  • In this video, I’ll show you how to easily add light rays to an image by drawing them with the Photoshop Line Tool.
This technique to add light rays to an image in Photoshop is a basic one, but you can easily refine and improve it. Each line you draw on the image becomes a light ray once blurred using the Radial Blur filter. You can then use a layer mask to control where the light rays are visible on the image.
The tutorial also uses Photoshop Smart Objects to make editing easier. If you aren’t familiar with these and what they can do, the following video will help: • Photoshop Smart Object...

Very useful Robin. I’m not sure why you needed to move the rays to the centre of the image before moving it to the position in the trees. I’ve not seen this technique before, it looks very effective.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. The reason we move the rays to the centre of the image is because the radial filter works from the centre. If we don't have the rays in the centre, the radial filter will bend them when we apply it.

@@NerdlabsSci Yes, it can make a mess of the result if you forget to do this.

Very interesting. It would be nice to see if this technique could be adapted to Affinity Photo. I admit I've not spent much time with the vector / shape tools in Photo, since I'm usually just doing final adjustments to images, but offhand I didn't find anything that works quite like this PS tool. The Pen tool might work, but a little playing with it proved (more than anything else!) I need to go read the tool's documentation. LOL

Yes it can be done in Affinity Photo but it's a little different. There's a tutorial on my website explaining it lenscraft.co.uk/photo-editing-tutorials/light-rays-affinity-photo/

@@RobinWhalley excellent, thanks. I was close but my Pen tool misunderstanding was the problem. Good now.
