Bread pudding is slightly dried bread cubes mixed into and baked in vanilla egg custard pudding. So the bread soaks up the pudding before it sets up firm. Some people like it with maple syrup and it tastes just like French toast! I like it with cinnamon. The customary topping is lemon curd, much like the lemon stuff inside a lemon pie. Personally, I think it's fantastic.
LBJ’s love of Mexican food reminded me of how before he became president, he taught at a segregated Mexican-American School, which eventually caused him to support the Civil Rights Movement, at least far back as 1957.
I don't know if this has been commented yet, but fun fact: The sole reason for the late President Reagan's love for jellybeans was the fact that he used to be a smoker. So everytime he thought about smoking a cigarette, he'd pop some jellybeans.

This reminds me of how one year in Junior High School, my US history class had a party, and everyone chose a president and then bring some food that they really liked. I chose Eisenhower and found the recipe to his wife's sugar cookies. It was something really easy to do and my Mom loved to bake. Years later, and it's still our favorite sugar cookie recipe.

Thomas Jefferson going to Europe and realizing macaroni was a masterpiece that everyone had to try it back home is why I'm glad we live in this timeline. That alone was a hero move. But I feel for Buchanan. He kept ordering cabbage from the cabbage merchant and Team Avatar keeps ruining his orders with their shenanigans.
People think of Jefferson as being a farmer since he would go on about how farming was the best and most important job anyone could have... but he was in fact quite uninterested in his own farm. What he was really fascinated by was the cuisine, what you could make from a farm's produce. He brought back more than macaroni and cheese from Europe, he also helped popularize ice cream and French fries. He was also one of the first Americans to spread the use of tomatoes, rutabaga, sesame oil, lima beans, okra, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and eggplant (among others), which were either rare or unheard of at the time Jefferson started planting them at Monticello.
@@porsche911sbs apparently, he once ate a tomato like an apple in public and people freaked out because tomatoes were still thought to be poisonous (because they're related to hemlock). I hope this is true, because it's such a Jefferson thing to do.
My grandmother was Regan’s secretary when he was Governor of CA. I met him a few times when I was a kid and, he indeed have a jar of jelly beans on his desk he’d let me dip into if my grandmother was ok with it.

There’s something so charming about hearing each president’s favorite foods. While I believe that public officials should be held at the highest level of scrutiny, I can’t help but think it’s so cute that Jefferson ate Mac n Cheese. Or when Biden said “I just love Ice Cream.” It’s so real and affirming that yes these are people! Of course we should still criticize our former and current heads of state, but just for a for moment, let’s all just appreciate this video for how it humanizes these figures in a way I’ve never seen explored before. We can put all our politics aside and just all hate that Nixon ate Cottage Cheese and Ketchup every morning. Good job, Mr. Beat, you’ve united us all once again!
I disagree, there is something so dehumanizing and absolutely the opposite of "affirming that these are people" when you hear about apple pie made with pork

Chicken fricassee isn’t just chicken cooked in some sauce. It’s literally one of the greatest browned in butter, then braised/stewed in a mushroom cream and chicken stock based roux sauces ever. That served over rice and baked bacon wrapped asparagus on the side is one of the greatest meals ever. Any time I make it for a dinner party I get rave reviews. Lincoln knew what’s up.
@@supremecud147 It's more of a technique than a specific sauce, but yes - the "sauce" component is similar to a velouté, maybe an allemande. The key is to sauté the meat first, then braise it in the sauce. That's what makes it a fricassee.
Vinegar pie is basically an apple pie without apple. Basically a depression pie. We started growing zucchini last season and we made a apple.pie but substituted with zucchini. It's amazing and you can't recognize it's zucchini besides seeds
Once while doing a TV spot, Jill Biden introduced something to do with ice cream on that I actually used when hosting a Christmas dinner - we did a sundae bar for dessert but instead of having guests scoop their ice cream from the container, which is messy and takes forever, we used Jill’s technique: the day before, pre-scoop the ice cream and wrap individual scoops in plastic wrap. Then just before serving, unwrap each scoop and put them into a serving bowl (I chilled the bowl first to prevent early melting). Guests simply have to take a scoop or two from the serving bowl with tongs for an instant sundae. It worked out well.
I too eat breakfast for dinner sometimes, delicious as always. My mom always used to call it “Brinner” as well when I was growing up lol you think it would be more common of a saying for this but you’re the first person I’ve ever heard anyone other than my mom saying the term.
My grandpa has a lot of great stories from when he was in the Navy. He saw LBJ on a visit to one of the bases because one of his crew mates was LBJ’s son in law. He sang the president a few songs, made the president a lot of tejano food and received a hug from the president.
Blanc mange is vanilla pudding. Hoppin' John is a southern thing and MUST be eaten every New Years for good luck. Blackeyed peas are simmered with smoked meat: bacon, ham, sausage, or all three, cut into small bite sized pieces. Most people added chopped onion and bell pepper, garlic and salt--with all that smoked meat you don't need much, and pepper. In Texas jalapenos, finely minced are added. Simmer until the peas are very soft, which doesn't take long, especially since fresh, not dried, peas are preferred. Serve over white rice topped with a spicy sauce of your choosing. Homemade or Tabasco are popular. Good stuff!
As a big Garfield fan, I must defend the choice of squirrel. As stated, he couldn't really eat a lot of rich, fatty cooked foods. Actually one of the causes of his infections getting so bad was his doctors forcing him to eat food like bacon, which he threw up (and losing everything else he ate). So a lean meat like squirrel makes a lot of sense for this dietary condition! On top of that, he grew up poor on the frontier, where game was a more popular food choice.
The thumbnail makes it look like the Presidents have put all their differences aside and have sat down to eat a dinner that Trump has prepared for them.
your videos remind me so much of the US History teacher I had in high school, he was such a good teacher. watching your videos give me such nostalgia, your TH-cam channel is my confort channel, thank you for dedicating yourself to it so much
And you call Fraklin Pierce a doughface. I'm not sure what that means but, he was a rabid, racist Democrat that opposed Lincoln in abolishing Slavery. Democrats also founded the KKK and blocked the Civil Rights Movement. Malcolm X and MLK tried to warn Black Americans of the Democrats and they killed them for it.
Honestly it’s pretty humanizing to find out the presidents’ favorite foods, it reminds you that even the most powerful people in the world who have had to deal with so many national and international problems all the time still have little joys they get out of life
I was a kid in Washington when Clinton was Prez. He used to go on his runs around the city with his security personnel jogging along in tow. I was at a McDonald's after school one day when suddenly there was a commotion up front. Before I know it, there were about 10-12 bodyguards inside and I could see Clinton joking with the McD staff and ordering big macs, fries and quarter pounders to take back to the White House. He still had his jogging shorts on and next thing he was jogging again with security detail and bodyguards in tow. Clinton's McDonalds habits came to an end when he had triple bypass heart surgery shortly after he finished his presidency
Just don't serve undercooked meat to him or his staff members. One cook on Air Force One made that mistake once, and LBJ gave him an earful about it before throwing the meals food first on the floor and stomping away.
Wish I could try it. But my man found out during a trip down to Missouri, that he is highly allergic to the meat. Ended up as a kid having his stomach pumped.
Surprised that Mr. Beat didn't mention that Taft once feasted on a 26lb opossum during a Thanksgiving dinner at the White House. (That freaks me out more than squirrels). Several presidents enjoyed dining on roadkill like squirrels, possums, and raccoons.
My niece has decided to become the President in the future. Just for the record, her favorite foods are dark chocolate, specifically flourless chocolate cake, grilled ribeye, and beef nachos.
I love soups and stews! I mostly enjoy very flavorful ethnic soups and stews from around the world, though (such as Pho, Caldo de Res, Irish lamb stew, Thai coconut curry chicken soup with lemongrass, and so forth). I doubt that was what Millard Fillmore went for, however, if those sorts of recipes were even available and the ingredients accessible. (I would wager that such a wide variety of gourmet spices were harder to source and much more costly for Americans than they are today.)
When he was Union general, Grant also had a strange breakfast. A cup of coffee (normal) and a pickle. Depending on how much sleep he got overnight, the cucumber might not have had enough time in the vinegar...
It kinda makes sense in an odd way. Caffeine from the coffee and electrolytes from the pickle. Sorta like something you might have while dieting or fasting.
I need to watch these just to see Calvin Coolidge. We learned nothing about him in school, and now here I am learning that he mixed weird foods together, was the complete opposite of his wife, and other stuff. What an interesting guy.
The presidents all started off with these elaborate and unique meals as their favorite foods. But by the modern era, everything was just replaced with junk food and fast food. God bless America.
Well to be fair Obama’s hamburgers are mostly made with actual beef and real ingredients, same thing can be assumed with the nachos and with Bush’s pizza. The fast food trend started with Clinton, sure, but the only other two presidents who really liked it are Trump and Biden.
I liked seeing the progression of the country through the lens of food, how food evolved through the ages and things, food was more complicated in earlier administrations but as we got closer to the present more presidents like quicker and cheaper food? I also liked the fun fact of how Reagan kept a jar of jelly beans on his desk during his administration
Mr. Beat makes perfect videos. Every video I watch like this feels like I've only been watching for 4 minutes and it's like "oh crap. This video was 19 minutes long?? The content is always interesting and so is the delivery. Thank you for the cool content!
The most recent presidents all enjoy fast food. That's interesting when you consider American's diets have gotten worse and fast foods have come to dominate. Whether they honestly love it (I think so) or are trying to blend it, it's interesting how presidents' food choices reflect their times.
I think it might have something to do with campaigning on the road. You have to have something you can stuff into your face quickly between stops on the campaign bus. I'm not sure that can explain Trump's penchant for chicken and burgers though, seeing as he was mostly on his own private jet.
Some of it is true. Some of it is for show. It really depends on how "managed" the politician in question is Heck, Bush Sr. got in trouble for his broccoli statement because it harmed the broccoli industry
I know that President Regan liked Macaroni and Cheese. There is a recipe you can find for Nancy Regan's macaroni and cheese that he loved. I have made it, and it is very much like my Mom used to make. It is also very adaptable in whichever way you prefer it. I am certain their chef in the White House made this frequently.
LBJ also guzzled root beer by the gallons (when he wasn't draining fifths of Cutty Sark whiskey). In one book I read that LBJ once ordered Air Force One to make an emergency landing at the Denver Airport. There was a crisis on board because they had ran out of root beer. LBJ was livid and was screaming at the staff. Only an A&W would get him to calm down.
Lol that's great. I never knew that ty ty. On the cutty, he would have fit in with Washington's 1787 party. 54 bottles of Madeira, 60 bottles of Claret, 8 bottles of Whiskey, 22 bottles of Porter, 8 bottles of Hard Cider, 12 of Beer, 21 bottles of an unnamed wine, and seven bowls of Alcoholic Punch. So given the aberage bottle size then that's about 60 gallons of booze for a closed door party lol
Vinegar pie is actually quite good. I live in Tennessee where it’s still made in certain places. It was a poor man’s substitute for lemon pie as the vinegar was mixed with sugar and other flavorings. It’s actually really close to lemon pie.
When I learned about vinegar in cake, I was like "Wait what?". But when I tried a piece of that vinegar choccy cake, I was pleasantly surprised. The vinegar actually brings out the chocolate taste more. Also, it reduces the sweetness.
My personal favorite foods are chocolate, chocolate ice cream, cheese/pepperoni pizza, pigs in a blanket, chicken nuggets and fries, blueberries, and any food that has blueberries in it.
For George HW Bush, you should've also said that he likes Peking Duck. He started liking it, while he was serving as the US ambassador to China. And boy Peking Gourmet Inn has always been a population destination for both politicians and common American citizens ever since George HW Bush and his family shows up there numerous times. The owner of the restaurant even regarded Mr. Bush senior as a favorite customer.
Thanks for the tip (I just moved to DC) But holy crap it’s $79 for a duck and all the other entrees are $50-60! It will have to be a special occasion dinner.
Hoover was not a particularly picky person, but the only food that he specifically requested during his presidency was California cherries when they were in season.
Zachary Taylor was known for being especially fond of hominy. He actually had a horse that had a nose for sniffing out the best corn for making hominy. I'm surprised that was not mentioned here.
Bread pudding is sooooooo good. The last few years my mom has been making the bread pudding for christmas using torn up cinnamon rolls instead of regular bread, and while it might literally be lethal to eat due to how unhealthy it is, it might be the best thing in the world.
@@OoooshetriesSs You just make bread pudding, but instead of bread, you go buy a pack of cinnamon rolls of your choice and rip them up and use it the same way haha.

Trouble is, to make ice cream requires CREAM - a dairy product that usually comes from cows. Todays ice cream is like a lot of leftover mashed potatoes with sugar, sugar, and more sugar. Much better off getting a pint of whipping cream and freezing some berries in it.
Trump was quoted as saying "I love Steak, it's my favorite food" Apparently he loved going to the most expensive steak houses in New York and Washington, ordering a expensive New York Strip cooked well done to the point of shoe leather and drowning in steak sauce or ketchup
This is honestly criminal enough to be on level with the treason, stolen classified documents and intel, and inciting a riot. What kind of monster orders an expensive steak, well done, and then drowning it in ketchup? I can visualize a chef either crying or cursing loudly whenever he ordered that.
10:24 I went to Harding's house, and they said he liked eating creamed chipped beef over waffles. Also, he had a toaster that plugged into his dining room chandelier.
Hmmm... I once read that Dolley Madison's favorite ice cream was actually salmon-flavored. It still sounds revolting with either oysters or salmon. I'm sticking with chocolate.
Salmon is the most underrated food. Raw salmon, that is. Best texture, best flavour, one of the healthiest too, and easiest to prepare (literally raw). It's also just moderately expensive, sustainably farmable, and not toxic as it's lower on the food chain.
It sounds revolting but it could actually be quite delicious. One of the original flavors of ice cream was Parmesan. It doesn't taste cheesy at all -- in fact if you didn't know it, you would think you were eating vanilla ice cream.
Japan seems to like seafood-based ice creams as well. I remember when I was a kid the first time I heard about that kinda stuff and it as that apparently in the Bahamas they serve flying fish ice cream or something like that, can't remember much of the details but that info has stuck with me ever since.
Thanks for this video! I love how you make history interesting, regardless of politics is can be interesting knowing about the favorite foods of others
I live in Santa Cruz CA and Joe Biden had visited a town that had been heavily damaged by a storm. He made sure to stop by Marianne’s ice cream, a local ice cream shop. The secret service had to order for him, but in his state that’s not particularly surprising. I was told he ordered chocolate chip.
One of the High on the Hog episodes on Netflix does a great job of telling a more complete story about mac & cheese. James Hemings, one of Jefferson's enslaved chefs (and Sally's brother), learned and perfected the recipe that popularized it in the US.
My favourite general's living his life eating his favourite dessert made by his wife. But hearing Martin Van Buren's favourite food is oysters, it's more than enough to tell that he's seafood lover. I didn't expect Buchanan to like cabbage, that's my boi, eating healthy food but still not having a sharp mind. He should've ate almonds instead. And, listening to what Coolidge likes, I am pretty sure that Herbert Hoover brought all that stuff from China and introduced it to Coolidge. He liked it so much that he started eating it in regular terms(my theory xD). Ronald Reagan likes gummy beans as I heard, he must've been missing his childhood days :). Rest are okay, and the squirrel foods were common in old times
I remember seeing a news story about George W Bush's love of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Seriously. There is a small kitchen in the West Wing near the Oval Office. They always kept it stocked with bread and George's favorite peanut butter and jelly so he could pop in for a quick snack.
Watching each of these go by, I keep trying to draw a connection between the overall quality of each presidents diet and how long they lived. In the case of FDR and Reagan, I think proper nutrition would've been a big help.
@@gavinthecrafter True, but he did suffer from dementia for the last 10 years or so. I'm not a doctor, but maybe it could've been prevented if all those jellybeans were carrots instead. An elderly man can't ingest that level of food grade plastic, dyes, and sugar without consequences.
I Googled vinegar pie, the other name for it is "desperation pie". I have a feeling, because so many people were poor back then, wealthy politicians like him when asked their favorite food, they would just think of the most despairing options to make people think he's just like them. Meanwhile he's eating steak every night
Not really. One of my uncles is a top brain surgeon and earns a TON of money every year. His favorite side dish is white rice with vinegar; because growing up, he was both poor and his mother sucked at cooking, so the only way to compensate and add flavor for cheap, was vinegar. To this day, he keeps adding vinegar to the rice every time we serve it.
Like when Hillary Clinton said she carries hot sauce in her purse to black people but then almost passed out at how deplorable a normal black person lived?
I'm from Georgia, we eat Hoppin Johns on New Years day and for basically the rest of the month lol. I've never made it with peas but we have it with collard greens, black eyed peas/cow beans, and the leftover ham from Christmas boiled in with the beans for hours and corn bread. It's really good and I usually don't like most southern foods despite being from here so yeah lol
Apples and Pork work well together. I mean, think about this. Mince pies used to be made with meat, too and apples and pork have been paired often from the medieval period onward. Coolidge is not too weird.
Yeah, I would definitely be interested in trying a pork and apple pie. I'm going to have to hunt down some recipes. Sounds like a great comfort food for October.

@@kennethkho7165 salmon-flavored ice cream, u like it tho?
It sounds revolting but it could actually be quite delicious. One of the original flavors of ice cream was Parmesan. It doesn't taste cheesy at all -- in fact if you didn't know it, you would think you were eating vanilla ice cream.
Japan seems to like seafood-based ice creams as well. I remember when I was a kid the first time I heard about that kinda stuff and it as that apparently in the Bahamas they serve flying fish ice cream or something like that, can't remember much of the details but that info has stuck with me ever since.
🤮🤮
I love how, when you look at the chapter segments, Teddy's is noticeably longer than everyone else's
As it should be
Anything less would be a disservice.
Thank you Coolidge for helping popularize Chinese food in America.
As someone who has eaten green beans with bacon, bread pudding, and squirrel, I question what country this man lives in.
I remember seeing a news story about George W Bush's love of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Seriously. There is a small kitchen in the West Wing near the Oval Office. They always kept it stocked with bread and George's favorite peanut butter and jelly so he could pop in for a quick snack.
Supposedly he said French fries were one of his favorite foods
Paisan! I knew I had something in common with Dubya. 😁
Watching each of these go by, I keep trying to draw a connection between the overall quality of each presidents diet and how long they lived. In the case of FDR and Reagan, I think proper nutrition would've been a big help.
I mean Reagan still lived to 93, more than most people
@@gavinthecrafter True, but he did suffer from dementia for the last 10 years or so. I'm not a doctor, but maybe it could've been prevented if all those jellybeans were carrots instead. An elderly man can't ingest that level of food grade plastic, dyes, and sugar without consequences.
Alzheimer’s not dementia

FDR contracted polio, so I don't think a regular diet would've saved him from death in his case
I Googled vinegar pie, the other name for it is "desperation pie". I have a feeling, because so many people were poor back then, wealthy politicians like him when asked their favorite food, they would just think of the most despairing options to make people think he's just like them. Meanwhile he's eating steak every night
Apparently when Eleanor Roosevelt visited the royal family of the UK back in WWII, they were serving the national loaf… on the fancy platters…
@@cooldude6269 the national loaf? Lol that sounds appetizing.

So THAT'S where my daughter gets her bananas.

Apples and Pork work well together. I mean, think about this. Mince pies used to be made with meat, too and apples and pork have been paired often from the medieval period onward. Coolidge is not too weird.
One of my favorite dishes is pork chops with apples. They're baked in the oven.
Yeah, I would definitely be interested in trying a pork and apple pie. I'm going to have to hunt down some recipes. Sounds like a great comfort food for October.
Making the same shitty Meatloaf joke twice, and so close to each other, I respect that.
I heard Grover Cleveland would eat his favorite dish but never in consecutive days 😊
