During WW2, they had less than a hundred Pe-8 heavy bombers, which were organized into a specialized unit known as ADD (ADD=Aviatsiya Dal'nogo Deystva=Aviation of Distant Action). After the war, this had been expanded and equipped with heavy bombers (Tupolev Tu-4, Myasischev 3M "Molot", Tupolev Tu-16, Tupolev Tu-22 and Tu-22M, Tupolev Tu-95 and in the final years of the USSR, the Tupolev Tu-160), which were comparable to their American (B-29, B-50, B-36, B-47 and the B-52) and British (Vickers Valiant, Avro Vulcan and Handley-Page Victor) counterparts.
