  • On Sunday the 21st of April Steam Incorporated and KiwiRail partnered up to run the Spiral Spectacular, a passenger train that ran up the North Island Main Trunk from Paekakariki to the Raurimu Spiral and return.
From Paekakariki North the train was hauled by Steam Incorporated's DA 1410 until Palmerston North, where under the wire KiwiRail's EF 30192 took lead for the run up the trunk to the Raurimu Spiral and back (Once back at Palmy the DA took the train back south). Along the way the train stopped at Waiouru for passengers to hop off and check out the Waiouru Army Museum (as apart of the trip) while the train continued its journey.
This trip marked the first EF Hauled Passenger train since the Tangiwai Memorial service back in 2017 where EF 30134 gave assistance to Jb1236 or if you want last proper EF lead train then 2016 Spiral Snow Express) and the first Overhauled EF passenger train. Hopefully the first of many to come...
This video is the result of a chasing the train from Otaki Station to the Raurimu Spiral and then back to Taihape.
    Enjoy!
Special Thanks Steam Incoporated and KiwiRail for a great chase!

I didn't realise how long ago the last EF-hauled passenger service was, but I still remember seeing EF 30134 towing JB 1236 through Waiouru station. Funny how the same EF that was left to haul that northbound freight train solo would go on to haul this Steam Inc. excursion.

Great Video, very pleased to see the EF loco at the front of the train, it confirms it's place in the past and the future for rail! In spite of the board's agenda for them to be consigned to the scrap heap! this also shows that Electric should not only be part of the main trunk lines future but also some others, ie the trans alpine, thanks for sharing

      Thanks!
Tranz Alpine would be cool but a bit of a stretch
Mainly just because electrifying the midland line would take yonks.
Actually, operating the train would be piss easy for them.

@@KiwiRailSpotter my main reason for including the midland line was that the Otira Tunnel was once traversed by electric loco's maybe theres an electric loco would remover the need for the diesel bankers?
