browser? Thank you :)
Yes if you want low ram consummation and Brave if you have a lot of ram resources, want no ads without downloading a ad blocker (ad blocker extensions makes you use more ram), a fast browser and a browser that can use the Chrome web store.
@@lagboat Even with 10 extensions firefox uses less ram than brave.
I love Firefox, but I don't understand why you can use Chrome or the new edge That's just Google Tracking out and Microsoft tracking in
what search engine do you prefer? DuckDuck Go or Google , I prefer Google, everyone collects your cookies thats part of the scam
@Leif I want to be Elected , Alice Cooper
Excellent, one of the best Videos that I have seen.
All videos should be like this.❤
Firefox isn't the best anything anymore dude. This vid didn't age well
Great video! played @ 1.5x speed and secured my browser @ a blazing fast pace XD
What would be the best laptop for privacy thanks
Depends how you define privacy. If you are not a target, a hardened Mac can work. If you need additional privacy/security, I would recommend using Linux/Ubuntu. If you need event more privacy/security, I would recommend a used ThinkPad X1 Carbon (see www.qubes-os.org/hcl/) running Qubes OS. If you need ultimate privacy/security, I would recommend looking into specialized hardware such as Purism.
real privacy is when you use linux instead of osx.
Just made the jump to linux (OpenSUSE). Couldn't be happier.
OSX IS EASIER TO USE
Hey Sun, if I'm using uBlock Origin, would that also be sufficient for tracker protection? And should I also be using Decentraleyes?
Hey, great question... I personally don't use uBlock Origin (I don't block ads). That being said, the project has a great reputation and its JavaScript blocking feature is very powerful when used properly (although very inconvenient). I haven't tried Decentraleyes, but the project is intriguing. Will report back on the privacy guides once I have time to dig into the project.
Firefox is garbage....
Is it advisable to add all google based apps in a separate container as well? As google also tracks other cookies using its apps right?
Also how can one enable such privacy measures on a smartphone ?
This didn't age well
Wait why?

I'm a little older then most of your viewers. Is it possible for me to try and follow along in the program you are explain? I can't write quick enough to keep up. Thanks for your work.
I #boycottMozilla.
Good to see Sun always opening Facefox on Firebook browser
Firefox sucks
What about AdGuard extension? Would you recommend using it?
Really good, requires little better computer than ublock origin, also blocks bad sites
No thanks, I don't need a browser that crashes every 5 mins.
what about safari, brave and opera browsers? are you going to do any follow-up videos with security in regards to Big Sur Os? Btw in the newer version of Firefox DNS is automatically checked! What about Ublock Origin? I hate ads especially on youtube and other sites
No way, DNS over HTTPS is checked by default? uBlock Origin has a great reputation. Thanks for your feedback. Will keep in mind for future episodes.
@@sunknudsen yeah on version 83 firefox I was doing the setting like in your video and it was already checked
@@sunknudsen please do a follow up we are now in the 100's of Firefox
Thank you! Keep up the great work
Congrats on switching! Humbled to have helped with the push. This is why I am pouring love into this channel. 😊
How does the Brave browser compare to Firefox on the Security and Privacy front?
Great question... need to have another look at Brave.
Wish you had also done a video on how to import passwords and stuff from chrome and then linked it to this one. Yet, I must say hats off
There are quite many web applications (e.g. twitter) that I login with my google account. Should I put them inside the container that we created for google?
What alternative do you recommend to manage passwords? LastPass?
Bitwarden
07:05 Do Not Track can ironically be used as a datapoint for browser fingerprinting, lowering privacy. Some argue that the fact websites can choose to ignore this header + the fingerprinting datapoint mean DNT is actually more harmful to your privacy than beneficial.
Good point... that being said, I like signalling that I care about privacy... Ironic isn't it? I wish DNT had better adoption.
