    Additional information for reference: This video was recorded internally on each TX. Lo-Cut: Off. Noise Reduction: Off. 32 BF: On
    The TX were not connected to the RX (as indicated by the blinking green LED)
    No post processing was added during editing.
    Both TX Gain set to +9 dB
    Wind muffs were used for plosive taming. Frequency Analyses were conducted with no Wind Muffs attached.

      if you're connecting the tx to the rx, what will be your gain setting for the rx and will the tx still be set on +9 gain?

      dji mic does not record at 32 floating bits internally, it only records at 24, to record at 32 you must use the transmitter

      @WayneRECs Have you tried using a lav with both transmitters (the same lav for both) to be sure it is just the internal mic? If they still sound different it might be something else.

    To anybody that's saying they can't hear the difference...
    Are you listening to this on your phone/laptop speakers or are you listening to it through a proper set of external speakers?
    There is a MASSIVE difference in audio quality between the 2 mics which I don't think any onboard device speakers are able to properly output.

    Toytally agree with Wayne. This is a widespread problem. I have three of the new TX's (two purchased with a the RX and a previous one as part of the Osmo Pocket 3 creator kit). There is wide variation between how each of the three sounds, with two being 'dull, muffled' and lacking in HF response. The other is 'thin' sounding. There are also audible artefacts at times during recording, to the point that it sounds as if some NR was in use, but in fact, was not. It was turned off. Also, if you do a test recording of a 1kHz sine wave, every few seconds there is a 'blip' in volume, as if some kind of auto compression was in use. That, by the way, is not an academic issue - it would affect a recording of a violin, or any continuous tone. I reported that to DJI weeks ago. Curtis Judd has also tested a set and found such serious issues he suspended his review to give them a chance to fix it all... they say a firmware fix is coming, but I suspect there are hardware issues in play here too. Possibly poor QC of the mic capsules.

  • @dann_craig

    i think an even larger problem that no one is talking about is the lack of timcode on a "pro" device. i was suprised when i got mine to not see anything in the reciever menu, documentation, and even called support and got no answers. the rode wireless pro has it, i wrongly assumed the mic 2 would as well.

  • @RandumbTech

    FYI - Curtis Judd just published a video about his malfunctioning transmitter as well. This may be a MUCH bigger problem than anyone realizes - at least with the first shipment. Somewhat reminiscent of the first DJI Action 3's that got shipped with terrible close focusing.

    WOW - really good catch here. I assume running the same lavs into either one would produce the same sound from both - if its an inbuilt mic problem on the transmitters themselves? We just received a set today and I'm not in love with the sound quality out of either, if I'm being honest.

    My biggest gripe with the DJI mic 2 is the Bluetooth codec used on third party... I did a test on my channel, and the audio quality is subpar when used with mobile devices. Great unit for 1st party usage, but bad for 3rd party. The audio cuts after 9khz when using bluetooth

    • @ericd7709
      @ericd7709 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ataaaaas says he gets 16kHz on mac mini bluetooth.
      If it is like BT earbuds, the source and target broadcast to each other what parameters (codecs, bit-depth, stereo (M/S) modes, bit-pool, sample frequency, bit-rate) they each support and negotiate. Some devices are rather 'conservative' and play it safe (for range & reliability), or are old enough to not support newer expectations.
      Some Qualcomm devices support "aptX Adaptive" which includes " aptX Voice" for mics.
      "aptX Voice supports 32 kHz sampling audio with a smooth 16 kHz frequency response"
      Apple tends to prefer AAC. DJI use AAC in recorded files - they might well support AAC over BT?
      You might find a BlueTooth dongle that works better than built-in BT.
      Might need 'OTG' on a phone/tablet?
      BlueTooth is plug-and-play, but doesn't give best results unless both sides support the same tech.
      On Windows, BlueToothGoodies have a 'tweak' app that lets you see how you connect, and an 'Alternative A2DP' driver that lets you control the connection. Not sure if it is just output, or mic input, too.

    Great video, Wayne. I did some tests because I noticed the darkness of my DJI Mic 2 when compared to the built-in microphones of my Osmo Pocket 3. I wasn’t sure if the issue was the capsule of the DJI Mic 2 or the transmitter itself. I connected my Rode wireless lav 2 to the DJI Mic 2 transmitter and noticed immediately that it was brighter and crisper. I also did a side-by-side test with the Rode wireless lav 2 connected to both the DJI Mic 2 and the Rode wireless go 2 transmitter. They sounded identical to my ears so to the best of my discernment it seems it’s a capsule issue with the DJI Mic 2. I think that’s why it seems almost universal in the comments of people that have compared the Rode wireless pro to the DJI Mic 2 that most everyone says the Rode sounds better. My current work around is plugging a Edutige ETM-001 TRS mic to my DJI Mic 2. It sounds great and still retains the compactness element. I hope DJI does a better job with its capsules in the future.

    • @WayneRECs
      @WayneRECs  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      IMO, these built-in mics on these transmitter units should lean brighter to offset bass frequencies from people's chests. If it is a widespread capsule issue, I'm not sure how DJI would fix it, especially as many would not be able to self identify if their unit was defective. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. My units def sounded the same with external mics connected.

    Whenever there is a mic comparison video and you guys say we need to put on good headphones to hear the difference, I often can't really hear much if any difference between mics, so I'm obviously not an audiophile. But this time, I could hear the difference even on my cheap computer speakers.
    I've watched a few DJI Mic 2 vs Rode Wireless Pro comparisons (David Manning, Peter Lindgren, Potato Jet, Tony Northrup) on TH-cam and I noticed the Mic 2 often sounds more processed, dare I say even slightly muffled compared to the Rode and sometimes even compared to the Mic 1. It's like even with the noise cancellation off, it's still doing a bit of noise cancellation or some sort of processing. I'm not sure if this is because of the mics, the recorder, or the deadcats, but it is there. This could be related to your issue. Let me know what you think. Keep up the great work!

    As a video production team, this is definitely a great test and information you provided. Thank you so much for the effort in this video.
    I will add: we're currently living in a time where ai software is being implemented anywhere possible. It's possible that there is some AI tech in the mics software. This then causes each mic to evaluate your environment differently, resulting in a different sound. The mic could be making that choice for you natively in its software. (even with noise cancel off).
    In any case, raising this issue could be the spring board to a great firmware update. Thanks again ✊

    Thanks for the video. Now I understand the "problem". Another TH-camr also pointed this out (he sent me the link to you), but I couldn't identify the problem. Because he only used one of the 2 microphones and simply says it doesn't sound good. With you I understood the audiophile circumstances. But you actually already provide many explanations yourself as to why it won't be crucial for most content creators (including me). I am also a musician, own a studio and am a filmmaker. I edit every interview, so it doesn't matter to me which mic I use to boost the highs or cut the mids. Since the human voice can sound "mushy" or very high-pitched and comes from the body in very different ways, the matter is not a problem for me. But still good to have understood the problem through you. This basically made me aware of a problem that I will continue to observe (also with other sets). You have a great way of explaining things in an understandable way. Do you think DJI can fix this with an update?

    Not a big deal for my use. I was using an Action 4 with Rode Reciever plugged in which is probably fine for most people but my models handle the action camera and the wire or adapter can make it awkward as I have to instruct not to knock it off or break it. The DJI Bluetooth mode solved this for me and works great. For my S52 I use both mics merged so the difference in the mics is not an issue for me but I agree that much variation is not what I would consider pro but to be honest I always saw these devices as Prosumer and not full Pro devices. It is good information but like you said the majority of people will not care about this. I love how I can switch from Bluetooth to receiver connections on the fly so I can use both for the S52 and Quickly switch modes and it pairs to my Action 4 on the fly. Opening the case and everything just works. Also, all the info on the receiver is amazing. I missed backups on my Rode Go II a few times since I had no idea it was off after an update, The DJI shows me everything it is doing. Even the Transmitter lights are more informative than my Go 2. Based on all the reviews The Rode Wireless Pro is closer to a pro-level device with Timecode, more storage, better quality audio, locking plugs, etc but for my use, the DJI was an easy decision. Even the storage limits are no issue for me as I only do 3-5hr shoots and I dump my devices to 2 backups after every shoot so I can format and be ready for the next shoot.
    If I was doing weddings, 2-person interviews, and shoots for more than 8hrs I would pick the Rode hands down it is what event videographers crave. DJI mic 2 will do those things but if you do not need the flexibility of the DJI mic-2 it is a no-brainer to pick the rode.

    Thanks for the info! You are right - DJI should not label them “pro”, if your tests reflect a quality control issue. I ordered the mic 2, and I don’t think such differences will matter much to me (not a pro). I will have to see when the set arrives - my use case would be one mic per person, and since every voice is different, I am doubtful of any significant impact to the outcome.

    I’m more interested in the overall sound quality of these mics. Every video I watch comparing these to the Rode Pros, the DJI Mics sound like crap in comparison. I want to know 2 things: 1- can you EQ the mics to sound better in post, or, is the quality so bad it’s just unrecoverable? 2- how does the recording sound with a lav?
    Side note- super huge giant bummer that there’s no locking mechanism for the lavs. Big win for Rode.
    I’m bummed because the form factor, screen, and features have an edge over Rode, but if the sound quality is bad, then who cares about features?

  • @CinePals
    @CinePals 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    There's definitely a difference. Truth be told in your video, when listening on speakers, it was harder to pick up on. I think it all depends on what the content is and where it's being delivered/shown. My TH-cam co-host has a DJI Mic 2 that came with the DJI Pocket 3. Immediately I thought it sounded odd and just assumed it was the noise-reduction software. After Curtis Judd mentioned issues with the DJI Mic 2, I investigated turning off the noise-reduction on the Pocket 3 using the Pocket 3's interface. Still didn't sound great. But, my ears are more attuned to weird stuff like that. Most people don't care. Bugs me though for sure. That said, even on Curtis Judd's video, when he illustrated there was an issue, I wasn't 100% sure what he was talking about initially as he just showed test samples and didn't spell out the problem.

    @waynegrayson4530 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Before you pointed it out, I didn’t really notice a difference, yes there is one but it’s minimal. I think the real issue is what you’re expecting from a budget, user friendly bit of gear and that people are confusing it with actual pro microphones. Yes, the DJI mics are good quality, yes you can use them for certain levels of professional work which I do BUT only as an all in one, one person budget kit option.
    The whole kit is around $500 AUS. I’m not expecting top of the line high grade, perfectly balanced pro gear for that price, maybe that’s just me but if I hired a dedicated professional sound recordist for one of my high-end projects and they turned up with a DJI Mic kit as their primary bit of gear…
    Well like I said I use these types of ‘semi-pro’ units for my budget solo shooter kit as they give very good (not high-level pro) results, and they are very easy to use with lots of handy pro-like features. But never in a million years would I expect them to be top of the line. As an audio professional I’m surprised you did. Not trying to be rude I just think this is expecting way too much… if you bought a top-of-the-line bit of kit like a Shure or Sennheiser etc for $4k or something then that’d be different story.
    On another note, is it just me or do the new transmitters look really tacky? The see through plastic revealing the inner gadgets is so high tech, for the 1980's that is.

    • @AndreSjoberg
      @AndreSjoberg 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Problem is that DJI is using the word «Pro» in their marketing (and wisely *not* putting it in the product name though ;) - Did a test on these on my channel for the bluetooth connectivity and quality connecting it directly to a smartphone with bluetooth, and that is *definitely* not pro sounding - also you can’t even do the 32 bit float internal recording when connected directly to a smartphone, that was a bummer indeed.

    Thank you for your review.. I’m a pro video shooter but bought these for more casual, personal projects. I agree that they are far from pro spec. However, that said, I don’t think they are too bad. The low cut filter is terrible. The file naming is confusing. (Unfathomable) But the audio is probably going to be ok for my needs and I didn’t really hear much difference in your piece until you pointed it out. Once you did of course…. I have a zoom f2 which seems to be just easier all round if you just need a stand alone recorder with 32bf.

    I understand the frustration at the base level, but my experience with the original DJI Mics was that everything I recorded with those ended up going through an Rx post workflow before they ever hit the timeline… I guess I just factored that in as part of the process for saving so much money on the original kit - these aren’t professional mics no matter how they are marketed. And after Rx, those recordings sounded great, used in several commercial gigs for quick run and gun shooting, no issues. IDK, I just think for the price DJI is giving us quite a bit, but their goal is stay pack leader of the disposable cheap Audio Units - to get people away from mounting shotguns on the camera and opening up opportunities for better audio at all levels of play.

Also, I wonder if the new DJI lav mics are going to run into a similar problem. Thanks Wayne

  • @nathanksimpson
    @nathanksimpson 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    This difference is big enough to be noticable. Even non-matched-pairs of the same microphone will sound closer than these two IMO. This is too different. Although I wonder about what they sound like with lavs plugged in. If they can be matched when an external lav is plugged in then maybe it's not so important. If you want to be really "pro" about it you would want to see if a plugged in lave like a DPA 6060 or Sanken COS-11d sounds good on these. Microphone choice for lavs is a thing in pro location sound. That's what I'm curous about. In the pro area even corporate videos are moving towards hiding lavs, and you can't hide the DJI TXs on a button plackett. Honestly I don't really consider anything 2.4Ghz pro, and most other sound professionals wouldn't either because most of these systems cannot be frequency coordinated. So by design they are excluded from most pro sound mixer bags except for some utility purposes like maybe an IFB or camera hop in a pinch.

    • @AndreSjoberg
      @AndreSjoberg 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My guess would be that the difference comes from the mic membrane/construction, so lavs, if the lavs are of good quality, would probably defeat this problem - it’s a problem with the material/construction of the physical membrane of the microphone part most likely

I was about to grab these after rejecting the Rode Wireless Pro based on their bad reception through a human body. The Mic 2 seems to have better wifi, and the usability seems to have cooler features. I watched a couple comparisons, and the DJI Mic sounds really bad compared to the Rode. The Mic 2 is better in the Rode in almost every way, except for the most important way - THE SOUND. I also wasn't impressed with the noise cancellation. A lot of artifacts. One question, does the noise cancelation work with a lav?

    Good job and testing finding this out! It will be interesting to find out how wide spread this is? I have a pocket 3 which came with one mic, I ordered another mic on the 17th when it became available. I also have the new RODE wireless Pro set. I'm now retired, but worked for a major automotive company in NVH sound and vibration. I'm used to using Head Acoustics, LMS, and B & K professional equipment that cost tens of thousands of dollars. And of course, this type of variance is unheard of, but I guess it should for as much as it cost. I've always wondered at the consumer few hundred dollar price point, how accurate, and if they can control the calibration tolerances? Sadly, maybe not? Hopefully we will find out. I commend you for testing and bringing this to light. Like you say, for the majority of casual users it won't matter, but for some of us, it will bug the hell out of us!

    Hey man, just listened to this - made my own video today on my channel about another issue, that you can’t do backup recordings when connected with bluetooth directly on the phone, but I just bought the receiver/mic-combo - but had to get my headphones out and re-listen to your examples again … and again … and re-listen .. and yeah, there is definitely an issue with a difference between them, but I did not hear it first time just using the speaker on my phone, until the third time played it back, slightly louder, suddenly I could here the difference - on headphones I heard it right away - for *most* people, listening on their phones, this might not be a big issue, but if this is even bigger in terms of quality differences between mics it might be a problem in terms of getting solid reliable quality from these mics - in my own tests using bluetooth connection directly to the phone the difference in quality is *stark*, and just placement differences in terms of how far from the mouth I placed the mic it’s a huuuge difference just being 10cm furter away, and add on top the bluetooth vs dji receiver quality difference this might not be the «killer» everyone thought it would be - but more testing is needed and I’ll do more tests myself as well next couple of days and drop another vid on the bluetooth vs receiver differences monday or tuesday - thanks for this thoug, gonna see if my mic is as clear as your clear one :)

After speaking to the dealership they advised DJI don’t want items returning to dealerships and instead want to look at them themselves.
