- A viewer wrote me asking my advice to get a few features that are currently lacking on his tractor. Essentially he wants to know if it's a better deal to sell his tractor and buy something with all the features he needs, or to add them on himself. I'll tell you my opinion in today's video.

You are pretty entertaining and informative with your videos. I think one of my favorites was you getting the big Kubota stuck! Would love to see some blooper snow mishaps IF they happen and not scripted. Cheers!
there are a couple good snow stuck mishap videos.. one two maybe three of a really nice JD Gator that he stuck on a lake. recovery efforts lasted a couple videos.. he loved that Gator.. suprised he got rid of it 🤣
Agree fully with the upgrade the current tractor. I added a SSQA from WorkSaver and a front 3rd function from WR long to my 2018 New Holland. If I were to do it again, for as much as I use my grapple, which is a few times a year, I would have gone with a brush crusher and saved the dough on the 3rd function. If it had enough flow to run a auger or some other implement that I needed up front, maybe worth it, but for a little less functionality I think I’d rather have the couple grand back from the 3rd function. The SSQA is an absolute necessary upgrade though - forks change the game. I’d also consider getting a new HLA or other slightly larger bucket with SSQA plate already on it rather than cutting the pin flanges off the stock bucket, buying a ssqa adapter plate and welding it in. By the time you’re done, time and money wise you are more than halfway to a new bucket. I did that and then put some three point cat 1 pins on my stock bucket and use it as a carry bucket in the rear, handy to through log rounds in to transport and for counterweight.
IIRC, there's someone that makes an add-on grapple that uses linear actuators instead of hydraulics. That might be an option.

Good coverage of a common question. Something you didn’t mention but implied is to try to think thru possible future uses of your tractor & get those mods / options when you buy the tractor. Example, if you think that you may ever use a hydraulic attachment (or implement), get that added before you take delivery of your tractor. Also in this category: filling the tires w/ liquid ballast, changing tire position/ adding wheel spacers, and my favorite - a cab. Most of the time you’ll spend more $$ to add these options later, than if you had the dealer install them up front. I recognize that you just might not have the additional $$ up front for options, but you’ll appreciate the savings if you can swing it at time of purchase. Just my experience. Others will chime in if they disagree.
I would definitely go for upgrading an existing machine rather than buying a new one. Most upgrades if you do it yourself can be done quite cheaply labour wise and your machine will sell for more if it has more functionallities. I myself bought an old tractor which I'm planning on to restore it a little and upgrade it with a rops, work lights, warning beacons, new cables because most of the electronics doesn't work properly😅, 2 or 3 double acting remotes, new paint job, new decals, replace some worn parts, maybe I'll upgrade al the lightts in led, maybe I'll ad some extra aftermarket options, I think I'll upgrade the original exhaust for a decent chromestack or an replacement exhaust and maybe a pre cleaner for the inlet air. I also definitely want to have a few front weights preferably a whole set of original 40kg weights that came with it. My tractor is already quite well outfitted for the most tasks I want to do with it and for an 50 year old machine it already has quite a lot of the luxurious options on it. But before it's completely the way I want it to be I think I'll be a few years in to the future😅😅😅 the plan is to start a little contracting and upgrading it on the way so it becomes a much more nicer tractor to see and use and be more proud of to own as it's getting nicer.😊😊
I strongly recommend having extra hydraulic outlets fitted at the front and back when purchasing a new tractor. You may or may not need them later on but if you do then it will have been a lot cheaper to have them fitted at the outset. If you don’t use them maybe one day you sell your tractor and it will be worth more on the sale.
Yeah it definitely will sell for more with extra outlets. Also convenience things will make it worth more just every little upgrade is going to make it more versatile and worth more. I don't know if dealer fitted remotes are worth it because it can ad a lot to the price. If you're a little mechanically inclined you can fit them later on if you want and maybe for way less than a dealer🤷🏻♂️
@@KevinJD2030 it’s better for the dealer to install this sort of stuff for a few reasons. Firstly it will be easier to install as the tractor is new, clean and with the dealer. So if anything goes wrong, leaks or malfunction you can throw it back at the dealer. Secondly the cost of extras can be included in the price of tractor and the finance of it.
We had an extra rear remote fitted to our tractor before delivery. Neither rear remotes have been used yet, we bought the tractor in 2020, but in 2024 I’m planning to buy a spreader that does have two hydraulic functions. So if I can save up for the spreader, which is damn hard, I’ll be using those hydraulic circuits.

If your customer has quick connections on his loader just unplug a circuit and use longer hoses. Cheap way to get by.

Thanks for this video. I have been struggling with the same question. I have a 1023E with a non quick attach bucket. It really has done almost everything I need. I have been thinking about trading it in for a 1025R with a quick attach bucket. Now I think I will just get a set of forks that will attach onto the bucket. I like the last few in the shop videos. Very informative. Learned a lot. Happy Holidays.

New Holland guy here. I bought a SSQA adapters & a 3/16 plate for the bucket from VEVOR for less than $300. Then for around $600 I used a Kubota kit from Summit Hydraulics for the 3rd function. I did the work myself so about 5 hrs of time was the additional cost. I did it for the 72" 2 jaw grapple and couldn't be happier.

Good review of options. Since he is happy with his tractor, I would probably go with the SSQA upgrade if money is not an issue. It gives you a lot more flexibility.
He could even save some money by purchasing Precision's Grapple for pallet forks by going the SSQA route. You can do a lot of grapple work with Precision Grapple for forks. We like ours and have done a lot of work with that set up.
If he stays with a pin on bucket, I would definitely get Precision's wider open grapple for we the bucket. I think it gives you 55 inches of opening rather than the standard one, which I think is around 35 inches. Also, if he goes that route by staying with his pin on bucket, I would get the double grapple if his bucket is more than 60 inches.
If the customer is mechanically handy, go out of the power beyond to 2 circuit valve. If u can also weld and make own ssqa. I did this to old Deere compact 855.
I've built my own ssqa for a compact wheel loader, and it is not easy and that's coming from someone with a lot of welding / fabrication experience (10 years). If possible and if you have some welding experience, keep a look out for maybe a broken down skid loader that you can get the quick attach off of and adapt. I've done that too and that's a lot easier than fabricating it from scratch.

Some welding/fab shops can make a SSQA for around $800-$1200 using the existing bucket and then put a SSQA plate on the bucket.
I think this is an opportunity for you to do an install video of a quick attach mount to a pinned loader....
Would that grapple attachment for the bucket work better on a pallet fork attachment, especially for long logs?
Yes, upgrading a current tractor is almost always less expensive than replacing the tractor with a new one. Now, if you can trade for a good used one that is equipped the way you want, that might be less expensive than upgrading your existing. Pretty much like buying cars. It is almost always cheaper to keep your current car going than to buy a new one. However, there are factors other than money so that comes into play as well.
It's pretty hard to beat that 'new tractor smell'. But saving lots of money will do it.
Shovel some manure on that new tractor and that nasty new tractor smell will be gone. 😂
If his tractor is in good condition he could sell it. Those NH Boomers with low hours, and from that period, are selling for $14k-$15K. So, he could potentially sell it and buy a new tractor with the 3rd function and rear hydraulic remote for a few thousand dollars, which is what he'd spend to upgrade it. The Summit TX25 would be a perfect candidate for that, and also the TYM 2515H. The 2515 has a lift capacity of 2200LBS at the pins! That's more than double what the Summit and his Boomer 25 can lift.
I think as long as he could sell his current tractor for a fair price he would be better off buying a new one. If not, then I would keep the Bommer and upgrade it.
Interesting discussion. When I go to get a tractor, might it pay to get the "badly equipped" used tractor (no SSQA, no 3rd function, etc) at a lower price vs a better equipped generally equally quality with the idea of installing the upgrades? Do used tractor prices reflect the lower utility enough to make it worth the hassle, especially if one knows this "going in"? More of a PITA that route, but what's the $$$ / hour of my time? The same difference in buying a lightly "fixer" house (only needs paint, carpet and other cosmetic updates) vs the "move in ready".
Another consideration is how much of a trade he will get for his Boomer. Some dealers want the new equipment sales, and some are still offering 0% financing, so it may be worth at least researching a trade for a new one.

Anther consideration if you need more attachments, is that (at least with John Deere), you get 0% financing. I traded in my 2 year old 1025r, for a 2038r and added a backhoe, as well as several other attachments. My payments went up, but not as much per month as if I had financed the attachments for the 1025r. Bonus, I now have a more powerful tractor with a great backhoe (as opposed the small one that fits the 1025r). Yes I did get a grapple (I also got the 4-in-1 bucket). I had the m add the power beyond, 3rd, 4th and 5th function. I did have to pay for it, but for each $720.00 financed, it only adds $10 a month, so for $100 a month additional cost, you get $7,200 worth of attachments or options. If you are happy with your tractor, and just need a grapple, get that. u if you find that you are using your tractor for more than you had originally thought and find it is a bit undersized and there are many attachments you wish you had originally purchased, then trading in makes sense. Good luck trying to finance $14,000 of equipment for $200 a month. (a loan like that will likely cost you more than the payment for the attachments and the tractor).

Does anyone here have any experience with Tractor Innovations diverter kits? It seems like a good solution for someone who doesn't use their tractor much but wants extra hydraulics on demand. A kit cost a third of most aftermarket 3rd functions and has no solenoids to fail and doesn't require modifying the joystick. Another option would be an electric actuated grapple like the Worksaver ESCG-48.
