    An excellent demonstration of Matt Fussel's oil pastel technique: he uses strokes and swipes to build a painting, he never touches the paper with his fingers or with any blending tools. He paints with oil sticks as oil paints. He is a graduated and educated professional illustrator with enormous teaching experience, he knows perfectly well what he is doing. Here he used Canson Mi-Teintes paper, which is his mostly used paper for both soft and oil pastels. This paper is perfect for his loose, "impressionistic" style, which he is pursuing when working with oil/soft pastels. He places a big emphasis on "values" - which is the American art term of luminance scale - rather than the actual hue of a color.

    You need a more opaque oil pastel, such as Mungyo Gallery soft oil pastel to get the vivid colour of the petals. Another way of doing this is to do a white underlayer for the petals, let this set for a week, then go over this with shades of yellow - orange.

      So Mungyo are more opaque than Senellier?

    • @muskndusk
      @muskndusk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rta3738 No, but's that's not what's being used in this demonstration. From the wrapping it seems they're using Cray-Pas Expressionist, which are great student colours, but a bit dry and not fully opaque. They're not using Sennelier, which are much softer than the ones used here - they're like painting with lipstick.

      @@muskndusk I watched the full tutorial and he used cray-pas for the underpainting and Sennellier for the petals and details. He also specially mentioned that he intended for some of the black paper to show through. That said, your recommendations are worth a shot.

    Thank you for sharing with us the process of drawing/painting this beautiful flower. You are talented artest and teacher. This video has inspired me to try oil pastels. I have used almost all drawing and painting teckinks though my art journey, but never used oil pastels before. Now it is the right time to try them out.

    I like watching you work as you narrate. Another commenter here said you were using cray-pas in the under painting and sennelier to finish. Do you recall? What determines your choice? Am working an underpainting with craypas expressionist topped with mungyo gallery soft. Haven't developed a love for Sennelier quite yet...seem so tiny.

    I don't want to buy a lot of different papers for oil pastels, as this is a new interest. Nor would I use my Fabriano Artistico for oil pastels, sorry. Could someone please recommend a specific widely available and reasonably priced good quality paper that I could get in a pad form and use to get used to the medium and decide whether I want to continue with it?

      If you want black paper Legion Stonehenge has a pad. Otherwise for white try Strathmore wc paper that’s about as inexpensive as you’ll get.

    Great art 🎨.... But., In the original picture the flowers look like they are thriving. This leaves the viewer feeling uplifted. In your image however, the flowers look like they are dying. Was this deliberate?
    Could you have done a blended under picture then added highlights and detail over the top?.

      He used Canson Mi-Teintes black with the textured surface. Mi-Teintes is his favorite paper for pastel work.
