I saw this at TIFF and got to sit right behind the director, so on top of having the time of my life getting to witness this thing, it was also great to watch her react to the audience reactions. She clearly knew she made something special (especially by then)!
I'm 60 years old. So I found the movie really sad as what the movie said about aging in our society. It is entertaining and both females are outstanding.

I LOVED this film. The audience was incredibly respectful even though I thought it would've been kinda fun if we were all reacting. I can't wait to see this again. Can't believe this film was made with such a recognizable star.

Saw this yesterday night, and it was amazing, the gradual absurdity just kept me on my toes and essentially gave me what i wanted by the end. One of my favorite horror films this year by far!
I am a bit squeamish, so this is probably something I would try to watch at home with just one eye open and my finger on the "off" button.....just in case. Sometimes my curiosity just gets the best of me and I really want to see what has made such a big impression on others, even it if the experience is challenging.
There are probably some scenes you want to look away, but I would still recommend it since it is not only gore and horror and disgust, it also has something to say. Also, it's just very well executed; writing, direction, acting, sound design, production design, etc. It all comes together wonderfully in a hot mess of a third act.
Lol, same here. I wish they would release a “mercy censoring” version for people like me with weak stomachs. I wanna watch this so badly, but I know it will mess me up!
@@Sishel TBH, i sometimes preferred the "edited for TV" versions of violent or gory movies. The pertinent parts were still there but things that really bothered me were not. My (involuntary) empathy makes many movies extremely unpleasant to watch. I once got a sore neck from involuntarily recoiling when a movie character was hit in the face. for goodness sake! I no longer watch broadcast TV. Do the major networks even show "edited for TV" movies anymore?
Saw this last night and the third act made me laugh the hardest I've had in the cinema in forever, I can see it being extremely divisive. It also put me off boobies and food so well done Coralie.
The substance is not only the best film so far of 2024 it is the best female directed film of all time. Its insane. Its depraved. Its absurb. It is a film that is so compelling and unforgettable you can't take your eyes off of it for a second. Its requiem for a dream meets the fly meets Barbie but far more epic than any of those films. If there is any justice this film makes $100 million and gets ten Oscar nominations. 10/10
Around 15 people got out of my screening when I was watching, this gory, shocking, horrifying and mesmerizing. Also they do share a conscious, they just dont care for the harm they do to eachother.
There is another layer beyond beauty: addiction. If you consider the substance as being drugs or alcohol (mostly referred to as substances in real life) it keeps making sense: it does transforms you into a "better" version of yourself and you still neeed to sober up to your former self every now and then. And yes, it also takes an iriversable toll on you both phsically and mentally and there is no coming back from that unless you either find a ballence or terminate the addiction completely. Take care of yourself and keep your friend close, show them this movie if they are strugglling. 🤗
I haven't been this floored at a movie theater in years (well ok Speak No Evil in 2022 but that was at Fantasia...) - The Substance was such a spectacular movie on so many levels. Stunning actors performances, punchy, artsy, rhythmic direction, provocative yet straight to the point punch in your face message, insane gore and practical effects all rolled up into a movie.
I'm a horror guy so there's very little that shocks me now from years of desensitization but I was genuinely taken aback during parts of this movie...loved it
I saw the trailer pop up on my feed the other day, that alone just gave off a sense of discomfort and I was hooked… watching the film today I was completely blown away. I have no words for it, one of the craziest films I’ve seen.
I have watched it in Moscow tonight and it is absolutely about experience and feeling, not about pleasure of watching.. Totally would recommend it to people, who are more about art
Watched it 3 times in 3 days. One of the best films ever made. An incredibly disturbing cautionary tale on what happens when you base your entire identity on your looks. Every young woman should watch this film.
I think it probably was. I also thought The Substance stuff in it's syringe looked a lot like the fluid from another Yuzna film, The Reanimator, and the Substance did technically do the same job.

It’s honestly a rough watch in that regard, I love practical effects and have a strong ability to rationalize it as fake in real time, but this one had some grrrroooss stuff in it I had to watch through my fingers
As I mentioned before, visually it is not much different than Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse. If you can handle that, you should be able to handle most of this. It's kind of cartoony because of the lighting. Sure, the context is different but, it really isn't that bad in my opinion. EDIT: Someone below mentioned "Requiem for a Dream"...see, I would argue that that movie is MUCH WORSE than The Substance (for comparison).
At the end, i think the more risks u are willing to take and the clearer your voice as a filmmaker becomes, the bigger success you'll face !!! Can not wait to watch it!! Greetings from Mexico!
I haven’t seen the movie yet but can you clarify one thing for me. When the “other body” is walking around, the younger one, is it the same brain that’s being shared, or is the real person just completely unconscious and have no idea what’s happening while they aren’t the active one? Like when the real one wakes up do they know what’s happened?

Thank you Dan! I decided to watch this movie because of a comment that Dan made on a Box Office analysis and I'm so glad that I did. There were whole sections that I had my hands covering my eyes and face. It was a very intense movie that left me drained emotionally, mentally and physically. I could hear people munching away in the audience and I can't understand how they were able to do so. By the end of it, I was impressed by the maturity of the audience that I didn't see anyone walk out and I could hear a fair amount of them laughing. I was like: people are getting it! One of the best cinematic experiences I've ever had.
The movie has a 89% critics score and 82% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, a 8/10 IMDB rating, and a 4.1/5 on Letterboxd. I think it's safe to say that most ppl are loving this, the "divisiveness" that most ppl have brought up doesn't seem to be in play here.
I'm so excited to see this. My most anticipated film of the year. REVENGE is my second favorite Revenge film behind Old Boy. Her and Julia Ducournau are my 2 David Cronenberg Acolytes that I will watch whenever they release!
Imagine an ending where everything was nothing more than a coma "dream" due to the car accident, where in the end she wakes up giving her a second chance to value the beauty he has and enjoy life … Much better ending giving a life lesson
I was very indifferent bec I loved everything till that last 30 mins. “3 months later” was when the film dropped off for me. Not that I hated it but just didn’t fully work for me
This movie was amazing!!!! Beyond what I expected and certainly the best film of the year for me due to the depth of its message about the entertainment industry (and maybe that's why it hits so much cuz I work in it - so yeah I know)
Quaid was PHENOMENAL in this movie, just his little parts. That scene where Sue is mentally (and physically) breaking down before the New Years ball, the way he says "pretty girls should always smile!", the inflection on 'always smile', it wasn't a suggestion, but a command, beneath the guise of his *own* fake smile. Outside of the blood bath scene at the theater (which I get is probably a metaphor for her getting back at those who used her), this movie is a fantastic 9/10. Had anxiety through the entire movie. Is Hollywood back at fresh content? Would love to hear some thoughts.
This movie is CAMP AF. This is my favorite movie of the year hands down. It’s gross but it’s so deep. There’s so much to unpack here. It’s edited incredibly. To explain the plot is to give away so much. It’s better to know as little as possible. Demi Moore is absolutely incredible. Margaret Qualley is electric. She should be the next Wonder Woman. Cast her now!!!
I won't say I was the neutral viewer of this movie who you said won't exist, but I will say I didn't love it or hate it. I was pretty much on board with a lot of it, but definitely thought the last 30 minutes or so was not as strong as the rest. It seems like some of the ideas didn't fully land, but I'll still take bold and daring stuff like this over Borderlands shlock a billion times out of a billion.
The "Gaze," as you called it, the way we watch the bright scenes with Sue that are very flashy and sexual, made me feel nervous and uncomfortable, obviously the point, and it's done so well. Seeing this woman birthed out of another's back and walking around taking her seat to live a more fulfilling life with such provocativeness was for me the true horror and unease in this film and they knocked it out of the park.
Also, I want to point out, I wish we had more horror films like this and Midsommar. So many films are dark and gritty. I love the change in style of horror being out in the open with bright colors that resemble or exaggerate everyday life. It introduces the possibility of what sacred us the most doesn't hide in the dark but in the light and around us in our everyday life, making us feel more vulnerable and thus, more terrified. I want more of that.
Saw it last night. I loved it. The actors did a great job and the director is one to keep up with, Can't wait to see her next one and I just ordered Revenge to see her first one.
I saw tonight, and was absolutely suprised, shocked, but LOVED IT!! I really hope people get out and see this unusually fabulous movie with Demi Moore absolutely shining as the great actress she is.
I think they do have the memories of the other self. They are one person and one mind. The thing is as the movie progresses the protagonist dissociates the two identities and starts thinking of them as seperate. Almost in the same sense of how when you do something stupid when you are younger, you can betrate your own behavior.
Only comment I have, is that Elizabeth and Sue are LITERALLY one. Two different bodies, yes, but they do share consciousness. They recognize things from their other self, and their bodies obviously physically react to what the other does. The question is, why do they not remember certain aspects if they fully are one? But I do believe they are the same, one person. Because the person behind the substance said it multiple times. “You are one.”
I really wanted to give this a chance but the more I hear and read the more I think I can't, and I don't want to apologize for that decision. I haven't yet recovered from the hot dog fingers in Everything Everywhere All At Once so I'm pretty sure this would ruin my life. I'm happy for everyone else who can enjoy this stuff, and I always enjoy your reviews.
The film constantly reinforces that the sexualization is as seen through her own eyes so the take that this is seen through the male gaze falls pretty flat. Its her internalized misogyny thats the center of her conflict. The men paved the road with their lustful wants. She chose to drive on it. And the film holds her accountable for that. Its why the film punishes both of the Hers. Its not the male gaze that we the viewer see objectifying her. We dont need the middle man. The men just verbally overtly do it. No the gaze is hers. Its why half the film is seen through a mirror. Society, and the studios, are held accountable too. Them having her blood rain on them is a specific visual metophor. But its the whole crowd. Not just the executives. The spectators are held to the same level of accountability. And not simply men. Its even the little girls who emulate her. No one gets a pass. But she is held to the highest and thats why she suffers the most. The game rotten but she didnt have to play it. And thats a bold statement in 2024. Personal accountability is pretty old fashioned these days...no wonder you got distracted by "the male gaze." Its the easy critique and wouldve been a much easier, and safer, film. Thankfully the film was more thoughtful and more daring than this.
Best Actress for Demi Moore! What a powerful performance, and I think Margaret should also contend for Best Supporting Actress....this is a new cult classic!!!
Requiem leaves you crushed, depressed and without hope. This one (at least for me) left me extremely confused, grossed out, laughing and very happy about what I saw. It’s an experience.

It tries really hard to be as good as Requiem for a dream. I don't understand what the Cannes judges were thinking when they gave the best screenplay to this.

Highly anticipated and definitely delivered. Coralie Fargeat is a force to be reckoned with. Amazing performances and barely felt the run time. Regardless if you respect the film or not, you will walk out having seen something not put to film this year.
Yesterday I had the chance to watch “The Substance,” a film that promised to keep me on the edge of my seat, and to a large extent, it delivered on that promise. The psychological plot is intriguing and draws you in from the first moment, maintaining constant suspense for 85% of the running time. Demi Moore delivers a solid performance, taking the viewer through a labyrinth of emotions and unexpected twists. However, despite its strong beginning and development, the ending of the film left me with a bittersweet taste. The grotesquely comical conclusion felt out of place in a psychological thriller that had built such a tense and serious atmosphere. This abrupt change in tone not only puzzled me, but also took away the impact of what could have been a masterpiece of the genre. In short, “The Substance” is a film that almost achieves greatness. If it weren’t for its jarring ending, I would have easily placed it among the top three films of the year. Still, it's a worthwhile cinematic experience, especially for those who enjoy a good psychological thriller, albeit with a warning about its unexpected ending.

I didn't hate it. The biggest problem with the movie is that it is a Black Mirror episode dragged out to 2hrs and 20minutes. That is way too long for this premise. In a 43 minute episode, you don't question the logic or the premise. However, stretched out to 2hrs and 20mintes, you realize the movie contradicts itself. Maybe I am taking it too literally but, Elizabeth's motivation and her relationship with Sue doesn't make sense. I will say this...Demi Moore is amazing in the film (all the actors are actually). Also, the movie is shot beautifully. I am so glad that this move exists and Hollywood is starting to embrace weird sh!t again. It reminds me of the 80s and 90s where you could theatrically release a movie about ANYTHING. And between The Substance and Am I Racist....it looks like Hollywood might be embracing risk again. But, the movie is too f*cking long and the script (and the premise) needed to be tightened up a bit. I enjoyed the director's other film, "Revenge" much more.

this movie genre is absolutely not my thing but I watched it because I always thought of Demi Moore to be a highly gifted actress. Her performance in this movie blew me away. To me, it's so honest, pure, vulnerable, sad and full of wisdom and truths. Oscar worthy acting.
I’m absolutely going to roll the dice on this one. It sounds like a blast! Edit: I watched it on Thursday night. That movie is off the scale! Great performances all round, especially from Demi Moore. It’s her movie for sure.
I won't be home for a week, so will probably miss it as i don't expect this to last long in theaters. If it is there next Friday, i will be checking it out
Of all the body swapping thingy going on in the movie, my biggest problem with the movie was the younger self building that secret compartment in the bathroom on her own
At the beginning when it snowed in Los Angeles I raised an eyebrow, so by the time it got to the construction, I was prepped to suspend disbelief and just roll with what the movie was doing.
I loved the film, but I have problems with the motivation for Elizabeth to continue the treatment. I do not believe that she and Sue share any memories of what the other does. Elizabeth recognized the older man in the diner to be the young man who told her about the Substance due to the birthmark on their arm. Elizabeth recognized or rather put two and two together as to who the motorcycle guy was due to his helmet. She recognized the helmet, not the rider. Sue knew about the audition for Elizabeth's replacement not because she remembered but because she saw the ad in the trash. This is my take on whether or not they share memories, and I don't believe they do. My question is, why does Elizabeth continue when she seemingly gets nothing out of, quite the contrary. She doesn't get to experience any of what Sue's going through first hand, but rather sits back and watches it happen. How did this improve her situation? I really enjoyed this film and can't wait to see it again, but I do have those questions about her motivation.
I think her motivation to continue has to do with her loneliness: having Sue makes her feel she has someone in her life, that's why she cannot kill ker. As for what she takes from it: she is like a parent Who lives vicariously through her "daughter". Although she is conflicted about It, some part of herself is being loved and validated again.
It's an actual theme that has to be discussed with spoilers!! Dennis Quaid is sooo underrated actor. He is great!! I felt so sad for the character during the whole movie
I don't know how much i will like this movie, but i can't remember how long it has been since the last time somebody came up with such an original idea, So there is no way i am missing this one.
I loved it. Just went to see it this past weekend. So, I wanna talk about the Male gaze in this movie. Like, I was trying to figure it out. The camera seems to not just objectify Sue but to (somehow) objectify the objectification of Sue. I have no idea how Fargeat pulled it off but it's sooo cool and interesting.
Just before the last act, I thought it was going to end predictably - it was either gonna end like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, the Fly or Death Becomes Her.... and for a very brief moment, I felt dissapointed and was waiting for it to end - Then it made a HARD right turn and I was all in. I LOVE that I could never have predicted that ending. That in itself is a rarity!
Goddamn, I LOVE this movie so much! To me it was absolutely perfect. It's wierd, messed up, beautiful, sad and actually funny at times. To make perfect use of all those emotions in one film is really good work. Everyone involved with making this movie should hold their head high and be proud.
The only thing that will stop this from winning best film, director, actress, make up etc…etc… at every awards ceremony is the fact that it’s a body horror flick 🤔 it’s unbelievable, and I can’t remember the last time a film left such an impression on me a whole week after seeing it 😬 brilliant filmmaking
Toni Collette have the best performance in 2018 and got snubbed because she was in a horror film. The Oscars don’t really have much credibility anymore because of how they exclude certain genres regardless of the quality of the film…
That's an interesting thought I hadn't considered lol. Now I'm curious. Perhaps she's got a day job. Perhaps she's got a trust fund. Possibly works in the arts on the regular and saves up for next projects.

Saw this yesterday night, and it was amazing, the gradual absurdity just kept me on my toes and essentially gave me what i wanted by the end. One of my favorite horror films this year by far!
I am a bit squeamish, so this is probably something I would try to watch at home with just one eye open and my finger on the "off" button.....just in case. Sometimes my curiosity just gets the best of me and I really want to see what has made such a big impression on others, even it if the experience is challenging.
There are probably some scenes you want to look away, but I would still recommend it since it is not only gore and horror and disgust, it also has something to say. Also, it's just very well executed; writing, direction, acting, sound design, production design, etc. It all comes together wonderfully in a hot mess of a third act.

@@Sishel TBH, i sometimes preferred the "edited for TV" versions of violent or gory movies. The pertinent parts were still there but things that really bothered me were not.
My (involuntary) empathy makes many movies extremely unpleasant to watch. I once got a sore neck from involuntarily recoiling when a movie character was hit in the face. for goodness sake!
I no longer watch broadcast TV. Do the major networks even show "edited for TV" movies anymore?
Saw this last night and the third act made me laugh the hardest I've had in the cinema in forever, I can see it being extremely divisive. It also put me off boobies and food so well done Coralie.
I saw it at a midnight screening at a film festival and it might be one of the best theatrical experiences I’ve had this year
The substance is not only the best film so far of 2024 it is the best female directed film of all time. Its insane. Its depraved. Its absurb. It is a film that is so compelling and unforgettable you can't take your eyes off of it for a second. Its requiem for a dream meets the fly meets Barbie but far more epic than any of those films.
If there is any justice this film makes $100 million and gets ten Oscar nominations.

Around 15 people got out of my screening when I was watching, this gory, shocking, horrifying and mesmerizing. Also they do share a conscious, they just dont care for the harm they do to eachother.
Only 2 people left when I saw it last night. A woman left during the final act, and her boyfriend soon followed her 😅

There is another layer beyond beauty: addiction. If you consider the substance as being drugs or alcohol (mostly referred to as substances in real life) it keeps making sense: it does transforms you into a "better" version of yourself and you still neeed to sober up to your former self every now and then. And yes, it also takes an iriversable toll on you both phsically and mentally and there is no coming back from that unless you either find a ballence or terminate the addiction completely. Take care of yourself and keep your friend close, show them this movie if they are strugglling. 🤗
I haven't been this floored at a movie theater in years (well ok Speak No Evil in 2022 but that was at Fantasia...) - The Substance was such a spectacular movie on so many levels. Stunning actors performances, punchy, artsy, rhythmic direction, provocative yet straight to the point punch in your face message, insane gore and practical effects all rolled up into a movie.
Ooooh, intriguing premise! I hope it does well in the box office.

I saw the trailer pop up on my feed the other day, that alone just gave off a sense of discomfort and I was hooked… watching the film today I was completely blown away. I have no words for it, one of the craziest films I’ve seen.
I just left the theater after watching/experiencing The Substance and I gotta say .... I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT !!!! Definitely in my Top 10 of the year

Watched it 3 times in 3 days. One of the best films ever made. An incredibly disturbing cautionary tale on what happens when you base your entire identity on your looks. Every young woman should watch this film.

I think it probably was. I also thought The Substance stuff in it's syringe looked a lot like the fluid from another Yuzna film, The Reanimator, and the Substance did technically do the same job.

They definitely are one person. They keep reminding you that they are one person with one mind. She just develops a different personality depending on which body she’s in.
I agree that the two are one person - but I think it's clear that neither of them remembers what the other one has done when they wake up.

And Sue has Liz’s memories that’s how she knows where she works and where to get her packages. It’s honestly a rough watch in that regard, I love practical effects and have a strong ability to rationalize it as fake in real time, but this one had some grrrroooss stuff in it I had to watch through my fingers

As I mentioned before, visually it is not much different than Betelgeuse, Betelgeuse. If you can handle that, you should be able to handle most of this. It's kind of cartoony because of the lighting. Sure, the context is different but, it really isn't that bad in my opinion.
EDIT: Someone below mentioned "Requiem for a Dream"...see, I would argue that that movie is MUCH WORSE than The Substance (for comparison).

I haven’t seen the movie yet but can you clarify one thing for me. When the “other body” is walking around, the younger one, is it the same brain that’s being shared, or is the real person just completely unconscious and have no idea what’s happening while they aren’t the active one? Like when the real one wakes up do they know what’s happened?

Thank you Dan! I decided to watch this movie because of a comment that Dan made on a Box Office analysis and I'm so glad that I did. There were whole sections that I had my hands covering my eyes and face. It was a very intense movie that left me drained emotionally, mentally and physically. I could hear people munching away in the audience and I can't understand how they were able to do so. By the end of it, I was impressed by the maturity of the audience that I didn't see anyone walk out and I could hear a fair amount of them laughing. I was like: people are getting it! One of the best cinematic experiences I've ever had.
The movie has a 89% critics score and 82% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, a 8/10 IMDB rating, and a 4.1/5 on Letterboxd. I think it's safe to say that most ppl are loving this, the "divisiveness" that most ppl have brought up doesn't seem to be in play here.

I'm so excited to see this. My most anticipated film of the year. REVENGE is my second favorite Revenge film behind Old Boy. Her and Julia Ducournau are my 2 David Cronenberg Acolytes that I will watch whenever they release!

I was very indifferent bec I loved everything till that last 30 mins. “3 months later” was when the film dropped off for me. Not that I hated it but just didn’t fully work for me
This movie was amazing!!!! Beyond what I expected and certainly the best film of the year for me due to the depth of its message about the entertainment industry (and maybe that's why it hits so much cuz I work in it - so yeah I know)
I didn’t think that they didn’t have the same memories. I thought Elizabeth was clearly in Sue’s mind while Sue was activated

Quaid was PHENOMENAL in this movie, just his little parts. That scene where Sue is mentally (and physically) breaking down before the New Years ball, the way he says "pretty girls should always smile!", the inflection on 'always smile', it wasn't a suggestion, but a command, beneath the guise of his *own* fake smile. Outside of the blood bath scene at the theater (which I get is probably a metaphor for her getting back at those who used her), this movie is a fantastic 9/10. Had anxiety through the entire movie. Is Hollywood back at fresh content? Would love to hear some thoughts.

This movie is CAMP AF. This is my favorite movie of the year hands down. It’s gross but it’s so deep. There’s so much to unpack here. It’s edited incredibly. To explain the plot is to give away so much. It’s better to know as little as possible. Demi Moore is absolutely incredible. Margaret Qualley is electric. She should be the next Wonder Woman. Cast her now!!!
I won't say I was the neutral viewer of this movie who you said won't exist, but I will say I didn't love it or hate it. I was pretty much on board with a lot of it, but definitely thought the last 30 minutes or so was not as strong as the rest. It seems like some of the ideas didn't fully land, but I'll still take bold and daring stuff like this over Borderlands shlock a billion times out of a billion.
Kind of agree... I respect the 'gonzo' nature of the last half hour but thought it lacked depth and emotion heft.
That was harder to watch than any Saw movie.

Visual masterpiece and very intense
The "Gaze," as you called it, the way we watch the bright scenes with Sue that are very flashy and sexual, made me feel nervous and uncomfortable, obviously the point, and it's done so well. Seeing this woman birthed out of another's back and walking around taking her seat to live a more fulfilling life with such provocativeness was for me the true horror and unease in this film and they knocked it out of the park.
Also, I want to point out, I wish we had more horror films like this and Midsommar. So many films are dark and gritty. I love the change in style of horror being out in the open with bright colors that resemble or exaggerate everyday life. It introduces the possibility of what sacred us the most doesn't hide in the dark but in the light and around us in our everyday life, making us feel more vulnerable and thus, more terrified. I want more of that.
Saw it last night. I loved it. The actors did a great job and the director is one to keep up with, Can't wait to see her next one and I just ordered Revenge to see her first one.

I love that it's basically a modern, crazy remake of Death Becomes Her. Even the ending is quite similar.

I think they do have the memories of the other self. They are one person and one mind. The thing is as the movie progresses the protagonist dissociates the two identities and starts thinking of them as seperate. Almost in the same sense of how when you do something stupid when you are younger, you can betrate your own behavior.
This movie was like if John Waters collaborated with Troma. And I love it.

Only comment I have, is that Elizabeth and Sue are LITERALLY one. Two different bodies, yes, but they do share consciousness. They recognize things from their other self, and their bodies obviously physically react to what the other does. The question is, why do they not remember certain aspects if they fully are one? But I do believe they are the same, one person. Because the person behind the substance said it multiple times. “You are one.”

I really wanted to give this a chance but the more I hear and read the more I think I can't, and I don't want to apologize for that decision. I haven't yet recovered from the hot dog fingers in Everything Everywhere All At Once so I'm pretty sure this would ruin my life. I'm happy for everyone else who can enjoy this stuff, and I always enjoy your reviews.

The film constantly reinforces that the sexualization is as seen through her own eyes so the take that this is seen through the male gaze falls pretty flat.
Its her internalized misogyny thats the center of her conflict. The men paved the road with their lustful wants. She chose to drive on it. And the film holds her accountable for that. Its why the film punishes both of the Hers.
Its not the male gaze that we the viewer see objectifying her. We dont need the middle man. The men just verbally overtly do it. No the gaze is hers. Its why half the film is seen through a mirror.
Society, and the studios, are held accountable too. Them having her blood rain on them is a specific visual metophor. But its the whole crowd. Not just the executives. The spectators are held to the same level of accountability. And not simply men. Its even the little girls who emulate her. No one gets a pass.
But she is held to the highest and thats why she suffers the most. The game rotten but she didnt have to play it.
And thats a bold statement in 2024. Personal accountability is pretty old fashioned these days...no wonder you got distracted by "the male gaze." Its the easy critique and wouldve been a much easier, and safer, film. Thankfully the film was more thoughtful and more daring than this.

Requiem leaves you crushed, depressed and without hope. This one (at least for me) left me extremely confused, grossed out, laughing and very happy about what I saw. It’s an experience.

It tries really hard to be as good as Requiem for a dream. I don't understand what the Cannes judges were thinking when they gave the best screenplay to this.

Highly anticipated and definitely delivered. Coralie Fargeat is a force to be reckoned with. Amazing performances and barely felt the run time. Regardless if you respect the film or not, you will walk out having seen something not put to film this year.
Yesterday I had the chance to watch “The Substance,” a film that promised to keep me on the edge of my seat, and to a large extent, it delivered on that promise. The psychological plot is intriguing and draws you in from the first moment, maintaining constant suspense for 85% of the running time. Demi Moore delivers a solid performance, taking the viewer through a labyrinth of emotions and unexpected twists.
However, despite its strong beginning and development, the ending of the film left me with a bittersweet taste. The grotesquely comical conclusion felt out of place in a psychological thriller that had built such a tense and serious atmosphere. This abrupt change in tone not only puzzled me, but also took away the impact of what could have been a masterpiece of the genre.
In short, “The Substance” is a film that almost achieves greatness. If it weren’t for its jarring ending, I would have easily placed it among the top three films of the year. Still, it's a worthwhile cinematic experience, especially for those who enjoy a good psychological thriller, albeit with a warning about its unexpected ending.

I didn't hate it. The biggest problem with the movie is that it is a Black Mirror episode dragged out to 2hrs and 20minutes. That is way too long for this premise. In a 43 minute episode, you don't question the logic or the premise. However, stretched out to 2hrs and 20mintes, you realize the movie contradicts itself. Maybe I am taking it too literally but, Elizabeth's motivation and her relationship with Sue doesn't make sense. I will say this...Demi Moore is amazing in the film (all the actors are actually). Also, the movie is shot beautifully. I am so glad that this move exists and Hollywood is starting to embrace weird sh!t again. It reminds me of the 80s and 90s where you could theatrically release a movie about ANYTHING. And between The Substance and Am I Racist....it looks like Hollywood might be embracing risk again. But, the movie is too f*cking long and the script (and the premise) needed to be tightened up a bit.
I enjoyed the director's other film, "Revenge" much more.
The Substance is not a Hollywood studio film, made completely by UK and France, and if you're going to say anything made by Matt Walsh is a film...

this movie genre is absolutely not my thing but I watched it because I always thought of Demi Moore to be a highly gifted actress. Her performance in this movie blew me away. To me, it's so honest, pure, vulnerable, sad and full of wisdom and truths. Oscar worthy acting.

Edit: I watched it on Thursday night. That movie is off the scale! Great performances all round, especially from Demi Moore. It’s her movie for sure.
I won't be home for a week, so will probably miss it as i don't expect this to last long in theaters. If it is there next Friday, i will be checking it out
Of all the body swapping thingy going on in the movie, my biggest problem with the movie was the younger self building that secret compartment in the bathroom on her own
At the beginning when it snowed in Los Angeles I raised an eyebrow, so by the time it got to the construction, I was prepped to suspend disbelief and just roll with what the movie was doing.
I loved the film, but I have problems with the motivation for Elizabeth to continue the treatment. I do not believe that she and Sue share any memories of what the other does. Elizabeth recognized the older man in the diner to be the young man who told her about the Substance due to the birthmark on their arm. Elizabeth recognized or rather put two and two together as to who the motorcycle guy was due to his helmet. She recognized the helmet, not the rider. Sue knew about the audition for Elizabeth's replacement not because she remembered but because she saw the ad in the trash. This is my take on whether or not they share memories, and I don't believe they do. My question is, why does Elizabeth continue when she seemingly gets nothing out of, quite the contrary. She doesn't get to experience any of what Sue's going through first hand, but rather sits back and watches it happen. How did this improve her situation? I really enjoyed this film and can't wait to see it again, but I do have those questions about her motivation.
I think her motivation to continue has to do with her loneliness: having Sue makes her feel she has someone in her life, that's why she cannot kill ker. As for what she takes from it: she is like a parent Who lives vicariously through her "daughter". Although she is conflicted about It, some part of herself is being loved and validated again.
Is this another “Beau is afraid” type thing? Cause I truly HATED that one 😁

I loved it. Just went to see it this past weekend. So, I wanna talk about the Male gaze in this movie. Like, I was trying to figure it out. The camera seems to not just objectify Sue but to (somehow) objectify the objectification of Sue. I have no idea how Fargeat pulled it off but it's sooo cool and interesting.
Just before the last act, I thought it was going to end predictably - it was either gonna end like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, the Fly or Death Becomes Her.... and for a very brief moment, I felt dissapointed and was waiting for it to end - Then it made a HARD right turn and I was all in. I LOVE that I could never have predicted that ending. That in itself is a rarity!
Goddamn, I LOVE this movie so much! To me it was absolutely perfect. It's wierd, messed up, beautiful, sad and actually funny at times. To make perfect use of all those emotions in one film is really good work. Everyone involved with making this movie should hold their head high and be proud.
The only thing that will stop this from winning best film, director, actress, make up etc…etc… at every awards ceremony is the fact that it’s a body horror flick 🤔 it’s unbelievable, and I can’t remember the last time a film left such an impression on me a whole week after seeing it 😬 brilliant filmmaking
Toni Collette have the best performance in 2018 and got snubbed because she was in a horror film. The Oscars don’t really have much credibility anymore because of how they exclude certain genres regardless of the quality of the film…
Fargeat has only made 2 films, 7 years apart. I wonder how she survives financially and who is funding her films.
