Carly Beth's actress went all in for this episode and it's great. Goosebumps usually had lousy kid actors so Kathryn Long really stands out. Apparently she became a theater and dance teacher and ballerina after she quit acting. Its a bit sappy but the ending of Carly Beth learning to love herself is really sweet. When we see her again in Haunted Mask 2 she's wearing the duck costume her mom made for her which is cute. Really really love this episode.
Carly Beth was one of my childhood heroes. I remember making a superhero named "Scary Beth" based on her who used different masks for different powers.
@@matthew_natividad I mean I was a kid and I sort of dropped the char after playing Dead Head Fred, a game where that's exactly how the main char works.
I like this message. It’s like when people get pushed so far over the edge after being bullied to the point they genuinely believe all of the negative things said about them that they end up changing for the worst, metaphorically turning into a monster. Lashing out and scaring everybody. Thinking your old self, the real you, is dead. The ending was perfect because rediscovering self love is exactly how you overcome that monstrous rage inside. Yeah Goosebumps were cheesy looking back but that’s seriously some great writing.

I do like the message of being yourself and not trying to be something you're not. A lot of the time insecurity itself can make you a monster and can turn you into the very thing that you hate. A lot of people don't realize that.
The mask salesmen, if I remember correctly, hates himself and wears masks to hide his face. The masks end up becoming warped and changed until they become the ones you see. He essentially was telling Carlybeth that being what she's not will only bring misery and no one will truly love her for who she is. Also Chuck and Steven once put a dead octopus on her head and convinced her they were prowlers about to break into her house. The fact Carlybeth ONLY wanted to scare them while going on that mental breakdown of hers is truly amazing.

This was the initial spark that began my obsession with horror. It's honestly a travesty kids don't have anything that's made for them like this anymore
@@derickbowne8633 totally, the concept of a mask literally taking over you is terrifying! Its simple and effective. I honestly feel like this special aged really well. As someone who was routinely scared in middle school and high school because people liked my reaction to being snuck up on, Carley Beth is justified. People would come up behind me and jab my sides and they laughed when i screamed and jumped. I had such a strong fright reaction. It all changed when i sucker punched someone in the face after they scared me. It was a fight-knee-jerk reaction i didnt mean to do, but the scares happened less and less when the threat of being punched was on the table. Theres a difference between a few little “boo!” Scares and being constantly on edge because you never know when someone is about to assault you. If you swing on instinct, good for you. Make those that would scare you scared in return. Carly Beth is justified, needed a bit of guiding, but totally justified going ape-shit
W-why are you that sensitive to a little boo? My God, grow a spine! Edit: And knowing it's coming, how the hell are you afraid? Seriously, knowing that it should be coming should make it A LOT LESS frightening. So glad I was never like that, I just...wow. An older kid at my neighborhood traded me this DVD for a bootleg copy of GTA III, cus his parents wouldn’t buy it for him. *_(I was somewhat of an internet pirate)_* Gave me doggum nightmares, but absolutely loved it! Still my all time fav Goosebumpy movie, thanks for the nostalgia drip bapa! 💉💦
Getting the new Goosebumps holographic raised cover paperbacks at the book fair was up there next to the “cross your eyes” optical illusion books, good times
The fuzzy pencils and gizmos galore were grand. Bookmarks of every type. I recall always hunting for dinosaur books and those about ancient weapons, swords.
RL Stine and his goosebump books got me into writing short horror stories as a kid. Which led me to writing lyrics and my passion for music I have until this day and horror. 90’s babies unite Long live RL and GB
I had some of the Goosebumps ooze stuff as a kid and one of the containers was that mask, but it glowed in the dark, and it would absolutely scare the crap out of me when I'd randomly wake up at night and see that face glaring at me, glowing, in a pitch black room. Good times!
I had such a love/hate relationship with this goosebumps episode when I was a kid. I loved watching this over and over again as a kid, and it didn’t scare me at all UNTIL the masks started floating and chasing Carly Beth 😭 this episode triggered some sort of primal fear of floating disembodied heads for me that is still around to this day
I love that papa goes over goosebumps, this one in particular I loved as a kid. So much nostalgia washes over me while watching this man who looks like he could control fire.
We had a Goosebumps haunted mask when I was a kid. My dad wore it for Halloween one year when we went trick or treating, and it covered so much of his face the neighbors thought he was our teen brother or something. (He has a smaller build for an adult guy.) They started offering him candy so he wordlessly started opening one of our extra pillowcases when we went up to a door. We got such a huge haul that year, so that mask was my favorite prop we had for a while.
Oh my! When my little brother was just born, I would go around trick of treating for him saying that he was sick but I was collecting candy for him since he couldn't. But then, one Halloween, I was actually getting him candy, he was just behind with our parents while I was running up front. I asked for some candy for him as well and opened his bag and as I walked away to do more trick or treating, I heard adults scuffing and saying, I bet she just wanted extra candy. I wasn't a huge kid, but I was chunky but not fat but it still hurt me. So I stopped in my tracks, waited for them and handed the bag over to my little brother when they came walking up and glared back at them. Don't remember their faces, but I do know they pissed me off and really hurt my feelings. I was already self-conscious about the pudge I did have.
Hey Mr. Papa Meat aka Hunter, I know this hasn't much to do with the video, but have you seen/heard of a show called From? It's on MGM+, which sucks, but the show is amazing and the horror is super fun and fresh. The premise is that these people get stuck in this small town in Nova Scotia, and at night, these human-looking creatures come to attack them (that's all I can give away). The concept too is super fun and interesting and I figured you would like the show. Would love to hear you talk about the show, especially since season 3 is about to drop in a month, and the last season ended on an amazing cliffhanger. Definitely worth the binge.
Got hooked on this show after watching the bus scene on YT shorts. Few shows nowadays scratch the niche of horror and otherworldly mystery like from. Wish papa would do a video on it. Can't wait for season 3!
Would love for him to see this and review it. I’d watch papa review a fresh dog turd. (I don’t enjoy horror really, but when papa talks about it I’m somehow fascinated.)

I can't remember if it was goosebumps or AYAOTD, but the episode that ALWAYS got me was the one with the haunted uncle's basement. Dude gets rewarded a brand new bike by pushing his bully down into the cellar and locking it, letting a demon eat him. Then his annoying sister calls for him, and he just. Smiles. Then the episode ends.
I'll be completely honest There was this one german Goosebumps books that left me a bit traumatized as a kid At least one of them did I think It was a book where it starts with a girl waking up burning to death Before she wakes up again And throughout the book she tries to live her life normally Before she realizes her neighbour is a ghost They end up becoming a friend the book makes a huge deal out of making you like the Main character And then the books ends with her finding out that her and her family all burnt to death in the beginning of the book because of a fire that broke out in their basement on accident And it ends with her realizing she's dead and then joining her parents in the afterlife And that this character who you spend all book liking with dreams and aspirations dies For some reason this childrens book smacks you in the face really hard with death and grief
The scene with the floating masks chasing Carly Beth gave me nightmares after I saw the special for the first time. I really loved Goosebumps so I wanted to watch it but every time after the first time seeing that scene I had to cover my eyes.
Yo, I bring this show up to everyone who liked Goosebumps and AYAOTD. The Haunting Hour rules, it's so good. Don't be fooled by it being a kids show. Haunting Hour is messed up, most episodes end with the protagonists dying or meeting some horrible fate. Like I can't believe they got away with some of it, like the Pumpkinheads episode. The ending of the Scarecrows episode is unsettling af. "We are the hollow men. We are the stuffed men. Leaning together. Headpiece filled with straw."
YES The one with the brother being an alien and the weird video game zombie ep?? The haunted ice cream truck and the shark in the pool I swear the shark in the pool made me hate swimming pools and still to this day I imagine sharks in pools lmao
I must have been like 8-9 years old, but i remember being at a sleepover where i cried and ran to the bathroom or something because I got so scared of the Goosebumps episode "It Came from Beneath the Sink!" about a killer sponge.
There was an episode of Goodebumps where some kids find a mirror in the attic, and their reflections want to replace them. The concept of being replaced and no one knowing terrified me.
Let's Get Invisible! I also liked that episode and book! I always like the idea of doppelgängers or similar entities, personally think one of the scariest concepts out there.
My favourite episodes hands down. I watched it almost a decade after the initial airing and I think that was the sweet spot for when the retro vibe added to the creepiness without it feeling too old.
When I was a kid in the 90's I had every single copy of Goosebumps available. They were my pride and joy. Goosebumps single handedly taught me how to enjoy reading.
Hey Hunter, my Coworker scanned the QR code sticker you sent to us lovely Patreons. Unfortunately I have now lost my job, my family, my cat, my monkey, my dog, and my left pinky. Worth it 👌
As someone who has had hallucinations and paranoia since childhood, I think the girl is schizophrenic. I was like this as a kid and in my mind people were bullying me and singling me out but they actually weren't. It's like it's in her perspective. I love Goosebumps.
The Haunted Mask was always my favorite episode growing up and still is to this day. Unfortunately Kathryn Long who played Carly Beth decided to leave acting in the early 2000s and didn't keep much of a public presence online. But luckily she recently did a podcast on TH-cam a few months ago talking about her time on Goosebumps and she still looks great and even pitched a pretty cool idea for a Haunted Mask III.
The lead guy from Ghost Adventures made one similar (not quite like this but has actors that tell a story) called The Haunted Museum. Might soothe the itch for something similar to Goosebumps!

This special scared the living shit out of me as a kid, and I refused to wear a mask because of it, I'd literally start hyperventilating because I thought it wouldn't come off lmao. This was the initial spark that began my obsession with horror. It's honestly a travesty kids don't have anything that's made for them like this anymore
@@derickbowne8633 totally, the concept of a mask literally taking over you is terrifying! Its simple and effective. I honestly feel like this special aged really well. Halloween is one of the few things that hasn’t really changed much over the years. It ages better than the new goosebumps episodes… lol

Edit:
And knowing it's coming, how the hell are you afraid? Seriously, knowing that it should be coming should make it A LOT LESS frightening. So glad I was never like that, I just...wow. I think you get the first prize for being the most scared person on the planet!
😈
The intro reminds me of the old Jontron goosebumps and are you afraid of the dark specials, so nostalgic I watch them every Halloween

The fuzzy pencils and gizmos galore were grand. Bookmarks of every type. I recall always hunting for dinosaur books and those about ancient weapons, swords.
every year i would get at least one new goosebumps, and the newest Guinness Book of World records, i still have the years 2006-2012
I was OBSESSED with the wax museum book, that one, the bee and vampire books were constantly missing from the library bc i had them 😂
The shop keep kinda scared me as a kid as it's later revealed his current 'face' is also a mask, and his true self is what's corrupting the masks. :o
RL Stine and his goosebump books got me into writing short horror stories as a kid. Which led me to writing lyrics and my passion for music I have until this day and horror. 90’s babies unite
Long live RL and GB
I rewatched goosebumps a few years ago. And it HELD UP BIG TIME. I loved every episode. What nostalgia! Next up, Are you afraid of the dark?
I NEED that “the throw up girl” shirt ASAP 😂
I had some of the Goosebumps ooze stuff as a kid and one of the containers was that mask, but it glowed in the dark, and it would absolutely scare the crap out of me when I'd randomly wake up at night and see that face glaring at me, glowing, in a pitch black room. Good times!
I often forget that Hunter, even being an OBEAST of a man, owns a barn, barn cats, ducks, and a donkey.
You made me Google OBEAST
I had such a love/hate relationship with this goosebumps episode when I was a kid. I loved watching this over and over again as a kid, and it didn’t scare me at all UNTIL the masks started floating and chasing Carly Beth 😭 this episode triggered some sort of primal fear of floating disembodied heads for me that is still around to this day
There is an episode of goosebumps that still pops in my head as one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen.. i know it’s just the trauma.
Lol thats great 😂
Glad to see someone else looking forward to season 3!!
Would love for him to see this and review it. I’d watch papa review a fresh dog turd. (I don’t enjoy horror really, but when papa talks about it I’m somehow fascinated.)
Absolutely amazing show. 10/10
In my country it's also on netflix! But only season one sadly, it's strange

Hunter, UNIRONICALLY YOU re the new goosebumps. Everything about your channel is Spooky-Esque and we all love ytou for it... From the moment i saw "jawbreakers" ed edd and Eddy spoof you made, it has been apparent. YOU are the new king of spooky, handle the crown with care.
I remember this one! I also am not sure which show it came from, but it was an awesome ending.
@@TheMegaCake I had to look it up, was AYAOTD. Good ol canadian horror

I ABSOLUTELY remember that episode!! Scared the crap outta me as a kid. It IS from AYAoTD, and it's called, "The tale of the Dark Music!"
@@shawndashno6022 THE MUSIC! That's right, the damn RADIO!
That's are you afraid of the dark. The creepiest part of that one is that goddamn doll that the spirit talks to him through at one point.
I'll be completely honest
There was this one german Goosebumps books that left me a bit traumatized as a kid
At least one of them did I think
It was a book where it starts with a girl waking up burning to death
Before she wakes up again
And throughout the book she tries to live her life normally
Before she realizes her neighbour is a ghost
They end up becoming a friend the book makes a huge deal out of making you like the Main character
And then the books ends with her finding out that her and her family all burnt to death in the beginning of the book because of a fire that broke out in their basement on accident
And it ends with her realizing she's dead and then joining her parents in the afterlife
And that this character who you spend all book liking with dreams and aspirations dies
For some reason this childrens book smacks you in the face really hard with death and grief
Ghost next door is the title
I've had that book as a teen! One of my favorites ❤ Camp Slither, Camp Cold Lake, ect.

Goosebumps is good, but one called haunting hour is one that really scared me as a kid and it's still a kids show. unhinged asf
Don't think about it was so fucking good though
Yo, I bring this show up to everyone who liked Goosebumps and AYAOTD. The Haunting Hour rules, it's so good.
Don't be fooled by it being a kids show. Haunting Hour is messed up, most episodes end with the protagonists dying or meeting some horrible fate. Like I can't believe they got away with some of it, like the Pumpkinheads episode.
The ending of the Scarecrows episode is unsettling af.
"We are the hollow men. We are the stuffed men. Leaning together. Headpiece filled with straw."
YES
The one with the brother being an alien and the weird video game zombie ep?? The haunted ice cream truck and the shark in the pool
I swear the shark in the pool made me hate swimming pools and still to this day I imagine sharks in pools lmao
I must have been like 8-9 years old, but i remember being at a sleepover where i cried and ran to the bathroom or something because I got so scared of the Goosebumps episode "It Came from Beneath the Sink!" about a killer sponge.
13:33 "You were really freaked eaught."
I remember this one so well, saw it multiple times. Was the best one for sure.
And I remember the other mask special where that boy keeps putting on his mask and it makes him an old man
Was just about to post this, bugs all crawling in his hair..messed me up lol
My favourite episodes hands down. I watched it almost a decade after the initial airing and I think that was the sweet spot for when the retro vibe added to the creepiness without it feeling too old.
1:51 I keep forgetting that hunter lives on a farm
The mask store guy is also the guarantee on a box guy from Tommy Boy, and I can’t not think about that scene whenever I watch this episode.

As someone who has had hallucinations and paranoia since childhood, I think the girl is schizophrenic. I was like this as a kid and in my mind people were bullying me and singling me out but they actually weren't. It's like it's in her perspective. I love Goosebumps.

That’s not the Goosebumps music though. That was from Are you afraid Of The Dark. And the Haunted Mask scared my sister when she was 6.
YA DON'T SAY
The Haunted Mask was always my favorite episode growing up and still is to this day. Unfortunately Kathryn Long who played Carly Beth decided to leave acting in the early 2000s and didn't keep much of a public presence online. But luckily she recently did a podcast on TH-cam a few months ago talking about her time on Goosebumps and she still looks great and even pitched a pretty cool idea for a Haunted Mask III.
You should review R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour series.
