Drama I agree that’s not that much in today’s world, but these guys are pretty smart. I’m a huge Dbacks fan and Archie Bradley and jake lamb live together in Phoenix, for years. The house can’t be over 500k. They make millions but are smart with it. After all, most baseball players are very well educated. Baseball isn’t a stupid mans game.

Obmot58 P in theory this should work but in states like CA this becomes less likely due to high income taxes, property taxes, cost of living and the price of homes. Also, as someone who is familiar with renting in CA, i can say that it is not “passive income.” Rent is soaring high which leads to scams, bad tenants or people abusing landlords ( i know someone who had rented to a family to later find out 26 people were living in a 2200 sq ft home- and it was trashed)
I have to chuckle. While I was NOT drafted, I did play 1 year of professional baseball about 50 years ago. I had no agent--most of us didn't. In fact, I never knew of any player from my era that did have an agent. As for a signing bonus, the scout that signed me paid for my dinner after a non-professional game in which I played. And let me give you a clue: the restaurant had golden arches. The year I played, five of us shared an apartment. All of us had to have another job just to make expenses. AND the bosses at these jobs had to be REALLY understanding due to the schedule of games meant you sometimes would be gone for two or three days at a time. Do I regret playing? Not at all. It is still one of my fondest memories of my earlier years.

A good friend of my fathers was drafted in the 2nd round by the Cincinnati Reds and received a whopping 35K, which was fairly good for the time. He’s still working at 60, enough said.
Leo Cardenas was a 6 time all star shortstop who played for the Reds back in the 1960’s. The last I heard, he was working in a gas station in Oxford, Ohio.

Yeah dude.. I don't think there's any pension from sports lol. Basically in sports you play until you decide to retire from the sport then your checks stop coming.
Sky Rise MLB, NHL, NFL and NBA all have player pensions.
Some players who sign big contracts also defer money to many decades after the expiration of the contract. I know ARod, Trout, Harper, guys like that have millions in deferred money that they won't receive until much later from contracts that they signed while they were young. This helps to insure that they have money coming in when they are older. I am aware of pensions in the major sports leagues but I think you have to have a certain amount of years played at the major league level before you are vested into that pension program. Organizations probably have group plans that players can opt into when they are active just like most large businesses that offer health insurance. Once you're done playing I think your health insurance is up to you at that point.

Ya Matt, we were all young and dumb at sometime. My baseball talent couldn't even get me off the bench in 10th grade more less get to MLB. But I remember buying stupid things when I was in the Air Force and that is not even close to someone getting drafted. Today I'm debt free and I plan to stay that way.

Great video. It’s amazing what kids aren’t taught in schools. Depending on your lifestyle, you will need well north of $1M. Interest rates being as low as they have been. If you are getting 5% ROI you would only be getting $50,000. AND THAT GETS TAXED. So good message to all out there.

The skill set you need to get a big signing bonus is not the same as the skill set you need to make your signing bonus stretch. Not every player majored in Econ at Stanford made their college team as a walk on and then still reached the Hall of Fame.
I mean Mike Mussina did that. But he's the exception.

Best idea he had, because his career has been a disaster. Royals experimenting with him in the big leagues is about to come to an end. 7.5 not very well spent by the team I love.

Great info Matt, thanks for sharing. Helps with perspective on cost of living. Life ain't cheap, especially if you have a family. And good advice for investing. That applies to everybody. Make sure you're saving a lot of money every month. It's hard to save $1M even if you have 40 years ahead of you.

My son played three years of college football (two years FBS and one year FCS). In spite of only playing two seasons with one team and a single season with another, he established what has turned out to be lifelong friends - some even played or still play in the NFL. Is the camaraderie in professional baseball similar? Did you make close friends who remain close?
Hindsight is 20/20. It’s just a blessing you got paid well to play a game. I work at Best Buy and I hate it. I could’ve made the bigs too but I hurt my shoulder. I was the star third baseman for Polk High back in the day.

My cousin was drafted in 2017 and signed for 750K. He went in the 11th round to the D Backs but they gave him a solid offer to give him incentive not to go play at South Carolina. 20 years old now in his second year and playing A for the Kane County Cougars.

And it's not just a young guy phenomenon. I graduated law school at 34 and bought a Rolex. Dumb, dumb thing. But it was a sense of hey, I earned it. But definitely not a Jaguar. But ibwould have done same thing. Lesson learned I am sure. But like many people, you more than likely were thinking about potential earnings.

Yes if you put it all into dividend and index stocks
1.6M isn't much especially after taxes but still the smartest thing you could've done was, with you 900k work it up to 1M and then put it into a mutual fund or something where you collect 5% interest a year. That's 50k/year and whatever you don't use REINVEST back into the fund. That's how I would retire with 1M.
This. You can live on 50k pretty easy, but let's say you get a job and work for even 5 years...maybe you make only 50k a year at your job spend none of it, you now have $200k you can buy a pretty nice house, in CASH, and owe nothing on it but the taxes. Now your $50k a year interest off the mutual fund is only needs to cover food/water/lights and the property taxes, the rest is all just spending money. Having a paid-for house is the key to easy, comfortable retirement.
Yeah this is a preety safe idea, OR you could invest in stocks if you know what you're doing and make 10x that! Your solution is preety good tho
@@lucasborja3797 mutual funds are stocks. Going straight stocks is reckless, might as well just go to vegas and put it all on red. Index funds are low fee and as close to guaranteed returns as you can get. 99% of fund managers cant beat the market. I'm not a fund manager. I'll take the index and beat 99% of the fund managers.

I have a few questions that would be great if they got answered. 1. How do you become eligible to be drafted by an MLB team? 2. Do u need to have a visa to play in the MLB or minor leagues? I am Canadian by the way if u can factor that into the answers of these questions
I never signed a signing bonus or anything. But I knew 1 person who made it to AAA (I think) for one year. He lived with his parents during the off season and did odd jobs. For his birthday he asked for food gift cards so he didn’t spend cash during the season on food lol. This is funny to hear bc I always thought back then like “man this guy is cheap” but honestly he was really smart.

First minor league appearance he strikes out the side, which is amazing however, we will see how good he is when there are better scouting reports and hitters see him for a 2nd and 3rd time. Hope he has great success.

If you ever do decide you want to retire young, just holler at Bobby Bonilla’s agent to get you a short contract with whichever team. If it’s anything like Bobby’s, your family would be set for generations! lol. It’s just amazing how much he’s getting paid/will get paid. I wouldn’t be surprised if the agent is set for life after that one.
Does the players union have any retirement benefits?
I had this conversation with a co-worker 20 years ago: can you retire off a million dollars? Back then T-Bills were paying 5% I think. I said yes because that would be $50K a year. He said no. Mind you, he was making $25K a year at that time. His argument was that $1M would not be worth $1M in 20 years. I guess he was just learning about NPV. I told him that he did not have to spend $50K year. He only makes half of that now. Spend half and invest the rest. He stuck to his argument.
I've mentioned this before. Your videos would be much better if you would simply eliminate the reflections that show up in your background. Your viewers can see your windows reflected in your jersey frames.

Probably one of the wisest things you did was buy a house. Where I live a average house is a million bucks and we are not talking about some Beverly Hills area. Just a small town near a big city. Real estate has and continues to be the best investment.

I live comforably off 17k a year, save the rest up. At 500k and picking the right funds you can make 10% a year, I know of 2 that advertize gaurenteed over that. Id need to look them back up since that stuff is sketchy but mutual funds can do that from year to year. Assuming you spend the rest you get 50k a year pre tax with that half mil. Look up dave Ramsey. I trade options so I dont care about those but he constantly goes on about the 10% he get year to year.

@@skydragon3857 rent is 823 a month. Most of my expense is that. 10k for that, 3k for transportation and 4k for food and utilities. I dont spend on anything else.
buying a house as a 21 year 1st round pick is not a smart investment. almost guaranteed it was in San Diego and he wanted to live the cool life. wiser decision would be invest in a mutual fund and draw interest off of that. live off the interest and work in the offseason if you must. I have life insurance policy for 500k and it would replace my salary 50k/year for 20 years before dipping into the principle.
Here's a rough estimate on what you would need to retire off of to live a average life style
Let's use a rough estimate off 60,000k per year. My state is 77,000k so it depends on where you live obviously normal person works 55+ years in the work force at a full time job (16-18 tends to be part time or low pay) so 60,000 × 55 3,300,000 so it live a average lifestyle in the U.S without needing to work a day in your life your signing bonus would need to be higher then 4,000,000 due to taxes (Also dependent on state income taxes)

Yes you get per diem in the minors, just like in the majors. Although like in the majors, it's only when you are on the road and not everyday. Pre game/post game meals are also provided

I saw on a Braves game the other night that you have to have 10 years MLB service. Then the pension was around 100K/ year. If you can get 10 year in you should be in pretty good shape for life.
@@MrOldrock1 That is 'full' pension there are other milestones to get partial pensions etc which is still pretty good money...the baseball union is extremely strong and has worked out great deals
A radio personality in Cincinnati who played for the Reds said 5 years you get partial retirement.
