This is one of the best tributes I've seen commemorating Nokie's life and musical entertainment accomplishments. Nokie Edwards was also a very good will ambassador for the American People and nation. At a critical time, he was adored by the Japanese people as they rebuilt and turned to western style and culture. I believe Nokie's stature will grow with time as we younger and younger people recognize his distinctive style and surf sounds he helped pioneer. What about all those TV show theme songs on the 1960's? Didnt Nokie help with TV show theme songs of the era like Hawaii 5-O or Batman? Nokie's guitar playing in concert ruled and was the best live sound and show in 1965. Mosrite guitars and Fender Bandmaster reverb amps forever!
I first became aware of The Ventures, upon hearing WALK DON'T RUN '64 on a transistor radio that my grandmother gave me a couple of years earlier. My father wanted me to listen to classical music (ha, ha, ha) but within a day or so, I discovered the great rock'n'roll channel, KJR Seattle Channel 95. I listened to KJR from the years 1961 to 1965 after which, we moved to the San Francisco Bay area. One of the radio announcers at KJR was named, Lan Roberts. At first, I thought that he announced that the band's name was, "The Benchers." However, I soon learned the correct name. During the early 1960s, when I was aged ten to fourteen, I had no access to record stores, and my purchases were limited to Mad Magazine. But when we moved to the San Francisco Bay area, it was only a matter of a dozen years before I accumulated a collection of about 800 vinyl record albums. A boy in our neighborhood named Bruce Kane loaned me his hollow body acoustic guitar, and he taught me how to play bar chords. After that, my parents bought me a cheap Harmony electric guitar and a cheap amp and, a year later, they bought be a Fender Stratocaster and a Fender Vibrolux Reverb. I learned several of songs by The Ventures and, in this way, Mr. Nokie Edwards was one of my teachers. I was a member of these garage bands: The Boomerangs, Therapy, and Fellowship of the Ring. A photograph of me with my Fender Stratocaster appears on page 35 of the book, LED ZEPPELIN THE DAY I WAS THERE by Richard Houghton. Only in the first of these garage bands, did we play any instrumentals, and these included Pipeline, Wipeout, Tequila, Apache, and Fever (all of these being recorded by The Ventures). Still later on, in the year 1980, I moved to Madison, Wisconsin for work at the Univ. of Wisconsin. A block from my apartment was a wonderful concert hall called, MERLYN'S. One of the bands that I saw at Merlyn's was The Ventures. During the intermission, what occurred was a once-in-a-lifetime event. Nokie Edwards was making his way through the crowd (standing room only) in the darkened concert hall and, in doing so, he momentarily placed his hand on my shoulder in order to ensure that I wouldn't be in his pathway of walking. I realized right away, that this was the first and last time that I would be ever touched by the hand of a Rock God. Also, regarding The Ventures, I've always admired the beauty of Mosrite guitars, though I never owned one. Well, now that Mr. Nokie Edwards has gone on his ultimate journey, that represents another chunk of me that has disappeared. Sob. - - - Tom Brody, Berkeley, CA
A very sad day for all guitarist who knew who Nokie Edwards was...a great musical “Genius”...thank GOD for recordings that us fans have that we can listen to & remember those who we love to hear perform...RIP NOKIE...wayne
I was indeed a fan of Nokie and Ventures music. didn't know about his passing until recently. God be praised for his musical talents. Never to be forgotten.
Nokie Edwards was certainly one of the greatest musicians ever. He influenced me to play the guitar. He was scheduled to appear with Don Wilson at a tribute for Buck Ormsby (Wailers) in Tacoma, WA but did not show up. I was sad that I didn't get to see him. R.I.P. Nokie!
I love that Nokie, a CHEROKEE, played the theme song for HAWAII Five-0. And that the CHEROKEE (a landlocked tribe) produced one of the best (the best?) SURF guitarists!
